LIBERIAN ARCHBISHOP AND BISHOP ABUSED SEMINARIAN/PRIEST OVER 14 YEAR PERIOD.

ACCUSED ZIEGLER – PUBLICLY CONDEMNS HOMOSEXUALITY

ROME – Last week representatives of the Liberian bishops’ conference travelled to the Vatican to address accusations from a local priest that two of the country’s bishops were guilty of soliciting him for sex.
Bishop Anthony Borwah, President of the Liberia Bishops’ Conference, traveled to Rome to meet with Vatican officials after Father Gabriel Sawyer, a parish priest from Monrovia, raised accusations against the current Archbishop Lewis Zeigler, who heads the archdiocese, and against Bishop Andrew Karnley of Cape Palmas – located on Liberia’s southern coast – of sexual advances and abuses of power.
Reportedly accompanying Borwah to the Vatican were Father Dennis Cephus Nimene, secretary of the bishops’ conference and Archbishop Dagoberto Campos Salas, Vatican envoy to Liberia.

ACCUSED KARNLEY – PUBLICLY CONDEMNS HOMOSEXUALITY

In a lengthy 17-page August 2018 letter to Campos Salas, Sawyer said that when he was in seminary in Monrovia in 1997, Karnley, who was vocations director at the time, had made inappropriate advances and attempted to have sex with him while on trips to say Mass outside of the seminary.
Sawyer alleges that after refusing, Karnley threatened to block his ordination to the priesthood and made his life both pre- and post-ordination difficult. When Zeigler was named archbishop of Monrovia in 2011, Sawyer said he also made sexual advances, and harassed him after he resisted.

ACCUSER – FATHER SAWYER

According to Sawyer, the alleged abuses went on for some 14 years. In his letter, published on the Liberian news site Front Page Africa, the priest said he was “constantly and systematically molested” by Karnley and Zeigler, and that he has suffered numerous psychological and mental molestations “as a result of my refusal to have sexual intercourse.”
Despite his alleged abuse and mistreatment in seminary, Sawyer said he “kept quiet in order to save my vocation.”
“This is the honourable thing any Seminarian and even most priests will choose to do. Because of this culture of threats and intimidation from some church leaders in Liberia and Africa at large we will choose to be quiet,” he said, adding that “this culture of silence in the face of molestation cut across all facets of our society and it is prevalent most especially in the local Liberian church.”
Sawyer in his letter said he believed the mistreatment and intimidation would end once he was ordained, however, he said Karnley continued to make his priestly life difficult, threatening to “torture” him until he left the priesthood.
Among the alleged retaliations Sawyer said he suffered were the refusal to give him a stipend, forcing him to at times beg friends and fellow priests for food; and being accused of having inappropriate relationships with women and of political campaigning.

He said he was also accused of financial misdealing at one of his parishes and the attached school after refusing advances from Zeigler and was not assigned to parishes for long periods of time.
“I was so frustrated with his continuous violation of my dignity and personality,” he said in the letter. “I was stabbed in the back by the Bishop who should be the shepherd of all the priests. I felt so hurt, and it really destroyed my ability to work hard for God.”

Sawyer said he continued to be blocked and mistreated as a priest, often being removed from parishes without reason and assigned as an associate pastor at other churches, where he was required to report to men who had previously been classmates in seminary.
He said he was also mistreated by Zeigler during a study trip to the UK, asserting that the archbishop refused to give him funds for necessary testing, transport, living costs and winter clothing, forcing him to “beg” for money from friends.
“These events had brought me untold sufferings and mental disorders. These experiences from the bishop of the Archdiocese of Monrovia had caused me serious medical conditions and psychological breakdown,” he said, explaining that he at times allegedly falls into a state of paralysis “due to the intense trauma I have suffered from bishops Zeigler and Karnley.”
He said he suffers from acute gastrointestinal disorder, and that after a doctor requested that he travel to Ghana for treatment, Zeigler refused to grant permission.
Sawyer insisted that he was innocent, telling Campos Salas to visit his former parishes, because “My impeccable legacies are there.”
“There is nothing dishonorable that I have done to be treated rudely and without respect. Hence to be treated in this way by these two bishops is unjust, undignified and something needs to be done immediately before someone gets hurt,” he said, asking Campos Salas to intercede for him in obtaining financial support for medical care and for an investigation to be launched, keeping his name anonymous.
The Vatican is reportedly looking into the case, however, in recent weeks local media have raised questions about the credibility of Sawyer’s testimony, noting the fact he has left active ministry to marry a woman without requesting permission to leave the clerical state.
For his part, Karnley hit back against the allegations of abuse, insisting that they are false.
“It is without a shadow of doubt that I term the accusation as a blatant lie and malicious falsehood,” he said in the statement published in African media May 31.
Karnley said the allegations are “an invention of the mind of Fr. Sawyer and a calculated move by him to assassinate my character and tarnish the image of the Catholic Church in Liberia. At no time or in any place have I ever sexually harassed and abused him…NEVER EVER!”
“I categorically deny and challenge the accusation,” he said, insisting that Sawyer has never faced the difficulties he claims are the basis for his “arbitrary abandonment of his priestly life and discipline.”
“This claim is a falsehood with an ulterior motive and should be called into question and investigated,” Karnley said, praying that God would “expose and bring into the light of day this lie and falsehood against me,” and thanking those who have voiced their support.

Another country joins the RC Abuse Stakes!

And in Africa!

The African abuse story is just beginning. It will be vast – with internatioal missionaries abusing boys, girls, women and men and maybe the odd animal.

Dont laugh! I know an Irish PP who abused his Golden Retriever!

Apparently Fr. Sawyer fell in love with a woman and is not currently in ministry.

The bishops who abused him didn’t realise he was a hetero.

It also shows that homosexuality happens in Africa – in spite the denials of African governments.

The African problem of sexual abuse will be harrowing as it has been and continues to be in Western churches. We must believe victims. It will be devastating for many considering the African attitude towards homosexuality and gay people. When the church stories are unleashed they will implicate other professions of African society.

So many of the Bishops are so far removed from
the ordinary people , and even their clergy they think they can get
away with anything –
Not only that in reality in most Diocese today such as the one I belong to
Bishop does not need to be a full time job especially when the majority
of Priests are responsible for more than one parish . Bishop Doyle for
example could easily have run a small parish the last years , and done the
work of a Bishop . See his diary on the Northampton Diocese web site-
That does not justify having a full time Bishop when we are short of active
Priests in the Diocese .

Thank you very much, Father, for identifying your provenance, which I understand in the current climate is as far as you can go. I am increasingly unhappy about the fact that nearly all postings are anonymous: Tom Wood is one of the very few with the courage to identify himself. Yet given the levels of vituperation expressed on this blog – let alone the ones Pat does not publish – there is an understandable wariness. Following the comment yesterday about there being two main camps of bloggers, I think it would be good if we all worked to foster trust and respectfulness – not to say common courtesy – in our postings. Some can be highly amusing but they should not cruel or insulting. It would be a pity if Pat had to exercise more censorship, but let’s cut the snide remarks, innuendos and speculations. Is that too much to ask?

9.40: The request you make has been asked of Pat manybtimed before. He is the one who should lead by example but sadly, he is the one who initiates, facilitates and incites much venomous, ignorant, semi pornigraphic and hate language. There is rarely any neaningful dialogue to effect real, genuine renewal. The context of this blog is to humiliate, belittle, harrass and abuse those already on the ground. Shamefully. This blog does not inspire Christ-like-living.

But most of these Christ-betrarers would rather their, er, activities could remain below board, just like the good old days. They are not inured to criticism, and they don’t like it. Which is almost certainly why some of them here are griping against the openness of this blog.
They HATE the light, these Christ-betrayers, and would have it snuffed out…if they could.

1.02: I presume by “them” you mean African priests!! Racist and outrageous. I am surprised Pat allows this racism and filth. Or should I be surprised? Perhaps not.

Liked by 1 person

Again, why am I not surprised at this ?! Throughout Africa abuse and corruption of every kind is alive and kicking in the Church, even more widespread and deep than has been revealed in the West. The Church and priesthood has always been seen as a career path in African Churches, and brings with it great privilege, status and material wealth for the man himself and his family. They are brought up with a sense of entitlement and arrogance and being untouchable, and feel that they are able to pretty much do what they want with no prospect of recrimination. Sounds familiar…? In many parishes where African priests have been imported in to parishes here, their attitude of “Father knows best” is alive and kicking. I note that + Vincent has refused some religious orders in his diocese from handing over their parishes run by the order to priests from their African provinces. He knows that within a few years these guys will have sold the title deeds from under him if they are given the chance ! So, there is a tsunami of abuse and corruption to come out of the Church in Africa. We can only blame ourselves, because we sent priests out there to evangelise, and they took with them the attitudes of clericalism and hierarchy and entitlement and corruption and abuse. The African clergy were good students and learned the lessons well ! Here is the proof.

Like

Anon @ 8:30, while inclined to agree with you about levels of corruption in Africa I wonder if it is actually higher or just more open and blatant than that seen elsewhere. Either way, the clerical path has been seen there, as in bygone Ireland, as the road to status and preferment.

What about the missionaries who were up to all sorts of no good during their time on the missions ? There was a great deal went on, taking advantage of their elevated status and enjoying whatever they wanted, sexually abusing boys and girls around them. For the most part, they are pretty immune to any comeback, mostly because they are back home now and out of any jurisdiction where they got up to these things, but also because it would be very hard for the people they abused to pursue any complaint. I’m sure there are lots of old missionaries being cared for in their retirement communities who have some shady secrets that they are glad will not come out. Not all, by any means, but a significant number none the less. Their missionary orders and the Church does not really want to disturb this hornets’ nest of trouble, and so don’t ask too many questions. Back in the missionary lands, the procedures, processes and mechanisms for getting anything done are simply not there, so there is no realistic prospect of this stuff being addressed. If you believe in a final judgement, then I guess that is the place where this stuff will finally get sorted out.

There is a lot of racism being expressed through some comments today. This is totally unacceptable. Just wondering if Pat has any African members in the Oratory? And does he approve of the biased, judgmental and prejudiced comments of today. What’s being said is African = trouble and abuse. That’s outrageous.

We have no African members at present but we have other nationalites from places like Asia.

I think that all racism is wrong.

11.43 I think you can find all countries on the corruption index on the web. A few years ago I was surprised to find that Italy was more corrupt than Turkey. Canada came out of it very well. You can look up all the countries all over the world and make up your own mind.

Where African Clergy have come over to European Diocese
leaving aside money issues it has not on the
whole been successful as there have been problems of integration
for the Clergy and the people receiving them. Cultural differences
lead to differences in understanding , and experiences of level of
involvement in a parish etc
Would not a better way be forward to adopt what happens in the East
sometimes that if a parish had no priest sometimes a Bishop would go to
the parish , consult people , and see if there was a suitable candidate
he could ordain – Candidate would be ordained , and sent to monastery for a very short , but intensive course .

This seems an excellent plan. The only difficulty would be finding a monastery where he could learn about something more ministry-focused than gay sex.

I thought what 2:45 said. I think 11:43 would be well advised to look at statistics for corruption, rape and other crimes in African countries. It is not being racist to say that their own people identify corruption as an endemic problem and stats for reported crimes speak for themselves.

Anon@ 11:43 disputes that “African equals trouble and abuse” by regarding this as an “outrageous” claim. He/she therefore appears to have little knowledge of the evidence, or chooses to disregard it.

+ Vincent is an ambitious chap, so I would not be so sure that he isn’t still thinking he could be in line if Francis falls off his perch. He could really eat humble pie and say all the right things about victims and being truly penitent for his omissions and the sins of his priests. That might make IICSA go away, and his kite could still fly. I had thought the stuffing had been knocked out of him, but he looks as though he is a bit on a rebound and looking a bit more like his old self recently. Whatever happens to him, who goes to Westminster when he is gone, either to Rome (in white or cardinal’s red), or retires completely, or croaks (no signs of that) ? Longley of Birmingham ? Stock of Leeds ? Gauleiter Arnold of Salford ? Any other contenders ? Surely not that oaf up in Liverpool ! Anyhow, whoever it might be, the gloss and glamour of wearing red in Westminster has surely rubbed off, and for whoever takes over it is going to be a vale of tears with lots of shovelling shit in the vineyard of the Lord. Whoever would want it ? But many still do.

Glasgow friends. What is going on? The VG resigned, the Archbishop puts a statement out a week later thanking his “friend”, the Chancellor is rumoured to be jacking in too, all of the gay network had a meeting recently to discuss tactics incase any of them are exposed, the Priest who had the vibrator up his rear on the altar is still around, one Priest is still having an openly gay relationship with a another, morale is at an all time low, the Arch refuses to close Parishes – instead elderly Priests are left to manage several poorly attended Parishes, etc etc. Paisley and Motherwell are just as bad. I am a Parish Priest in Archdiocese of Glasgow. The VG Paul Conroy resigned as he held the post for 7 years and he is tired. No scandal. The Chancellor Paul Murray is not resigning or leaving Ministry, so stop the hurtful comments on here. There is no gay network of Priests. Nothing like this goes on anymore. The Archbishop is a lovely and gentle man. He hasn’t wanted to close Parishes before now as he doesn’t want to hurt his people. He is slowly starting to though. No scandal here but prayers are appreciated.God bless.

7.33: Kieran I don’t dispute my observation at 11.43 that the suggestion being proclaimed by many commentators is that being an African priest automatically equates to being “troublesome and abusive”. I’ve heard this said by many Irish and I believe it to be a promotion of unacceptable racism. Some African countries are full of corruption and abusive practices but that doesn’t give us permission to paint all their citizens with the same brush. Racism and prejudice are horrible abuses which crush very vulnerable people and both are morally reprehensible. Neither should be tolerated on this blog.

I recently came across your blog, I was actually appalled by what I read – the homophobic comments by contributors, mainly about Priests is just unacceptable and archaic to say the least. Then further comments being made about ‘being true Catholic by harking back to the good old days of the Latin Mass’ – what planet are they on? Many of the blogs are full of inaccuracies and false claims which cannot be substantiated.
As a practicing Catholic myself, I am actually appalled and outraged by the comments and claims your blog makes. I find the homophobic comments particularly concerning especially as you claim to be Catholic and gay yourself – does not the Catholic faith say that all people are made in God’s image and likeness, and all people are to be respected? I cannot consider that you and the people promoting this kind of bigotry, narrow-mindedness and prejudice can call yourselves Catholics, your views are an embarrassment to the Catholic faith and bring great shame on the faith.
I will be referring your blog to the appropriate authorities and recommending that it be shut down on grounds of homophobic prejudice and inflammatory language to incite hatred of RC of Priests. This is just unacceptable in the 21st Century.

9.33: Welcome to the blog which as you rightly observe promotes hatred of and continuous vitriol against Catholic clergy. All wrongs and criminal behaviour has to be acknowledged but the personalised bigotry and hatred expressed about named individuals crosses many boundaries. Pat doesn’t care who he hurts, offends or belittles. It’s his only motivation and is a man full of vindictive vengeance since he rejected the Catholic Church many years ago. He needs our prayers.

I agree that the gratuitous references to queers and such like are pointless and offensive, and I wish Pat would block them, as sometimes an entire day is given over to trading insults. However, if you are, as you claim, new to the blog, you will find that the tone is not generally anti-gay at all. Many gay people contribute because they find the hypocrisy of a clerical establishment which teaches that homosexuality is “intrinsically disordered” and never miss an opportunity to protest and attempt to block ( always, thank God, unsuccessfully ) equal rights legislation is itself almost entirely made up of gay men – for many of whom celibacy is – to put it mildly – problematic. This blog exists to give an opportunity for whistle- blowing, which is in the public interest. Without it – ie whistleblowing in general and not just this blog – we would never have had disclosure in Boston ( viz. Boston Globe ), various reports in Ireland, IICSA and so on all over the world. What is it exactly you will be requiring the appropriate authorities to suppress? Truth? Accountability?

Liked by 1 person

A bit rich for any Catholic to complain about homophobic prejudice unless he means within the Church. I’m pretty convinced the writer is a priest. Maybe no bad thing if he gets “the appropriate authorities” ( note the sense of entitlement) to close the blog down. Then we can get down to the serious business of holding the Church to accountability rather than spreading tittle tattle. Jonathan West for example did great work re Ealing and this led to IILCSA investigating Downside, Ampleforth, Birmingham and so on. Maybe creating a properly documented pool of information – cp. the invaluable work of the late Richard Sipe in USA – is a service we can perform. I would still defend this blog, despite its human flaws, as a good thing and in the public interest – which is what “the appropriate authorities” will care about more than covering up flaws in the clergy.
