103 YEAR OLD BISHOP ACCUSED OF ABUSE.

World’s oldest living bishop, who is uncle of Chile’s president, accused of abuse

MADRID, Spain – Chile’s President Sebastian Piñera, has urged for the Catholic Church to be investigated over clerical sexual abuse, and he gave his full support to new law that ends the statutes of limitations on abuse cases.

However, when it comes to the allegations made against his uncle, the world’s oldest living bishop, he’s having a hard time believing it.

Archbishop Bernardino Piñera, who served as Archbishop of Serena from 1983-1990 after previously serving as Bishop of Temuco, is being investigated by the Vatican over allegations that he sexually abused a minor 50 years ago. The news was announced by the Holy See’s embassy in Chile on Tuesday.

Soon after, the president said: “As a nephew, I find it hard to believe because I know his behavior, his attitude over a lifetime, and I find it hard to believe a complaint that is made against a man who’s 103 years old today, over an alleged event that occurred 50 years ago.”

Despite his personal disbelief, the president urged that the investigation be continued.
Piñera’s words came during a visit to Temuco, in central Chile. Asked about his uncle, he said that his government’s position is “firm, clear and consistent: Any complaint must be rigorously investigated to verify its likelihood and to clarify the truth, and this case is no exception.”

The Vatican’s announcement only confirmed that Piñera is accused of abusing a minor, but gave no further details about the accusation.
The statement said that they reached out to the person who has filed the complaint and that, at the same time, they’re respecting the principle of the presumption of innocence.
Also on Tuesday, Archbishop Piñera issued a statement saying that he’d learned about the Vatican’s investigation against him through the press statement.

“I manifest that I am unaware of the accusation that has given rise to [the investigation] and I offer my full disposition to collaborate in the clarification of it,” the older Piñera said.

“I attest that, during my long priestly life that began in 1945, I always had impeccable behavior,” the letter concluded.

The archbishop had previously been accused by abuse survivors of covering up for his successor, former Archbishop Francisco Cox, who was removed from the priesthood by Pope Francis last year.

Though it’s unclear when Cox’s acts of abuse began, it’s been well documented that by the year 1974, when he arrived as bishop in the Chilean diocese of Chillan, Cox was already abusing minors.

From Chillan, Cox would move on to become secretary of the Vatican’s former Pontifical Council for the Family, a position he held from 1981 until 1985, when he was sent back to Chile as coadjutor bishop of La Serena, to replace Piñera. In 1987 he was tapped to organize Pope John Paul II’s visit to Chile, which allowed him to become close to then-Archbishop Angelo Sodano, papal representative in the country.

Cox was eventually named archbishop of La Serena, a position he kept until 1997, when his resignation was discreetly accepted by the Vatican. It came five years after a priest made a formal complaint to the bishops’ conference claiming he had discovered Cox having sex with a young man.

Yet until 2002, when he began living a life of “penance and prayer,” first in Switzerland and then in Germany under the care of the Schönstatt Fathers at the request of the Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops, Cox remained semi- active, with positions in the Conference of Latin American Bishops as well as in the Vatican.
Francis has accepted the resignation of eight Chilean bishops over the past year, after all of them offered to step down in May 2018. The country’s bishops have found themselves engulfed in scandal due to decades of mismanagement, cover-up and, in some cases, personally having committed sexual abuse.

In addition, nine bishops have been summoned by the prosecutors’ office to testify on charges that they either covered up for abuse or sexually abused minors and young seminarians themselves. Among those accused of covering up abuse is Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati, who was removed by Francis as Archbishop of Santiago earlier this year.

PAT SAYS

The age of the bishop – ordained 74 years ago, lets us see that the abuse problem is a very old one.

He is accused of abusing 50 years ago.

Sad to reach the wonderful age of 103 and then be accused of abusing.

Of course, his age is no block to investigation and prosecution. I think in Italy people over 70 are not sent to prison?

If he is an abuser its hard to imaging that no alarms were raised before now.

Or did someone cover up for him?

There appears to be a lot of clerical sex abuse in South America.

Wait until the African story blows!

Pat, we are well aware of the widespread nature of sexual abuse scandals in the Church worldwide. I read this story a few days ago and it is very alarming. There is only an accusation. It may or may not be true. Why did someone wait till now to make an accusation? If this 103 year old Bishop abused (we don’t know) and nothing was done, is it because of his political connections? Or, is someone trying to discredit the President by making this accusation? We know that in today’s climate accusations against priests and bishops are given immediate credibility because so many clerics in all eras have been found guilty. It is easy to tarnish all and sadly, many false allegations have destroyed the reputation and livelihood of many priests. But when an accusation is made by an individual it must be treated with the utmost seriousness.

‘Many false allegations have destroyed the reputation and livelihood of many priests’? Really?

Number the ‘many’. And cite your source for this claim.

And who are the ‘many’ priests here?

Like

We saw a gross miscarriage of justice in the high profile Pell case. We don’t know how many similar miscarriages happened down the line. The vast majority of accused priests are never brought to trial, so the accusation sticks unquestioned.

Like

These are very obvious questions. What will happen when people realize that not only priests but anybody can be accused of abuse dating back 50 or 70 or 80 years?

Utter nonsense. Pell was correctly convicted.
Your desperation is pathetic: ‘We don’t know how many similar cases down the line.’
Control your frightened imagination. Such overthinking is appropriate only in children.
The vast majority of priests not brought to trial were protected by their bishops in secret, confidential settlements with victims; this is why none of this was ever made public, much less reach a courtroom.
The extent of sexual abuse of minors by Roman Catholic priests is far wider, and more insidious, than any of us previously thought. Some of those abused were NEVER able to reach the stage of even confidential settlenent becsuse they had committed suicide.
Your post in defence of these men is disgraceful.

Like

It just goes to show, that if this bishop is guilty, that men of his and Pell’s ilk are not called by God but by Satan who has wormed his way into the higher echelons of the RC church. Sadly they will not be the only ones doing the devils work whilst masquerading as disciples of Christ, whether it be physical, psychological, financial or sexual abuse. Satan has a grip on the RC church and has had for years . It’s only now that through mediums like this blog that it is becoming exposed. The RC church is a mess and will continue rapidly on a downward spiral .

Anon@2:17: You speak of Satan as if that entity is a concrete reality: a living being so to speak. Could you explain further about who, where and how this being exists and functions please?
The question is not rhetorical. I’m interested to try and understand your perception.

Clearly Magna you get the underlying basis behind my questioning this alleged existence of “Satan”.
Freud referred to “Projection” as one of the ego defences. Satan, for me, seems merely a projection onto an allegedly maloevalent being who is responsible for “making me do bad things.” It’s an escapism from personal responsibility, and both a RCC readily used handy “get out of jail” excuse for/by clerics, and a weapon to cower the laity into acquiescent dependence.

MMM, are you saying therefore, God is merely a projection of the good in humanity on to a benevolent supernatural being?

MMM referred to Freud’s describing Projection as an ‘ego defence’ when humans do bad things. Human goodness would scarcely need projecting, would it? Therefore I doubt whether MMM is suggesting any such thing.

False accusations have destroyed the reputation and livelihood of many lay people. There are complex but documented reasons why victims are slow to come forward with historical abuse allegations.

MMM, you used Freudian psychology, in particular, psychological projection,
as a means to explain the alleged existence of Satan, a malevolent being responsible
for ‘making me do bad things’. You fobbed off my question at 3:18pm, by patronising me with logic,at 10:05pm.
Psychobabble, (a fixation, for Social Workers of a particular genetation) was used by you, not me.
Psychobabble is easily used, misused and abused.
The underlying basis for the existence of Satan, is scripture, tradition and catholic dogma.
Whether you believe in or disbelieve in the existence of Satan is a separate matter.
Freudian psychology doesn’t cut the mustard, MMM.
Please, refrain from patronising.

Do you feel “got at” A. @ 12:22. Pity. Maybe you’re a rose among thorns rather than a wallflower?
Neither you, nor others, appear able to answer my straightforward query to 2:17 at 10:31 concerning this Satan creature’s alleged existence………other than references to that much disputed ancient collection of middle eastern writings and their, again much disputed, highly selective interpretations: “scripture, tradition and catholic dogma” as you put it.
It seems to me, dear sir or madam, that when confronted with hard questions concerning the justification for religious beliefs, believers have no answers other than reliance on this “scripture, tradition and dogma” farrago to which is usually added personal conviction, otherwise piously referred to as “faith.”

In projection, the ego defends itself against unconscious impulses or qualities by denying them and attributing them to ‘the other’.
These impulses can be
both positive or negative.

Like

Are you suggesting that humanity has an intrinsic imperative to project (objectify) not only the bad in it, but also the good?

Like

Magna, I’m not the commenter you asked that of, but what you’re saying may be exactly the way projection works in religious terms. Do you remember recently on here someone who was adamant that Pope ‘St’ John Paul 2 was heroic in virtue despite the evidence to the contrary? God can be the object of all sorts of projections, and I find interesting the way it works in Hinduism, where it is difficult to project because your fate is a consequence of your actions, but bad things tend to get projected on to Kali.

Are you sure your not projecting (attributing) your own feelings of being got at?

With respect, don’t be naive about saint making in the Rcc.
I was the poster who questioned how Pope John Paul 2 could be considered a saint, in the light of his knowledge of child sexual abuse and it’s cover up. He, along with numerous colleagues, could have prevented untold suffering for years. They didnt.

I don’t know on what basis Pope John Paul 2 was canonized, but there’s far more to saint making than miracles and virtues. I suspect it may have been primarily for political reasons. He was probably a good man, even having some heroic virtues, but why the rush to make him a saint, particularly in the context of the mess in the Rcc?
Having some heroic virtues doesn’t make one a saint.

There’s also far more to religion, religious experience and spirituality, than psychology.

It’s worse. Zanchetta is a personal friend of Pope Francis. Reports claim that Vatican officials apparently including the Pope, have been aware since 2015 of well-substantiated accussations against Zanchetta of inappropriate conduct with seminarians, as well as other forms of personal misbehaviour on the part of the Bishop, including his sharing naked selfies on Whatsapp, gay porn, etc.. The Vatican has denied it was informed of the accusations in 2015, but admits that it has known of them since Autumn of last year, when an internal investigation was begun of Zanchetta. There’s two criminal investigations based on accusations of sexual abuse filed against him in Argentina, where he was a Bishop. It’s claimed by journalists the Pope is covering up for Zanchetta.

No wonder the Vatican did a deal with the Colombian Government in 1973 not to have its bishops held accountable in civil courts for crimes; I bet it now wishes it had struck a similar deal with the Chilean authorities, first under Allende, and then under Pinochet. (But, more often than not, it p****d off the Pinochet junta.😄)

Think about this for a moment. If the Roman Catholic Church was founded by Christ 😅😅😅, why would it need judicial protection and legal exceptionalism for its holy ministers?😆

But Magna, you don’t understand! The church must be holy, everyone says so, and they are all holy people that say it. You just don’t see the holiness because you’re looking in the wrong place and not at all the holy priests and religious slaving away without reward. I would name one if I could. And we must be grateful to the bishops for their heavy responsibility when nobody wants to be a priest! Anyway they’re all too busy to make their holiness known, except for the delusional one who keeps coming on here saying he speaks out in public about abuse but won’t give his name…

Our voices have been heard by our parishioners too. If only you and your ilk would open your ears…..Incidentally, why don’t you print your name? Why? Give us legitimate reasons. If you are genuinely concerned about the survivors of abuse, if you are really concerned about a renewed Church, if you have nothing to hide, print your name and occupation. Otherwise, shut up!!
