VATICAN OPENS ARCHIVES EARLY ON POPE PIUS X11.

Vatican opens archives on controversial WWII pope

Pope Francis wants Pius XII, accused of not condemning Holocaust, ‘correctly’ judged

Harriet Sherwood Religion correspondent The Guardian

Vatican archives on Pope Pius XII, the controversial wartime pontiff accused of failing to condemn the Holocaust, are to be opened next year after pressure from campaigners and historians.
Pope Francis announced the archives would be unsealed in March 2020, eight years ahead of schedule, saying the Roman Catholic church was “not afraid of history”.

Vatican hopes secret files exonerate ‘Hitler’s pope’

His predecessor had been “criticised, one can say, with some prejudice and exaggeration”, he added.
The role of Pius XII, a staunch anti-communist who became pope in March 1939, six months before war engulfed Europe, has long been questioned by historians.

According to a display in Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust memorial and museum, Pius “did not intervene” when Jews were rounded up and deported from Rome to Auschwitz.
His critics have also said he was enthusiastic about Adolf Hitler’s ascent to power and failed to stand up for priests who spoke out against the persecution of Jews and in many cases helped them and others escape being sent to Nazi concentration camps.
Pius’s public reticence over condemning the Holocaust was despite efforts by many in the church, as well as diplomats from allied countries, to persuade him to speak out.

Francis told staff at the Vatican archive on Monday: “The church isn’t afraid of history – on the contrary, it loves it, and would like to love it even more, like it loves God.”
Pius led the church during one of the “saddest and darkest periods of the 20th century”, the pope said. However, he added, he was confident that “serious and objective historical research will allow the evaluation [of Pius] in the correct light,” including “appropriate criticism”.
Pius’s papacy included “moments of grave difficulties, tormented decisions of human and Christian prudence, that to some could appear as reticent”. But they could be seen as attempts “to keep lit, in the darkest and cruellest periods, the flame of humanitarian initiatives, of hidden but active diplomacy”, said Francis.
In 2009, Francis’s predecessor, Pope Benedict, angered many Jews when he approved a decree recognising Pius’s “heroic virtues”, a first step toward sainthood.
Yad Vashem welcomed the Vatican’s decision to release the archives, saying it had been calling for years for the archives to be opened to “enable objective and open research as well as comprehensive discourse on issues relating to the conduct of the Vatican in particular, and the Catholic church in general, during the Holocaust”.

Iael Nidam-Orvieto, the director of Holocaust research at Yad Vashem, said it was known that Pius did not “publicly condemn the Nazis’ extermination of Jews in direct, clear and unambiguous terms”.
The Vatican may have operated a strategy of “public silence, with behind-the-scenes activity”, but available historical evidence had not confirmed that, she told Haaretz newspaper.
Rabbi David Rosen, of the American Jewish Committee, which has lobbied for more than 30 years for full access to the archives, said the pope’s decision was “enormously important to Catholic-Jewish relations”.
He added: “It is particularly important that experts from the leading Holocaust memorial institutes in Israel and the United States objectively evaluate as best as possible the historical record of that most terrible of times to acknowledge both the failures as well as the valiant efforts made during the Shoah [Holocaust].”
Naomi Di Segni, of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, said she hoped the material in the archives would “further clarify the position of the church” during the Holocaust.
Six million Jews died in the Holocaust, many after being rounded up and deported to Nazi death camps.

Its very good that Francis is openinh the Pius X11 archives.

The popular opinion, which I share, is that Pius dis not say or do enougb.

And at that time the RCC Good Friday ceremony contained a prayer for the “Perfidious Jews” that prayer was removed by Pope John XX111 as late as 1959.

There is no doubt that the hatred of Jews is a very old hatred that has affected our culture – especially the Catholic / Christian culture of Europe.

Catholics had a fear of Judaism, Communism and Free Masonry.

Sadly, my own father had antisemitic views based on watching a Jewish money lender charging my granny exorbitant interest rates.

I have meen to Israel on a number of occasions and loved it there. The first time I saw Jerusalem I got goose bumps. I could easily live there.

But I am not blind to the scandal of how Israel treats the Palestinians. The two country solution is the answer.

I am looking forward to the experts and historians using the Vatican archives to give us a professional and balanced judgement on Pius X11.

And I will now suspend my views pending the outcom of their investigations.

On 25th June 1942 the Daily Telegraph revealed “Germans Murder 700,000 Jews In Poland” in the “greatest massacre in the world’s history”. And what did Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin or for that matter De Valera say in defence of the Jews at this or any other time during the Holocaust? Nothing. For all kinds of reasons Pius XII was in an extraordinarily difficult position. He should be judged in context and not used as a scapegoat.

When Hitler died De Valera went to the German embassy in Dublin to sign the book of condolences.

Like

In his recent books on De Valera David Mc Cullagh points out there was no actual book of condolences in the German embassy. De Valera was friendly with the ambassador Hempel and was anxious not to humiliate him in defeat. The visit in Dev’s eyes was in part personal in part an expression of diplomatic protocol. And yes – it was spectacularly insensitive. He had previously called to the US embassy on the death of FDR. President Hyde also expressed condolences but got no publicity. The Portugese flew flags at half mast to mark Hitler’s death.

Pius knew that he wouldn’t stop Hitler’s genocidal antisemitism by publicly condemning him. On the contrary, he knew that Hitler would begin to persecute the Church. Remember this wss a period when words could kill. Some German workers (one for making a joke about Hitler which was overheard on the shopfloor) were beheaded for speaking against Hitler.
Pius helped as many Jews as he reasonably could. Some of his priests at the Vatican sacrificed their lives to this end.
Watch the 1983 film, The scarlet and the Black, for a reasonable understanding of Vatican activity at this time.

Don’t anyone believe that Pope Francis is taking a risk with Pius’ reputation by opening up archived material on him. Francis already knows that this stuff will exonerate Pius of all accusations of antisemitism.

Didn’t Pacelli before he was Pope draft Mitt Brenender Sorge, which unusally for an encyclical was in German and it was read out in churches, thereby infuriating the Nazis and prompting reprisals against the Church?
The thing is there was total war. The Allies were fighting at full pelt against the Axis. The Vatican has no army. Whatever Pius XII did or did not say would have made no difference to the war. Catholic Munich voted against Hitler.
The Hitler Pope myth was invented via the 1963 play The Deputy. Its German playwright should have been in sackcloth and ashes over what his country did instead of trying to put the blame on the Bishop of Rome.

On this Ash Wednesday let us seek the mercy of God. While we are right to express our disgust, anger and criticise the Church for its litany of abuse and moral failings, perhaps today we might each search our own hearts and allow the light of God’s mercy challenge our own shortcomings, sins and failings. We journey through Lent in the hope of true metanoia – a complete turning around, a refinding of our way back to God. Who of us is not in need of this refinding of God’s ways. “Have mercy in me God in your kindness; in your compassion.block out my offences: a pure heart create for me O God: put a steadfast spirit within me: give me again the joy of your help…”

Like

We don’t journey through Lent we observe it, it’s a liturgical ‘season’ not a physical location, it’s hallmarks are firstly fasting and abstinence so giving something up you can’t say doing more prayers is a form of penitence, and public and private penance.Metonia is 1970s Greek to replace Church Latin, there was a huge push to get us to say Eucharist instead of Mass at that time it didn’t work. In 1981 the Bishops of England and Wales tried a massive campaign to get us all to say the Our Father, Hail Mary etc in modern English, the CTS produced thousands of prayer books for schools to push it through, not much luck with that one.

The 1970’s fake jargon is always an attempt to sneak in something. It is in the main b.s. When I read ” being Church”, celebrating ” Eucharist” without even the article and all the other baloney phrases I switch off straight away as I know it’s a protestant who maybe even thinks he’s a Catholic. They have been religiously colonised. The Mass is, and always has been, a Sacrifice: THE Sacrifice.
Hearing some knobhead talking about “Moy” instead of THE Moy and thinking he’s all that – when he is in reality demonstrating his profound ignorance – has a similar ‘nail on blackboard’ effect on my whole system.
Uughh! Shudder!

Praying more IS giving up something…time.
And Greek preceded Latin as the language of Scripture. And before Greek there was Aramaic and Hebrew. So if you want to be ‘nearer’ God, start reading and praying in the true biblica languages, not in Vulgate Latin.
Oh! By the way, the idiot who translsted Greek scriptures into Vulgate Latin, dear old Jerome, made a few, very serious mistranslations, sending Christians in spiritually dire misdirection. For example, he mistranslated the Greek word, ‘metanoia’ as (in English) ‘do penance’ when, in fact, ‘metanoia’ meant no such thing. It actually means ‘repent’, which has nothing to so with inflicting hardship on oneself. So for generations, Roman Catholics have personally self-harmed, thinking this would bring them closer to God. God wants us to repent (to turn away from decisively) of those behaviours that harm ourselves and others.
You ‘traddies’ look upon dear old irascible Jerome as a hero when, in fact, he was an arse.
Your ‘traddiness’ is leading you up all sorts of intellectual blind alleys, isn’t it?

Translate metanoia as ‘do penance’? Jerome did no such thing. Your Wikipedia degree in biblical languages is a sham. Jerome would not translate a noun with a verb. Just as Hebrew and Aramaic have a preference for concrete imagery, Greek prefers abstract ideas. Latin, on the other hand has a predilection for forensic context. Translators are not mere labellers. They work in a linguistic context. Jerome leaves you in the halfpenny place every time, you puffed-up buffoon.

“Being Church” gets on my tits, as does “Presider” in place of “celebrant” at Mass.
In geriatric convents you often see a notice like this: “Eucharist: 10:00. Presider: Ryan Farcey”.

There was a similar campaign in my NI school, led by a really bitter divorced woman teaching RE in an all boys school. She never missed a chance to have a pope at JPII or the Vatican. She failed in her attempts to get us to do a modern Our Father or Hail Mary.

Presider is more accurate than celebrant. Everyone taking part in the Mass is a celebrant.

You talk enough ‘baloney’ of your own. Mass is not a sacrifice: it’s a commemoration of a sacrifce (‘Do this in memory of me.’) in the context of a meal (originally the Passover meal), traditionally, in Roman Catholicism, called ‘The Last Supper’.
Shudder at that (your OWN ignorance).😆

Like

10.51 Your dismissal, in a moment, of an argument with centuries of weight on either side is foolhardiness in the extreme. The teaching of the RCC is that the Mass is a sacrifice (the same sacrifice as that of the cross, though offered in a different manner.)

Jerome did. But you may disbelieve this historical FACT if you wish.

As you stated, ‘Latin has a predilection for forensic context’, which allowed Jerome the freedom to render ‘metanoia’ as ‘do penance for clarity’s sake.

I don’t think there is anyone in the Church hierarchy at the moment who would be interested in defending Pope Pius, he could be completely exonerated by some evidence, but that wouldn’t fit the current world view of that Pope , he’s Hitler’s Pope, concordat arranger, never spoke out, didn’t change the Good Friday prayer etc, all nice and neat and boxed off. It would have been better if Pope Paul vi had granted the access much earlier, what is clear is that Pope Pius xii was not seen as a villain at any point during or after the war, his public efforts for relief, his radio broadcasts are all in the public domain already. He was not liked by Hitler or Mussolini at all, he was formed in the old European style not the Fascist era, and certainly not the present day.

Is it credible that the RCC has had so many papal saints in the 20th century with Pius xii likely to be included?

I think you’re a bit harsh on Jerome. He was given the job of updating the earlier Latin version. He had to choose carefully because he had to deal with the traddies of his day who couldn’t bear too many verbal changes and, as I recall, would have been far more violent in reaction than today’s.

Think how difficult it was for a Ciceronian like Jerome to even look at the Latin versions. (Consider Cardinal Bembo who advised anyone who wished to have a pure Latin style to avoid the Breviarium and to read their Office in Greek.)

Jerome did issue an alternate version of the psalms more in keeping with the Hebrew verity, but that never really took off. It was not unlike the so-called Pian Psalter from the forties which the traddies often excoriate, but I always find its Latinity so much more understandable and more elegant than any form of the Vulgate.

Perhaps I have been harsh with Jerome.
Nevertheless, his mistranslations in the Vulgate have led to serious misunderstandings, in English, of absolutely key phrases in Greek versions of Scripture. ‘Repent’ and ‘do penance’ from the Greek ‘metanoeite’ are extremly poor translations; in fact, they are inaccurate.
The word ‘conversion’ is a more reliable alternative.

Like

7:40

Yes, those phrases are better translations than ‘repent’ or ‘do penance’, but I prefer ‘convert’ or ‘conversion’, because they are sematically more faithful to ‘metanoeite’.

Conversion not only means ‘personal change’, but ‘persuasion to such change’. In other words, to permit onself to be transformed by grace. This, after all, is at the heart of salvation.

So congratulations! You’ve just told someone not to love…in God’s name, of course.😆

Readers may get the impression from Frank and the boys in Rome that this ‘opening of the archives’ is to be treated as an act of transparency, I would be extremely cautious when Rome does something as dramatic as this. I suspect documents have been removed and or redacted. However if it takes the public eye off the paedophile criminality now engulfing Imperial HQ then that can only be seen as to its advantage
As we are on the subject of Pius XII held up by the reactionaries as a kind of ‘poster boy’ for Traditionalism I invite readers to take time to check this link I supply
https://books.google.com.au/books?id=fowNAwAAQBAJ&pg=PR193&dq=cardinal+caccia+dominioni&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjuzNHB4fPgAhVk73MBHZ6YD2sQ6AEIQjAE#v=onepage&q=cardinal%20caccia%20dominioni&f=false
The Proto Cardinal Deacon Camilio Cardinal Caccia-Dominioni who announced the election of and crowned Pius XII in 1939 was notorious as an active and enthusiastic paedophile. That information most certainly did not come from the Vatican who knew only too well what this Prince of the Church was doing. The data was revealed by Rome’s Fascist police.
Now with Cardinal Barbarin’s conviction in France what more are we to expect?
