TREANOR’S RAGE AT RELIGIOUS ORDERS PULLING OUT OF D&C PARISHES.

D&C BISHOP NOEL TREANOR OF CHATEAU NOEL BELFAST IS RAGING THAT SOME RELIGIOUS ORDERS AND PRIESTS ARE PULLING OUT OF D&C.

His big upcoming problem is that the Millhill Fathers are leaving the very busy St. Mary’s Parish in Belfast city centre.

At a meeting of the Millhill Fathers Tuesday April 29th, just gone, they decided to give Treanor a July departure date – giving him 8 plus weeks to get somebody else to do it.

The Millhills seem to have been told that the D&C vicar general, Eugene O’Hagan is being moved there?

A few months ago another religious order priest lulled out of Glenavy parish to become a PP in London.

Treanor is believed to have accused the priest of not giving him enough notice.

The priest, with no fear of bishops answered: “I came here for a year and have stayed four. You’ve had three years notice”!

Treanor has even more problems.

This year five or six elderly PPs will retire with very few to replace them.

One youngish PP is very ill and cannot work.

Its about time he started putting the parish dodgers into parishes:

1.Timmy Bartlett – “episcopal vicar for education”.

2. Eugene O’Hagan – “chancellor”

3. Joe Glover – Mystery Job?

4. Gerard Fox “diocesan secretary”.

5. Andrew Black – “studying in Rome.

6. Paul Fleming – St. Mary’s College Belfast.

7. Colin Grant Aquinas Grammar School.

8. Dominic McGrattan “Living Church”.

9. Oliver Treanor – Maynooth.

That’s 9 parishes filled!

Priests are primarily ordained to celebrate the sacraments and give pastoral care for the People of God.

A lot of these special priests think they are too good and too special for a parish.

Lay men and women can be secretaries, chancellors, teachers, lecturers, administrators etc.

In the meantime the Redemptorist PP of Turf Lodge refuses to live in the presbytery preferring to live with a friend in West Belfast.

Treanor is fiddling while D&C burns and is presiding over decline from his palatial Chateau Noel in cosy Lisbreen.

He did venture out recently to purchase a new, top of the range, Volvo.

I agree totally with 11.09 pm. Treanor is an excellent bishop and the idea that all the Church needs is priests to confect the Eucharist misses entirely the pastoral needs of the Irish faithful. The mind needs to be nourished. Release the power of “the sleeping giant”, the laity, by proper accompaniment and guidance.

The Mill Hill Missionaries have given great service to St Mary’s and it’s important in the Catholic history of Belfast and has a great ministry. I’m sure they are right to think that with declining numbers, and getting older, the young desk men can take up some of the slack. Isn’t the hitting 60 youth ministry priest next door? He could do both jobs.
As Pat says, the days of diocesan priests being chancellors, secretaries, bursars, school teachers, university lecturers, press officers, ‘Living Church’ officers, postgraduates is well and truly over. It’s like training to be a doctor but never working in a surgery.

Indeed. Basil liked his secretaries to be young and/or camp – and naturally male, unlike that old nun attached to Vinny – so a driver would have been a “three is a crowd” situation. Jim Curry wasn’t bad looking in those days and still at least looks distinguished; he is of course a graduate of early eighties Allen Hall in its “glory days” under now disgraced Mgr John Coughlan. Pat, do you have any information about how the Diocese of Derry is currently doing under Bishop Donal McKeown? He made a big part of his Chrism Mass address focusing on the lack of priests and the coming of mass reductions in Derry, possibly starting this August with the upcoming clergy changes.
I was speaking with a priest who serves in one of the city parishes of Derry, who I have known for 13 years now, he is a trusted man, and he told me he is worried that parishioners will not know what hit them, as Bishop McKeown has a huge plan, to drastically cut back clergy numbers, merge more parishes and reduce mass times by 50%, especially in the main Derry City parishes from August 2019.
He said currently, Saint Eugene’s Cathedral has too many masses with too little priests. They just have two resident full time priests living in the cathedral house, and are assisted by three very old retired clergy and the bishop. Two vigil masses on a Saturday evening and five masses on a Sunday. He said he does not know how the cathedral has managed with that schedule up to this point.
He said there was an example of the lack of priests available last month, when a person died in the neighbouring Long Tower parish, and the one resident priest there was away on a hospital call, and no other priest was available, so the call had to be transferred to the cathedral, where both priests were also away on emergency calls, and the emergency had to be dealt with by a retired priest, in his mid 80s, as there was no other option.
Derry parishioners have been living with plenty of mass times, and they have been cushioned a bit from the fall in clergy numbers, but this priest has seen the plans for the diocese, and boy are they in for a shock.

You all attack bishop Noel and he has 81 parishes and in his sixties and yet the Papal nuncio get an Auxiliary for Armagh what a joke.

Here is facts for IRELAND it has far too many Dioceses, far too many parishes and more so far too many Holy Masses so it is time for change.

Very strange appointment as you know three names go to Rome and usually for a Auxiliary Bishop it is the current Archbishop who has a big say and is this sending out a message to the Clergy of Armagh that none of them are up to it.
However it seems that the new Auxiliary Bishop is from one of the metropolitan areas that’s part of the Archdioceses.
It gives hope in the Archdiocese of Glasgow as they have been awaiting an Auxiliary Bishop for a long time and Glasgow used to have two Auxiliary Bishops.
It is rumoured that three times clergy of the Archdiocese have said No Thanks for the offer so maybe they will look at Paisley or Motherwell and that would be interesting maybe Dan Fitzpatrick maybe in the running.

I think we can all agree Treanor is a disgrace, but, picking up the comments yesterday that bishops no longer even confirm – which one would have thought is one of their most basic duties as well as an opportunity actually to engage with their people rather go on fact finding trips in far off lands of which they know nothing – we might ask what is the use of them? Take a look at Ireland, Scotland, E & W, and draw your own conclusions.
Meanwhile the Catholic Herald, which normally falls over itself in idolizing Old Mother Burke and promoting the creepy Dominican Aidan Nichols as our greatest living theologian, carries a report throwing cold water on the latest attempt by the usual suspects to cast Pope Francis as a heretic for assorted crimes such as using the wrong type of crozier. The name of Father Daniel Seward, normally one of this courageous band of brothers ( no sisters unsurprisingly ) is curiously absent.

Where is Daniel ? Anybody know ? These Oratorians do have a tendency to disappear. Like the 3 from the Birmingham Oratory who were exiled before Benedict 16 visited. The dirt on Daniel will be dished eventually, and it is in the interests of both him and the Cong Orats to deal with it earlier than later. You are totally wrong about Confirmations in Scotland and England and Wales as it is the Archbishops and Bishops that do confirmations over a four month timetable.

the Archbishops and Bishops visit the Schools first before Confirmation and then they do the Confirmation sometimes every night.

Another thing in Scotland and England and Wales they are done at NIGHT as people work during the day.

The Cardinal, Archbishops and Bishops of Scotland, England and Wales are not shy their diary or timetables are weekly / Monthly on their web sites and that would put most Irish Bishops too shame.

You can never get a straight answer where the Church is concerned, so don’t fob us off with “the Cardinal’s appointment diary”. How does it read? Monday, Heathrow executive lounge, Thursday- Friday, caravan – no reporters! Saturday, summon ex-Anglicans to glacial chat – no coffee!

In its present format, the Church will simply crumble and die. Because it insists on basing and organising itself through a highly clerical structure that is now not fit for purpose. Older priests, fewer priests, fewer newly ordained, fewer seminarians. Not to mention the quality or commitment of some of the latter categories.
I have recently retired from ministry, a few years before the expected retirement age of 75. Not because I am ill or because I have to for any of the reasons that some clergy have to lay down their ministry. Nothing disciplinary or to do with safeguarding. Simply because after many decades of hard work and ministry, all I can see before me now if I remain in ministry is more and more being piled on to me as I get older and older, and probably with an expectation that I will carry on beyond the normal retirement age. There are many interesting and wonderful things that I want to do before I get too old to do them, including reconnecting with family and friends, and taking things are bit slower and enjoying them.
I could stay on. But I have decided that all I will be doing is propping up a system that is going inevitably to collapse if it continues in its current form. I could stand by the dyke and keep my finger in the hole and keep the show on the road, but when I keel over I am sure that the dyke will crumble anyway and in spite of all my efforts to keep it intact.
For the last few years I have been in a severe minority of people who were still working. All my non-priest friends are retired. All my family are retired. And, at a younger age than I am now.
Nobody in the Church seems to be bothered at the looming crisis. No bishop really wants to grasp the nettle and look at radical solutions. They tinker at the edges, amalgamate parishes, put more on to the existing priests, and mutter sweet nothings about lay involvement. But they do nothing that really makes a difference.
I am lucky in that I have options. I recognise that some of my brother clergy don’t have these options and are stuck where they are. Everything they have as a living is tied up in working for the Church, with little or no independent resources or pension provisions, and even in retirement they are expected to be on call, to do supply work, and essentially remain in harness and service. It’s a a pretty feudal way of life. All wrapped up, of course, in the nonsense of filial and religious obedience !
So, where could our dear Bishops and leaders start ? Well, a radical look at the structure of the Church and the way it ministers to people. Much more lay involvement that means lay people having a big say in the running of their parish as they want it to run, and calingl the tune. Clergy who are much more reflective of the society and world in which we live, rather than reflecting a society that is hundreds of years out of date. That means a much more inclusive Church and ministry, with priests drawn from among married men, women priests, priests of different and alternative life styles and sexualities. If you want a Church that is vibrant, alive and joyful, then these changes need to happen. If you want a miserable remnant that wallows in its isolated purity, then carry on as we are. And spare me the faux outrage about morality, and the normative example of Jesus choosing only men for ministry. We have grown way beyond those limitations of gender, morality and sexuality and are surely capable of a much more honest and nuanced approach to these matters.
Anyhow, I’m off. I’m content to remain a priest (indelible sacramental sign and all that nonsense stuff I learned in seminary !), but I chose not to exercise in a public way my priesthood. My bishop is furious firstly, and secondly just uncomprehending. He uses all the blackmail he can in order to get me to change my mind. I’m so glad that I have the backing and support and financial independence in order to be able to tell him that I will not be swayed.
I will not be used as a stopgap to plug gaps that he and his brother Bishops won’t address, because they are timid, unimaginative and are wedded to a clerical structure that is essentially built around their own self interests, authority, influence, power and comfort. What is happening to the Church and will happen in the future is on their shoulders. I do not have confidence that they are up to the job.

Father, I hope you enjoy your retirement and hope you do help out where you can in supply work.

Sadly you are correct about the state of the Church but be assured it will never die as Our Lady will never abandon us.

It is the Church leadership that is wrong and furthermore parish priest who will not let go and still want to see to the plumbing and so on and counting the money.

The Pastoral Councils were / should be sent up and the Priest will see to what he is ordained to do the sacraments however some parishes are well organised with these Pastoral councils.

sadly this is NOT happening and like above too many Masses and Parishes.

Thank you for getting to the heart of the matter. In England the crisis in parishes has been masked by the unwelcome influx of Anglicans, whose reasons to “convert” are ignoble to say the least. There could be a considerable reservoir of these men, since the C of E is positively swarming with various types of clerics for whom religion is largely a hobby: you might fancy training to be a scuba-diver, or do a part time degree at a theological college for a few months and get yourself ordained as a non-stipendiary. Then, if you get hooked on the hard stuff and don’t like women, you can come over. You’d probably fancy Westminster, where Elsie might despise you, but will still pack you off to Allen Hall for a few evening classes where you can pretend to embrace the spirit of Vatican II while setting your cap at a posting to Spanish Place or Cadogan Street. I join Pat in wishing you a fulfilled retirement, Father, and leaving them to manage their own irrelevance.

Preaching? His comment was long enough, why not hearing confessions or Extreme Unction ? No of course not it’s listen to me as I break open the Word of God , I have things to do , I want changes, I’m on your side , I want to be a lay man too. How many vocations to the priesthood has he been responsible for in all those years of priesthood , how many young men think I want to be just like him? Don’t worry it will be a lay lead Church except the laity are no longer practicing so don’t worry they are going the same way as all the clerics. The Religous Orders are dead, next will be the Diocesan priesthood. Look at the countries with high practicing congregations their number of vocations are still in dramatic decline.

Two priests celebrating three and a half Masses each hardly equates to a 40 hour week on a building site. McKeown is just a bumbling fool without integrity or vision. In the past bishops were lions. Today they are mice.

I do not know a Priest in a parish that can do a 40 hour week and if + Buckley was honest I am sure he does not only do a 40 hour week.

Priests are NOT Mass machines and if you do not know the Church has more than one Sacrament and the Priests has to deal with this.

Bishop Noel had it right in some of his Chrism Mass and that is funerals well the laity do the night before in some parishes in the UK and many getting trained up for that as there is no need for a Priest for that part know as the removal.

There is also a choices of either requiem Mass or Service as well.

in Armagh Cathedral weekday Masses I never see the Administrator (PP) or his curate Fr McHugh as it is always the retired priest and it is time + Martin asked what is going on in the Cathedral.

The situation in Turf Lodge is an absolute disgrace. People are bewildered at the lack of action to rectify a shocking situation.

Mulhall is reputed to have smirked at an irate parishioner who “threatened” him with the bishop and said, “Noel and I are very close friends. We go out to dinner regularly and I’m one of his trusted advisers”.

I have said it here before and will say it again, people need to stop being amazed at the lack of interest from bishops and face the fact the bishops are not interested. People seem to think their parish church is theirs and to expect some say over what happens in it. I have news for you, the bishops think it is theirs and don’t give a shit about you. If your name isn’t on the deeds it isn’t yours.
The only way to get any accountability from the bishop is to stop giving money. Put a note in the collection instead saying that you will not give any more money until the change you want happens. Alternatively just go to another church, but put a note addressed to the bishop in the plate there saying the same, instead of money.
What they will do is threaten to close your home church, which is why it is important to stop giving money wherever you go.
Starvation is a threat which works on anyone.

Francis should put his own house in order.

Cardinal Wuerl allowed Fr. George Zirwas to continue in ministry after learning that he had committed numerous crimes of sexual abuse. Wuerl resigned as Archbishop of Washington but Pope Francis praised him for his nobility, kept him in charge of the Archdiocese of Washington as apostolic administrator, and retained him as a member of the Congregation for Bishops.

Archbishop Mario Delpini as vicar general of the archdiocese of Milan, he moved Fr. Mauro Galli to a new parish after being informed that Galli had sexually abused a young man. Delpini admitted this in a court deposition in 2014. The Holy See was made aware of this. Pope Francis named him as Archbishop of Milan in 2017.

Bishop Juan Barros covered up the grave sexual crimes of Fr. Fernando Karadima, who was convicted of sexual abuse by a Church tribunal in 2011. Pope Francis appointed Barros bishop of Osorno in 2015 despite strong protests from the faithful and described his critics as calumniators. Bishop Barros accepted responsibility and resigned in 2018 after Pope Francis admitted he had made “serious mistakes” in dealing with his case.

Bishop Juan Carlos Maccarone was bishop of Santiago de Estero in Argentina and dean of the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University of Buenos Aires. In 2005, a video of Maccarone having sex with a taxi driver was made public. He subsequently retired as bishop. After this incident, Archbishop Bergoglio signed a declaration of solidarity with Maccarone issued by the Argentine Bishops’ conference, of which he was then the head.

Bishop Gustavo Zanchetta had been named by Pope Francis as bishop of Oran in Argentina in 2013. Zanchetta engaged in homosexual misconduct, including the sexual harassment of seminarians. Photographic evidence of this was submitted to the Holy See in 2015. In December 2017 Pope Francis named Zanchetta as assessor of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See.

Mgr. Battista Ricca was engaged in grave homosexual misbehaviour while employed in the papal nunciature in Uruguay. This included getting trapped in an elevator with a male prostitute and having to be rescued by the fire department. After these scandals had become public, Pope Francis put him in charge of his residence, the Casa Santa Marta, and named him as prelate of the Vatican Bank

Fr. Julio Grassi was convicted in 2009 of sexually abusing a teenage boy. The Argentine Bishops’ Conference under the chairmanship of Cardinal Bergoglio made great efforts to prevent Grassi’s conviction. The Bishops’ Conference commissioned a four-volume work for this purpose that slandered Grassi’s victims. Grassi stated that all through his legal process, Archbishop Bergoglio had ‘held his hand’.

Fr. Mauro Inzoli was condemned for sexual abuse to minors to reduction to the lay state by the CDF in 2012 in the first instance, but the enforcement of that sentence was suspended after he appealed, and in 2014 Pope Francis changed it into the much milder prescription to a retired life. In 2016 he was arrested and condemned by an Italian court. Only after he fell under the civil judgement did Pope Francis finally reduce him to the lay state.

What more closely concerns the successors of the Apostles concerns all those who, in various ways, assume ministries in the Church, or profess the evangelical counsels, or are called to serve the Christian People. Therefore, it is good that procedures be universally adopted to prevent and combat these crimes that betray the trust of the faithful.”

The whole farce is that under Francis it’s just words, no action. The only reason the incidence of abuse has stopped is that priests and bishops don’t fancy going to prison.

Treanor isn’t that stupid. O’Hagan is his puppy dog and Glover is his enforcer. They allow him to sit back in his palace and fiddle whilst the diocese burns. He needs to be surrounded by his yes men. At best he would have the support of 50% of his priests. A truly shockingly lazy individual. He wants to mix with the great and the good. Diocesan matters are beneath him. He’s too busy looking over his manicured lawns whilst drinking his expensive wines that Glover has acquired for him (for carrying out blessings!). This diocese is a cesspit of everything that is unholy and un christian. They really do think that they are better than the rest of us . Until parishoners stop handing over money, nothing will change. It’s one scandal after another and they just do not care. Not one bit. Not one iota. They tax the parishes to supplement their lifestyle. They have a LOT to answer for. I’m no angel and have my own faults but at least I’m not trying to deceive anyone nor am I relying on handouts from poor parishoners for a living. The lifestyles of some priests in this diocese is truly shocking. Un believably so. Extravagance gone mad

Yes, I know I and some others are going on a bit about the Galway situation and I apologise sincerely. However, this is the only forum we can engage with to get the truth out there. Kudos to Pope Francis? For what? He has done little more than Benedict did. The so-called ‘Pontifical Secret’ remains in place. And Francis’ instruction for mandatory reporting to civil authorities applies only in those countries which legally require it.
You might consider this significant, in terms of both addressing the criminality of clerical sexual abuse and of papal conscience, but it isn’t: it’s a fudge, a deceit.
Most countries around the world no longer require such reporting (and the Vatican knows it), because it was considered by their governments that the majority of citizens would be conscientious enough to report these crimibals this without legal obligation. They reckoned, however, without the lack of moral conscience in the Roman Catholic Church.

Pat you should do a blog on the enigma whereby Egan, D’Arcy, Flannery and countless others (eg the entire membership of the ACP) make statements contrary to official RC teaching day and daily and nothing happens yet you were run out of town for much milder stuff. Why eg is Liam Lawton still a priest in good standing yet he hasn’t had any diocesan appointment for decades and just sings but keeps the title Fr Liam Lawton?

I never chose to walk. Daly told me on Oct 10 1985 that he wanted me to D&C,. I didn’t leave and remained as curate in Larne. In July 1986 I heard on RTE radio news that I had been replaced in Larne. I never left. I am still in the curates residence in Larne 33 years later. I still minister from the curates house in Larne.

No matter what + Pat’s faults (and we all know there are many, as he does too), he has stood up to the bullying, lying, corrupt, powerful, and discredited bishops of D&C. None of them has been able to see him down, and he is still there. That is a powerful symbol. Long may it continue. Particularly in this day and age when we know so much more about how corrupt they were, and are. No, he is not perfect, but he is more honest, open, transparent and decent than any of them. I doubt whether + Pat is buying £60 bottles of wine, and sitting looking at his manicured lawns, done of course by the gardeners, / groundsmen in Lisbreen’s case. It is shocking just how these bishops and many of their priests live. Show me a simple, humble, holy bishop or priest in D&C ? Please !

I’m baffled by the reference in this blog to Brendan Mulhall if it’s about those Diocesan priests not fulfilling parish duties.
Whether he stays in the parochial house or not is he saying all the masses, visiting the sick and housebound, providing support to schools and groups and playing a full role in the vacariate – ie. covering for other priests when off, assisting with first penances, etc.?

I finally understand Bishop Buckley’s point. Either be the purest of the pure and live in cut off hermitage of the elect, or be a community who by day to day or even by minite are varying degrees of saints or sinners.

Oh my goodness – you obviously have little knowledge of the men you list!!!! Find out why ‘Fr’ Brankin was swiftly removed from Dunloy in 2013 and you may wish to revise your listi
