LAST WEEK THIS BLOG RECEIVED A NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS CONCERNING TWO SENIOR DUBLINB PRIESTS – THE ACTING CHANCELLOR FATHER PAUL COYLE AND THE PARISH PRIEST OF RUSH – FATHER KEVIN BARTLEY.

_______________

I thought that the right and proper thing to do was to refer those complaints to the Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin.
I did so.
The archbishop replied to say that the complaints came as a surprise to him.
He said he would immediately begin “a formal investigation”.
He made the further point that pending the outcome of the investigation he would be giving the two priests the the presumption of innocence.
The archbishop is perfectly right to approach his formal investigation by giving the men the presumption of innocence.
That is completely in line with natural justice.
I will be asking the archbishop the outcome of his investigation.
Since then I have discovered that Father Kevin Bartley is highly regarded by his fellow priests in Dublin.
On the other hand, Father Paul Coyle is. for whatever reason, not held in high esteem by the same priests.

it would be interesting to know what the complaints against these two are ? But, I guess the accusations will be kept quiet and vague and we will not know. Is that right ? If there are serious matters against these guys, then we should know. Shouldn’t we ? If they have nothing to answer for then they have nothing to hide. If there is questionable stuff, then we should know. + Martin of Dublin will do his utmost to minimize it and keep it quiet. Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose !

What is the point of today’s blog? It tells us nothing and has only got a few old women gossiping. Is it just to get names into the public arena without saying anything so that people’s imaginations can run wild?

The point of the blog is to state the FACTS that DM received complaints and is investigating them. It is a matter of public interest.

A question. In a workplace situation, when one or more individuals are investigated with a view to potential misconduct and consequent disciplinary action, there is a requirement for discretion and confidentiality until the process is complete. Trades union officials rightly insist on this – I think, Pat, your father was one. In this situation, these two individuals are exposed to public scrutiny when they *may* be entirely innocent of any wrongdoing. How then can they easily resume their careers/vocations?
I’m all for exposing hypocrisy and wrongdoing. However, I’m equally in favour of following a decent and proper procedure which Archbishop Martin appears to be following here.
If he were not, I think this whole situation should be exposed with names and everything laid bare. There have been far too many cover ups.
As a believer in natural justice, today’s post makes me feel a bit queasy. I’m not a priest or a particularly regular churchgoer and have no agenda before I’m accused of being an apologist for anything or anyone.

Outraged!! Have you any idea of the suffering and pain it has taken to carry this case and eventually put it to a bishop like Dermo?

FFS what’s wrong with you people? These men are not, say, plasterers or plumbers. Other walks of life where nobody would care are legion – lawyers, teachers, doctors, you name it. All those professions can be in long term sexual relationships and their professional bodies would not be interested.
A Catholic priest belongs to an organisation which clearly says that genital sex is only permissible with your one, opposite gender spouse.
What’s wrong with this picture? Nobody is interested in a plumber’s private, legal, sexual activity. Priests are different, and if they are trying to have their cake and eat it they are headed for a crash.
And that is a matter of public interest.

Your reasoning at 7:16 is as faulty as your tone is brash.
If you take your argument to its logical conclusion, any Catholic is open to the same treatment. A priest is not more a Catholic than a layperson. Both are members of the Body of Christ.
Furthermore, many of those who are actively trying to change, develop and progress the church’s understanding of same-sex relationships are priests.
When was the last time you heard a sermon against this topic? In fact, if you did hear one recently, as recent events have shown, it’s likely to be the public posturing who is gay and wishes to divert attention from his private experience to his public image.
So your position is unreasonable – like using a blunt instrument where a more subtle strategy is required.
Pax et bonum.

1.20 what utter waffle. A priest is supposed to be a leader and an example of holy living.
