CHURCH KNEW PELL WAS AT THE CENTRE OF A DECADES OLD LURID SEX SCANDALS

By Barney Zwartz
March 7, 2019 — 11.55am

The claims were lurid and unverified so Helen Last, the counsellor hired by the Catholic Church in Melbourne to assist victims of clerical abuse, agonised before reporting them to her superiors.
It was 1996 and the newly appointed archbishop, George Pell, had just set up the Melbourne Response to handle the rising numbers of sex abuse claims received by the archdiocese.
An ex-seminarian known as ‘‘Joe’’ came forward alleging that Pell and several other priests had, 10 to 15 years earlier, been having sex with Mannix College trainee clerics at ‘‘parties … involving young men’’.
Joe was not a strong witness. He wanted $20,000 for compromising photographs that appeared to be of Pell and others engaged in sexual acts, but could not produce the negatives. Despite this, Ms Last felt she could not dismiss Joe’s allegations.Add to shortlist
She reported the claims to her superior and also to the vicar-general, Monsignor Gerald Cudmore (who died in 2007).
‘‘He was shocked, and said, ‘We have to do something,’ ’’ she said.
Ms Last says she developed suspicions about Pell very early during her work with the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
She heard many stories from victims of clergy sexual abuse in different parishes, especially that Pell knew what was happening and was protecting priests who were abusing children.
‘‘It was alleged to me early that Pell was among a group of offenders from Ballarat to Melbourne. They were part of the Ballarat organised clerical offending, which extended down to Laverton and around Melbourne.’’
While the credibility of the claims made by ‘‘Joe’’ were never substantiated, a detailed memo of the ex-seminarian’s allegations, seen by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, demonstrates that the church was aware of complaints about Pell’s character dating back more than 20 years.

Helen Last says she had suspicions about George Pell for years.
In light of Pell’s conviction for sexual abuse of two choirboys in 1996, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald believe there is public interest in revealing the trail of complaints that have dogged the cardinal’s career.
If the ex-seminarian’s claims are included, there are nine known allegations about sexual misconduct against Pell, ranging from exposure to assault, although only two – his sexual abuse of the choirboys – have been upheld by a court.
Rumours have surrounded the cardinal, especially among survivors of abuse and their advocates, for many years. Some of the allegations might seem preposterous at first, but the same argument was made by some about the choirboy’s claim that he and another boy were assaulted more than 20 years ago. This makes the other allegations more relevant.
Ms Last’s contract was terminated in May 1997 as a result, she claims, of her defying explicit instructions from archbishop Pell and then vicar-general Denis Hart to stay away from the Doveton parish, which suffered six paedophiles in succession as parish priest or assistant priest.Victorian police in Rome on October 19, 2016. This is an excerpt of the 42-minute interview.
One Doveton priest was the deranged Peter Searson, who wandered the Catholic school in military clothing, sometimes carried a gun, stabbed a bird with a screwdriver and tortured a cat. He was also molesting many children.
A teacher at the time, Carmel Rafferty – whose attempts at whistleblowing ended her career in Catholic education – said a delegation went to Pell, Searson’s bishop, to share their concerns, but these were dismissed. Pell told the royal commission that this was because he was deceived by archbishop Frank Little and the education office.
After she was sacked and the pastoral response office closed, Ms Last set up In Good Faith and Associates to support survivors. She also set up the Melbourne Victims’ Collective, which has 120 members who complain they were traumatised by the Melbourne Response.
‘‘I believe Pell set up the Melbourne Response partly to protect himself. I believed that from the beginning … He had no understanding of victim care,’’ she says
Ms Last believes the Melbourne Response files should be subpoenaed and the decision in each case examined.
In 2015 she submitted her correspondence with the church over the ‘‘Joe’’ memo to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
It is believed that ‘‘Joe’’ has not pursued the matter. The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald have been unable to contact him.
The new Archbishop of Melbourne, Peter A. Comensoli, says he does not know of any other historical accusations from Pell’s time in Melbourne, apart from those that had already been before the court.
‘‘No. Only the Ballarat one and the trial’s not going ahead. There’s nothing in his files, and our files stop with when he finished up here.’’
However, correspondence seen by this masthead shows the independent commissioner, Peter O’Callaghan, QC, investigated the seminary allegations, asking Ms Last to send him ‘‘the remainder of your files … as quickly as possible’’.
Approached last week, Mr O’Callaghan said that because the matter of Pell remains before the courts, ‘‘I must not and will not make any comments on the matters you raised’’.
Pell, who is to be sentenced next week, maintains his innocence of all claims and will appeal his conviction of sexually assaulting the two choirboys at a hearing set down for June 5 and 6.
One of the three men who have claimed Pell touched them improperly in Ballarat swimming pools in the 1970s intends to sue the cardinal for damages, and the other two are expected to give evidence in that case.
The ‘‘swimming pool’’ trial did not go ahead after the judge ruled certain evidence was inadmissible.
Then there is the allegation that Pell fondled a boy at a camp at Phillip Island in 1961. In his 2002 investigation on behalf of the Sydney archdiocese, retired Supreme Court judge Alec Southwell found both the boy, Phil Scott, and Pell to be credible witnesses. He also found the complaint could not be established.
In 2016 Torquay resident Les Tyack went public with allegations he submitted to the royal commission and to the police that he saw Pell expose himself for many minutes to three boys at the local surf lifesaving club in the 1980s.

In the pre-trial hearing for the second Pell trial, which was eventually abandoned, the prosecutors outlined claims from a Victorian man who told police that in 1975 or 1976, when he was 10, he slipped off Pell’s shoulders while playing in a lake near Swan Hill and made accidental contact with the priest’s erect penis. Pell was alleged to have told the boy: ‘‘Don’t worry, it’s only natural.’’
The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald have been told other allegations have been made to the royal commission, but the commission will not release its own findings about Pell until the appeal against his conviction has been heard.
Pell is due to be sentenced on Wednesday, March 13, and is now on remand.
The current Melbourne Response independent commissioner, Jeff Gleeson QC, was not available for comment.
The Catholic Church declined to comment.

PAT SAYS:

It is now emerging that Pell was like O’Brien and McCarrick – and had a long history of having sex with seminarians, priests and lay men.

And Like McCarrick – but unlike O’Brien – he also engaged in sex with minors.

It is very rare for a man or a cleric to begin their sexual abuse activity in later life.

Normally there is a long history.

And now with Pell it seems that he abused boys as a priest in Ballarat and later in Melbourne – but also had a sexually active life with seminarians and priests over many decades.

And high ranking clerics in Australia and Rome knew all about his sexual predatorship and turned a blind eye and allowed him to climb up the church and to become Number 3.

Any man with a long history like that would be well able to make sure the coast was clear in the sacristy, have his member out and into the choir boys mouths with the greatest of efficiency and skill.

He was a practised expert and it would have been all over before the poor boys realised it.

Let those who still defend Pell know that they are defending a man who made it his business to pounce on children; seminarians and priests – and then deny everything that happened in his life.

But of course there are still blind, brainwashed RCs who choose to deny it all.

How would they feel if they themselves or their sons and nephews were part of Pell’s sea of victims?

I have never, as an adult, played with children I don’t know in pools or lakes. In fact, I have never played with any children in water apart from my own kids. What was this man doing playing with strangers’ children on all these occasions? Sounds like a pattern of opportunism. Creepy.

Quite right. Even back then men knew that other people’s children were none of their business and stayed well clear especially in the context you describe.

Apparently, the cardinal… sorry, the nonce is confined in a solitary cell to protect him from other prisoners, who want to batter the nonce senseless. Also, some say he’ll get 50 years, others 12 months. Amy and Elsie may be arranging a sweepstake.

It should be clearly stated that I as a gay man (and all the gay men I know) are absolutely disgusted and repulsed by any abuse of minors and those who do that deserve many years in prison and I don’t care if they get attacked by other prisoners because of what they did.
All the gay men I know are like everybody else in condemning it and think that no child or adolescent should have their life wrecked.
Can people please stop blaming gay men for the wrongdoings of a minority of priests who by their own rules massively disobey the verse about “suffer the little children”?

Like

But generally, it is priests, bishops and cardinals, who are ALL gay themselves, that are responsible for the blame game. Only recently we had that great fat fruit fly, Cardinal Burke aka Queen of Sheba, denouncing they gays.

You are mischief-making. You are trying to blame a sexual orientation for the crimes of child-sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests instead of the individual Christ-betrayers themselves.
I presume that you are heterosexual. Many heterosexual men abuse little girls. Are you, then, as a heterosexual man an abuser (or potential abuser) of little girls simply because you, also, are heterosexual?
Be careful, you short-sighted fool! The standard by which you are judging, and condemning, gay men is the very standard by which YOU shall be judged and condemned. 😆

The percentages speak for themselves. Homosexuality and abuse of boys and teenage boys much much higher. In fact many many boys led into the homosexual lifestyle initially by much older men. You just don’t want to face it.
The Man and Boy Love crowd are still very much around, they are just cute enough not to agitate openly at present.

Like

There are many, many more cases of sexual abuse of children and adolescents by heterosexual men, much (if not most) of it statistically unavailable, because this abuse is easier to conceal through ties of family loyalty. Thus a greater opportunity for omėrta exists within these highly localised environments than it does in Church circles.

Your obvious homophobia is noted, because your ill-informed, highly prejudiced, and dangerous post is trying to conflate homosexuality with paedophilia and/or ephebophilia, while promoting the ‘junk’ science that boys can be turned gay by acts of sexual abuse by other males.

People are born with an innate sexual orientation, to which they awaken as they age, just as they awaken to other propensities, like physical strength, intelligence, artistry, athleticism, etc. In other words, ‘these characteristics become apparent as people grow’, characteristics that were not obvious when they were very young. Just as no one can be made physically very strong if they are not innately capacitated to be so, or highly intelligent if they lack innate cognitive and memory function, or distinquishly athletic if they do not possess innate capacity to be so, no one can be ‘turned gay’ if he or she lacks such an innate propensity.

You missed my point. The sexual abuse of children cannot be blamed on a sexual orientation. Homosexual men are no more natural sexual predators of children than are heterosexual men. If you believe otherwise, then you are implicitly accepting the argument that sexual orientation itself is the fundamental locus of sexual abuse of children. Which, in turn, means that every heterosexual man, including you, is an innately disposed paedophile.

If all that’s revealed in this article is true, then The Church is really in a very dark place, darker than we can envisage. From the very top to the lowest level of Church personnel there is a legacy of abuse, cover up, deceit, lack of accountability and criminal behaviour in relation to abuse of minors and vulnerable people. I am thrown into a deep despair. Despite my personal efforts to ensure the best Child safeguarding practices and having a constant, vigilant eye for potential abuse and expressing my outrage and abhorrence, it all seems irrelevant in the evolving revelations. This First Sunday of Lent poses a serious challenge for me as I face parishioners. I will continue my work as faithfully and caringly as possible. I will continue to express my moral outrage but what can the words of a 78 year old priest achieve? I see all my commitment and work over the years crumble into nothingness and my sense of relevance decrease day by day. We are in frightening territory and very uncertain times as the flow of revelations continue. I will remember all the victims/survivors today.

You need to do the old fashioned thing of prayer and sacrifice, especially the Rosary. This is what Our Lady pleaded for at Fatima, Garabandal and Akita. And you need to tell your parishioners to do likewise. Don’t be afraid of being thought a fuddy duddy.
It was OurBlessed Mother who told us that the priests and cardinals were on the road to hell and leading many souls with them, but very few paid attention. Now the truth of what she told us is blatantly before our eyes, but some STILL want to ignore her words.
Nothing now but Divine Intervention will clean this mess up. We have been told what is required of us, but we think it’s too simplistic and old fashioned to do. We are fools.

Amen 11:27.
If there is any Catholic reading this blog who says five decades of the Rosary each day, please consider saying the full Rosary inclusive of all the 20 mysteries.
The Rosary is the most powerful prayer that the Laity can pray.
The Rosary is THE SOLUTION for these most perilous and dark times for the Church.
Our Blessed Lady has been commissioned by God to crust satan’s head. And the Rosary is her weapon of choice.

You’ve already achieved something with this post, namely hope for survivors of abuse that clergy inside the institution are realising the true situation. You are far from the clergy who post on here that we should focus on the good, abuse happens everywhere, etc. I personally have known for 25 years that the RC church actively promotes abusers. I am still waiting for my own abusers downfall, but I am certain it is coming.
Thank you again, your reaction to this news gives some hope that denial is not universal.

Are you really that stupid? Where does it infer in the post that not saying the Rosary causes child abuse? Dimwit. Learn to read more slowly at a pace you can comprehend. Until you do stfu yourself.
This ” nonsensical pious claptrap” is what Our Blessed Mother asked for. Padre Pio called his Rosary his “weapon.” Our job in this present time is to meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary daily, adding the specific prayers given at Fatima and Garabandal which in essence are prayers for the conversion of those far from God and mercy for those who especially need it. We are to “live good lives” and make small sacrifices in our daily lives in reparation for the sins of others. We are to spend time before the Blessed Sacrament and to pray for priests and cardinals who “are on the way to hell and dragging many souls with them.”
If every Catholic did that it wouldn’t be long until these buggers were recognised for what they were and not tolerated.
As Our Lord said there are some demons which “can only be driven out by prayer and fasting.”
I’m happy to take Our Mother at her word.
From your unbelieving standpoint why don’t you experiment. You have nothing to lose but your time.

12:33: The prescription in the Scriptures for the fight against evil is prayer and sacrifice. It is all over both the Old & New Testaments.

Time after time in Church approved apparitions, Our Lady has also requested prayer, in the form of the Rosary – which is a prayer and meditation based on the New Testament – and sacrifice for the conversion and salvation of sinners.

There is no easy way out of this black hole except by prayer and penance.

This is God’s way and God does not change.

Like

@12:33, If you are a priest you are in the wrong game!

The problem with this modernistic infiltrated church is that many priests, bishops and cardinals have forgotten that they are meant to be men of intense prayer and sacrifice. It is because of a lack of holy priests that evil is currently holding sway in the Church and society.

If you don’t agree with the above, well then you should consider being a social worker or something of that sort.

While your post contains good points, it expresses something which is fundamental to the moral and criminal crisis which has brought the Church to the ‘very dark’ place you dread; and this ‘something’ is clericalism.
Along with your age (78yrs), I note the clericalist tendencies you clearly still embrace: you speak of hierarchy (‘From the very top to the lowest level of Church personnel’), and you suggest that you are not a leader in your parish, but indeed the sole leader and guide of your congregation.
This model of church is the incubator in which the sexual tendencies of some of your fellow priests flourished because it protected these men, offering them moral and legal impunity.
This model is the antithesis of what Jesus instructed his disciples to become: servants of one another.
Until you learn to see ALL of your congregation as equal co-workers for Christ and begin, TRULY, to practise this humbly and learningly, you can lament the ongoing crisis as deeply and as publicly as makes you content, but you wil continue to be part of the fundamental cause of arguably the most corrosive period in Church history.

7:10 courageous social action does not spring from prayer and sacrifice, but from love. Atheists do not pray, but they can love. I have met some courageous and loving atheists.

@12:22 there are far too many people now bearing open witness against Pell for me to feel comfortable in defending him anymore.

I do so hope that it is not the case that Pell has a long history of questionable behaviour, even criminal behaviour, which was known about by his confreres and superiors, and yet he was advanced over decades. I had thought that I would give him the benefit of the doubt and await the outcome of his appeal, given the seeming shortcomings I have been reading about in his original trial. But, if there is the ‘McCarrick’ pattern emerging in respect of Pell, then I will be truly shocked. Again. If the alarm bells were ringing decades ago, why, oh why, was Pell not tackled then rather than being protected ? I know people will claim that these were probably just tittle tattle, and nothing was substantiated, but we do have to rely on our instincts and when you smell something bad, you smell something bad. If all this is true, then it is unforgivable that those around him did not act.

So, I will await the final outcome before I make my final judgement, but things are not looking good for Pell. And, if it does transpire as I have described it above, then I will be on the war path. I’ve had enough of protection of the powerful and privileged who live hypocrisy and lies – the Conry’s, the McCarricks, the O’Briens, and now it seems the Pells. All known about, all protected. For what ? For whom ? And at what cost ?

On a sidenote (though not irrelevant to today’s blog), Pope Francis (according to Crux) has likened the ‘martyrdom’ of nine seminarians during the Spanish Civil War to current persecution of Christians globally, while the world ‘too often looks away’.
Yes, the world, reprehensibly, does too often look away, just as the institutional Roman Catholic Church too often looked away from, er, men like the odious Pell; and not just looked away, but promoted them to positions of greater ecclesial prominence and power (and, therefore, to greater opportunity to molest and abuse the innocent).
SHAME ON YOU!
Interestingly, Francis last year said that the killing of the nine seminarians was was done ‘in odium fidei’ (‘in hatred of the faith’). No, it wasn’t: it was done in justifiable hatred of the behaviour of the institutional Church in Spain, which stood, for social privilege, side by side with the secularly powerful (the industrialists and capitalists) , who were, along with the Church, oppressing and exploiting the poor. (And when I say ‘poor’, I mean ‘the absolutely, bloody wretched’).
Even now, in the deepening darkness of sexual abuse by Roman Catholic Christ-betrayers, that old chestnut (‘in odium fidei’, or its equivalents) is brought out of ecclesial idiom to defend the institutional Church against justifiable and necessary criticism, and to demonise those who seek to bring its sins and criminality to account. Fancis did precisely this just recently, by trying to associate with Satan those who make allegations of child-sexual abuse by priests. He did it, too, with the Chilean abuse survivors, even though he had evidence to the contrary; but the deceitful fool, amazingly, was rumbled by one of his own, O’Malley.
Francis, and his advisors, are not so much historians as propagandists: ‘liars’, in another word.
Should we be surprised that these men seek to present moral darkness as light?😕

I amn’t trying to ‘ win you over to say the rosary’ I am informing you of Our Lady’s words. It is up to you to accept or reject them; Jesus said to shake the dust off and move on.
When I pray in my Rosary for ” those who do not believe, do not love, do not adore and do not hope in” Almighty God, that includes you.
To deny myself a biscuit asking God to use my self-denial in some way to help someone struggling to deny themselves a drink etc is something I am committed to try to do. To pray the daily Rosary, as asked by Our Lady, to help the communion of saints, the world, is a beautiful thing. Contemplatives spend their lives praying for just that. We will never know on this earth just what we owe to someone else’s prayers.

Believe me, Bp Pat, I’ve nothing against the former trainee pulpit poof, but maybe we could be allowed a few Magna-Carta-Free-Days a week — even one-day-a-week would be wonderful. It’s in your gift as always, Bishop.

I hate some of Magna’ s contributions. As a Cleric it’s good to have some healthy blunt and brutal criticism. I find it uncomfortable but I accept and share his/her criticisms. Don’t go hard on me.

There was a hotel in Limavady in Co Londonderry which had its own oratory though the rest of it was a bit clatty and it was no patch on the Radisson Roe. Are we referring to the same place?

That’s jogged my memory. Old toots O’ Brien from Magherafelt. Is it the same one? Does his family still have the chemist shop? He loved the women did old Toots. I know it’s rare these days. Is there something in the water about priests who served in this backwater? I hope Donal McKeown needs alerted.
