“A Catholic cleric wanted by police over a string of alleged child sex crimes has returned from his Spanish bolthole, The Sunday World can reveal.

Fr. John Murray (78) a parish priest in the Diocese of Down and Connor – flew into Dublin from Tenerife on Thursday evening.

It is understood he completed the rest of the journey north to Belfast by road.

Detectives from the PSNI Care Unit are keen to speak with concerning three separate complaints of child sex abuse relating to his time as curate in St. Matthew’s Parish in the Short Strand district of Belfast.

Three years ago Fr. Murray was forced to step down from his post as parish priest of St. Mary’s, Rasharkin, following a complaint of sexual abuse by a middle aged mother of three grown up children.

Since then two other female complaints have come forward with similar allegations. 

All of the cases are historic and relate to Murray’s time in the east Belfast parish.

A spokesman from the church later confirmed the matter had also been referred to the appropriate authorities and that an investigation was pending.

Following the personal intervention by Bishop Noel Treanor Fr. Murray moved out of the Parochial House in Rasharkin and briefly stayed at a Catholic Church-owned care home at Newcastle Co. Down.

But before the police had an opportunity to quiz him about the allegations he upped sticks and fled to the Canary Islands where he stayed until a few days ago.

In response to police pressure Fr Murray’s solicitor speaking on his behalf claimed that on the advice of a medical expert at a clinic he attended in Spain Fr Murray was deemed too ill to travel.

The Sunday World investigations revealed that Fr Murray was in fact living in considerable luxury at an upmarket resort in the North of Tenerife where he played golf most days.

Last September we were told that the veteran priest was making arrangements to return to Belfast to face police questions and that he expected in the city by early November.But the plans fell through without any proper explanation.

Yesterday. Father Murray’s solicitor Denis Maloney of Donnelly and Wall in Belfast confirmed his client was back on Northern Irish soil for the first time in nearly three years. 

“Fr Murray arrived back on Thursday night. He is the company of his family who are acting as his carers”, he said.

“Father Murray will now undergo a thorough medical examination. When that is complete he will be happy to make himself available for questioning to the appropriate authorities”.

Last night, Sinead Gorman, one of the complainants – who waived her right to anonymity in an effort to move the case forward – said she was glad to see movement in the case.

Yesterday, head of PSNI Public Protection Branch, Chief Superintendent Paula Hillman said: “Detectives are continuing to investigate allegations of historical sexual abuse made against a member of the clergy in east Belfast”.

On Saturday, in an unexpected development, Father Murray was arrested and detained at Musgrave Street police station in Belfast.

He is expected to be before the courts today.

Now that Father Murray has appeared before the court the matter becomes sub-judice – “under judicial consideration and prohibited from discussion elsewhere”.

That means, that neither I or comment makers can comment about the case.

I actually took the trouble to listen to about 25 mins of the pseudo-theological, pre-Vatican 1, rigid theological humbug this priest was speaking.
Tell me: what was scholarly about his contribution? The very least a scholar can do (must do, in fact) is offer evidence (CREDIBLE evidence) to substantiate his arguments. I heard nothing, not a sausage, during the time I listened that even remotely backed up anything this priest said. And the radio presenter was as impartial (and as crtical in his reaction) as ‘Pravda’ during the carefree, liberal times of the Soviet Union.
It is the kind of dogmatism, of various kinds, this priest wants to revive that is at the heart of the crisis in the Church today. And it is clericalism by another name.
This is the cry of the desperate, looking for quick fixes by turning back the clock on Church governance, canon law, liturgy, moral doctrine…even, in large part, the teachings of an ecumenical council, The Second Vatican Council.
Don’t you braindead fools understand that it is from this kind of ecclesial past that the present turmoil emerged?

Now let proper justice take its course. And pray for all victims/survivors. Let’s not sit smugly behind laptops analysing the wrongs of others. Perhaps today we should look within and see our own faults, sins and need of God’s grace. Prayer, fasting and sacrifice are the essentials for Lent so that we become “empty” enough to make greater room for God in our hearts.

I respect that fact that we must be careful in what we say and write now that the matter is in the hands of the PSNI. Fr Murray may have been arrested, perhaps even charged, but whether the matter will go to court will depend on the Prosecutor’s advice as to whether there is a realistic prospect of conviction, and whether it is in the public interest to prosecute. So, there are still a number of steps to go before Fr Murray would appear in court. Even if these cases do not go to court, the Church will then need to hold its own inquiry in to these accusations. The Church’s threshold for upholding these accusations is lower than in the secular courts, so even if not prosecuted, Fr Murray may well find that he is deemed responsible for his behaviour and the subject of ecclesiastical censure.

Just on the secular courts – Fr Murray is an old man now. However, I am aware of a case not so long ago where a man who was 101 was sent to prison for 7 years in the UK for historical crimes. Age is no guarantee of staying out of prison if the courts find you guilty.

09:40. Take some time to read that article carefully rather than just speed reading the title. If you did so you would see that there are multiple channels through which a priest can be sanctioned, and multiple sanctions that can be applied. Dismissal from the priestly state / laicisation is only one, perhaps the most serious. In every case many factors are taken in to account, and I would like to suggest to you one that might be the reason why every priest who is guilty of abusing children is not automatically kicked out of the priesthood. Before I get to that, do remember also that there is a wide spectrum of offences which come under the catch all title of abuse of children, everything from the over affectionate embrace that might be seen as something questionable to full blown abuse such as rape. Any legal or canonical system has to distinguish between these and apply law and sanction appropriately, and that means proportionately. So not every priest who has fallen under the wide banner of abusive behaviour is worthy of being punished with the most stringent sanction such as laicisation.

So, the one thing I would like you to consider is this. Ejecting somebody who has a history of transgression in the area of abuse would mean that person is let loose with no supervision or oversight, and we know from experience that when that happens the likelihood of reoffending is very high, not just in abuse cases but in any criminal behaviour. So, is it not sensible to keep that person in some category within the supervision and oversight of the Church – in a life of prayer and penance – rather then just washing our hands of them ? Doing so is not going easy on them, it is rather taking on a responsibility which the Church should take on in order to ensure that reoffending is unlikely.

We do not always know the facts and considerations behind every case that we hear about. They can be many and varied in seriousness, scope and damage done. It is for the courts, both secular and canonical, to weigh up the guilt and appropriate sanction. That judgement may not always accord with a “flog em, hang em” attitude that is lacking in nuance and proportion because it has not taken in to consideration all the facts, and which does not do real justice in the end, either to victim or perpetrator.

Is that still ‘nonsense’ to you, 0940 ? If so, take some time to consider it before a knee-jerk reaction. You know you owe it to yourself !

Your post is an evasion of the commentor’s criticism.
The fact that there is an ascending scale of sanctions available to a canonical court is neither here nor there. What IS relevant is that Pope Francis has publicly declared zero-tolerance towards priests found guilty by such a court. Reasonable interpretation of this statement is that offending priests will be laicised, and this widespread public perception has never been denied by Pope Francis. To allow an offending priest not only to remain a cleric, but to engage in limited public ministry is nothing if not tolerance of such men. I’m surprised that you cannot see this. Then again, perhaps you don’t wish to.
Pope Francis has engaged in mental reservation before the world on this matter. A rather stupid thing to do, since mental reservation has exactly the same effect on others that outright lying does: it erodes trust. Considering that trust in the institutional Church is now almost universally denuded, it is hardly wise to test public patience further by engaging in such a, er, Jesuitical tactic. But then, Francis is not the wisest of men, is he? Nor the world’s most machiavellian diplomat (though, I confess, he does try)? Because he keeps being rumbled.😆

However I am pleased that in this case victims will now be heard in open court, having been denied their right to do so by the abscondence for three years by their alleged perpetrator. Victims of abuse and seeking justice for them should always be our priority. However it is difficult for victims to achieve justice when their accused abscond and are protected by a so called Christian organisation which is more interested in self preservation. I am pleased that the justice denied to victims will now take its course. Call it being smug if you will. I couldn’t care less

If they are found guilty by a secular court then they should face the sanction of that court and be automatically expelled from their clerical duties. The sooner that you realise that the church does not run countries the better. Commit them to a life of prayer under the supervision of the church? Are you mental? It was under the supervision of the church that they committed their crimes. Lock them up in jail where they belong and they can pray all they want

I thought the point he was making was that in cases where the Law can’t convict because the burden of proof doesn’t allow, then the Church should still send him somewhere he could do no harm.
The problem is, they never DO send them to an enclosed order. Enclosed should mean enclosed.

All these pseudo priests who have abused any innocent child or vulnerable person have been protected and enabled for far too long under the church’s umbrella. They feel very comfortable within the church precisely because it has enabled, perpetuated and added longevity to their ‘careers’ of abuse.
These devious scumbags have taken advantage of the fact that the only ‘oversight’ they had to worry about was some dozy, doddery or spineless bishop whom they ran rings around with their wormtongue lies.
Turn them out of the church and allow them feel the full force of the secular law courts.
Those unjust statutes of limitations have to be abrogated in the US.
It must be more than galling for McCarrick’s victims to see him enjoying a nice cosy retirement living off a handsomely church funded pension, paid for by whom? You got it…the laity!

The sanction is window dressing by the Vatican to give to the world the impression that it takes the criminal conduct of these clerics with the utmost gravity and urgency. But it all is a colossal sham, a deceit: canonical devices by a medievally disposed church hierarchy that were controversial even in the Middle Ages. (It is why that arrogant bastardo and so-called saint, Thomas Beckit, was put to the sword in Canterbury Cathedral.)😆

There are two ways of understanding this, of which the more benign is that Pope Francis is trying to encourage a return to God by a man so deeply mired (allegedly) in sexual and administrative scandal. The other is that Francis, despite all the red flags raised against this man, is determined to show the world that he is standing by a brother bishop, just as he stood by Bishop Juan Carras of Chile.

I cannot imagine Vincent Nicholls having much time for Eamon Martin; he is pretty contemptuous of his own brother bishops in E & W, though with good reason it has to be said. Even when still at Birmingham he was very much the man to go to for the press, since CMOC was such a hopeless waffler. Abusing children whilst pretending to be a Christian leader is an act of blasphemy agai st God himself. These morally corrupt creatures need dealt with by the law of the land not by their church which facilitated and covered up their abuse in the first place. Brady is still carrying out duties. He has basically been let off the hook. Amy doesn’t enjoy being seen in his company and avoids him like the plague. We can’t have Amys reputation damaged after all. Brady is not alone in Ireland at covering up abuse.

9:55pm. I’m sorry but Brady, regardless of what he believed or not, is guilty of covering up abuse of minors. Abuse of a minor is a crime in all civilised jurisdictions. Brady was legally obliged to bring those crimes he was aware of to the civil authorities. He did not and had children undertake not to either. This is cover up regardless of what his clerical masters thought. They, thank God, do not run society. Plain and simple he covered up abuse to protect the interests of his church and what’s more, the Roman Catholic Church of Christ betrayers are still at the same thing? Of course, there was always a moral obligation, which should have meant more to a man like Brady.
