Pat, your “now we’re now at payback time” is a rather vengeful, scornful and misattributed phrase. We are at a time of disclosure, of discovery and if justice. Wherever institutions of any kind are left to monitor themselves and devise their own self governing and self serving rules, undoubtedly there will be abuse, misdeeds, criminal activity and corruption. All institutions, civil and religious, have been found out. This will ultimately be for the better but only if, where fraud and criminal abuse is uncovered, the perpetrators are brought to full
justice and that victims/survivors are truly cared for without having to go through the courts in an adversarial way. Countries which were once very Catholic and almost untouchable are now being publicly shamed to admitting much criminal sexual behaviour among its clergy. Any abuse is utterly unacceptable. While you gleefully list countries where the catholic church is losing its credibility and moral integrity because of sexual abuse scandals, can we hope and pray that somewhere out of this awful death, sinfulness and criminal wrong, a new Church mught emerge that is CHRISTIAN – i. e. – TRULY CHRIST LIKE. For too long we’ve talked about “the church” and not about CHRIST. Let us not forget too that amidst all this rottenness and corruption there are good people who try their utmost to be faithful to God and who seek to be CHRIST for others and who retain their integrity in Christ.
As long as any renewed church contains a clerical hierarchy, these abuses will be renewed, too.
It must be clearly understood, with absolutely no equivocation or ambiguity, that the clergy, especially its hierarchical structure, is the cause of this cankerous evil in the Church. Not Satan, not gay priests, not so-called ‘modernism’, not Vat II, but self-regarding, self-aggrandising personalities and the systemic injustice they built into their governance of the institution.
Only a few days ago, we were asked whether Roman Catholic priesthood should be abolished. As currently constituted, this priesthood is as incapable of reform as the Church is of policing itself. Why? Because these morally foul men do not want reform, such is their sense of privilge, entitlement, and self-conception.
This w***emongering institution of priesthood should be dragged through the gutters of Rome and ignominiuosly drowned in the Tiber. Any thought of ecclesial renewal can only follow this.😆
I am not at all surprised that the dam has broken in Poland. As it will all over the world. We have already seen the truth about the abusive clerical and hierarchical Church in Ireland, the UK, throughout Europe, in the US and in South America. What remains now is for the same truth to emerge from some. of the southern cone countries, especially in Africa. Abuse of all kinds, including corruption and collusion, is rife, and will put everything else in to the shade.
What is at the root of all these scandals ? Clericalism, dysfunction, arrogance, impunity etc. etc. on the part of the clerical caste and hierarchy, and a muted response from the laity who were muzzled in to being silent for so long. We have heard and seen it all before and we know what the root causes of the dysfunction and sin are. Some brave laity, especially among victims, have spoken out. But, interestingly, it appears that now the strongest voices to call out the evil within the Church are coming from outside the Church, from secular and state authorities, who have evidently decided that self-regulation by the Church is not possible, and so they have taken up the responsibility of ensuring that the truth be uncovered and the Church made to address these issues and come up with a plan for the future. It is highly likely that in some jurisdictions, for example in the US, the Church itself could be seen as a criminal organization which perpetuates crime, and action will be taken against it as an institution and organization. The Church is beginning to be viewed as a kind of religious Mafia, which the state has to deal with. These are serious times, when something that purports to be for good, namely the Church, is deemed to be an instrument of evil, and has to be dealt with by outside secular agencies.
Our bishops and priests over the decades have brought this on to themselves and on the Church by their behaviour, their arrogance, their carelessness, their looking the other way, their collusion, their over arching concern to protect the Church and themselves from any scandal. While the vulnerable suffered. Shame on them. They will bleat about what is currently happening, and shed false tears, and say sorry, but they are incapable of stemming the flow of evil, and so must be sidestepped and others must take on the responsibility of ensuring that the festering evil in the Church comes to an end.
In Poland there will be a right wing backlash against criticism of a Church that is as much about nationalism as it is about religion, but as the stories unfold about the cess pit of evil amongst its priests and bishops, the tide will turn and people will see the Church for the evil that it has inflicted on others, especially upon the most vulnerable. As in Ireland, the Church will cease to be associated with the nation and the people, who will find alternative structures and movements with which to identify and to give them significance. There is an inevitable narrative as to how this will play out in Poland, just as it has already played out in the US, in Western Europe, and will eventually play out in the southern cone countries and in Africa. The Church will be severely diminished, its priests and bishops ignored as irrelevant to the national debate. This is the result of their own calculating actions and inaction over decades. It is their fault. So, please don’t let us hear them trying to pass the blame on to bad apples, on to the victims, on to the gays, on to the devil, on to the secular world…….IT IS ALL DOWN TO THEM, THE CLERICAL HIERARCHICAL CLASS THAT HAS LAUDED IT OVER US FOR TOO LONG.
Pat, have you see that Francis has rebuked the Italian Episcopal Conference for their foot dragging on reducing the number of dioceses (which is also a priority in Ireland).
On the issues of the massive and disproportionate number of dioceses in the territory, the president of CEI, Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, said that the local church is entirely committed to answering the pope’s demands, even if it will be “a really long journey.”
“There are many challenges,” he said, “because no diocese wants to give up the figure of the bishop, which would give the impression of decay in the social context.”
And it’s got nearly 900 thumbs up but only nearly 300 thumbs down. The mantilla brigade are going to have to face the fact that the ‘few rotten apples’ have changed how the rest of the world thinks of their beloved priests for ever.

I am a prominent member of the Catholic Church in Scotland. Only minor issues here. 99% of clergy are good holy men, our Dioceses are affluent, our Bishops are all good men and although we are a little short on vocations, no issues here. LAY OFF 🏴

Would it be possible for us to find out what Irish diocese have students training currently , when was the last ordinations for those without students. I’m thinking two weeks ago a western diocese collected money but they have no students where is the money going ?
Rory Well spotted but if you had been at Holy Mass you would have heard the statements from the Archbishops and Bishops.
In the archdiocese of Dublin they announced that there is enough money in the Vocations / Seminarian fund for Five years so the collection will not be for Students.
However as the church is changing and more lay involvement the collections would be used to train the lay people.
And most dioceses have said like wise.
Here is information for you Rory ALL collections are audited by external accountants and furthermore they MUST be approved by the Charity Regulators.
