BRENDAN SMYTH’S MONASTERY TO BE DEMOLISHED BUT HIS GRAVE WILL REMAIN.

Story by Sean McMahon

The Anglocelt. Wednesday, 6th March, 2019.

Part of the former Norbertine Abbey which is soon to be demolished. The Direction for Our Times team outside (from left): Jane Gomulka, Fr Darragh Connolly, Kathryn Anne Clarke and Emma Burke.

The building formerly known as the Holy Trinity Abbey, at Kilnacrott near Ballyjamesduff – once home to the Norbertine Fathers and notorious paedophile Brendan Smyth – is to be demolished, The Anglo-Celtcan reveal.

In its place, it’s hoped to construct a new €4M ‘Faith Formation Centre’ – the headquarters of the lay Catholic movement ‘Direction for Our Times’, which has owned the property since 2012.

The graveyard on site – where beast Smyth is buried under concrete – will not be touched as part of the redevelopment project.

The presence of the grave of Brendan Smyth “does not come into the equation at all”, according to Fr Darragh Connolly, chaplain to Direction for Our Times.

“The cemetery, as it is, will be remaining as it is. It will not be disturbed or changed. There will be nothing done with it at all,” he clarified.

“This is the home of the Apostolate of the Returning King – we have owned the place since 2012 and we moved in here last summer to make it our headquarters. The plan is to replace the existing buildings with a new building that suits the work we are doing in the area of faith formation and human development,” explained Fr Connolly.

“The new centre will be specifically for the purposes of our work in giving faith formation courses,” he added.
The organisation is getting ready to submit plans to Cavan County Council for approval for the project.

It’s envisaged it will feature four classrooms, a larger general purpose area, common area, a chapel, offices with multimedia functionality and a modern kitchen and a modern sound system.

“The new centre will be designed to serve the needs of the modern church in the Kilmore Diocese and further afield,” said Fr Connolly.

The Abbey and part of the lands were purchased by Direction for Our Times for €610,000 seven years ago.

Asked how the new centre is being funded, Fr Connolly replied: “God has loads of money. He just keeps it in everyone else’s bank accounts. It will be a matter of fundraising for that. When we need something, it is because the Lord wants it and he pays for it.”

2.37: I agree with you. Catholics in their thousands voted for abortion. Shame on them. Absolute shame and they should seek God’s mercy. Many of them rejoiced with laughter and delight on the day of the passing of the referendum. Those Catholics who voted for the murder of innocent babies are disgusting.

Fuck, another load of nutters moving in ! This Anne woman, to whom the Lord is supposed to have spoken. Really ! Another fantasist. How come these groups crop up and are able to swindle money out of people ? Complete nonsense. Absolute nutters.
+ Pat, you are mainstream and sane compare to this lot ! Keep up the good work.

These O Praems are just a fat, lardy, red faced bunch who like to dress up. What a crew ! Sadly, increasingly Bishops, at least in England, are handing over places to groups like this simply because they can fill them with piggy faced young men who are running from the world. And from women as well.
These outposts of frilly so called orthodoxy are not where the Universal Church is at ! Not the Church I belong to, anyhow.

Like

Quite so, the O. Praems in England are as you describe, and as Anglo-Catholics used to do, spend their time traveling the country attending each other’s Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form. The usual circuit is Farnborough Abbey, the northern “shrines” and the Oratories, particularly Oxford, where Daniel is – or rather was since nobody knows where he is – quite pally with them. Piggy faced young men made me laugh – you are awful!

It’s the importing of Anglo-Catholic campery I object to – the self-contained little world, which the late Father Kenneth Leech described as “lace, gin and back-biting”.

Well, they couldn’t hack St Chad’s, Cheetham Hill, Manchester, which, like Holy Name, had to be rescued by the legendary Ray Matus. Maybe Strangeways prison across the road made them uneasy.

9.31: You need to go back to school to learn RESPECT, DECENCY, TRUTH, TOLERANCE, HUMANITY and all other good virtues. Your ignorant comments reflects your little, thwarted and malignant brain. If you are dissatisfied with present Catholicism, find your way to Larne. You’ll have “all” you’re looking for in this outfit where you can flow whichever way you want and do whatever you like. So, go and set yourself free!! And, hopefully you’ll grow out of your crappy, infantile nonsense.

The O. Praems agreed in the UK have a ministry of dressing up. +Pat you should take a while to look at the connection with these and Ealing Abbey. Sometimes the apple does fall to fat from the tree with their history with Smyth

And you think Norbertines and other religious orders and dioceses are not flowing whatever way they want or not doing what they like?

Anne looks composed to me. A true servant of God I expect. Isn’t this what the blog testifies to every day – the need for great change.

11.52 does God not speak to you everyday? Would you like to share what he says? At least Anne has the courage to do that. Connolly can have his sideshow. We can put up with that.

Auld Maggie has definitely been a lot quieter.

In fact, some of us were getting real worried and were even going to venture out to ye olde Carta place out in Slimey Swamp up yonder near Crazy Creek.

I know it’s foolhardy but there was a bunch of us and we were going fortified with pitchforks and flaming torches. It’s the auld Maw Carta we were mostly concerned about. That old Still could have blown. It’s been in a precarious state for years and what with it going night and day and all.

Anyhow looks like auld Mags was just hibernating for a few days like a grumpy old bear. So we’re saving ourselves a trip. Y’awl come back now.

Magna darling, isn’t it wonderful to see people were worried about me? Don’t worry darling, I won’t tell them you were in hospital again

2.40. He dropped the Deacon title as he was given orders to by the Bishop. He is very outspoken and critical of the RC Church but still wants to be part of it. He would love to be a Bishop himself. Double standards.

Similar shenanigans in Glasgow. A certain Priest located on the South side is a cockoholic and has shagged his way through his Ministry under the noses of 3 Archbishops who all turn a blind eye. In fairness, he is a decent bloke, but why not just jack in instead of living a lie? Maybe open Oratory Society Scotland branch?

Like

Oh the Scots have infiltrated the blog again. Absolutely rubbish. Glasgow doesn’t tolerate such behaviour.

Terry you must be Blind everyone knows about these priests who go to the Pipework Sauna near the cathedral and HQ for the Archdiocese.
yYs we all know them but there is an Archbishop not fit for the job and frightened to challenge them..
Some are c/o diocesan Offices others are in parishes.
They will be safe for the next seven years while + Philip is in charge health permitting.
I think you are unfair on the Cardinal as he would not allow that but you are correct about + Mario and + Philip turning a blind eye and promoting some of them.

Pat, you’re a critic of the late Cardinal Desmond Connel but will you at least acknowledge that it was he who lifted the suspension of your friend, Fr Michael Keane after 23 years in the wilderness?

I did not know that and gice him credit for it. Michael suffered a great injustice at the hands of archbishops Cunnane and Ryan. He never receiced an apology, not even at hus funeral 😦

Bishop Walsh apologised at a concelebrated Mass with Fr Keane. Pat, I remember you, Fr Keane and others standing at the castle outside the gates of Maynooth. The deans told us that under no circumstances were any of the sems to approach or talk to your group. One of the Tuam sems defied the ruling and had a nice chat with Fr Keane. I think Fr Keane should get a blog post from you, Pat.

Pat. I am a new follower of your blog. Love it. Genuine question – did you make peace with Cardinal Daly before he died? Did you go to his funeral Mass? Do you visit his grave? I know you and he had a tiff or two, but he also did good works. Do you pray for him? God bless.

Like

For a long time I could not pray for him. Then one time during Mass I knew I was wrong and started. He hurt me and changed the course of my life. But I was wrong to nurse my anger.

Like

He, as the Cardinal Archbishop of Armagh should have broken the ice, invited you round, not one- to-one cos that could be false and intimidating, but had a meal, coffee, go for a walk, have a fun gathering of known friends. It’s what any sensible employer would do.

Like

Had he invited me I would have readily gone. I wrote several letters asking for reconciliation. He never replied.

Like

Lovely comment by you, Bishop Patrick about your prayers for Cardinal Daly who disgracefully wanted you put on the streets. I’m sorry you did not meet Cahal before he died. It would surely have been healing to both of you.

I have a few enemies who have made my life much worse and I find it hard to forgive or pray for them. I hope that all people get a chance to reconcile before it’s over. It’s one of the reasons I now as a father never go to bed in the home until I’ve made sure that an angry row is at least acknowledged if not fixed.

Like

It’s a real spiritual exercise to pray for those you dislike and especially for those who have harmed you. I do it very much bit by bit.

There needs to be reconciliation between D. Martin and Byrne. Pat can you be the middle man? Life is too short.

I would be very surprised if Diarmuid had treated MB in any wrong way. I think Diarmuid cares about MB.

Like

The truth is very different Pat. MB has been cast out. DM has treated him very badly and has only protected himself. There has been no support (no apartment, pay etc) The priests of the diocese are very upset and want new leadership. MB is another victim just like you.

Like

I’m very surprised to hear that. Is MB not preparing to be chaplain in a Dublin hospital. I thought Diarmuid was supporting him. Is he not living in a Dublin presbytery?

Like

Byrne needs to get on with his life as a layman. There is no place for him as an ordained minister of the Church.
And you, 8:39pm, need to desist from your mischief making. Byrne is the architect of his own misfortune.
MB should never have passed initial psychological assessment and the fact that he progressed as far as diaconate is an utter indictment of the formation process in Maynooth as totally unfit for purpose.
Most priests in Dublin are relieved that DM had the gumption in this instance to listen to reason and to NOT ordain this totally unsuitable and dysfunctional individual. The Church in Dublin has had a narrow escape!
The only ones “upset” are you, 8:39pm, and your ilk who yourselves are a disgrace to the priesthood.

Stephen @ 8.33. The world is very different now. Winning wouldn’t stand for it, but Conti and big Phil have no choice as who do they replace them with? The current Chancellor is trying to keep them all out of trouble and helps look after the gay clergy. Most are at least not shouting about who they are banging these days.

Glasgow/Motherwell are a mess by the sound of it. What happened to Frs Friel, Doherty and Gannon and others who are c/o Diocesan Offices? What happened to the Motherwell chap suspended by Bishop Devine? I see Fr Roonie is now married to a man and in independent Ministry? Do the Priests really still hang about the sauna? If that Fr Friel does, I’d be down like a shot. Do the Priests in the Cathedral still refuse absolution to the gays despite the majority
of their brothers being homosexual? Is the Dean of the Cathedral who walked out last year to marry married yet? Does he have a love child to someone else? Is the Priest who got blackmailed by the rent boy in Kelvingrove Park still active? Is the retired Priest who likes to rub the boys tummy’s when he speaks to them still supplying? We could write a book or start up our own blog in Scotland!

Like

Friel is in Switzerland, Gannon made a PP by + Philip, Doherty retired. Yes Tom Winning would have had them all out and Glasgow has about 6 c/o diocesan offices, Motherwell has about four and Paisley two.
+Philip needs to act and put them out Cathedral Dean is in his mothers house left to him but seems neighbours not happy and in Paisley it seems one of them has moved in with their partner and in Motherwell the Despard situation with Joe Toal is still on going but the guy innocently suspended by Devine 8 years ago is still appealing it.
I am not sure about the Cathedral clergy I thought one of them would be a “Sister” to the gays and it seems yes still clergy going to the Sauna.
No Leadership in Scotland and I thought + Keenan would have but his Synod cost a fortune and a flop nothing has come out of it as he was expecting 3 or 4 parish to amalgamate but was dreaming.
The Chancellor should be the man he is and leave he is too cushy over in that South Side but Glasgow will be stale till new Archbishop arrives in 2026

Like

Exactly. We just have to take what we can get these days, so it’s a toss up between the queens, ex Anglicans and the type of female who is hell bent on getting herself ordained. Incidentally anybody know what relations were like between Winning and O’Brien?

Like

There were deaconesses who assisted women with their clothing at a time of many adult conversions and when baptism by total immersion was the norm. But they were not ordained and were not in Holy Orders.

The English text above each video captures what he said. They, for their own reasons, didn’t translate it when he said “if the Lord did not want the Ministry of women, we cannot go there” (first video) and in the second video, again not in the English text he said it was a matter of dogma. Hence the cutaway to get reaction shots of the nuns in the audience.

8.57: You are telling LIES. You must have an axe to grind with Archbishop Martin. You are not up to speed with events. I am no great admirer of DM: I respect him. I do not know MB personally but you are lying re: care of MB. Lying and being very mischievious. Go and do your research. As for priests in Dublin Diocese being upset over treatment of MB – you are lying. Go back to your cave. MB doesn’t feature in any conversations except on this blog. You obviously are not a Dublin Diocesan priest! You fool….Apart from your lying, you and everyone else should allow MB to get on with his life.

If Dublin priests are not talking about Michael Byrne, they jolly well should be, since he epitomizes the pickle the Church has been in for decades: what to do with bishops, priests and deacons who are manifestly unfit for ministry. The solution has been to sweep it all under the carpet which is what you appear to be advocating. And why couldn’t Brendan Comiskey stand up to that vile character Sean Fortune?

Like

8.57: Can I suggest that you discover the truth before you pronounce on Diarmuid Martin and M. Byrne. You are a liar. You are totally wro g in your assessment. Pat is right, DM is being very kind to MB. You, malcontent idiot, get your facts right.

Why are you bringing it up re Fr Smyth?
He reminded me of Fr Fortune whom i met in a wedding years even the locals knew and advised me to steer away from him. Cos bishop couldn’t do anything as regards to removing him.
What’s the difference between a Catholic and Roman catholic? Where will i go ?
Pope F is quite dodgy and not honest cos he released a policy as regards to sex abuse but it doesnt refer it to the civil authorities. It’s all hush hush keeping in the house.

Roman Catholic church- why call roman? Peter was never in Rome.
The more i see of the RCC they are getting battered re release of today sexual abuse policy- keeping in the house!!!!!
Quite simply cant trust that RCC. If all women left as they would be left standing with no support. Its’ the women who propped up RCC all the way still they are predominantly male oriented church.

Why are you bringing it up Fr Smyth? His eyes tells more about the church itself.
It reminded me of Fr Fortune whom i unfortunately met in a wedding years ago. Even the locals knew it and advised me to steer away from him. Then bishop of Ferns couldn’t remove that priest.
What’s the difference between a catholic and Roman Catholic? where will i go? Could i defect ? Many questions?

Like

Please defect to the Anglicans. The Lord loves a cheerful giver, so don’t stay in the Church if it harms your faith or if you remain and are a moaner like Flannery & D’Arcy and as such you bring down the faith levels in other members of the Church.

Like

Who is this character who keeps suggesting we defect to the Anglicans? They may not be a problem in Ireland but it is the Anglicans defecting to us I object to with their campery and misogyny and propensity to do whatever they damn well like. Look at Father John Hunwicke for example: for most of his life he pretended to be a Catholic priest in the C of E; finally he gets some bishop ( reluctantly ) to ordain him; and now he lives comfortably off his C of E pension slagging off the Catholic Church. His latest stunt is to accuse the Pope of heresy!

Like

If what @8:57pm is saying is true (and I suspect he is someone yanking Pat Buckley’s chain), then +DM is acting absolutely correctly.
MB is no “victim”. He is a dangerous charlatan and to allow him to progress to priestly ordination would do untold harm to the Church in Dublin and it’s parish communities.
