His training course took place in the St. John of God psychiatric hospital in Dublin.
The plan for Gorgeous seems to have him as a deacon chaplain at first and if all goes well to ordain him a priest at a later stage.

If this is true, then it is deeply shocking and it is totally unacceptable.
The Dublin stables need mucking out after Diarmuid Martin – not the accumulation of filth, that has built up during his tenure, compounded.
One cannot but wonder at DM’s desperate attempts to ordain Byrne. It’s astonishing. Is there truth to Bill Mulvihill’s allegations last summer? Is DM compromised in his own moral life and activities?

You’d be better off reading a daily portion of the gospels. No one deserves or could endure the public scrutiny, and, in your case, anonymous vilification which this man has been subjected to. If a similar attack were to be launched against an army cadet, or a trainee solicitor or doctor, it would very soon end in defamation and libel. And there would be little public sympathy for the instigators.
Everyone deserves a second chance. The church needs ministers who are real. The time spent in training is the time to make mistakes. Someone going into preparation for a life of service in the West today is coming from within a highly-sexed environment. Some people seem to expect them suddenly and overnight to become Vestal Virgins.

A question that other poster might help me with. I have always wondered how bishops can appoint hospital, school and army chaplains without those posts being advertised – including appoints to State owned and State funded institutions.
Surely such posts should be advertised by the institutions, interviewed for and appointments made. The best person for the job might not actually be a roman catholic priest/sister – it may be a lay person or a person of another faith.

We were led to think he had gone away viz ‘leave the lad alone’ but only the gullible believed that. For sure he will get ordained as priest. The question is what does this mean to ordain an open sexually active gay man? I think rather than dissing him and trying to block him, which got nowhere with Sean Jones, we should see this as a very interesting significant new development, which his bishop should explain. Per se I don’t consider Michael any less suitable to exercise some kind of ministry than anybody else. I hope there is much kindness, goodness and capacity to learn within him, but that is not for me to judge. I do not believe it is either necessary or desirable for him or anybody else to be ordained to do that.

You really could have written the script ! Byrne was never going to go away completely, he was sent off for a cooling off period, then quietly reintegrated in to an out of the way, sector ministry, with a view to him going on to ordination. That will have been the discussion taking place a year ago with his bishop when he left Maynooth. And we were all supposed to be fooled !
The significant thing here is, Byrne will have had to give an undertaking this his promise of celibacy would be fulfilled. Yeah ! I can assure you that a character like that will still be sexually active, even if he has given an assurance with a face as bold as brass. So, he will still be at it, but he will still put a foot wrong, and he will be found out. Then, again, he will give the same reassurance, carry on, and it will go on, and on.
If Byrne had any integrity, or if integrity were asked, expected and required of him by his bishop, he would be leaving the clerical state and go and get a job in the secular world and live as a lay man. Then he wouldn’t have to give any promises he simply intends to break at the first opportunity, and could at least have some integrity in his life. But no, Byrne knows that he can get away with it, and that he is assured a comfortable and affluent life as a deacon / priest / hospital chaplain. And that is too big a prize to give up.
So, boys and girls, keep your eyes open. You will see Byrne out and about and playing around, I assure you. Be it in Dublin, London, Manchester, Paris, Rome, wherever he thinks he can pop off to and enjoy himself. There won’t be any point in telling his bishop about what he is up to, because his bishop will be complicit in this fiction and an accomplice to ensuring that Byrne is ordained and settled in to the priestly clerical life, even though he knows that Byrne’s promises to live the required life of a cleric are a load of lies.
What’s happened to the copper knob Armagh ex-Archbishop’s secretary ? I can guarantee that the same scenario will be playing out there, and he will be, if not already has been, reintegrated in to some ministry somewhere, where he will carry on his antics, with a nod and wink from the local bishop.

Unless, of course, he really does have a conversion of heart and life. But, I suspect that will not be the case. What is supremely ‘sickening’ is your total lack of awareness and concern that this apparently sexually promiscuous gay man, Michael Byrne, may have access to very vulnerable young males in hospital, some of whom may be dying and, therefore, too weak to summon help should Byrne, er, decide to help himself. Not only might they be in danger of sexual assualt by this man (who appears to have caused grave public scandal, which he has never admitted…or, to my knowledge…publicly denied, and for which he has, apparently, never repented, publicly or otherwise), but at risk, too, of spiritual harm by him. Reading the comments today would make a good case study for psychological analysis. Why are people so incredibly turned on by and engaged with Michael Byrne? Putting aside his alleged indiscretions and seeming failings, what is the real motive behind the constant dissecting of his life? Some guys want to sleep with him, others are definitely fantasizing, others are driven by a jealousy, probably after been spurned or rejected by him! There is a nauseous hypocrisy and injustice in the ongoing witch hunt against this man. Why can’t he just be allowed get on with his life? I’m certain that if we were honest with about our own inner, hidden pecadilloes, we might not be so quick to condemn others. The issue is not about desiring him, being jealous of him or whatever. The real issue here is about honesty and integrity. Pure and simple. Byrne has been proven to be unfaithful to his professed promise of celibacy, a requirement to be a priest in the RC Church. Now he is a deacon and taking up a public ministry, and presumably heading for ordination to priesthood, it is not unreasonable for people to question his suitability given his past history. And given his past history it is not unreasonable to wonder about his ongoing future faithfulness to his promise of celibacy, is it ? If I were his bishop I would want to be absolutely assured that he had every intention of keeping his promise of celibacy, rather than sidestepping it when it suits him, and leading a life that is not integrated, honest and transparent. So, I think the questions that are being asked are perfectly legitimate and are being asked for his good and for the good of the Church. They are questions that his bishop should be asking. They are expectations, and questions, that can be asked of anybody who publicly makes a promise of celibacy, and then breaks it. Are you prepared to keep your promise of celibacy ? If yes, and you do, then fine. If no, or you don’t, then you really need to go elsewhere and live your life. Byrne needs a very close eye kept on him. I suspect he has no intention of keeping his promise of celibacy and will find all sorts of ways to circumvent it. My judgement is that he is not a good bet for ordination and his bishop should encourage him to go and find another way of being.

All the inference of wrong doing is and always has been perpetuated by anonymous people on this blog. There has not been one real person to stand behind any of these slanderous allegations about Byrne.
Just because you say something on a blog does not make it true. You talk about scandal but it was you who created it. Pat your “trusted sources” have been wrong in regard to Byrne on a number of occasions it is actully laughable…Garda, jobs, ordination dates, apartments etc etc etc.
There is a weird sick obsession that people have with this young guy. You have harassed him for years with little or very questionable proof. He does not deserve to be talked about like this. Where is his human dignity? What did he do to you Pat? Can i ask people what he did to them? The guy seems to just live his life and a very small percentage of people are even offended by that? It’s just sick.
As Christians, do we not believe people deserve a chance? Or forgivness and mercy? He has been very strong to stand up to this constant vilification. It is online bullying and the people writing these nasty anonymous comments should be ashamed of themselves. I wonder does anyone feel good about themselves after saying such morally reprehensible things?
M. Byrne if you are reading this, stay strong and stay above all of this. The people who actually know you, only have good things to say about your very good character. Keep your integrity and don’t be bated out by these disturbed individuals. Your good nature and being speaks for itself. Don’t let these jealous, sexually perverted sick people get to you. Move onwards and upwards. The day of your ordination will be a celebration of good overcoming evil.

The question at ordination will not be, ‘has he good character?’, rather it shall be an enquiry if his character is beyond questioning.
Those who donate to educate priests may not be happy with how their charitable monies are being used.

What a load of shiite ! Really ! Byrne has proven himself to be unfaithful, lying, duplicitous and untrustworthy. Why should people, who are paying for all he has got and still gets from the Church, not be able to ask perfectly reasonable questions as to his suitability, particularly in the area of celibacy, for the priesthood ? Simple ! It has nothing to do with hounding the guy or having an obsession with him. Normally, I would be happy to leave these questions and decisions to the bishops and the seminary people. But they have proven themselves unworthy of that responsibility and trust. I see no reason why I should not ask the questions that they evidently are not asking. So, go take a run with your holier than thou attitude.

I have no agenda here except the promotion of accountability. Indeed I did mix two scenarios that happened around the same time as each other in Maynooth. An error of memory.
The point remains that the question for ordination is about the candidate’s character being beyond question. This is true of all candidates.
Moreover the rubic asked that the question be answered following enquiries amongst the people of God. Those people include you and me, as well as bishops and seminary staff. If you go to seminary you become a public figure and all of aspects of your life is subject to review. If he dislikes this than he may prefer to return to a more conventional life.

Hi. I’ve been a critic of Deacon Michael on here, but in reflection and after attending holy Mass this evening, I have decided that it is unchristian and he deserves to be left alone now. We are his supporters because we see him very unfairly and cruelly treated. It’s a sound Irish instinct to come to the side of anyone who is the victim of bullying and persecution. And not that the anti-Gorgeous ranters are unable to name any concrete issue about him (they must have forgotten about the original allegations whatever they were).
