BLOGGING FROM ROME – MARCH 20 – 27TH

By Anthony J. Raiola and Michelle Simpson Tuegel
For decades, the Catholic Church has turned a blind eye to the child predators in its ranks and refused to be held accountable for the thousands of lives it ruined.
Yet it took less than two days for the Brooklyn Diocese to respond to a joke on Saturday Night Live that compared the Catholic Church to R. Kelly.
There is no greater evidence that the Church refuses to take its child abuse problem seriously. It is clear the priorities lie in feigning outrage, not actually changing the culture of secrecy and abuse that has become the tenet of the modern Catholic Church.
Take, for example, the recent Vatican conference on sexual abuse of minors that was portrayed by many as a positive step forward by the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, the conference failed to establish any real solutions or tangible outcomes for survivors of clergy abuse. The Church has knowingly allowed abuse against minors to go on for decades, working hard to keep the abuse quiet and rotating sexual predators around different communities. Despite a contrite tone, Pope Francis proposed no concrete solutions to deal with the scourge of clergy abuse and failed to promise a zero-tolerance approach from the Church.
Survivors of clergy abuse in New York and beyond deserve more. It is time for Catholic bishops in New York state to make real reforms rather than empty promises, and do what the participants of the Vatican conference refused to do — focus on the survivors and enact concrete changes so that this abuse never happens again.
For example, New York bishops must convene a statewide summit and actually listen to the voices of survivors, not the clergy and institution that allowed this corruption to happen. By failing to prioritize the needs of survivors, the Church is once again choosing its leadership over the people it has failed to protect for decades.
The Church must also implement a zero-tolerance policy towards abusive clergy members and the priests and bishops who protect them, resulting in automatic dismissal from the clerical state. In addition, candidates for the priesthood should have to undergo more rigorous screening to help prevent such abuse from occurring in the first place.
Finally, the Vatican must reveal everything it knows about the destruction of files that could have prevented some abuse from occurring. The Church has proven that it cannot be trusted to do the right thing, so it must be forced to be entirely transparent and provide answers to questions survivors have struggled with for decades: What did the Church know about clergy abuse and when? And why didn’t it do more to stop it?
Part of ending the culture of covering up is holding abusive priests, the individuals who protected them, and the Church accountable in court. Despite resistance from the likes of Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Child Victims Act was recently signed into law, creating more opportunity for survivors to seek justice and get answers. The new law gives survivors of sexual abuse more time to seek criminal or civil charges against their abusers and creates a one-year window for survivors to file lawsuits that were previously barred by the statute of limitations. It helps ensure that from now on, survivors of sexual abuse in New York will not be silenced.
PAT SAYS
Is it not amazing that the US bishops have covered up abuse for 50 + years but react in 24 hours to their church being mocked and ridiculed?
They are so protective of their “reputation” but in reality their reputation is already zilch!
They have more concern for their so called “good name” than the wrecked lives and peace of mind of many thousands of innocent children.
These are rats that need the fire of exposure and publicity focused upon them.
The centuries of denial and corruption are coming home to roost.
There is a God in Heaven!

What was the point of that big summit in the Vatican? It achieved nothing and nothing changed.
As for zero tolerance, Cardinal Barbarin of Lyon said Francis would not accept his resignation following his conviction for covering up clerical sexual abuse, so he has decided to step aside temporarily for the good of the archdiocese.

Last Autumn the USCCB was all set to agree new sanctions, including on bishops, until its president, Cardinal DiNardo was told directly by the Pope to stop. Not much collegiality there. The fiction was that there were would be universal norms agreed at the talking shop.
Of course no such norms were agreed so it’s business as usual and the US Church still has no sanctions on bishops.
Why is the Pope so tin-eared on this. It’s rather like when during his failed Irish trip he patted Marie Collins on the head and mansplained to her that when she was next in Rome he would tell her why her proposed body to hold bishops to account was unworkable. It’s a rotten pontificate.

“It’s a rotten pontificate” – got it in one.
Francis is an authoritarian mason who only uses ‘collegiality’ when it suits him.
He’s a megalomaniac.

I think some diocese have instigated their own protocols for bishops – I think I read something about O’Malley in Boston setting up something independent so that the Boston bishops could be overseen, accountable etc. So, maybe many dioceses are beginning to do it independently of the USCCB ?
LikeLike
10:52 it’s all very well individual bishops such as O’Malley introducing new sanctions and procedures but that’s not the same as the USCCB doing it as a body.
That leaves at the discretion of each bishop and I can’t imagine much urgency on the part of Wuerl, Tobin and Cubich to do anything.
And Francis has been effusive in praising the lately deceased Danneels so no change at the top, unfortunately.

9.32: I wrote something similar yesterday, but less eloquently, as I was in a rage! In my late 70’s I share every sentiment you express. Sadly, this crisis is of our own making and therefore we have to live with the consequences. I hope that you, like me, have experienced some worthwhile fulfilment in your years of ministry. Our disillusion and hurt is not comparable to the awful, life changing hurt experienced by victims/survivors – a hurt lived every moment. I just wish and pray that our chosen, “shepherds/leaders” would be more caringly and compassionately pro-active in responding to all who hurt deeply. There is, as you express, one law for the higher echelons and another for those at the coal face of everyday ministry. We are, as a group within the Church, disposable, suspect, mostly uncared for by our Bishops, discredited because of the abuse by fellow clerics and we face our days under a cloud. When convenient we are dismissed as a nuisance when we make valid criticisms. And dare we face disfavour for whatever reason, we are literally on the scrap heap. For now I just remain focused on the “essence” of the gospel of Christ. But I agree with you that our experiences pale into insignificance compared to the hurt, pain and destruction caused to many by church personnel and their need for healing. That’s more necessary than my concerns. Let us live our days in trust and hope in God’s love and mercy.

There are people praying and sacrificing for good priests. Our Lady asked us to do this. The rot goes all the way to the top, but know that in the end her Immaculate Heart will triumph. Just persevere being a ‘good and faithful servant’ to Our Lord. The present personnel will pass, they just THINK that they are invincible!

If you were in Westminster, there is nothing as cold and damaging as the frigid fury of + Elsie. You get on his wrong side and you are ruined. All you get is a cold stare and a peremptory dismissal. Unless you are one of his favourites. Mind you, those change often as they become less useful to him and he moves on to people who can do things for him. Perhaps one day he will feel what it is like to be discounted. Maybe he’s beginning to feel it already as his grip on power and influence begins to slip away. He just needs to hope that his successor is a generous and kind man and takes care of him in his dotage.

The much vaunted zero tolerance policy seems to be applied highly selectively. It probably depends on where you are in the pond life. So, someone like me, low down on the food scale, would be out on my ear at the slightest accusation and required to leave my house, my home, my ministry and everything I hold dear. I would effectively be judged guilty at accusation. But, at the same time, under this zero tolerance policy, the likes of the Cardinals Barbarin and Pell are given wiggle room so that they can retain his position in the case of Barbarin, and his red hat and title in the case of Pell. How do you think that is going to inspire confidence in a zero tolerance policy, and reassure people that the Church, at all levels, is taking this matter seriously ? It looks rather like the Church leaders looking after their mates, and to hell with the rest of us.
I increasingly do not trust my Bishop or VG or Diocese or the Church. They will deal with me as an object to be pushed around, unilaterally moved, dispensable, removable, and when I retire they will do all they can to ensure that I am the least possible burden on them once I have passed my use by date. And all that in spite of what will be almost 50 years of ministry. If you ask the question about fairness and justice, they still revert back to the legal fiction that I am not employed by them, but am self-employed, an office holder, employed by God…..anything in order to avoid any responsibility. The Church’s social justice teachings apply to everybody else, it seems, except priests ! Bit like the zero tolerance policy applies to everybody else, but Cardinals !
Mind you, I do not expect any pity or sympathy. So many of my brother clergy have brought great shame on us as a group by their lifestyles and their behaviour, and we all have to bear the burden of that shame. It is inevitable that we are judged as a class. But, let me tell you, it is very uncomfortable and it hurts ! It pales in to comparison, however, to the harm and hurt that has been done to the innocents by abusive priests. I rightly hang my head in shame at what has gone on and what the Church continues to do in these matters.
It looks nice and balmy there in Rome, + Pat ? Short sleeve shirt weather. Enjoy !

Anon@9:32: In contrast to Magna’s comment at 10:10, I do have considerable sympathy for RC clerics who, with best intentions (albeit admittedly, like myself, very naive at the point of entering a seminary), embarked on what they then perceived as a pastoral worthwhile mission. Like you I recognise that a considerable number have utterly failed and the increasingly revealed evidence certainly begs questions as to the proportion of them who have been what Pat’s recent blog refers to as lazy dossers let alone abusers.
But even though as a humanist I disagree with the validity of religious belief, I continue to believe that there is a proportion of RC clerics who have retained authentic belief and practice of their original altruistic motivation. On the scales of worth, those altruistic clerics undoubtedly weigh heavily on the side of ‘doing good.’ It is a moot point to debate the ‘worth’ or otherwise of the whole RC church enterprise. We must be careful not to to tar all with the same brush.

I’ve a generally dim view of Authority and a tendency to cynicism with regard to Church politics (it’s a fine line between paranoia and intelligent observation)
Having said all that though surely the fact that the RC instituation is flying Pat over and listening to his evidence is a ray of light in an otherwise bleak landscape?
The RC Church of even 10 years ago wouldn’t have taken such a step? Maybe things are going to change? Instead of the usual round of whitewash and reshuffle?

MMM at 11.37, if you came down from the mountain like Katie Daly, you’d find many similarly good, honest and very conscientious clergy. I have never had any problems or criticisms of humanists, even when I disagree with much of their philosophy. I believe in listening carefully to others, respect and tolerance and a diversity of views. Each entity or organisation is not without faults and imperfections; every world view needs questioning and analysis, but the absolutist intolerance towards – and condemnation of all clergy is offensive and unjust. Otherwise your comments are good and honest. Mags Cartwheel could learn much from you. Could you mentor this crazy stray or find a cave for him in the Mourne Mts…??

I had to guide you through the throngs (pardon my stumbling there, dearest, but I almost said an indelicate word instead) of the faithful in the square that day, such were your hues and cries.
