GOD HAS BEEN VERY GOOD TO ME

GoodShepherdIcon.jpg

I was sitting in my garden yesterday afternoon at 3 pm in the sunshine. My Jack Russell pets, Aria and Buzz were lying at my feet and the whole scene was perfect and peaceful.

My thoughts turned towards God and I prayed. I then felt a very silent and still presence and I was deeply moved. I praised God for all the wonderful things he had done for me during my life. I asked him to help me with all I was doing and also asked him to let me know if anything I was doing was against his wishes to give me a sign. And all my heart heard: “Just tell people how good I have been to you”.

I had two good parents but we were very poor. As the oldest of 17 children I, very early, felt the burden of being a third parent. That made me very serious too early and I had a childhood overshadowed by worrying about things that no child should have to worry about.

But my dad had introduced me to daily Mass at the age of 4 and that habit continued all my life. As a child I brought all my worries to God at Mass and in the church. It really got me through my childhood and especially my teenage years when I became aware of my sexuality. Because of RC teaching I became very guilty and ashamed of who I was. My daily Mass and my daily hour in the church talking to God got me through – even thought I was not aware of it.

At 18 I entered Clonliffe seminary Dublin. I loved the seminary life especially Mass, the Divine Office and the spiritual exercises. I enjoyed the camaraderie of some companions but carrying the “secret” of my sexuality made me feel difficult in small and large groups where a lot of banter went on. I had a big problem of blushing and of course others saw this and it gave them something to tease me about. But good God was with me and that got me through.

My second seminary was St, John’s in Waterford. Life was wonderful there. I felt no pressure and the president, Monsignor John Shine was a wonderful inspiration to me and he gave me wonderful encouragement and support. God works through good people  like John Shine RIP.

My ordination on Pentecost Sunday June 6th 1976 was the best day of my whole life. God had granted me something I had longed for since the age of 4.

I had a tough beginning to ministry in Wales in 1976 to 1978 with having two old Irish parish priests who were absolute tyrants. I will not go into the details but all this was helped by having a wonderful spiritual director who belonged to the Servants of the Paraclete order.

In 1978 I came to Belfast and to St Peter’s in Divis Flats. At the beginning things were good in the presbytery but after a year went sour. I got through those years by spending an hour a day before the Blessed Sacrament.

When Cahal Daly came to Down and Connor in 1982 things began to change. A couple of priests convinced Daly that I  was a “problem”. Daly moved me from Belfast to Kilkeel and then tom Larne. He disliked my public and media outspokenness about the failures of the church. We had a few conversations and one big 4 hour meeting, I was respectful to him but refused to accept his way of looking at the world and told him my way. It was obvious we were not going to agree. He did not like that. Daly was the boss and it was his way or the highway. In 1986 he showed me the door. All that time I felt God close to me and I was able to deal with my distress by taking it to God.

For the past 33  years I have ministered independently from Larne, I have kept an open door.  If all the people that have passed through The Oratory turned up at once we would have to meet in a large football stadium.

2007-100

Father Sean Rogan who was a curate told a Larne parishioner not to worry about The Oratory as “only the dregs went there”.

I sent him a message thanking him for what I said,

Other priests call The Oratory a hayshed. I take that as a great compliment. Was not the Saviour born in a stable/hayshed

There are people/Christians who like to be part of a herd and then develop the herd mentality. It was a herd of Jews and others at Calvary who shouted “Crucify him”

Then there are individuals, who while being far from perfect, are either not part of the herd or are rejected by the herd who do their own thing.

The Oratory has ministered to thousands of people in 33 years who were rejected by their own priest or minister. They said NO to them. We said and say YES to them.

th28CECR7P.jpg

Archbishop Helder Camara of South America once said:

“Try and say yes to people. and when you have to say no to them try and make the no as much like yes as possible”.

Anyway, as I said at the beginning, I want to acknowledge today how good God has been to me all my life.

No offence meant to our atheist and agnostic readers.

Pat, thanks for the wonderful quote in the Camara picture. How true it is. I sometimes think that if Daly had been caring towards you, you would have remained more merciful to the church. It reminds me of a quote attributed to an angel – ‘ If the pope at the time of Henry the eighth had told Henry what he should or should not do instead of telling him what he could or could not do, England might still be catholic today’.

Pat, a very reflective essay. I, like you, can count my blessings in priesthood and give daily gratitude to GOD. While you and I differ hugely in our understanding of ministry, service, Church etc…, there is a common theme. As you grow into priesthood and reflect prayerfully each day, you learn how to prioritise the important matters, values and concerns of ministry. The only focus now of my approach after 35 years is to always ask, ‘ What would Christ do or expect of me?’. I do not get caught up any more in the politics, machinations, clericalism or careerism of church life at Diocesan level. It revolts me but thank God I can live without being attached to all or any of these “isms”. I despise the awful nastiness and vindictiveness directed against priests on this blog. Some criticisms are very valid but much of it is pure bitchiness and back stabbing. Some use this blog very viciously against their colleagues and Bishops. When we realise the dignity of the priesthood of Christ which we as priests are called to imitate and which all of us through baptism share, the horrendous, vulgar and vengeful commentary is an affront to Christ. I hope you have many years still of joy and while it is a very difficult time to continue to remain a priest, I find my strength, motivation and comfort only in Christ. I struggle with the ideals of Christ and priesthood but I have moments of profound awareness of God with me and reaching others through some ‘good’ that I do. Like you, I have encountered some very kind, good, prayerful and inspiring priests, especially at the beginning of ministry. The awkward ones I ignored as best I could but the Presbyterate is a mix of all kinds!! Essentially, my thoughts are of daily graritude to God in the light and in the darkness, in the joy and in the suffering, in the moments of belief and in the searching questions.

I liked your post @ 12:30 am.
However, do you realise, thousands have had their lives destroyed by your colleagues in the priesthood.
Many have suffered to the point of committing suicide as a result. Do you know what harm spiritual abuse has on a person’s spiritual life. The careerism, clericalism, and clerical petty politics gossiping , reflected on this blog is revolting.
The dignity of the priesthood has been brought into the gutter by priests, bishops and Cardinals.
What is, not just an affront to Christ, but an abonmination, is people who claim to be ‘other Christs’, destroying people’s lives, then hiding behind the institutional church. What’s going on, and gone on, in the institutional church, is an affront to Christ, where the gospel is being discredited by the ‘professional christians’. If priests had moral courage to challenge what’s going on in the institutional church, posters to this blog might not be so cynical, nasty and vindictive. That’s little to have to deal with in the context of ruined lives by priests, bishops and Cardinals, of the institutional church.
Maybe, Christ will say to those who died prematurely as a consequence of clerical abuse;- ‘ better had you not being catholic. Come, enter into the place I have prepared for you.’
Many of you priests don’t seem to understand the depth of harm, hurt, and wounding, caused in so many lives by members of the catholic priestly brotherhood. An ABOMINATION. A DISGRACE. SHAME on you people.
Knowing children were raped and keeping it silent. An affront, if ever.
Challenge your fraternal priestly colleagues, who disgrace the memory of Christ, and don’t keep His memory sacred.

8.26: Firstly, you liked my post at 12.30am. Secondly, you go on literally to lump me in with that awful “you priests” barrel of “filth”. Since the unfolding publicly of all abuses if all kinds I have registered publicly, in print, at various gatherings and in Church my utter abhorrence of abuse if any kind. In fact in a number of occasions in past parishes I took a very strong stand against any person, priests, religious or lay where I recognised bullying or abuse of any kind. On three occasions I was responsible against much opposition in having certain individuals reported to relevant authorites and being removed from Church activities of any kind. I, like many, many of my colleagues abhor all abuses and bullying and have zero tolerance of such.. I think the narrative that suggests “we are all responsible” and that “we don’t get it about the effects of abuse” is false, unjust, nasty and unfair. I am deeply saddened at the disgrace brought to priesthood by the criminal, abusive behaviour of any priest. Now I am forever vigilant and treat all whom I encounter with the utmost respect, care and kindness. I’m not living in a cocoon. I have always been with people on the ground and try to stand alongside all who struggle or who need support, listening and kindness of heart. My parents especially, some teachers and some religious and clerics also greatly inspired me over the years.

Except you don’t get it, because you think you can somehow be exonerated for being a servant of an abusive organization by saying you disagree. You can’t. You are actually burying your head in the sand and you think this narrative is unfair because you are in denial.

Sorry, here is the full link to Tom Forde of the Friary, Kilkenny, describing gay people as rotten and spiritually corrupt inside. His homily would better apply to the Catholic priesthood.

Well, let’s hope the Bishop of that Diocese and the Superior of his Order will have something to say about this, and take away his permission to preach. He is evidently a man full of anger, spite and hatred, with little sign of love and mercy. He should not be given the privilege of the pulpit to give publicity to his warped views. I know some will say that he is only teaching what the Church teaches. No ! He is not ! He is teaching hate. And that trumps everything else. The man is a disgrace, and those who allow him the oxygen of publicity are complicit in his disgrace. I would say, in addition, there are grounds for seeing aspects of this homily as hate speech, and that needs to be looked at by the secular authorities. The pulpit does not give people the protection to spew hate speech.

I find it very difficult to believe, many of the ‘good priests’ , were unaware of clerical child abuse and cover up.
It’s not credible. The clerical fraternity came/comes first. If so many in the priesthood ‘ get it’, why are many of those who were abused, treated by bishops like pariahs, when they come forward? I spoke to my parish priest about a matter. The response was deafening silence. I’m sick of the public rhetoric of apologies but the private couldn’t give a s**t attitude of bishops. You and your good colleagues, challenge your bishops as a collective.
This is going on for 35 years and far from over. There’s plenty more to come. I’m as much church, as you or the bishops or pope, by virtue of my baptism. Priests are supposed to be servants of God’s people, not self serving members of a clerical privileged club.

You have a very strong sense of goodness and justice Pat so why do you allow your blog to be used by anonymous bullies to harass others with their rumours and lies? When you are thinking about Gods goodness to you today please think about the hurt you cause to all those attacked on your blog.

9.53: Pat has been requested many times to disallow the horrendous abuse levelled against named individuals on his blog. Pat is delusional. Pat is all about himself, his views, his lifestyle, his image. He has good qualities but he also has many faults, probably the worst one being his sneering, ridiculing disdain and contempt shown to many clerics and to those who challenge him. Pat has hurt many others: he facilitates a tyranny of bullying and abuse against others. I find his sentiments on his blog today very inconsistent with much of his behaviour. Pat may well have reason to say God has been good to him but the more apt question might be – has Pat returned this goodness of God to others by showing a modicum of compassionate understanding, respect and mercy to those who have failed abysmally? Pat makes very definitive judgments against many, judgments which are certainly not of the GOD of JESUS.

A member of faculty in St. John’s College, the seminary mentioned in your piece, was known to frequently visit the room of a ‘mature’ student. This student was known by the faculty, to have been involved in homosexual acting out, while in seminary. Seminarians used to think this student was a snitch. He was ordained.

A guy from Belfast was kicked out of seminary for missing office a few times, also a Mass on a sunday.
He was a good guy but might have being difficult for a bishop to handle as he had a mind of his own.

Knowing what we now know about seminary abuse, including abuse of authority, I wonder if more was going on than just snitching.

Funny isn’t it how Father resorts to shouting abuse when other people simply don’t accept his own narrative.
You are going to have to face the fact that from here on in, priests (like yourself) are not the good guys and no longer have the power to shut everyone else up.
Going by your own reaction I would actually question whether you are a Christian at all… No humility, no willingness to accept that clergy are regarded with horror because of the actions of the ‘few bad apples’.
Now go on, why don’t you claim to be a victim?
And one more question which you will just answer with bluster… Why do you read this blog?
Pat, abusive comments like those of this priest should not be allowed. It’s disgusting, the way they carry on.
