A child abuse inquiry witness has told how he was raped by priests during “satanic” drink-fuelled sex parties.
Dave Sharp also described a catalogue of sexual, physical and emotional violence at St Ninian’s in Falkland, Fife, between 1971 and 1975.
Mr Sharp, from Glasgow, said the abuse had left him with “lifelong trauma”.
The independent Scottish Child Abuse inquiry is looking in detail at historical abuse of children in residential care.
Mr Sharp urged inquiry chairwoman Lady Smith, to piece together the “jigsaw” of victims’ accounts and called for a “national discussion” on the subject.
The 60-year-old, who has waived his right to anonymity, was put into care after his mother died when he was aged one.
Tied up

He stayed in several institutions before going to the Catholic-run care home in Fife.
He told how he was groomed by one of the religious brothers, who would tell him he loved him, which “no-one had ever done” before.
The inquiry heard the then-12-year-old was later raped.
Most of the abuse was said to have taken place in the shower rooms, where the witness would be made to stand in the dark through the night as a punishment.
One attack came after he had asked about the whereabouts of a friend who had disappeared. It was later discovered the boy had taken his own life.
Mr Sharp said he was taken to the shower room by a drunken religious brother, tied-up and gagged.
The inquiry is being chaired by Lady Smith
The witness claimed he was hung by a cord, threatened with murder if he spoke out and was then raped.
He added: “It was from that day everything I did was under his complete and utter control.”
The inquiry heard “two or three” boys were trafficked around Scotland and Ireland at a time to be used in drink-fuelled sex parties, which he described as “satanic”.
One occasion in Ireland was said to have involved 10 men taking turns to rape the boys.
It was heard priests were among those involved and incidents took place over the duration of his time at St Ninian’s, which was run by religious order the Christian Brothers.
He left the home aged 16 without “any memory other than continually being abused”.
Drug addiction
It was then that he found out he had a family, but he did not settle and became dependent on drugs and alcohol.
He said he struggled with a “£100-a-day” habit for up to 25 years and attempted to kill himself on numerous occasions.
Mr Sharp was married for five weeks during this period, until his wife died of natural causes.
This led to him having a “breakdown” and he was taken into hospital care, where he found religion and decided to “turn his life around”.
The inquiry, before Lady Smith, continues.

PAT SAYS

It is.not surprising that child sexual abuse and Satanism are connectrd.

The sbuse of a child is the essence of evil.

I once talked to a semnarian, later ordained, who was invited to a Black Mass in the bowels of the Vatican.

There were 3 chalices on the altar – one containing human blood, one containing human urine and one containing semen.

We know Jesus Christ is among the People of God.

Satan is in charge of the institution.

Another “isolated incident” or “these things happen everywhere” and in most cases priests and religious do wonderful work? We await the findings of the commission on this case before they move on to the next, and then the next.

I hear Bishop Doyle has called four Priest suspects into his Northampton Cathedral today to answer about revealing secrets.

Well, he’s not called me in ! And, I’ve been on this blog lots. But, the man really does need to stop taking himself so seriously, and take a chill pill. By getting all annoyed and blowing steam out of every orifice, and threatening his priests and interrogating them, he is just making it worse for himself, and alienating people. It would be best if he just retired in to the corner and shut up, and eventually it will all go away. He may have a bit of a bruised ego, but that’s a small price to pay in order to stop this becoming a tsunami of worse stories. He has been told. But, I doubt if he will take the advice. So, + Doyle, you had better prepare for much worse from various quarters if you want to escalate all this and take things up a notch. That’s not a threat, it’s just a fact of life. Play with fire an you will get burned. Piss off your people and your priests and all your good work over the years will be forgotten, and you will leave your role remembered as an angry and embittered man. Now, that would be pity, wouldn’t it ? So, calm down ! Please !

Sadly, these historical incidents of abuse in state homes and in religious institutions will continue to be reported requiring investigation. It is a sad reality that children in all societies were often deemed a nuisance and trouble and often unwanted, definitions given of particular behaviours that deemed them unfavourable and requiring instutionalisation. A horrendous decision in any era of history because we now know once behind walls these children, abandoned by civil and religious society, were very vulnerable and susceptible to abuses of all kinds. If both church and state agencies and leadership have any real justice, compassion or integrity of conscience, we should not have to inflict any further unecessary hurt in anyone who experienced abuse of any kind by putting them through the hoops, waiting for investigative reports. There is a moral imperative on all agencies of church and state to come together in a TRUTH COMMISSION to establish all truth and establish all relevant facts, information and decisions made by whosoever, who articulated those decisions and who were the medical, judicial, political, civil and religious personnel involved. Until all who were part of these horrible, shameful aspects of our treatment of children and young women are brought tigether as one unit, we will continued to inflict further pain and hurt on all who are waiting ( some in old age) for justice or even just for a collective word of regret, apology and shame. It is the moral thing to do: it is also the Christian thing to do. It is not right that critics continue to use the tragedy of others to push their anti church agenda. Surely we’re past that and NOW we need to harness the power of public outrage to ensure a full TRUTH COMMISSION with all agencies, civil and religious forced to attend. No one should be excluded from such a commission. Our approach at the moment is piece meal, and often directed by a legal profession who are benefiting financially more than is acceptable.

‘If both church and state agencies and leadership have any real justice, compassion or integrity of conscience, we should not have to inflict any unnecessary hurt in anyone who experienced abuse of any kind….’ . There’s the rub.
Both Church and State don’t have compassion, desire justice for those abused or integrity of conscience.
They couldn’t give a s**t. That’s been my experience. No end of public apologies from Church leaders, mere public relations exercises, in my view, but the reality for those abused is to be reabused and retraumatized, if you tell your story. I don’t know what the Institutional Church is about, at this stage, other than lip service , hypocrisy and empty rhetoric and platitudes.

Will there ever be an end to these revelations? It seems abuse from the catholic church is on a scale that not even the most hardened journalist could imagine.
With these revelations coming out more and more, and the hypocrisy of Francis their pope, it seems hard for any honest to God catholic to trust any of their catholic clergy now in 2019.
Yes, there are indeed some excellent catholic priests out there, dedicated to their faith and dedicated to serving their parishioners, I do not doubt that, but it does seem that these good men are now being tarred with the same brush and trust has now totally vanished.
This became evident in a London parish recently, where a catholic friend of mine told me the parish priest asked for volunteers to become altar servers. It seems this parish had not had any new volunteers come forward since 2012. However after six weeks of promoting the idea of altar servers, not one boy or girl came forward to volunteer. Not one. The parents refused to trust their parish priest, who as far as I know is a fine man of faith, nothing to do with him, but the actions of many of his fellow brother priests in his church has caused this.
So to try and bolster the lack of altar servers, they have now got four volunteer older altar servers, the youngest being 45. Can you imagine a time back in the 1950s say, that serving at mass was done by nearly men aged over 40?
Is there any hope, whatsoever for the catholic church of regaining the trust of their faithful? I leave that question with you Pat and your readers. I sincerely doubt it.

Like

Why does a priest need an “altar server”? Surely it’s not essential to have one: other than to bolster up the perceived clerical status of needing a servant?
Our ould PP, as a canon back in the 1950’s used say mass in his own living room when in his 80’s he became too frail to go out. With poor vision, his main concern was to make sure we servers put enough wine in chalice. “Is it all in son?” was a constant!

As we know from previous blogs, some priests prefer “silverdaddies”, so over-forties altar servers could also be at risk.

Oh dear, poor + Richard Moth of A&B. I’d say he had been hoping to go there, his home diocese, after stints in the military and A&B. Wilson is young enough to outlive Moth, so his wish probably isn’t going to be fulfilled. Oh well, I suppose he could set his sights on Liverpool or Birmingham, or maybe even Westminster, although that may be a step too far.

Northampton was raised on the blog owing to legitimate concerns in the public interest regarding the handling of the Francis McDermott case. So, if this Viper has done you such harm, and it was inappropriate / abusive, then you need to take that to the Safeguarding people wherever he is based, or you are. Or, give his name and details to + Pat and let him pursue it for you. If you are telling the truth ? And if you are real ? If not, then you need to stop. But, if you are, and you are serious about it then you should take it forward. I’m sure people will take you seriously.

I find it curious, posters are more concerned about gossip and church
appointments, rather than commenting on the topic for discussion.
Boys raped by priests at satanic parties and Bishop Buckley mentions black mass in the Vatican,
yet tittle tattle and gossip is the main preoccupation of most! The Catholic Church is imploding rapidly.
Who gives a fiddlers about appointments and who in their right mind would want to be a member of the
hierarchy in this day and age. Denial is still rampant in clerical circles.

Thank you @ 4:41 for expressing my own views about the endless ‘internal clerical prattle’ over appointments etc. The consistent failure to discuss issues, by many supposed clerics, reveals much about their priorities and mindset.

I see the Vatican, true to form, is pronouncing on gender, and putting forward a completely unsustainable theory of gender that has long been bypassed by science and progress. So, they just dig in their feet in a discredited theology of the person and sexuality, and alienate not just those who are directly affected, but we Catholics who think and live our faith rather than just blindly following outdated and badly expressed Vatican theories. They are out of step and out of touch on most issues of sexuality, gender, relationships. It is no wonder that people are just ignoring them, or moving off elsewhere. I just prefer to ignore them myself, and sign resignedly. But, I might get to a point when I do move off. I guess all they will miss is the big monthly gift aided standing order I give to my parish. I guess they would come knocking looking for that. But, they won’t listen to the reasons why I will have cancelled it.

No. I hope it all comes out, the truth, and those who have inflicted such evil upon the innocent are called to account, as well as those who knew about it and didn’t say anything. They will all be so sorry, and eat humble pie and ask forgiveness, but we must never forget the enormity of evil that they have inflicted upon the helpless, harmless, innocent, vulnerable and poorest. The Vatican is stating the blindingly obvious about gender: it is a fact of life that we are created / born male and female. For the most part, people are settled and content in their gender. I have not been able to read the full text of the new document on gender, but I am hoping that they have the sense to realise that, having stated the above self-evident reality, there will be people who have physical and psychological challenges with their gender. I worry that the Vatican just will discount these people and their needs, in the interest of stating and defending the obvious about gender, whereas it should, and I hope it does, recognise the challenges of those who have difficulties, and the possibility that sometimes gender for a particular person can be got wrong by nature, by birth, by physical disability etc. And, those people need to be respected and loved in their difficulty.

I have come across people who have gender issues in their lives, and I have always thought how courageous they are in facing these difficulties in the face of a world that so often ridicules and discounts them. I worked with one trans gender person who was simply fantastic at her job, and a great person too, and for whom I have the highest regard for the courage it took to transition and to carry on with a productive life. I don’t have any sense that trans gender people are self-indulgent or irresponsible, but rather that they take seriously the issues they face, and confront them with a courage which is humbling. I do so hope that the Vatican document, while stating the obvious about gender, even as the design of God, does justice and gives respect to those who have challenges with gender. As they should be doing with issues of sexuality. One can only hope.

I note the document is in part directed at educators, and here I hope that the Vatican is able to encourage conversation and debate about the issue of gender, especially to those who are growing up, so that they will be aware that not everybody fits the same mould. Similar issues are alive in the UK in the matter of sexuality and how it is taught in schools, with some Islamic communities not happy about what the law requires to be taught in our schools, namely that different sexualities, according to law, are respected and protected. I hope that the Vatican will be able to encourage this respect for gender issues to be taught in our schools, rather than ruling out debate and education and condemning alternative ways of being, expressing and loving. As it so often does !
