Pope admits clerical abuse of nuns including sexual slavery

Pope Francis made the admission while visiting the Middle East
Pope Francis has admitted that clerics have sexually abused nuns, and in one case they were kept as sex slaves.
He said in that case his predecessor, Pope Benedict, was forced to shut down an entire congregation of nuns who were being abused by priests.
It is thought to be the first time that Pope Francis has acknowledged the sexual abuse of nuns by the clergy.
He said the Church was attempting to address the problem but said it was “still going on”.

Pope Francis made the comments on Tuesday to reporters while on a historic tour of the Middle East.
He admitted that priests and bishops had abused nuns, but said the Church was aware of the issue and “working on it”.
“It’s a path that we’ve been on,” he said.
“Pope Benedict had the courage to dissolve a female congregation which was at a certain level, because this slavery of women had entered it – slavery, even to the point of sexual slavery – on the part of clerics or the founder.”
Alessandro Gisotti of the Vatican press office later told CBS News that the order in question had been based in France.
Pope Francis said sexual abuse of nuns was an ongoing problem but happened largely in “certain congregations, predominantly new ones”.
Last November, the Catholic Church’s global organisation for nuns denounced the “culture of silence and secrecy” that prevented them from speaking out.
Just days ago the Vatican’s women’s magazine, Women Church World, condemned the abuse, saying in some cases nuns were forced to abort priests’ children – something Catholicism forbids.
The magazine said the #MeToo movement meant more women were now coming forward with their stories.

PAT SAYS

Francis is only acknowledging a truth we all know.

How can Francis sleep at night knowing about all the abuse and corruption he knows about?

The pot-bellied Latino has admitted nothing the international media didn’t compel him to admit. Don’t be under any illusion about Papa Francesco: he would much rather have kept all of this hidden. And he probably has known of it for decades.
These parasites prefer secrecy and subterfuge to truth and trasnsparency.

Is that post of yours an excuse for not addressing my argument; it’s a poor one.😅

Why don’t you take your brain for a walk by tackling my points and not my person?😆

It is vitally important that nuns be encouraged to speak about their abuse, not just sexual but also domestically. Some new orders of religious women from poorer countries often end up as housekeepers for high officials and clerics in Rome and the Vatican and elsewhere. It is slavery. I have never liked the concept and argued with clerical personnel that if they want to help these women they should provide educational opportunities for them instead of using them as slaves. I hope Pope Francus firbida all religious sisters frim being used as caretakers of clerics. There are some wonderfully brilliant sisters and lay women in Rome who should be in charge of various commissions and offices. It might bring newness and enlightenment to a male hierarchy which sees only through its own lens. They very often miss the real “realities” and “nuances” of life. Religious sisters sbould never by abused or used by any cleric.

What treatment of women did you expect from mysogynistic priest-parasites at the Vatican and elsewhere?😕

None. And yet Papa Francesco praises Benedict for showing ‘courage’.
A pity Benedict didn’t show courage when he concealed all reports globally of sexual abuse by his fellow priest-parasites when he was prefect of the CDF (including reports about that other priest-parasite and serial paedophile, Fr Maciel.😕

The Vatican has been forced to admit that the tiresome old windbag mispoke. In one of the many clarifications issued by Vatican News during this horrendous pontificate it was explained that there were not in fact nun slaves and he had exaggerated and used it in a different sense to the ordinary meaning. #fakenews

Strawman argument is just as ‘fake’ as the information you claim to be so.
The point (and you deliberately ignored it) is that nuns have been, and are being, sexually abused (raped) by Roman Catholic priest-parasites. 😆

Dr David Starkey is right: this church is ‘corrupt, and riddled with corruption.’😆

The post claims that “we all know” about priests reducing nuns to sexual slavery. Really? I thought of India and Africa but the order that was shut down is in France!

Of course the solution is simple: It’s all the fault of those dratted deep-seated heterosexual tendencies. Root out the heterosexuals and the problem is solved.

I have a sense that sexual abuse and mistreatment of sisters / nuns is a minority interest, and that maybe it is raising its head as a means of diverting attention from the much more serious and existential problems that exist in the Church today, particularly abusive clerical culture, abuse of the vulnerable, misuse of power and authority….etc etc. The Church is very good at transference or redirection. Note the blaming of the Devil and then homosexual clergy in the Church for the avalanche of abuse. When will Pope Francis and the hierarchy realise that the root cause of so much of the dysfunction in the Church is the clerical culture and hierarchy that has been allowed to dominate for centuries, which is exclusive, privileged and entitled, and which believes that it can do what it wants. The secular authorities have seen through this and are beginning to take some control of the the situation (note the various investigations of the Church being done by secular authorities in the USA and in the UK with IICSA). When will the Church begin to take serious notice instead of transferring blame, and missing the real issues at stake ? Probably not soon, because Pope Francis et al are in thrall to the clerical culture and hierarchy in to which they have been educated and ordained, and to look at themselves is very difficult. Maybe it does need outside agencies to take a grip of the Church and make it change. It doesn’t seem capable of doing so itself.

Like

We’ve been ‘trying change since 1962’? No we haven’t; not where it matters most.
The priest-parasites still think of themselves as ‘ontologically changed’ at ordination; it’s a doctrine of the Church. It is also the root of clericalism.
A recently published study by an American theologian called upon priests not to think of themselves as superior to lay folk. But then, mindboggingly, it failed to challenge this gross doctrine; worse, it affirmed it!😲
Arrgh!😕

Just a clarification: abuse of sisters / nuns is a manifestation of the general culture of abuse in the Church, but is by no means as widespread as abuse of children and other vulnerable people. I think the focus might have been put on this abuse of sisters / nuns in part to move the focus, because it is sort of ‘internal Church’ stuff, involving people who are part of the structure of the Church. Focusing on this is like dealing with private grief and will not involve others, at least that is probably what they are thinking and hoping. It is still wrong, and it is an element of wider phenomenon of abuse, but it is not the real issue, which Francis and so many seem to want to keep ignoring.

Mag the fag more like. He was shunned by the rough Irish Catholic country boys in his school in Downpatrick, who had little time for precious young fusspots, especially because of the hint of an English accent and uninterested in games.
But he learned the power of the cutting word. Expecting to be hated he learned to get people to dislike an obnoxious persona. In attacking it they were not attacking the real MC, so his troubled, gauche and spotty self was safe for a while.
Then he found two niches: to be ostentatiously better at the books and be a priest. That would show them. Two pedestals at once.
It unravelled though, as it was only QUB and Maynooth and they didn’t want him in the end. It’s a long hard and lonely life ahead for MC. Be kind to him.

Karen at 5.10: Magna, whoever he is deserves a life of long misery and isolation. His abusive and nasty persona deems him unfit, unsuitable and an endangerment for any meaningful connections. He carries a health warning. Ever since his seminary rejection he has descended into the depths of depravity, drink of course quickening the process….

Can you give a rough idea of when MC was in Maynooth? 80s or 90s – early, mid or late? I’d suspect that his time there was short.

Magna, they have no answer for you. Not one of them can discuss the justifiable points you make.

I know MC from way back. I expected him to comment more on Birmingham matters but hey. Generally in my experience there are very few propositions expressed by another with which MC will agree initially. The contrarian instinct is far too entrenched now and he thought himself a student debater though it gets harder to find funny the older he gets. Though he’s at a milestone now so is a bit touchy about it.

Readers of The Tablet might have noticed this:

https://www.thetablet.co.uk/news/11323/pope-s-uk-envoy-fails-to-give-evidence-to-abuse-inquiry-

This is the Church trying to frustrate investigations by secular authorities in to the behaviour of its clergy and institutions. it will all be dressed up in diplomatic immunity and privilege and use and custom, but it is evident that if the Church is serious about addressing these issue it would want to willingly cooperate with investigations. And if the Nuncio has information pertinent to this investigation, then it should be shared. If not, we can be left with on alternative other than to think that the Church continues to pervert the cause of truth and justice in its own interests. Well, we already know that, don’t we ?

Most UK Bishops treat Nuns like slaves. I hear the new man in Lancaster kept on the previous incumbent’s Nuns in his grace and favour house to cook, clean and to wash his clothes. These women are highly educated and worth much more than that and it is an absolute disgrace that they have been brainwashed into “serving” like this.
