DID CARDINAL SPELLMAN GROPE AN ARMY CADET?

NY archdiocese responds to Cardinal Spellman groping allegation

Kevin Jones/CNA

12 February, 2019

A journalist claimed Spellman tried to grope him while he was a cadet in the 1960s
The Archdiocese of New York has said it had only recently learned of an allegation that the deeply influential Cardinal Francis Spellman groped a visiting West Point cadet in the 1960s, but says it will take the accusation seriously and has invited the accuser to contact the archdiocese.
“This is the first time we have learned of this allegation, and take what the writer says seriously, as we do all allegations of abuse or inappropriate conduct,” Joseph Zwilling, director of communications for the Archdiocese of New York, told CNA on February 11. “We have never had a substantiated allegation of abuse against Cardinal Spellman, who died in 1967.”
Lucian K. Truscott IV, a longtime journalist and writer, made the claim about the former Archbishop of New York in a February 9 essay at Salon.
According to Truscott, the alleged incident took place in 1967 in Spellman’s private quarters behind St Patrick’s Cathedral. Truscott said he was a junior at West Point who had sought to interview Spellman for the cadet magazine, The Pointer.
In Truscott’s account, apparently written decades after the fact, he was in a sitting room with the 77-year-old Spellman, his monsignor assistant, and two other West Point cadets, including the magazine’s photographer. Even before the interview began, Spellman placed his hand on the cadet’s thigh and attempted to grope him, Truscott said.
According to Truscott, the monsignor intervened, chastised the cardinal, and placed the cardinal’s hand back in the lap. Truscott said this happened several times during the interview.
Truscott wrote that the cardinal gave him a small gift after each attempted incident of groping. “He did it over and over again, and I just kept asking questions and recording his answers like nothing happened. I left the cardinal’s residence that day carrying a couple of tie clasps, three key chains, and a couple of gold-plated tie tacks,” the essay claimed.
Truscott said he was shocked the incident happened in front of others and was sure he would not be believed if reported. He claimed the photographer had taken photos of the incidents and he and the other two cadets treated it as a joke after it was over.
Truscott said he now wishes he hadn’t laughed off the experience and wishes he had reported it instead, given revelations about sex abuse in the Church.
“I wasn’t an innocent victim. I was an adult, a cadet at West Point, and I knew better,” said Truscott.
Zwilling said the archdiocese encourages reports about alleged misconduct.
“We would welcome Mr Truscott in contacting the archdiocese, and reporting his allegation to our Safe Environment Director and/or the Victim Assistance Coordinator, so that we might offer whatever assistance might be needed,” Zwilling said.
While Truscott was not a minor at the time of the alleged incident, the New York legislature recently passed legislation extending the period for child victims of sex abuse to bring civil charges until the age of 55. Criminal prosecutions can be brought before the victim turns 28.
The legislation also creates a one-year window for victims of any age to come forward.
Cardinal Spellman was one of the most deeply influential churchmen of the United States.
Originally a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston, he worked in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State in the 1920s and 1930s and smuggled Pope Pius XI’s anti-fascist encyclical “Non Abbiamo Bisogno” to Paris for its 1931 release. He served as an Auxiliary Bishop of Boston from 1932-39, and was named Archbishop of New York by Pope Pius XII, a role that included oversight of the military vicariate of the armed forces during the Second World War and beyond.
He was a staunch anti-communist close to controversial FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. He has been the subject of rumors about sexual misconduct, though not necessarily abuse.
The cardinal’s lengthy FBI file, as published in a somewhat redacted and possibly incomplete form at the FBI website, includes many interactions with the bureau and with Hoover; his public statements and speeches; and information about Vietnam War protests targeting the cardinal. At one point a January 20, 1954 memorandum to Hoover described Spellman an FBI contact who “can be of assistance in furnishing information concerning prominent Catholic priests and laymen” and who has “on several occasions made available information in connection with research matters.”
The released files include a December 1954 request from Spellman’s office to the FBI to investigate an anonymous tip that a communist-linked publisher aimed to print a book vilifying the cardinal and the Catholic Church, apparently claiming the cardinal had a scandalous relationship with a woman.
FBI agents found no proof that such a book was forthcoming.
The publisher of a Spellman biography released in 1984 removed a passage citing several people who claimed he had a homosexual relationship; none of them had direct proof, the New York Times reported.

PAT SAYS

It has been generally accepted for years that Spellman was an active homosexual who had many sexual partners.

He also had himself dispensed from saying the Divine Office because he was “too busy”.

He was really more of an administrator than a pastor.

But I have heard he was known to perform very kind human acts.

His case is further indication that a great number of bishops and priests have been active homosexuals.

Cardinal Cody of Chicago used to out dressed as a women with J Edgar Hoover of the FBI.

Thanks for the link.
What a pervert that bastardo Spellman was. Scum! And he was absolutely brazen about it. No inhibitions; no shame. In fact, he tried, again and again, to grope that young man’s genitals in the presence of three others. What self-assurance! What arrogance these vile Roman Catholic clerical bastardos display! Scum!
Reminds me of the priest who gripped my thigh in a catechetics class and left his hand there while he continued to address the others. I was mortified, in shock and disbelief:
No! Don’t be silly. He isn’t doing anything pervy. What? In a roomfull of onlookers? Don’t be silly.😕

I have always found Spellman to be a fascinating character. As an astute manager, he was as much the archetype of successful confident fifties America as he was a Catholic. It is impossible to credit a Churchman today with that kind of public clout. Though within living memory, the Church he embodied no longer exists except in the fantasies of wannabes such as Old Mother Burke. ( Cardinal, you are no Francis Spellman. ) It is just widely assumed that he was an active homosexual, without any specific evidence, save now for this hand on the knee. He was certainly keen on the military, and deplorably backed America’s disastrous foray into Vietnam. His time was already over in the sixties, so the question is where are we going now? Forget Spellman, and demand answers concerning the Vatican today. On a local level, we should demand much more accountability from our local parish and diocese, as this blog has called for time and again. Why are congregations so passive? Demand a meeting or stand up in Church to demand answers. What are we scared of – excommunication? Can it really be that Cardinal Cody and J.Edgar went round town together in drag? I’m a bit suspicious, as Christopher Hitchens used to claim that Spellman had a wardrobe of designer evening gowns. The mind boggles at the thought of all three of them together, all in “outsize”!

Like

1.10: I agree with you about forgetting Spellman. Look at today’s crisis within the Church. What can we do? Stand up and shout in our Churches? That won’t work. We should instead invite, as I constantly do, people into dialogue and reflection at local level. Let’s try and do what’s imaginative and possible in our local parish community. We can miss opportunities for true renewal within our grasp if we focus too frequently on the bigger picture. Important as it is we must do what we can as local christian communities to be truly Christ-like. Let us be light, leaven and icons of real, effective gospel living in our parishes. While I despair at the bigger picture, I know my limitations as s priest but I also k ow what I can and must do within myself and cat local level.

Cop out. These “truly Christian communities” line usually means non-controversial, go with the times platitudes: feed, clothe, buy tanks of oil for “refugees” while the ones doing it leave their poor locals destitute and looked down upon because they are not “exotic” enough. “Refugee” helping is the new fashion accessory – the new version of a pooch in a designer handbag.
Offertory processions at Mass, photos for school magazines, parts in school nativities and plays -all go completely disproportionately to migrants. No local poor people or Catholic children need apply. But, “we’re such a welcoming parish, look what we do for foreigners!”
Do you ever stand up for the people who are paying you and entrusted to your spiritual care? Do you ever have the balls to tell them right from wrong? Thought not.

Like

Very thoughtful and honest, Father @9:42. I am the last one to encourage shouting matches during Mass, BUT I am also appalled at congregational passivity when we are treated to the thoughts of the Bishop or PP, as if we are all meekly of the same mind. I was annoyed with myself some years back when treated to a pastoral letter from the Bishops of E & W ( of whom how many are homosexual? ) exhorting us to lobby our MP against gay marriage, and merely tried to avoid the mad old bat with the petition on the way out. We had one straight bishop back then, Kieron Conry, who, like me, probably wouldn’t have given a monkey’s either way about gay marriage, but nor would he have made it an article of faith. The trouble with dialogue and reflection is that it can end up like ACTA, a network of harmless old pussy cats, some of who may well be practising vegans. Just to demonstrate how out of touch the bishops are, Michael Campbell laughably banned it in Lancaster diocese under the very mistaken assumption it was connected with its far more feisty American counterpart; fat chance!

Why are congregations so passive? What else could they be when they are continually referred to by Roman Catholic clerical parasites as ‘sheep’ and ‘flock’, and the parasites themselves as ‘shepherds’?
In 1905, Pope Pius X issued an encyclical, ‘Vehementor Nos’, in which the stuffy old parasite reminded lay Catholics that they had a duty to ‘allow themselves to be led’.
By whom?
By the clerical parasites, of course. The ones that were raping, buggering, and molesting their youngsters while abstaining from paid employment so that they could ‘fleece’ their parents.
Yes, this was all willed by dear old Jesus, who had such love for his ‘sacerdotal’ souls (but didn’t give a s**t about the kids they were harming).

Corruption in this institution is endemic. Unfortunately Francis will only pay lip service to it. It’s now about damage limitation and not fully addressing the corrupt church that he oversees. The men and women in this institution who have carried out all forms of abuse are an insult to Christ and an insult to the faithful. Shocking is not strong enough a word. It is an abomination. Spellman is entitled to be presumed innocent until proved otherwise but he won’t be the only prince of the church to be exposed. The chickens are coming home to roost in ever greater numbers. Is this what many Catholics gave their lives for? This institution needs reformed in Christ’s name from top to bottom and needs to be done urgently. Too many have suffered at their hands.

Storming Heaven with prayer and offering personal sacrifice is what’s needed.
But that’s so unfashionable today. What a quaint idea.
Mary came all the way from Heaven to tell us THAT? Goodness me, why didn’t she say something sensible like, ” Stop eating meat, wearing leather shoes, quit having sprogs, and all is permissible if your ill-informed conscience says so in relation to sexual morals.” Get with the times, Mary!

It sounds to me as if Spellman may have been ga-ga by this time ! But I do not doubt that a number high of church people were gay, some active, some repressed. They invariably would have been publicly vitriolic about gays, a sure sign of the own repressed sexuality. So many of them were and are severely repressed and angrily unhappy. Burke is a prime example. She’s a queen if I ever saw one, all that dressing up, all that right wing traditionalist nonsense, and yet beneath it all he will be sniffing around any eligible young men, I assure you. Sure there are many stories to be told.

The usual mantra to stop criticism of homosexuality: “don’t criticise because it means you’re one yourself.”
You’re deluded. I can criticise whatever I see fit to, and it doesn’t mean I secretly want to be part of what I’m criticising. Nor does the strength of my criticism. All self-protecting defence strategies espoused by homosexuals because they can’t face truth.
As for “right wing, traditionalist nonsense” – grow up and beyond your narrow indoctrination. There is a great big world out there that thinks independently of Netflix, Hollywood, German and fascist “liberalism.” Right-wing means nothing but having common sense and thinking for yourself. Go hit a Trump piñata with Beto or fly a balloon with the Khan’t. Simple minds.

No, Spellman was not ‘ga-ga by this time’; the reporter made that absolutely clear.
Spellman was just a dirty old man, clerically privileged enough and powerful enough to believe, correctly as it turned out, that he could do whatever the hell he wanted, however vile, to whomever he wished, and get away with it.
That’s institutional Roman Catholicism…and her Christ-betraying clerics.

I am indeed very logical.
Go back over these blogs, say for a period of a year. Count how many times any criticism of homosexuality has been countered by a nasty remark about the poster being homosexual themselves. That is even without including the calling of any clergy who they don’t agree with homosexual as well. In the latter case some of these clergy may be homosexual, but some may not.
Calling others homosexual is the primary reflexive response of posters on this site to any criticism of homosexuality.
Come back to me when you have done the tally.

@10:37, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, some anger issues there. Great fodder for photo opportunities – Elsie enjoys those and is a busy bee in Buenos Aires right now, leaving Wood Green to take care of itself.

Here we go again, no one can object to homosexuality unless they have something to hide. Ye got me, I’m a raving lesbian! Does that make you feel better? Except it’s not true.
As to why it should matter to me? Am I not entitled to express my views to shape the society I and my children live in? Is that only reserved for homosexuals, men who think they are women and movie stars? If my children have children and die in an accident, do I get to bring up my grandchildren? No, too old. But I might have to watch two sodomites get custody of them and there would be nothing I could do to protect them. So why should I not uphold Almighty God’s rules for a happy, healthy life and society?

WHY should foreigners get special treatment over LOCAL downtrodden? Conveniently avoided my main point.
Just watched a middleclass luvvie slobbering over a Roma big-issue seller to teach her child the liberal mantra that foreign good, local bad. Meanwhile the poor from the estate across the road walking into the shop were totally ignored by her and her child. No patronising smiles for them. No danger of her child really mixing with a Roma you see, but the son of someone unemployed from an estate, well, can’t mix with them! Locals are wasters who don’t manage their money properly and all food bank donations should include rice etc because of who it’s actually going to, but the fake refugees ( who can spin any tales they want) are the Catholic priests / charities easy feel good badges of honour. They aren’t jumping you on the housing ladder, are they? They aren’t getting special priority to get their children into scarce local nursery places over yours, are they? And the list could go on……..
And you, 11.26, are the racist.Racist against local people. The unfashionable, undeserving poor. Why should blow-ins who change country as they change their clothes always be chosen for Offertory etc and school activities over quiet, humble, non-demanding locals and their children? What is the reason? To make you feel self-righteous about yourself, that’s why. Why don’t you move your granny out of her house and give it to a “refugee”? You could feel so good about yourself. Sure Jesus wouldn’t mind. Your granny is the wrong colour and part of the undeserving, don’t ye know: The Gospel according to you.

Removing celibacy will solve nothing. Hundreds of cases of abuse are coming to light in the USA among the Baptist denomination – male and female victims of pastors, youth ministers, musical directors and other Church workers.
No celibacy to blame in the Baptist Church. Most pastors are married with families and still there are sexual predators preying on girls and boys, young men and young women among them.
The Baptists are strongly “anti-gay” and yet pastors have sexually abused teenage boys and young men as well as girls and women.
And because each Church is “independent” it’s proving impossible to “police”. Also the leadership are stubbornly refusing to implement Safeguarding policies that will stop the abuse. Known sexual predators are still pastoring churches with impunity.
At least the Catholic Church is now dealing with the problem.
Celibacy is not the problem. Sinful human nature is the problem. The old tried and tested remedies of prayer, self-control, self-discipline, avoiding occasions of sin, not giving in to self-indulgence and one’s baser instincts, are what are needed.

320 pastors, deacons, youth ministers, accused of sexual assault, rape, grooming boys and girls, sending indecent images, child pornography, sexual harassment and sexual assaults, upon adult men and women, who were seeking counselling from pastors, and so on.

Convicted and jailed offenders re-employed and re-appointed to churches, by the Southern Baptist Convention, as pastors and youth ministers, after their release from jail.

The leadership of the Southern Baptist Convention have failed to implement needed reforms to keep children and adults safe.

The effects upon victims are identical to the spiritual trauma described by those abused by Roman Catholic priests.

The moral corruption of clergy didn’t begin the day after Vatican II ended. This is a widespread contagion with roots going back to God only knows when and is not simply due human weakness or sin. Much of this corruption is and was willful criminality. Covering up the rape of a child is crime and not only sin.
I hope Martels forthcoming book shines light on the corruption in the Vatican and puts Greeley’s fictional ‘Cardinal Sins’ in halfpenny place.

In modernity child abuse was regular but discouraged behaviour. Combine that with a clerical mentality of entitlementin a church which is defensive & resistent to change and we can see that the problem is mentality. Vatican II is used by those clergy who seek to retain the culture of entitlement. You are right that it has nothing to do with a birth of moral corruption.
The fact that the behaviour was not encouraged in modernity, but known to be widespread means that everybody alive today has always known it to be wrong.
I am a great believer that Sean Brady should be prosecuted for aiding and abetting child abuse as he signed children into confidentiality contracts rather than reporting child sex abuse to the gardai.
Overall mentality is key. Nothing has changed today. I have even witness firsthand a current bishop using blackmail to cover up abusive behaviour rather than have it reviewed appropriately.

The Cardinals sniffing around young men are liberals eg the late Bernardin and Hume and the still living Mahoney, Cupich, Tobin, Uncle Ted, Mariadiaga, Danneels and at the front of the queue Coccopalmerio. I hope the new book in launched at one of Cocco’s infamous drugs and rent boys parties.
Closer to home, none could doubt the liberal credentials of Maynooth’s Ledwith, William Meaney, Gerard Watson and Ronan Drury, all of them gay to their fingertips.
This liberal notion that a prelate is gay if he uses the vestments they all did before the ineffective Council is crass. And the mocking claim that it’s theatrical and flamboyant and that equals gay is an unwittingly anti-gay way of thinking. Not all gays are like Julian Clary or Danny La Rue, you know.

Don’t forget Paglia – and quite a few others , the spelling of whose names I couldn’t be bothered to check.

Spellman was the model ( though not physique ) of Henry Morton Robinson‘s hugely popular novel, The Cardinal, also filmed. The character of Glennon is also clearly Cardinal O’Connell of Boston, another tyrant who gave Spelly a hard d time when he was just a priest.

Henry Morton Robinson’s The Cardinal was a favourite film/novel of the missing in action former Dean of Belfast, Dr Kennedy. He saw it as semi-biographical. Alas for Shooey, the fantasy didn’t translate into the reality.

As Archbishop Vigano revealed the appointments of Blase Cupich to Chicago and Joseph W. Tobin to Newark were orchestrated by McCarrick and Wuerl. Their names were not among those presented formally to the Nunciature in the U.S., and onto the pope through regular channels.

Says who?
On the contrary Wuerl was shown to have been told about McCarrick as Arch Vigano stated and Wuerl denied.

6:20; You also failed to mention Wuerl, who was ‘mentored’ by another shady pre- Vatican II Cardinal, who names escapes me.

You are certainly right to raise an eyebrow. You are referring to John Cardinal Wright, described by Gary Willis in NYRB as “a big fat baby” who loved been driven round Pittsburgh getting his ring kissed before very suddenly getting airlifted out to Rome – followed by his ever faithful Donald. No dear, not that Donald….

Like

Well, as a matter fact, the other Donald was, like his father, a close associate of Roy Cohn, a very nasty self-loathing gay homophobe and fixer, also unsurprisingly a friend too of Francis Cardinal Spellman and J. Edgar Hoover.

Vigano has been vindicated over Uncle Ted and his nephews “nighty-night baby” Tobin, “rabbit hole” Cupich, “I don’t remember” Wuerl and “McCarrick was gay, that’s news to me” Farrell.

5.43: Whiw, are you happy you’ve unburdened your faux anger at feeling “victimised” because a “stranger” has something you don’t have.? Your victimhood mentality is morally silly because you are blaming the “strangers” for your your impoverishment. It’s a bogus argument. The parents with special needs children and those on housing waiting lists whose needs are not being met is the responsibility of our elected parliament not the “stranger”. You arecright – there are lies, damned lies and statistics – and – then there’s YOUR lies. You and those of your mindset have the narrative all wrong and your bogus argument is inflamatory towards the immigrants in our country. Search out Focus Ireland, Simon Community, St. V. de Paul, Br. Kevin and you will quickly correct your falsehoods. If you are a Christian, Surely you accept the imperative of Jesus to welcome THE STRANGER and THE OUTCAST….or is that just a fairy story? I am not in denial. I work on the ground with the many marginalised. No one is excluded in my charity, personal or from my group…..

Are you a paid charity worker?
Have you skin in the game? Does your self worth rely on being a distributor of others’ largesse?
You are just too daft to bother arguing with as it’s late.
I’ll try and make it simple.
If a parent has 6 apples and 6 children and then 10 strangers come into the house and the mother gives the apples to the strangers, then the children get no apples. You might counter by saying cut up the apples, but you certainly can’t cut up a house.
It is certainly the responsibility of government to provide for the needs of its citizens FIRST, not to bypass its citizens to give to non-citizens.
There are a lot of Charities with skin in this game. Remember, many poor pensioners would never go looking for handouts. Gimmegrants do.

Who are the old prissy queens who have taken over the blog today and clearly obsessed with Cardinals and the American ones in pariticular. They sound like former Anglicans bitching among themselves with copious amounts of gin consumed no doubt. Obsessed about Burke, Spellman et al, thankfully I skipped through a lot of their garbage. Accusing each other of anger issues etc etc zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Europe is being flooded with immigrants, most of whom are economic immigrants. It is a socio/ economic/ political decision for political reasons
to further a globalist agenda.
One of Ireland’s elected representatives from the Green Party, sometime ago in Dáil Éireann, claimed Ireland needed the population to increase to 10 million in the next few years.
You tell me, how a population of 4.7 million can support such a flood of economic immigrants?
Where are they going to live? Who is going to finance them re social welfare? Who is going to feed them, cloth them? Where are their children going to be schooled? etc.
Do you realize that super mosques are planned for various parts of the country?
( I have nothing against Muslims), It’s part of an political agenda.
We cannot house 10,000
plus of our own citizens, men women and children, at
the moment.
Do you realize housing immigrants in hotels and hostels up and down the country is big business?
Do you realize the amount of criminality perpetrated by a significant number of immigrants? If you want to know go to the courts in big cities and see what’s going on re crime and immigrants. Read ‘The strange death of Europe’ by Douglas Murray for an insight into what’s going on in Europe politically re mass immigration. By the way….I worked in Focus Point and know a little bit about the plight of those out of home. And providing services for those out of home is another state sponsored big business carried out for various political reasons. Huge numbers of immigrants are NOT outcasts but are being cast into this country and other countries across Europe for political reasons. Our political masters are in the pockets of Europe and big bankers and this country is being sold out;
the abortion yes vote was engineered , another example
of political sell out!
Be wise and cunning but gentle as doves…. where did I read that!
