ARCHDIOCESE OF DUBLIN – BIG CHANGES IN THE WINGS

diarmuidmartin
DIARMUID MARTIN

The talk in Rome and Ireland is that there will be very big changes in the Archdiocese of Dublin this year.

My sources in Rome and Ireland tell me that Archbishop Diarmuid Martin (74) will retire before June of this year.

A “dark horse” replacement for Diarmuid is widely rumoured to be Father Gareth Byrne who is an expert in Catholic education based at the Mater Dei Institute and Dublin City University.

GARETH BYRNE

Father Byrne also assists every weekend in the united parishes of Clontarf in North Dublin.

One source said he would be named soon as coadjutor archbishop of Dublin.

Of course there is another serious contended for the post in the Vatican based Bishop Paul Tighe – a native of Dublin.

PAUL TIGHE

However it is believed in some quarters that Paul Tighe wants to continue his upward career in Rome and that many in Rome see him as an asset the Vatican would not want to lose at this time because of his communication skills.

THW TWO AUXILIARIES ARE RETIRING

image
EAMON WALSH

Added to the need for a new archbishop is the fact that the two auxiliary bishops of Dublin are to retire this year – Eamon Walsh and Raymond Field.

bishopfield_web
RAYMOND FIELD

These two auxiliaries have had a very unhappy career. They were caught up in the Dublin abuse enquiry and Diarmuid Martin put them under pressure to resign. They agreed but then Rome rejected their resignations.

Diarmuid Martin and the two of them have had an estranged relationship and there were priests and people who did not like this.

And while Diarmuid Martin was good with the abuse crisis and the media he had a poor relationship with the Dublin priesthood.

Sadly, many Dublin priests are looking forward to his departure and a new regime.

Diarmuid himself has looked very stressed in recent times and there are rumours about his health.

I’m sure he will be glad to retire – maybe with one regret – that he was never made a cardinal?

Dublin needs a new archbishop and two new auxiliary bishops.

And out in the world the Irish Catholic church is dying on its feet, losing all credibility and will exist from now in in a hostile and anti-clerical society.

And all the while the Vatican is allowing women hysterectomies in LIMITED situations and poor Amy Sisyphus Martin is going around trying to restart the Irish Abortion War.

As Albert Camus said:

“The gods had condemned Sisyphus to ceaselessly rolling a rock to the top of a mountain, whence the stone would fall back of its own weight. They had thought with some reason that there is no more dreadful punishment than futile and hopeless labour”

SISYPHUS AT HIS IMPOSSIBLE TASK

I have just invented a new and better name for Amy Martin – SISYPHUS.

He is trying to turn around social progress in Ireland and bring us back to a Confessional Catholic State.

He is on Mission Impossible!

What business is it of the Vatican if i have a hysterectomy?
Is that not between my doctor and me
Same with terminations.
Time to put up and shut up about medical matters.

Like

I have a friend who had a hysterectomy without seeking Church permission. A priest told her off about it.

I kid you not.😕

What business of yours is it if the Vatican preaches in season and out of season, whether welcome to you or not? Time for you to put up and shut up about theological matters.

It matters if what it preaches is homegrown theological tripe.
Jesus never said that his followers would teach reliably, in any season.😆

Diarmuid Martin has failed the people, the priests and seminarians of his diocese. He will always be known as the Shepard who pandered to the irish media and also to certain (ahem) blog sites.
In giving an honest reflection of his leadership, it is fair to say he has not spent that much time in the Dublin Diocese. He has traveled to Rome and elsewhere almost on a weekly basis while his loyal priests on the ground did the real work.
Priests who write to him never get a response. Priests are left to deal with huge issues in their parishes while he sits on his hands planning his next trip back to Rome.
When he retires he will go back to Rome to live in his luxary apartment near the Colosseum. As a retired bishop he will be of no use to anyone anymore in Rome. All his ‘friends’ will suddenly disappear to network with other bishops who can help them climb the ranks.
Diarmuid Martin has been planning his retirement and future postion in Rome for some time now Pat. He must pray that his health issues do not cut his very calculated and long awaited reitrement short. “Psalm 14 6:4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing”.
I pray that the next bishop will bring a spirit of humble fraternity and healing to the Dublin diocese.
Deo Volente

Dear K, thank you for your very honest comment. I did not know that D travelled to Rome that often. His relationship with his priests was very poor. Why? I do not know.
He gained himself a good reputation on abuse.
He and Willy Walsh have been the only two bishops I have been able to engage with in 30+ years.
For some reason I have a soft spot for DM.
In spite of all his limitations I feel his humanity and vulnerability. I like that in a person.
Dublin does need a new, fresh beginning.

Dermot Martin was a disaster. He seems to have no idea of the prejudice he worked out of all his life. His answer to a heartfelt appeal to curtail one of his abusing gay priests was to promote the priest and facilitate him to do even more damage. I also wonder about clergymen who praise him for his ‘handling of the media’.
Pat, the silly pics of E Martin are making you look silly. Can we leave them aside this new year? Better to engage with these guys by how they respond to things. There’s enough silly ridicule.

What prejudice do you mean?

Im also intrigued by the promotion of an abusing priest???

The Bishop of bling/ aka the money bishop/ the scarlet pimpernel is apparently after the Dublin job. With Brexit looming, he can get more money in Dublin for an even bigger pad. His lordship is probably already secretly speaking to architects. Ironic that his living quarters are bigger than the pope’s. Is he Donald Trump’s secret half brother? Disaster as a bishop. Complete conman

I doubt if Treanor would get Dublin. If it happened the priests would be asking DM back.

I was shocked and dismayed when I read about the latest Vatican pronouncement on allowing women to have hysterectomies “in limited circumstances” provided that the “malice” of sterilization is not intended. NB it still advises abstinence as the best solution to this female “problem”. I cannot image any woman giving a fiddler’s what these loathsome old men think she should do regarding the health of her body. More troubling then is the continued disengagement of religion from reality. Horrible old men, whether priests or mullahs or rabbis or – see violence in India re women entering a temple – assorted nut jobs and charlatans all over the world using sexuality as a means of POWER. Sounds familiar? Revolting.

It would be a bit awkward if Gareth Byrne is related to Gorgeous, Bp Pat. Have you examined the family tree?

Like

They are not related. It is clear to the Dublin priests that with DM’s retirement he has no intention of ordaining Gorgeous. This is very sad for a number of reasons. ☹️

Like

It is sad because he took responsibility when he ordained him a deacon. He will retire leaving him in limbo for the rest of his life. That is unfair. There should have been a definitive decision made.

I always felt Gorgeous would be forgiven and eventually ordained like King Puck. Far worse people like Chris Derwin et al have been ordained for Dublin.

In my opinion, he is not the bad person he is painted out to be on this blog at times. The vast majoirty of people he has worked with have very high opinions about him. That is not to say he is perfect or to make excuses but I always felt he deserved a chance at redemption. It has been many years now so the prospect of ordination will die with DM’s retirement.

That is why it is sad to me.

Like

You make good, compassionate points.

I only had one by text conversation with Gorgeous lasting 2 hours.

He struck me as boylike in his maturity and outlook.

I think that he has been and is being used by senior clergy.

Im not sure that after all he has experienced he would do well in ministry?

Like

I do not think it is fair to judge someone’s maturity based on a text conversation. It does not contain feeling or emotion. Plus he may have been very vulnerable at the time. He was clearly very hurt by what was being said about him and wanted to defend himself.
I am basing my opinion on him on the people I know who have experinced his ministry in parishes around Dublin, Mount Joy Prison and the Aids fund housing project in talbot lane in Dublin.
Yes priests and others have tried to use him. That is not his fault; he is attractive. From what I know he turned many of them down which caused them to attack him on this blog when they got their opportunity to get back at him. You know the old saying “a bitch scorned”.

Priests in Waterford & Lismore are well aware that Phonsie is getting ready for Dublin. It’s not a secret hete anymore. The VG is making preparations to become his successor and they have both been up quite a lot recently to the Navan Road in Dublin. Interesting also that DM has had trips recently to Waterford on the QT. The wheels are in motion but I think an announcement is due shortly after Easter. There will be no co adjutor appointed to Dublin either ad it will be a smooth transitional take over.

The Dublin priests do NOT want Paul Tighe as their Bishop. He would be Diarmuid Martin 2.0. He is a networker who only cares about Rome and his career. He is universally disliked by many priests in Dublin. He is cold, divisive, clique orientated and has no pastoral personality.
He will not give up that job in Rome as he knows what he will face in Dublin.

10.52: Pat, having studied with Paul To the and worked with him, he is nothing like he’s described by 10.52: Sour grapes of some kind by this commentator. Paul is rather reticent by nature, kind and considerate but remember he’s in a civil service post and like all civil servants in any organisation he’s bound to have enemies. I have no difficulty with him but I don’t believe he is suited to be AB of Dublin. Perhaps sometime but not now….

Like

10 52: Paul Tighe doesn’t want Dublin. Why would he leave his prestigious role in the Vatican? Archbishop Martin has become exhausted and tired. That’s understandable after the mess he inherited. He has been exceptional in responding to clerical abuse scandals. Exceptional. Sadly, his relationahip with the priests of his Diocese has been very fractured from the outset and has been difficult to feel encouraged under his reign. Here’s hoping for a man of Dom Heldar Camara’s calibre.

The Waterford Priest is correct, sorry to say that the Phonsie rumour is rife in Dublin too since before Christmas. You say Pat that this would be a disaster, aren’t most clerical appointments in Ireland of late not the same. Phonsie is only getting promoted because of the Opus Dei connections and has had a little shopping trip to Rome recently.

The sad thing about this is that they probably view Phonsie as a safe pair of hands. The new Nuncio is as useless as tits on a boar.

What has Theo’s institution become? It is filled with self serving self seeking wannabes. Again I ask, where is Christ in all of this? Does Christ even matter anymore to any of these boys? Why in the name of God are people still giving money to this institution? It is clearly anti-Christian. Power greed lust evil seems to be the order of the day. Christ himself never sought status. Why then do these fools think that it is ok to do so and think they can still be termed followers let alone shepherds of Christ? I am at a loss to understand this. Perhaps some of you enablers, accomplices to this charade can show me where Christ is in all this power hungry mob. I am deeply ashamed that I allowed myself to be fooled by these people for so long. They have taken the purest message of all, that of Christ, and turned it into a farce. Make no mistake, Christ will intervene in this rotten mess. In fact He already is intervening. Whilst we were once blind to this Christ has opened our eyes. I don’t know whether it’s more appropriate to condemn or pity these goings on. A total and absolute affront to Christ. All this crap about his lordship. The most reverend and your holiness titles being given to this band of mafioso is bewildering. There is only one Lord and that’s Jesus Christ

I doubt that at heart he is any worse than most clergy, which is a pretty damming indictment ofclerical corruption.

Whoever is jockeying for power is nothing more than a half-witted fool. In fact most of the bishops currently in Ireland are half wits. They wouldn’t recognise Christ if he stood in front of them. That is unless Christ gave them more money. Their God is spelt GOLD. I have never in my 60 years met more disillusioned Catholics. For years the sadists who masqueraded as holy men tortured us, beat us and looked down on us, took our money under false pretences and fooled us. They were and still are protected by their hierarchy. Sexually abusive priests moved on and allowed back into ministry. Demon “Christian brothers” and nuns who took great delight in battering us. We’ve had Philbin( a complete snob)the weasel Daly, the psychological, emotional and physical abuser Walsh and now the Bishop of Bling overseeing all of this in Our diocese. Why oh why has this been allowed to go on and why is it still being permitted to go on? It matters not one jot who becomes the bishop of Dublin. He’ll be no different from the rest. You can say what you want about the Roman Catholic Church but at least they are consistent. Consistently bad. Time the whole cabal was run out of town.

You ask why it is still being permitted to go on: perhaps largely because ‘grey power’ of the older generation continue to ‘pay up and shut up’. Brought up in the former culture of unquestioning deference they financially maintain an edifice slowly crumbling as the younger generation depart in droves.

Have just found out that Luis Ladaria, prefect of the CDF, is the Vatican bureaucrat who briefed the Press about his (yes, HIS) approval of hysterectomy where sterilisation was not the intention. This is the bastardo who directed that other bastardo, French cardinal Barbarin, to discipline a child-raping priest, but to do it in such a way as to avoid public scandal. In other words, ‘to cover up the crime’.

This man, Ladaria, is being protected by the oily Latino pope on the ground of diplomatic immunity. Ladaria has broken French Law, in a most serious way, and will not face a criminal trial for it. Pope Francis, despite his strong words on child abuse and its concealment by the Church, maintains confidence in this criminal by continuing to approve his headership of the CDF.

How much more evidence is needed to convince people that the institutional Roman Catholic Church is not serious about dealing with clerical child-sexual abuse and its cover-up by Church hierarchs?

Those who have foolishly…stupidly…argued that these acts of abuse were crimes committed by individual priests and bishops and in no way represented Church policy will now have to eat their words. Pope Francis, by his refusal to act against Ladaria, is showing that he morally approves Ladaria’s criminality: the concealment of child rape by Roman Catholic priests.

@11:19 am re “Gorgeous” – redemption and forgiveness, for him, does not involve priestly ordination – far from it – as that is the last thing he or the Church needs.
Ordaining Derwin was a massive mistake. You don’t compound it by ordaining another man who, like Derwin, should never have been admitted to seminary in the first place.
The entire system which allowed them as candidates and ordained such unsuitable men is not fit for purpose. Given the calibre, of those entrusted with formation in Maynooth, this is not surprising.
Formation Directors quizzing students about masturbation, wet dreams, erections, and so on? Really? This is perverse. It is voyeurism. No wonder there are huge problems.
Michael Byrne must be dismisssed from the clerical state of the diaconate so that there is no ambiguity for him or anyone else.
He needs to get on with his life as a layman and, in that way, like most of us, work out the salvation of his soul.

Gorgeous = Deacon Byrne, central figure in Maynooth at the time of scandal in 2016 which Archbishop D.Martin referred to as “Strange goings on”.
Phonsie: The first name of the current Bishop of Waterford.
Slimer: the seminarian’s nickname for Rev. Hugh Connolly when he was Vice President of Maynooth. He later went on to be president and reigned over the “strange goings on” before spending his last year as president “on sabbatical”. He earned his nickname from the obvious over-use of mental reservation thereby causing his use of the truth to be very liberal, loose and slippery.
The Anorak: Rev Fr.Donal O’Neill. A former director of [de]formation in Maynooth. He was infamous for making student’s lives hell, dreaming up issues and projecting them on innocent and sincere young men. Several years later he married and subsequently left the priesthood to be a chaplain in the bons. It is now understood that what he dreamed up and projected onto his students was in fact his own vocational struggles. He destroyed many a vocation in the process. We wont mention the suicide.

Who would want to be Archbishop of Dublin anyway? It’s far too big a diocese, it’s ungovernable and will see further serious decline, which Dermo did nothing to arrest.
Unless, like Dermo and Willie Walsh he sucks up to RTE and preaches a Gospel acceptable to the likes of Fintan O’Toole, the next Archbishop will face an extremely hostile media and live alone in a horrible big house in Drumcondra.
