Father Conor McCarthy, ordained in 2015 for Down and Connor and curate of Larne is rumoured to be planning a marriage soon.

The “bride” to be is another young gentleman according to talk circulating in clerical circles?.

Its quite sad and disappointing that a priest so recently ordained is leaving.

It also brings into question the effeciency of those involved in priestly formation that someone so recently out of the seminary finds himself unsuited to the priesthood.

Conor was appointed to Larne where I live and was sharing a house with a priest in his 70s who could not be accurately described as a party lover.

The parochial house looks like a morgue and there seldom a light on or any sign of life.

I don’t know what Noel Treanor was thinking when he sent a newly ordained priest, fresh out of a seminary community to a premises with the ambience of an old person’s home!

But our old friend Treanor gives the impression that he does not care and does not have a clue!

The Blog has received a report that Father Ciaran Dallat who made one of his parishioners pregnant has been in to St. Louise’s Comprehensive College on the Falls Road to engage is some kind of pastoral work?

Father Dallat made one of his Sacred Heart Parish parishioners pregnant and left her to cope with a miscarriage while he went out for dinner.

After a short time “off the mission” Noel Treanor made his chaplain to Maghaberry Men’s Prison near Lisburn in Co. Antrim.

Since he went there he has been keeping a low profile – organising a prisoner’s choir.

A school source say that he has visited St. Louise’s in recent times for pastoral occasions.

St. Louise’s is one of the biggest schools in the UK attended by 1500 + GIRLS.

Does Noel Treanor know that Father Dallat is involved in St. Louise’s?

The talk among the clergy is that Treanor wants Dallat to return to a parish this year as there are five PPs retiring and one young PP is seriously ill.

In spite of the priest shortage in D&C Treanor still has priests fulfilling office roles – jobs that could be perfectly done by qualified lay people.

It seems that Treanor likes having a clerical court around him.

ST LOUISES CELEBRATES ITS DIAMOND JUBILEE.

St Louise’s College is celebrating its 60thAnniversary this year. Mass was held to commemorate the prestigious college’s Diamond Jubilee at St Peter’s Cathedral on Thursday 13 September.

The Mass, celebrated by Father Ciaran Dallatt and assisted by Father Martin Graham, was attended by all current staff, members of the Board of Governors, a representational body of students as well as past members of staff.

Principal, Miss Mary McHenry, paid tribute to the generations of former colleagues, Governors, parents and students who, under the inspirational leadership of Sister Ita, Sister Genevieve and Sister Rosaleen, and in 2005, Mrs McCartan, created a Catholic, Vincentian, Comprehensive College recognised as a centre of excellence for all.

Former A’Level Art student, Leah Davis (pictured below), painted an interpretive portrait of the college’s patron saint, St Louise de Marillac, to commemorate the occasion.

Congratulations St Louise’s and may you continue to be a centre of excellence for future generations.

John XXIII was rotund and Francis is quite a bit more rotund than when elected. The food must be be better in the new casa where he took over a bigger floorspace than Benendict at a cost of €3m but appearances are everything.

Tim Bartlett could fill one of the PP vacancies. The singing priest in the Chancerry could take on one, as could the PR priest, the priest in Aquinas grammar school, Fr Spencer the Rector of the now closed seminary is long overdue a spell in a parish and Noel himself could be the real as opposed to titular PP of the parish around Lisbreen. That would remove a lot of the pressure.

Don’t forget the full-time youth ministry priest who looks like someone out of Fr Ted. Noel in his Chrism Mass sermon warned that by 2020 lots of PPs would not be replaced and priests would have the care of several parishes. He added that lay people would do funeral services and burials, with a Requiem Mass once a month for those who had died in the weeks previously. Yet there are nearly ten D&C priests in desk jobs or doing postgraduate studies.
And before anyone says not every priest is suited to parish work, it should be made clear to applicants to the diocesan priesthood that it is parish and chaplaincy work only. If they want to be deskmen join the civil service as holy laymen, if they want to be teachers in schools just be holy lay teachers and if they want to be academic priests join the OPs or SJs.
It is unfair to ask the parishoners to fund the extremely expensive formation of diocesan sems who then never serve in parishes.

The deskmen see themselves as “too good” to serve in parishes. They are all episcopabile (possible bishops). They are “officer class material”, unlike the pleb priests who are only fit to serve in parishes. That’s the mentality. Isn’t it both incredible and hilarious? 😂😳

The question about competence in Latin is not concerned about what a deacon does or does not say at Mass. Rather it is directed towards his participatio actuosa as Sacrosanctum concilium exhorts. It’s based on the premise that if he doesn’t know Latin he shouldn’t be anywhere near a form of the Mass according to the post-Tridentine missal of Pius V.
The sooner that the Holy Father Francis rescinds Benedict’s Summorum Pontificum the better. It’s unheard of in church history to have a pre-reformed and reformed form of a liturgical rite co-existing. He’s probably waiting for Benedict to be called to his eternal reward first.

You must have been sitting at the back in Prof McGoldrick’s liturgy classes.
Trent codified but did not invent the Mass which was known from antiquity . It said that any usage up to 200 years before it could be used in the Latin Rite. It allowed for eg the Ambrosian, the Carmelite, the Carthusian and Dominican Masses.

Conor McCarthy was one of NT’s “bright young things”! Indeed, he didn’t last pissing time and they had such high hopes for him. As soon as he discovered his micky wasn’t just for doing a wee wee, he was off like a butcher’s dog!
Initially, it was rumoured, one of the fairer sex had caused the “awakening” but it makes much more sense that it’s some young buck like himself.
Lots of D&C clerics tied up in administrative duties indeed – including one big Gerri Fox – an interesting character by every account.
My sources tell me many D&C clergy have just given up. NT cannot make a decision. The Living Church Office runs the show overseen by an aging, “peace out man”, very passive aggressive, hippie type of character, who fancies himself as a sort of spiritual guru cum prophet.
Yes it most certainly is a Mess and it’s hard to find God anywhere in it so I’m told.
And where is Timothy Bartlett these days? Is he having therapy after the WMOF debacle? +Diarmuid in his Irish Times extensive interview more or less trashed the organisers of last August’s Biggest Flop in the Recent History of the Universal Church.
And, after a number of failures/disappointments over getting a pointy hat like all his heroes, it can’t be easy for Timothy.
Anyhow, Pat, there could well be a scoop in your discovery of Six Dinner Dallat being let loose among the gentle, retiring and comely maidens of St Louise’s. Many are surprised that you are only finding out about it now.
Why did Noel try to keep the appointment quiet one wonders? No doubt Ciaran Barnes will want to discuss it with him.

On the St Louisa’s School website, in the section on their Diamond Jubilee, there are dozens of pictures of the celebrations, including many taken inside St Peter’s Cathedral before or after the Mass.

But not one picture will you find of the Mass itself or the celebrants of the Mass – Frs Dallat and Graham. Not one.

So is the school aware or fearful that the presence of Lothario Dallat would raise eyebrows? Cause a media sensation?

There is no mention of Dallat anywhere on the school website as a chaplain and yet chaplain he is!!! Why are they trying to keep it a secret??

A wee phone call on Monday, Pat, to the school? Or perhaps one of your journalist friends!!

Just had a look at the priest on the icatholic player he’s on talking about his vocation story etc. He’s a lot hotter in the video than in that photo. I hope he’ll be happy going forward, if what you say is true. He was in Seminary in Rome, who was his director of Formation?

I did say a couple of times previously, Bp Pat, that civil partnership or same sex marriage would become an option for priests and seminarians too should they fall in love as this young man has done.
Of course, he could join the Church of England and still follow his calling, but he must remain celibate. Alternatively, the Church of Scotland, which has no such restrictions.
It would be churlish of you, Bp Pat, not wish this young man and his future husband good luck and hope their life together will be filled with joy, happiness and lots of love!

I think I got that wrong, gay clergy in the COE are not allowed to enter same sex marriage, but I am not sure about civil partnerships. The Church of Scotland allow gay marriage for ministers and are not interested what they do in bed.

I imagine St Louise’s has had its fair share of Gymslip mums since its establishment in 1958, but it seems rather rash to have “Father” Dallat associated with the college, especially when he is known to have previously… well, let’s just say… put it about.

Not the first time Conor has been discussed on this blog, and one infers he was having doubts almost as soon as he was ordained. I hardly think his having to share a house with a miserable old git can explain his actions. The old git was presumably lenient enough to allow Conor to meet up with the guy he now intends to marry – the tyrannical parish priests of the old days would have taken a diffferent line. Let’s consider yet again the thoroughly mendacious system which facilitated this ridiculous state of affairs. I’d draw attention to an interview Conor gave the Irish Catholic on May 15th, 2014 when he was a transitional deacon in which he mouths every platitude in what must be a clerical hand-book of bull-shit. We are told of his burning love for Christ which over-rode his natural feelings from an early age that he would marry and have children – the gullible reader is left to assume ( “naturally” ) that this would have been with a lady not as it unsurprisingly turns out to be with a gentleman. There is no discussion of his homosexuality, which was the true counterpoint “from a very early age” to his love for Christ which would turn him into a liar and a charlatan. He has fooled the people who have footed the bill for his expensive training and lengthy period of “discernment” and the people have only themselves to blame for allowing this and not having the intelligence and integrity to ask a few questions.
This blog is one of the few places where awkward questions are asked, so thank God for it. We know full well that the toxic culture of cover up is the norm in the Roman Catholic Church. A couple of months ago the question was raised concerning the disappearance of a prominent English priest, Daniel Seward, Provost of the Oxford Oratory. It might be thought that confident articulate parishioners would want to know why somebody who was the poster boy of every parish newsletter has suddenly been removed yet is still listed as parish priest as if nothing has ever happened.
Significantly Conor refers to Newman as his inspiration. It might well be that slippery character has become a “saint” for our times along with other mendacious and bloody awful characters such as JPII and “Hell’s Angel” Mother Teresa.

Re Daniel Seward: the Cong Orats are desperate to stop anything spoiling the recent successes they have been having and over which they are creaming themselves – namely, + Tubby Fatso Byrne going up to Newcastle, and Newman being declared a saint. They see these as signs of God’s blessing on their way of life and culture and the silliness of wandering around in birettas and acting as if they are all 75 year olds living in the 19th century. They will keep as quiet as they can about Seward and his doings in order not to caste a shadow over these things. However, it is not beyond the wit of some enterprising investigative journalist to take a look at things, certainly once interest in Newman’s canonisation gets in to the popular imagination and the press. Then somebody will spend the time and resources to winkle out what is happening with Seward and link it, him, and the Cong Orats and their antics with Newman’s canonisation. You can see the headlines already ! I think the Cong Orats would have been far wiser to get the Seward business out in to the public domain and deal with it speedily rather than letting it fester and spoil their canonisation WankFest further down the line.

As you say the Oxford Oratorians have been held up as model of successful parish practice, and Seward particularly their poster boy. Whenever a petition was drawn up to defend traditional teaching on marriage, his name was there, so if he has had a rethink like Conor, or should his private life have been afterall at variance with his public persona, I think the faithful have a right to hold him to accountability. Fat chance of getting honest answers from the Oratorians so someone should go digging.

Saint Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast

I “I will sing forever of your love, O Lord, (Ps 88)

With the strains of the refrain from the Responsorial Psalm in our ears and hearts – “ I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord” – a love we shall follow and celebrate over the coming days of the sacred Triduum – I welcome you all to this Chrism Mass in St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast. As I welcome you

from the parishes of the diocese and their numerous organisations and groups,
the pupils and teachers from several schools,
women and men from the numerous diocesan and parish offices,
the directors and staff of our diocesan services (Family Ministry, Living Youth, all associated with the Growing in Faith Together (GIFT) initiatives), Safeguarding Services, the Lourdes pilgrimage teams
Religious, members of monastic communities.
In your name I also welcome all guests who join us here or via the webcam and other linking technologies.

It is an immense joy this year to welcome the newly ordained Permanent Deacons, their wives and family members. At an initial review meeting just over a week ago, these nine men reported on the extent and variety of their ministerial outreach in our parishes and Pastoral Communities, in prisons, hospitals, at the service of persons entrapped in addictions. And they spoke of the universal and growing acceptance of their ministry both liturgical and in works of charity by all. May you, my brothers in Christ, and those presently in training for the permanent diaconate, continue to grow in your vocation.

With all of you assembled here this morning, in your name and in my own, I thank the priests and Religious of our diocese for their ministries and service in trying times and in betimes stressful context for their work, fidelity and dedication to those in their care. And I thank you my brothers in priestly ministry for your support, encouragement and friendship. And with you I extend our greetings to retired priests of our diocese in Nursing Homes, to priests in hospitals, and to those who unable to be with us through the weakness of age, illness, recuperation or due to the needs of their people.

We pray God’s abundant blessing on us here present and throughout our diocese, my dear people, as we enter the sacred Triduum together with Our Holy Father, Pope Francis and the Church universal throughout the world.

II “Grace and peace to you from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first born from the dead” (Apoc 1.5)

Each year the liturgy of the Word for the Chrism Mass and the feast of the Priesthood nourish us with these readings from the prophet Isaiah, from the Apocalypse and from the gospel according to St Luke. With those familiar lines from Isaiah chapter 61, these extracts from the Word of God immerse the ministerial priesthood and indeed all ministries of service to the Christian community in the mission statement of Jesus of Nazareth. Then the second reading from the Apocalypse of St John anchors all our ministries in the ultimate divine witness to self-sacrificing love and dedication. Those lines root all priestly service, ministerial, diaconal and other, in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Taken together these readings remind us that we minister the life and hope of a new and eternal order.

As we know, the holy oils and the sacred Chrism, which are to be blessed, are used for sacramental anointing. They are the sacred elements and symbols of the continuing re-birthing of humanity in Christ to the gift of eternal life now in this world and in eternity.

In a sense, in the cycle of the Christian year, the Chrism Mass is the yearly relay station for saint and sinner at the Porta Coeli, at the gate of the celestial city.

For us your priests, this liturgy re-sources and renews our priestly ministry in the service of the network of the pastoral outreach of all the ministries exercised by so many in our parishes, pastoral communities and diocese and continue the mission of Jesus in time and generation.

Today we recall that this pastoral outreach has been invigorated over the past year by the worship, prayer, faith-building initiatives and works of charity carried on by our parishes animated by our priests, by the Religious communities and by the myriad societies and faith-based groups and initiatives that express the faith of our people.

As a faith community and Church we have also been enriched since last we gathered for this Chrism Mass by a range of significant faith-inspired initiatives such as :

The publication on 9th April past of Pope Francis encyclical, Gaudete et Exultate, on the meaning of holiness
The World Meeting of Families in Dublin in August last year
and in our diocese, the ordination of nine men to the Permanent Diaconate on Sunday, 14th October past
The Synod of Bishops on Faith, Youth and Vocational Discernment in October 2018
And on foot of that Synod, the publication on 25 March past, the Feast of the Annunciation, of the post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation, Christus Vivit, to the Young People of the entire world
Through this sample of initiatives from the calendar of the life of the Church universal and local, we see the indivisible link between the call to holiness, the realities of family life and pastoral care and outreach to youth and future generations.

That care for the life of faith of future generations should also form a central part of the celebration of the Extraordinary Mission Month declared by Pope Francis for next October. It is designed to mark the centenary of the great Mission encyclical, Maximum illud and to focus our attention on the challenge of Christian mission and vocation for our present time in the local Church and in world society.

III Mission in our time, culture and local Church : Pastoral Letter and Novena for Vocations

In line with all these initiatives, we greet therefore today the initiative of the Vocations Working Group of our diocese to promote vocations to the priesthood. Their initiative implements and follows through on these events in the life of the Church over the past year. With faith, prayer and work they have followed a path that has led to the production of the Pastoral Letter on vocations and a call to a diocese-wide novena in parish, family and school, beginning on May 2nd and ending on Good Shepherd Sunday. We will each receive a copy of the Pastoral Letter, To follow Jesus closely, as we leave the cathedral today. I encourage you to read it at home and to discuss it around the family table.

This Pastoral Letter and the novena focus on the discernment of vocations and particularly on the promotion of vocations to the diocesan priesthood. It is most encouraging to know that some Pastoral Communities in the diocese have already lined up a rich programme of prayer, talks and reflection for the Novena.

Our diocese needs priests. Currently we have three students for the priesthood in seminary and our Vocations Director is accompanying a group of interested potential candidates.

We have all heard of the declining number of priests and the steeply declining graph for the coming years. We know that by 2023 at least fourteen currently serving priests in the eighty seven parishes of our diocese will have reached retirement age. They will not be replaced. By then and within five to ten years one priest will have charge of a group of parishes, the faithful and the Churches within those parishes.

Evidently, we shall see significant change in the coming decade. For example, funeral services and burials will be led by women and men, by fellow parishioners, with monthly Requiem Mass for those who have died during the previous weeks. as is the case already in other countries. Permanent Deacons, already celebrating the sacraments of Baptism and Matrimony as well as exercising their ministry in a wide range of good works on the peripheries of life and society, will, we pray, be joined by others who discern a vocation to serve our local Church in the diaconate. New patterns and forms of collaborative ministry, of pastoral care and of worship will emerge at the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Models are already present and at work in numerous organisations such as, St Vincent de Paul, the Legion of Mary.

Numbers and a calculus for replacement of priests, important though they are, are not the whole story, however. Indeed, such lines of thinking are not the emergent story! A sense of history and the tradition of the Church in Ireland reveals as much.

Each age and generation is called, as Pope Francis remarks in his Apostolic Exhortation to young people of the world, Christus Vivit, to “discern pathways where others only see walls, to recognise potential where others see only peril” (C.V 67).

It is for precisely this reason that our diocesan Living Church process and Pastoral Plan have put building stones and “pathways” for our parishes and pastoral communities of tomorrow : the Parish Pastoral Councils, Finance Councils, the Pastoral Community Forums, training programmes in Facilitative and Discerning Leadership skills, faith formation programmes in place. These are missionary steps. These are some of the means by which through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit we pray and hope that new form is given to what Pope Francis describes as “an open and evangelising environment” (G.E. 145) and “a God enlightened space where the presence of the risen Lord is experienced” ( G.E. 142).

For all of us, whether our vocation has taken us on the way of Religious or Monastic life, Consecrated life, diocesan priest, parishioner married or single, engagement with these processes of evangelisation requires a spiritual courage. It demands betimes even a self-abandonment in order to tread in the footsteps of that puzzling Emmaus road rather than languor comfortably and self-defensively in what Pope Francis has described “the avid paralysis of the living dead, who have no life because they are afraid to take risks, to make mistakes or to persevere in their commitments” (C. V. 142).

And so, as a local Church, aware that our generation stands on the cusp of seismic change and transformation in the pastoral care and provision, in this Easter season of new life, hope and missionary mandate, we take up a vital challenge for the future of faith and mission.

As we prepare to bless the Holy Oils and the sacred Chrism for sacramental ministry, for grafting the new born, the living adult, the sick and the dying into the life of the Risen Christ, we undertake together as an entire diocese the task of praying for, encouraging and promoting vocations to the diocesan priesthood.

With this Pastoral Letter, To follow Jesus closely, and the Vocations Novena I ask each priest, deacon, each parent, the members of parish councils and pastoral community forums, our teachers and staff of our schools to become ambassadors for vocational discernment.

From time to time we meet a person whose lifestyle manifests signs of a priestly vocation. We should not fear to raise the subject with them. Encouragement and prayerful accompaniment is vital for the further discernment of a nascent vocation.

Priestly Ministry – a life time’s adventure
As I invite all to read this Pastoral Letter, to take up in home, school and parish the novena for vocations in May, it goes without saying that vocation to Christ’s priesthood cannot be caught in any one model of priesthood. Whether as celebrant of the sacred mysteries, preacher, pastor, teacher, administrator, or prophetic champion of the oppressed, the priestly ministry is, like all ministries, a participation in the mystery of the living, crucified and risen Christ.

Priestly ministry is a fulfilling life. It is a life time’s adventure. It’s a life which also entails self-sacrifice for God and for others. It tries and trials each in different ways, like parents’ creative lives are tried and tested. In words from a poem, by the late William Philbin, one time bishop of this diocese and buried here in the Mortuary chapel, the priest is called “to make all world ways Emmaus roads”[1].

Now, as we set to renewing the promises of priestly ordination, let us all pray with and for all of us in holy orders – priests, bishops, permanent deacons – and also for all who through their work in our parishes extend and insert the ministry of Word, Sacrament and charity into the streets, laneways, gatherings, and homes of countless thousands throughout our diocese and its parishes.

Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will stir and move hearts and minds to respond to the call to serve as priests and religious and let us give thanks today for the ministry of all our priests living now and with the communion of the saints in the world to come.

I suppose many people will be thinking that this is all Conor McCarty’s fault – he is abandoning his priesthood, his faith, his Church, his parishioners, his vows etc. etc.

Yet, the truth may well be that it is the Church that has abandoned him ? The Church may well have let him down. From the way that he was formed in system that is recognised nowadays as not fit for purpose (putting seminarians in an all male, almost monastic environment, with little awareness or training of the real world and how real people live, especially the opposite sex, and with an emphasis on academics and little practical pastoral engagement, and most importantly a severely lacking programme of human development in order to ensure that priests are grounded, mature, emotionally stable, integrated and healthy), to the way that he has been supported since his ordination (he seems to have just been slung out of the seminary in to an environment that lacks the help and encouragement that anybody needs in their first job). Consequently, he has fallen pretty early on in his priesthood.

So, rather than focusing on Conor and his failings, we should be focusing on the Church and the way that it brings young men to priesthood and how inadequate that is. It is no wonder that Conor has found things tough.

I wish him well in whatever the next phase of life brings him, and if that is in a relationship with another man, then may he find love, warmth, happiness and fulfilment. He evidently hasn’t been able to find those things within the Church and its priesthood. Like so many priests, many of whom end up hollowed out, unhappy, dysfunctional, and some of them acting out abusively.

Dallat should be nowhere near a school for girls. Parents should make their views known. Indeed, the Safeguarding people at the school (supposedly independent ?) should be taking an interest in this. The Safeguarding people at whatever NI Government Dept. looks after education should be aware of his history and take a view. OFSTED for NI should know about this. Really, who does Dallat or the school or the governors or whomsoever controls the place think they are doing ? Parents – let the school know your views, please. Not for the first time the matter of maturity is mentioned above by Pat. I’m seeing a lot of issues raised here which can be related to a lack of maturity in one way or another, and I think a lot of the problem is that much of Catholic ethics and whole ethos does not have as its ideal a mature, autonomous and responsible adult. The model is of the family, with the priest as father, the church or our Lady as mother and the faithful as perpetual infants who can’t be trusted to make decisions. The problem then is these infants are thrust into position of leadership.
If a man has made a woman pregnant, even if in a situation where it was wrong in some way, unless they have mutually agreed that he would only father the child and have no further involvement, his first priority is the safety and well-being of his child and its mother. Even if the child was the result of a bad decision.

It is a CCMS school. This is a corrupt and morally bankrupt organisation funded via public funds. They appoint who they want, get rid of who they want – right under the nose of the law. If they want Dallat in, he is in! The Principal etc are powerless to do otherwise, if they open their mouths , give it a year or two – they will be out with a cloud hanging over them; never to work again in Education. Dear Principal / Head Teacher of St Louise’s Comprehensive College Belfast,
I have become aware that Fr Ciaran Dallat has recently been acting in a pastoral and priestly role at your school, including celebrating your recent 60th Anniversary Mass.
I have for a long time known of Fr Dallas’s history of affairs with women, including at least one pregnancy, outside of marriage and whilst he was a priest. Much of this is public knowledge after being reported widely in the media.
It seems to me that there are some serious questions to be asked about Fr Dallas’s involvement in a pastoral and priestly capacity in a girls’ school. Is this man a suitable and appropriate person to be ministering to your students, given his past history ? Have all Safeguarding considerations been taken in to account ? Do the parents of the girls in your school know about Fr Dallas’s history, past behaviour and present involvement in your school ? Have you considered any of these matters before allowing Fr Dallat to act in any capacity in your school ? I could go on !
I do not wish Fr Dallat any ill will in asking these questions. My motivation is to ensure that you are aware of his past history and have duly considered his suitability and appropriateness to carry out pastoral and priestly activities in your school. You will be well aware of the difficulty that is caused when due diligence and process is not followed, and you will be aware of the primacy of Safeguarding in schools and the protection of children and young people.
I would be interested to hear from you that you are aware of all these matters, and that you have undergone a process of diligence and care in the matter of Fr Dallat, and the criteria that you have used in arriving at the decision to allow Fr Dallat to act in a pastoral and priestly role in your school.

Dallat and his like make their “mistakes’, get found out, do a bit of prayer and penance and outwardly take to their priesthood and celibacy in a seemingly renewed way…..but, if you dig a bit deeper, my money is on him carrying on as he always has done, and he will be enjoying himself to the full, only a bit more prudently. A leopard does not change his spots. He will have hung on for dear life to his clerical career because he knows that he would not find something as comfortable, as easy, as well paid outside of the priesthood. I wrote the letter above. I haven’t sent it yet. I wanted to see what people thought about it here. I anticipated the bluff, bluster, outrage and threats of @1:34. Pretty predictable from people who have been rumbled, and know that there is something intrinsically iffy about Dallat’s antics at St Louise’s. It appears that they have done everything they can to keep this quiet (no pictures, no mention of him on their website, except the mistake of mentioning that he celebrated the 60th Anniversary Mass), which is an indication that they know they are on thin ice.
I have no problem with giving the likes of Dallat a second chance (although, I am pretty sure that he will have reverted to type in the intervening years, as the reinvented and renewed penitent priests generally do), but that needs to be judged very carefully. Perhaps his prison ministry is about all he is suited for. Appointing a serial womaniser who gets a women pregnant and then scarpers, and that when he is in ministry and under a promise of celibacy, seems incredibly ill judged. There are deep Safeguarding issues here, quite obviously. Cat among the pigeons, fox in the hen house etc., comes to mind. Remember also that Dallat’s behaviour seems to be part of his familial DNA – his uncle, the bishop, was up to all sorts of things with women, wasn’t he ?
The school, the headteacher, the governors etc., and + Noel, really do need to answer the questions I put in this letter so that we can have confidence that this appointment has been done properly and after due consideration of Dallas’s predilections, background, past behaviour, and Safeguarding issues. It is only what would happen in any other responsible and switched on institution or organisation.
What I sense from all of this is that the Church in the form of its bishop and D&C simply have not learned the lessons of the past. They are naive at best (eg. Dallat’s past behaviour is simply a spiritual and moral problem that can be sorted out by a bit of prayer and penance, rather than an ingrained psycho-sexual modus operandi that will still be there and will out when he feels confident and secure), but what is worst is that they have resorted to subterfuge and trying to keep things quiet and cover things up. That is precisely the culture that has got our Church in to such trouble in the past. Will they never learn ?!
I will send this letter. And, I am hoping that journalists and newspapers will have noted this blog and will take the issue further, and ask the questions in their forum that should be asked. I could write the headline !
I have no animus personally against Dallat. As I have said, I believe that he should be given a second chance, in the right environment and ministry but carefully surveilled, given his past behaviour and history, which is in the public domain. But this appointment is just madness and indicates a carelessness, and an arrogance, that is outstanding. What is essentially at risk here is the Safeguarding of the girls in this school. Dallat’s wellbeing, comfort, and employment are secondary here.
