POPE OFFERED $1 MILLION TO GO VEGAN FOR LENT

NEW YORK – Pope Francis has been challenged to go vegan for Lent – and in exchange for his sacrifice, he’d receive a $1 million donation to a charity of his choice.
The high-stakes deal is being offered by a 12-year-old animal rights activist, Genesis Butler, and the Million Dollar Vegan campaign.

Earlier this week, an open letter was published appealing to the pope to abstain from all animal products during Lent, which is set to begin on March 6 for Catholics and will end at Easter. The letter makes a strong case that a vegan diet will yield dividends for the environment.

“Your Holiness, we must act,” writes Butler. “Moving towards a plant-based diet will have substantial environmental benefits. It will protect our land, trees, oceans, and air, and help feed the world’s most vulnerable.”
Should the pope accept the offer, the million-dollar donation would be made by the Blue Horizon International Foundation, which seeks to “accelerate the removal of animals from the global food chain.”
In her letter, Butler also cited the pope’s 2015 encyclical Laudato si’, wherein he calls for collective common action to fight environmental degradation.
“In your encyclical letter, Laudato si’, you stated that every effort to protect and improve our world will involve changes in lifestyle, production, and consumption. I agree with all my heart and seek your support in tackling one of the largest underlying causes of the problems we face: animal agriculture,” wrote Butler.
In response to the initiative, Dan Misleh, executive director of Catholic Climate Covenant, told Crux, “It is so encouraging to see young people stepping up and reaching out. From their perspective, the future is grim and, fortunately for all of us, they are acting.”
While Misleh says a vegan diet may not be for everyone, he believes “we all need to consider a reduction in meat consumption as part of our response to climate change.”
“At a minimum, Catholics in wealthier countries ought to consider meatless Fridays and not just for Lent but for every Friday of the year. Wouldn’t that be a great witness to the world?” he asked. “It would be one very concrete way to rise to the challenges outlined by Pope Francis in Laudato si’.”
Kirsten Powers, a CNN political analyst and USA Today columnist, who is a vegetarian, concurred with Misleh and told Crux she hopes the pope accepts the offer.
“I pray that Pope Francis will accept this challenge to raise awareness of the grave damage the consumption of animal products does to the environment,” she said.
“A plant-based diet would also be better for the Holy Father’s health and for the animals that God has entrusted to the care of humans,” Powers continued.
Such a dare may prove intimidating for the Argentine pontiff, where his native country’s beef is one of its national treasures. In 2016 Argentina ranked second in the world for per capita meat consumption, just behind neighboring Uruguay.
Yet Fordham University theologian and author of the book For Love of Animals: Christian Ethics, Consistent Action Charles Camosy told Crux that there are three reasons he believes the pope should give it serious consideration.
“First, it witnesses to the nonviolent world God intended as revealed at the end of Genesis 1 and the nonviolent Kingdom to come with the lamb will lay down with the lion and the baby by the cobra’s lair. Second, it would put it in solidarity with our Orthodox Christian brothers and sisters who basically go vegan during Lent. And third it would be an important witness to how consuming animal products contributes to the existential threat of global climate change,” he said.
Camosy, who is also a contributor to Crux, said it would also “signal to climate skeptics-the people we need to convince-that people who claim that this is an existential threat are willing to change the way they live, not just call for the government coercion of others.”
The challenge from Butler and the Million Dollar Vegan campaign comes at a time when the intersection between the environment, pro-life concerns, and animal welfare are increasingly linked together. Camosy said that “care for non-human animals, and treating them with kindness…is something that is quite ‘hot’ in Christian theology right now.
“Perhaps counter-intuitively, moral concern for animals returns us to a pre-Vatican II time in which the moral manuals actually took the ethics of our food choices seriously,” he continued. “The humanism of Vatican II – which elevated human beings in problematic ways over the rest of creation – actually stifled some of the development of how our food choices relate to moral concern for animals.”
To date, the Vatican has not announced whether or not Francis will accept the challenge.

PAT SAYS

Francis does not need a measly $1 million. He already has billions at his disposal.

But the questions of being vegetarian and vegan are real issues.

As an animal lover I ponder these questions all of the time – but have never come to a conclusion.

I dont even like to think about the things that happen in slaughter houses 😱

I am really interested to hear what readers think.

I wonder what vegans talk to each other about? They only ever talk to the rest of us about being vegan, and I suspect that once they’ve got past telling each other they’re vegan, they go on to confide their craving for a steak.

Francis looks as though he could lose a few pounds so veganism might suit him. Cardinal Burke certainly could benefit from a vegan diet. He’s a lardy, oily, overweight old dame. Yuk !

Extraordinary the hostility vegans attract. I don’t like stunts such as giving up something for Lent or sponsored runs, as they tend to be gestures pointing at the person rather than the cause – so may well appeal to Francis! However, the young lady’s intentions are surely good, and the issues she raises are real and massive. To put it crudely, the Church works very well with rapacious capitalism: keep on producing as many human beings as you possibly can who will become consumers with insatiable demand for goods. All this bullshit about respect for life when we are making our planet unliveable, and we show scant respect for our fellow creatures, also created by God who saw them good ( i.e. intrinsically good not just as means to our ends ).

Though I wouldn’t want to detract from today’s important subject, tomorrow’s blog should surely be on a book to be published on 21st February “In the Closet of the Vatican” by French sociologist Frederic Martel – see headline on today’s Tablet. No surprises there for readers of this blog, but it’s time to show the world what these toxic old queens who prevent decent people from going to communion and denigrate homosexuals as disordered are REALLY like. Nice synchronicity with Old Mother Burke’s website: no connection there, surely?

Vegan evangelisation cum politics.
Political evangelisation is just another form of tyranny masquerading as a public good. And vegans, clearly, aren’t above it.
As always in these instances, there is a hidden agenda: have one of the most gullible, most inconsistent popes in papal history take a vegan ‘holiday’ (along with that million-dollar bribe that would obviously appeal to an innate Christ-betrayer) and, vegan fingers crossed, the fool will be converted to the vegan cause. Then sit back and wait while time, and this papal clown, come together, at the right moment, to produce (or ressurrect) canonical restrictions/prohibitions on meat consumption for Catholics.
It might have worked way back in the 1950s, but it won’t universally work now. Too much water (most of it childrens’ tears mingled with their blood) has passed under time’s bridge for any of us to take seriously, any longer, these clerical parasites when they pronounce on public morality.

Some juicy stories doing the rounds this morning. The Catholic Herald reports that a journalist claims that as a West Point cadet he was publicly groped during an interview with Francis, Cardinal Spellman. Lots of pigeons finally coming home to roost. Will we now finally get some truthfulness out of the Church? Fat chance. It will be business as usual with types such as Cardinal Gerhard Müller desperately trying to gain credibility by denying people communion.

Unsurprisingly one of the points made in the forthcoming book is that those most vociferous against homosexuality are themselves likely to be homosexual. For over forty years Joseph Ratzinger was responsible for deeply offensive anti gay comments, yet one cannot help remarking on his own character and living arrangements all these years.

Jesus was clearly not a vegan and the vision given to Peter certainly didn’t recommend it, so why should the church be bothered about the silly suggestion of a million quid. The world, it’s people and environment are declining because of sin. A genuine pope would recommend prayer and penance for people esp the youth.

A lot of vegans are pro aborts. Don’t harm the cuddly little puppies and cute kittens. Don’t kill the lovely moo cows. But by all means rip a small child limb from limb in the womb and hoover him/her out. Nauseating hypocrisy. No time for them.

Exactly. The latest fad. Not even vegetarian but bloody vegan. Ridiculous. They think the human population should be culled as “we are killing the planet.” Babies? Abort them but don’t kill a chicken! How many farmers in Ireland would lose their livelihoods? How much beans, nuts etc would have to be imported to ensure the world had a balanced diet, and what about the carbon footprint of that? This child has been at this since she was 10. What does she know except the pseudo science which she has been fed by adults? But it sounds better coming from a child. What about the former millionaire model with the jet set lifestyle who paid for the “research” released a few weeks ago which said we should all be vegan and should be eating no more than a quarter piece of bacon or something equally ridiculous.
Find a backbone and use common sense. Meat and farming is absolutely fine but maybe cut back on the factory farming by greedy people. China belching smoke into the atmosphere, self important politicians and film stars globe trotting in huge cavalcade, private jets and yachts while we are afraid to eat a sausage. Wise-up!

5.05: You are absolutely right. These new dictators (vegans) are all about saving the whale and carrots but kill the innocent baby in the womb. Hypocrites, the lot of them. Shameful.

Humans are designed to eat meat. The presence of cutting canine teeth shows this by design. The Bible is quite explicit that there is nothing wrong with eating meat per se also.

However in a world of limited resources where Hunger is a real problem one might ask what is an appropriate Christian response? If adoption of a plant based diet helps to preserve resources and helps conserve resources to help the worlds hungry then maybe it is worth a go?

If there was a definite link between adoption of a plant based diet and that directly corresponding to helping the poor I could be persuaded.

Like

Personally I can’t see how a vegan diet can possibly be healthy. I’m also not convinced by the argument that cows’ flatulence is a problem, since if we all become vegetarian *our* flatulence will become the problem!
I would rather think that we have evolved to eat meat, than being designed for it. Eating huge amounts of red meat is obviously not healthy, but surely our bodies are calling for moderation?

I have never understood why being anti abortion should turn people into such raving shits. For once we are not discussing chopping up babies – which is not what safe legal access to abortion rights is in any case. Now wait for it!

I agree with you, without either intellectual or moral reservation: abortion IS murder. And there will be a terrible reckoning for it, in this life, but, individually, much more so in the next, when we all will see things as God sees them, not as we rationalise and justify them to ourselves here.

Like

It’s because abortion is just another smoke screen, and provides a handy emotive issue to distract from the Catholic church’s actual lack of interest in any life except that of the hierarchy. I literally wouldn’t trust the church to look after anything, not a child, not buildings, not even its own clergy.

Like

You’re absolutely spot on at 10:35 pm. No matter how appalling the crime, such as abuse of children, there is always some character who pops up to say that it is not as bad as abortion. And who then is morally redundant?

It’s not all churchmen on here, you know. There are some things it is morally IMPERATIVE to get very angry about – and murdering babies is right up there. What a prat you are! Propagandised by the Jewish collaborator with the Nazis against his own people: Soros – and you think you are a liberated Free-thinker! You were probably one of the morons dancing and cheering at the right to murder Irish babies.
Murdering babies is wrong, don’t excuse yourself you can do it because of disgusting priests. ” priests are disgusting, so let’s murder babies.” Listen to yourself!

Actually that’s exactly what IT IS. Educate yourself. In fact, inform yourself in the disgusting trade in baby parts. You delude yourself. Do you understand a Venn diagram? Well, the overlap between vegan fascists and pro-abortionists is the huge overlap in the middle, despite the moral dichotomy. THAT is why abortion has once again been included as part of the discussion.

Actually it does seem rather ridiculous given he had his mates with him at the time. Spellman may have been a bit gaga by then, as the late revered President Bush also got a bit handsy in his dotage. Well, I thought the tale of all those trinkets didn’t quite ring true, unless Spelly really was losing his marbles – he died not long afterwards. I also suspect the “Dashing Young Prince” as he describes himself in a New York Times story from June 4, 2013 also had a very high estimation of himself. The NYT article describes that same fairy-tale weekend he met Spellman, but focuses on the girls for whom he was the escort of their dreams, and one cannot help wondering about his careful selection of “facts” to suit a good story. True there has long been tittle-tattle about Spellman, just as about that other sacred monster, his friend J.Edgar Hoover, but nothing ever substantiated.

Lots of misogynistic comments oh here today.
Posters forget that women read and post here.
Some also seem to forget that men are vegan also.
The vegans I know are steadfastly antiabortion, although I don’t agree with that…I do recognise that people are free to eat whatever suits their choice.
As for myself I tend toward a flexitarian way of eating.

Now you wouldn’t be mistaking misogyny for being pro life now would you?
A lot of you pro aborts do that – in your utterly perverted twistedness.
Most vegans I know are pro aborts. They are unable to see the sheer horrible irony of their position. Don’t kill animals but nothing wrong with putting an unborn boy or girl through a blender.
“Safe” abortions is it? Nothing safe about it for the child against whom the crime is committed, whose body is shredded and whose life is snuffed out.
You make me sick.

Thanks for that post.
From another WOMAN.
If we don’t want baby girls aborted ( or boys either ) we are now “misogynists.”
And as to the very SPECIFIC targeting of female babies, just look to the large number of gender selective abortions among asians in the U.K. – often performed by doctors of the same culture.
But ssshhh! we aren’t allowed to mention that.
