ARCHBISHOP MC QUAID WAS AFRAID THAT TAMPAX WOULD GIVE WOMEN SEXUAL PLEASURE!

THE MORAL DANGER OF TAMPAX

Margaret Ó hÓgartaigh

Martin Tierney 8

A decade later McQuaid, by now archbishop of Dublin, was still concerned about the movements of Irish women.

tampax-tampax---regular-40-units

In April 1944 he wrote to Dr Conn Ward, parliamentary secretary to the Minister for Local Government and Public Health, and informed him that at the ‘Low Week meetings of the Bishops, I explained very fully the evidence concerning the use of internal sanitary tampons, in particular, that called Tampax. On the medical evidence made available, the bishops very strongly disapproved of the use of these appliances, more particularly in the case of unmarried persons.’ ‘Unmarried persons’ was a euphemism for women. Did men actually use Tampax? Were they seen as a contraceptive device? It requires a remarkable gynaecological imagination to see Tampax as a contraceptive. The more pertinent fear, however, was that women might derive sexual stimulation from Tampax. This reflects the cultural anxieties of the era.
McQuaid’s medical advisor was Dr Stafford Johnson, who had studied in Clongowes Wood College and graduated in medicine from UCD in 1914. He took a particular interest in medico-moral issues and was an enthusiastic advocate for Catholic ethics in medicine. Early in 1944, Stafford Johnson wrote to McQuaid requesting the return of the Catholic Medical Guardian, which he had earlier lent to McQuaid, ‘in which there was given the pronouncement of the English hierarchy on internal tamponage’. With an ill-disguised sinister tone, Stafford Johnson explained that an ‘interesting development has occurred. Tampax has been off the market here for over a year and a half. One of our Knight Chemists [Stafford Johnson was a Supreme Knight of Columbanus] has just rung me up to say it is about to be in stock once more but has not been delivered from the agent.’ The ‘moral dangers’ of Tampax were pointed out to the chemist and the crisis was averted.

It was 1944 after all! The obsession with female fertility so concerned the archbishop that certain middle-class Catholic girls’ schools were discouraged from playing hockey since the twisting movements were alleged to cause ‘hockey parturition’, that is, infertility. Hence lacrosse was favoured. The latter activity did not necessitate as much midriff movement. While these students were physically active, it was within the confines of an all-female environment. Schools under the management of the Loreto sisters participated in their own sports event from 1905. The Loreto Shield was introduced specifically for athletics, 23 years before women were allowed to compete at the Olympic Games in athletics. Students at various Sr Louis schools played a variety of games from basketball to camogie.
Thelma Hopkins (second left), Maeve Kyle (third right) and Mary Peters (second right) departing for the 1958 Empire Games, Cardiff. (Seán and Maeve Kyle)

As long as women were not flaunting themselves in front of males, it was possible to pursue sporting activities. The Women’s Amateur Athletic Association (a women-only organisation) was to have a particular impact on the development of athletics for women in Northern Ireland. Furthermore, when the Northern Ireland Amateur Athletic Association appointed Franz Stampf as coach in the 1950s, he worked with Thelma Hopkins, who went on to break the world record (in May 1956) as well as to win an Olympic silver medal (the following December) in the high jump. Hopkins remembered that when she first played hockey for Ireland ‘we had to wear long black stockings and tunics down to our knees. Really, it was extremely difficult to play. But in the North, we had a lot of support from the men, mainly because Stampfl was there and his athletes were taken seriously.’ It may be no accident that Maeve Kyle (née Shankey), who was born in Kilkenny and played hockey for Trinity College and Ireland, did not become involved in athletics until she married an athletics coach, Seán Kyle, and moved to Ballymena, Co. Antrim. In 1956 she became the first Irish woman to compete in athletics for the Republic of Ireland at the Olympic Games.
As late as the 1960s McQuaid was still concerned with ‘unnatural pleasures’ associated with female gymnastics, especially the pommel horse.

THE IMMORAL POMMEL HORSE

He was apparently unaware of the unnatural pain associated with the event. Both McQuaid’s and later commentators’ obsession with female activity have blinded many to the varieties of activities in which women could indulge, but the sensual sight of mixed athletics did not become a reality in Ireland until the 1960s.

PAT SAYS:

Imagine the Archbishop of Dublin being concerned about women using Tampax in case it gave them any sexual pleasure!

That was CATHOLIC IRELAND from 1925 until 1970.

That’s the Catholic Ireland that Sisyphus Martin in Armagh, Gay is like Downs Syndrome Doran in Sligo and Nasty Phonsie in Waterford wants to bring us back too.

The monthly time for many women can be both painful and distressing.

Wouldn’t it be good if it also afforded them some pleasure?

And what is wrong with pleasure. It is God given.

These dirty ould so and so’s  wanted to deprive us all of pleasure when they were pleasuring themselves with children, men, women, money and power themselves.

As a priest said to me one time:

“Pat, they would not let us get rid of our semen and it went to heads and made us mad”.

Another example of the catholic moral concentration camp called Ireland.
They had little to worry them.
Freakin’ freaks if ever!!🤪

Surely the author is misinterpreting, “unmarried persons”! She also seems to have decided all by herself that the concern was over sexual pleasure. A much more common sense understanding of both is that the concern was to do with the breaking of the hymen. BTW, views on girls worldwide partaking in various sports at that time weren’t all down to Catholicism you know!!

Shows how nutty organised religion can be, then, doesn’t it? And how healthily sceptical people should be of it in all seasons?

Pat, I was rather surprised to read about what Phonsie is trying to do to you? How can he possibly get away with this and why is he gunning for you? I heard this was raised at the last Conference meeting and I was sceptical on hearing it but that post now conforms what I had heard. It seems the only person with a bee in his bonnet about it was Phonsie. Most of the other bishops tended to indicate – leave well alone. Seems like Phonsie is on a crusade against you.

I wonder if fonzie is miffed because this blog has mentioned some of the goings on, past and present, in his current diocese.
Tuesday of this week, Bill Keneally, who’s uncle was the late Fr. Jack Shine, ( Waterford and Lismore) ,was back in court charged with 171 counts of sexual assault of three boys. Maybe fonzie is finding life as a Bishop isn’t all its cracked up to be within clerical circles!

So it wasn’t just in Ireland: the English hierarchy had also pronounced on Tamponage! Old men controlling sexuality especially female is not so different the world over. The image comes to mind of Susannah and the Elders. Dirty old men! Ugh!

Same old stories because same old nonsense is being peddled by the likes of Father Marsden, the promoters of Courage, and the latest absurd pronouncement by the Vatican on not having an hysterectomy for the sheer hell of it! For many years I thought Catholics were becoming adults, but (officially) we are not allowed to be. Some students are organizing a petition against Professor John Finnis over his views on homosexuality as being incompatible with a university such as Oxford. Quite right: a proponent of racial eugenics would not be sanctioned by a prestigious university, but who defends Finnis’s “right” to label gay men as disordered? The Catholic Church of course. Freedom of speech like freedom of religion is not an absolute right. What may be permissible in the private sphere (viz one’s own opinion) should not be given automatic validation in the public realm. It is fine for Finnis to teach natural law just as Galen is of interest in the history of medicine. But a university should not give implicit endorsement to views that are now scientifically and morally neither accepted nor acceptable. Consider the damage being done by the anti-vaccine lobby based on discredited research by one British doctor. Just as McQuaid suborned the medical profession in Ireland, so the academic prestige of scholars such as John Finnis – Elizabeth Anscombe was another – is appropriated to validate the Church’s position in attempting to deny basic human rights and dignity. These concerns are not historic. In the scandal last year of the investigation into Benedictine schools, one of the submissions concerned an elderly disgraced Headmaster (a monk) giving instructions to teenage girls about “fingering” themselves during Lent! Why do we allow this? As Magna regularly reminds us, because we are sheep and, despite everything, hang onto the belief that the Catholic Church is a force for good! Get real!

The Roman Catholic Church’s – and indeed pretty much every Christian Church and major faith – teaching on homosexuality is patently a teaching of hate, which engenders discrimination and prejudice against homosexuals. It is only a matter of time until democratic societies have the courage to outlaw such teaching. Then the RC Church will find itself in the dock for hate crimes. Even the language used by the Churches in itself is sufficient grounds for prosecution in my view. Forget their excuse that they only condemn the sin, not the sinner. Condemning the so-called sin is sufficient to ensure that the sinner is prejudiced and hurt. And all because the Church teaches what is a warped, untruth about homosexuality. They know it. They just don’t think they have to change it. But they will….soon.

What if Jesus regards gay sex in the same way as he regards fornication? It doesn’t take much for anyone to be disordered in any area of life. People seem to be dividing quickly onto the side of Christ or anti Christ. Without the church, pathetic as her leaders are, we would go back to the jungle where there are no rights and that seems to be the way we are headed.

You couldn’t make it up. A pile of supposedly celibate men deliberating on things and bits of the anatomy that they knew nothing about, and would run a mile from if they got a glimpse of it !
As for Phonsie, he’s a chip of that old block, pontificating about things that he really doesn’t know much about, and expecting the rest of us to take note and fall in to line. Well, dear Bishop, we live in different times and we don’t take lectures from the likes of you anymore.
+ Pat, if Phonsie does go gunning for you, I am sure that between us we can find enough dirt on him and his proclivities and activities to shut him up. I would prefer not to delve in to that disgusting murky mindset of his, but if we have to……well, so be the case. And the same goes for any other bishops who want to set themselves up as arbiters of personal and public morality. Expect us to take a closer look at you and yours before we listen to anything you might have to say. We won’t give you the benefit of the doubt any more, given what we know, and we will make sure to shine a light on all those dark corners where you would prefer to hide.
And, finally. Isn’t it just sick making seeing the picture of McQuaid parading down the street bestowing blessings on the people, when we know that the nasty dirty little man was fiddling with kids for his own pleasure ? And that all seems to have been covered up, hasn’t it ?

We do not know if Archbishop McQuaid abused anyone, there was an unsustained rumour that he had walked into a pub for a drink then went upstairs and tried to abuse the son of the family living above the pub sounds and another rumour that he was alluded to but not named in the Ryan report but the folder was lost, surely both of these points could easily be investigated and any of his pupils would be free to come forward with a complaint but nothing has happened

I am the Pope’s representative in Ireland and it’s best that you don’t concern yourself with these matters. Sure the priest was only having a bit of a laugh posting this. He is a good and holy man beyond reproach. May God forgive you for even thinking anything impure about him. You ought to be ashamed of yourself for even thinking this way and for taking up my time with such a trivial matter. For your penance, say three hail Mary’s and pray that God will cleanse your mind and furthermore put an extra £20 in the plate this week as my curates are struggling with the price of condoms. BO 12:00pm. McQuaid was well known for having a sexual perversion towards young boys. He is amongst the worst of the RC devils in that it was he who oversaw the selling off of babies of unmarried mothers. He for the most part controlled DeValera like a puppet and persuaded the govt to allow the Catholic Church and not the state deal with these matters. It has also been shown that he personally covered up abuse by priests as he deemed them not to have been guilty of canononical crimes. In one case he allowed a priest to continue in ministry who was in possession of pictures of female genitalia of children in Dublin hospitals. The said priest explained that he was just curious. McQuaid thought this a reasonable explanation. !! And yet he had the cheek to lecture about tampax. He was a social climber and was bitterly disappointed when he didn’t get a red hat. The papal numpty at the time advised against it because of McQuaids questionable demeanour. Yet another holy bishop exposed. Shock. Horror. Good thing it wouldn’t happen now. Aye right!

i am more than happy to talk about my McQuaid visits. They happened Friday afternoon during 1972 and 1973. McQuaid was my spiritual director and confessor. We also walked in his extensive gardens and had afternoon tea preparer by the nuns. His behaviour was impeccible. He was lonely and deeply resented being retired. I felt that he was deeply repressed. I cannot guarantee that he never misbehaved. I find the pub incident hard to believe. But there were two complaints to the Gardai where files disappeared. He was a typical product of late 19th century and early 20th century Catholicism.

McQuaid was totally weird and a total cold fish. As an ordaining Prelate he swept in and then out and never once offered any warmth or congratulations to the ordinands, some whete from outside Dublin for English dioceses. This man was the heart and soul of clericalism Ireland. For you to sort of defend him Pat makes me wonder about your judgement.

Pat, you benefited spiritually from McQuaid. Aren’t you being hypocritical to talk about him now? For what purpose? We’ve moved on from the Ireland of that period with church and state interlinked in all kinds of corruption, deceit and moral lapses of a criminal nature. The light is now shining on everyone’s hypocrisy and double standards. However, today we may look modernised, secular and full of choices and freedom but there is a rampant individualism evolving where the weak, ill, elderly, special needs children and vnerable homeless families and long term homeless blight our conscience and our claim to be more caring. To say nothing about the horror of abortion….
