TITTLE TATTLE BETWEEN TWO IRISH BISHOPS 1968 – PLUS.

A Dublin priest has given me correspondence to and from Joe Carroll, the late auxiliary bishop of Dublin.

As well as being auxiliary bishop of Dublin he was president of Clonliffe Seminary when I was there – 1970 – 1973.

He was a pompous man loved being a bishop and dressing up as a bishop.

The correspondence I have were letters to and from him about his Episcopal consecration in 1968.

Bishop Patrick Dunne

_______________

THE INVITATION TO THE CONSECRATION

BELOW: A LETTER FROM A RETIRED AUXILIARY OF DUBLIN PATRICK DUNNE

Dunne is thanking Joe Carroll from buying him a purple bishop’s biretta from the famous, and expensive Gamarelli Roman clerical outfitters.

He is also sympathising with Joe Carroll about the people saying they cant attend.

The Taoiseach of the time, Jack Lynch said he was coming.

Another letter from Bishop Dunne laments the fact that he and another bishop were not wearing enough clobber at a recent consecration and the fact that he did not get enough prominence at the ceremony.

BELOW: THE BUSKINS AND SANDALD DUNNE WANTED HIM AND JOE TO WEAR AT HIS CONSECRATION.

Bishop Dunne wanted to buy Joe a chain for his pectoral cross – a good one from Rome – solid gold I’m sure. And Dunne refers to him as “My Dear Lord’.

So much for

“There is only one Lord and he is in Heaven.

And then there is the letter from the Chief Hearld of Ireland about Joe’s coat of arms.

And then the note to Ossie Dowling the press officer saying

“Ring my private line. Let it ring three times and then hang up and ring again”

The documents I recieved

As I said poor Joe was very pompous.

He loved parading around in all the gear.

He once announced at lunch time in the seminary that he had mistaken for Cardinal Manning that morning. He was beaming,

But the correspondence in an insight into Irish bishops in 1968.

Don’t worry today they all hate dressing up it’s a real nuisance for them draws too much attention but please don’t think it’s because they are living some sort of Fransican poverty and humility, they prefer to be centre stage with a microphone. Personally I prefer them to spend their donations on bitettas and soutanes it at least is a sign of some interest in the office they hold and goes back to a time when clerics generally took care of their appearance most priests and bishops today need a good wash and a trip to the dentist

I lived in the parish of St Mary’s, Haddington Road, in the late 1950s, early 1960s. Bishop Dunne was an
amiable man, who combined the roles of parish priest and sole auxiliary bishop. He worked hard
conducting confirmation services – this at a time when most young people came (perhaps I should have said
‘were brought’) forward for confirmation, and there was no practice of delegating the task of confirming to
episcopal vicars etc. Dunne was a Rugby enthusiast and took a very different view from his archbishop as to
the propriety of priests playing the game.
@0628 am. Perhaps Carroll meant the Los Angeles Manning who was created a cardinal in 1973?

When Dublin changed the remuneration system for priests under the reign of Dermot Ryan (I think) His Lordship Dunne refused to be part of the new system and retained the old in Haddington Rd. A common fund was established to give an equality of income to all priests. Under the old system the priests lived on the income of the parish so rich parish meant rich priests, while others barely made ends meet in poorer places. It was a useful control mechanism for His Grace. Dunne was a greedy little man. Their Lordships were in many cases from humble backgrounds and though of themselves as clerical nobility – Princes of the Church……..what a laugh.

Thank you so much for bringing back memories of these magnificent Prelates, His Lordship Bishop Joseph Carroll and His Lordship Bishop Patrick Dunne, I know of course that was not your intention, which is is to view them in a negative way, but not for me, I remember them well with great affection, both the epitome of what a Bishop should be. Compared to what we now have it’s heartbreaking. Of course the polyester and zip-up alb brigade will howl in protest, but who cares. May the souls of these wonderful Bishops rest in peace.

I can tell you’re very sorry from your sarcasm but I could not care less for people like you. Those wonderful Bishops looked after their people very well worked hard at their job and did not delegate work like they do now. But above all they behaved and appeared always mindful of the dignity of their office, that to me is the epitome of what a Bishop should be. Is that you Magna? sounds like you.

We get to peep into the world of sumptious episcopal living from abundant mammon through those easy and telling words of Dunne: ‘You need not have any scruple about my paying for one of the red vestments. A set is required in the church and the church account will pay.’
No concerns here (much less worries) about cashflow. No sense of living from hand to mouth, as many of Dunne’s fellow Catholics at the time were doing.
We’ve entered a rarified, and socially detached, world through this correspondence, as distant as one can imagine from the gospel values of simplicity, poverty, and total dependence on God.
This style of episcopal living was a blueprint for both personal, and eventual ecclesial destruction. To put it another way, ‘a ticking time-bomb that would begin razing the Church to the ground’.
It’s good to know that present-day bishops, like Noel Treanor, are fully in tune with the lessons taught by this particular school of history, and are living in ways more reminiscent of Christ himself.

Like

The money was spent on vestments not holidays to villas in Spain, the priests and bishops lived in big houses full of statues not mobile phones and TVs, money was usually fed back to their families rather than to ‘ friends’.

Like

Oh, church accounts back then may not have financed such modern accessories as mobile phones and smart tvs, and such luxuries as holidays to villas in Spain; but every era has its equivalents, and 1968 is no exception.

I’m reminded of a post earlier this year by MMM. His uncle, a canon, purchased such fine curtains for his first presbytery as a parish priest that one of MMM’s aunts remarked that more had been spent on those curtains alone than she and her husband had spent on furnishing their first home.

I’m not surprised that at least some of these men were able, as you said, to feed money back to their families: they had no shortage of it.

Yes, telling indeed.

Like

Oh! So it was all okay then?
Following Down’s All Ireland successful early ’60’s seasons ordinary people could scarcely manage to get a meal in Dublin or Dundalk: everywhere bunged with priests getting priority to fill their fat faces. Good that things have changed……..a little!

Unfortunately I was not friends with them but I never heard a bad thing about them. I only knew them from Mass’s and Confirmations I attended when they were the celebrants and they were magnificent. Wynne’s Hotel was still the venue of choice for clergy and nuns well into the 1980s. As a seminarian up from Maynooth one Sunday in 1989 I had Dover Sole for the first time in my life.
My fellow sem diners used to play “spot the nun”. You could see them a mile off. We called them the topless nuns, their veils having been thrown into the skip.

@10.43am Poor Mournful Mick shows his true colours again with another outlandish claim as per. Nobody could get a meal between Dublin and Dundalk he claims because of clergy? That’s one hell of a radius!! For an atheist you sure take such an interest in clergy and Church matters. I detect unresolved religious issues, namely being chucked out of Seminary. Sounds familiar like so many contributors on this blog.

Like

Anon@ 11:49: I really did laugh at your comment: honestly. Your powers of detection might just be as useful as your powers of deduction.
You, and various other others have referred to ex seminarians having been “chucked out.” There seems to be a self satisfying justification present in some clerical commentators of this ilk, and, I wonder, to what extent some of them regret that they didn’t have the balls to quit of their own volition.
For myself, I made the decision to leave mid was through 3rd Divinity, after about the third or fourth time going to the spiritual director to discuss my increasing deep founded uncertainties about the nature of the RC church and my own proposed role in promoting stuff I seriously doubted as valid. He could give no sensible answers to what I thought then, and still do, were very reasonable questions.
I chose not to bury my head in the sand, have never had any regrets. 50+ years later I know it was the right thing to do. I’ve yet to meet a former classmate who regretted leaving, but have met several who were ordained, subsequently regretted it, and quit, and others who in confidence tell me their 50+ years priesthood has been a waste of a good life, disenchanted and trapped in an institution they have lost faith and belief in.
“There but for the grace of…….”: if you believe in that sort of thing!

1.02: Good for you MMM that you made your decisions of your own volition. And undoubtedly you were successful in your chosen field of work. Yes, it is very easy to become disillusioned as a priest in today’s broken, dysfunctional church and in an increasingly secular, multi faith and pluralist society. However difficult the challenge, surely you must give some affirmation to the many clerics who try their utmost to live the gospel, those who give of themselves for the good of others, those who remain with Christ alone and not give adherence to the institution. The crises of recent decades have made me rethink priesthood and ministry. I think it’s unfair to appear to delight in the struggles and disillusionment of others, who, despite the temptation to leave priesthood, continue to find relevance and meaning in their ministry. Scorn, ridicule and mockery should not exist in your lexicon.

Why would Down priests be celebrating in Dublin and Dundalk for weeks on end, MMM or is it an outlandish claim?

Like

Okay: To make it simple for you, and 11:49 above already corrected by MC, I’ll explain: not outlandish A. @1:23, but from personal observation.
On those early 1960s Sundays when Down played in Dublin, it seemed many priests from northern counties, especially Down, Armagh and Cavan, made it a big day out mostly for PPs leaving the curates to undertake their Sunday parish duties. The clergy always seemed able to get the better seated tickets for the Hogan stand, and, after the match, to adjourn to their favourite Dublin and Dundalk eating venues: the Clarence, Adelphi and Ballymascanlon being prime examples. They often had an “advance form” of tipping: nods and winks to waiting room staff with words in their ear while notes pressed into hands seemed the modus operandi to be quietly ushered forward to next available table, or one “reserved.” Few, if any priests would be seen at ordinary cafes: it was nothing but the best for them, and tucking into mixed grills seemed their favourite. That there was so many priests seeking, and getting this preferential treatment while ordinary Joe Bloggs had to queue was a common source of disgruntlement at the time summed up by the oft repeated comment: “Bloody priests everywhere living high on the hog!”

Yes, indeed. And it is not stretching credibility too far to say that these bishops were very likely at the heart of concealing these abuses, and of brushing aside victims and the safety of other children.

From this correspondence, these were worldly men, to whom gospel values were a pretense and a show, and things only to be knowledgeable about. They wouldn’t have cared a fig for the children of the hoi-polloi, who likely constituted the majority of those raped, sodomised, or otherwise sexually molested or ill-treated by priests and religious.

While tittle tattle about erstwhile bishops is interesting and diverting, what is more significant is bishops who think that they can act autocratically and in almost totalitarian and fascist ways. Read this about a Jesuit Catholic High School in Indianapolis, and the silly bishop who is inflicting hardline interpretation of Catholic ethos and teaching on this school. Mind you, he may have bitten off more than he can chew, because the SJs are standing their ground. Rightly so. The pushing of hardline, ultra orthodox so called Catholic teaching by this bishop is a disgrace. Yes, he can find all sorts of documents to back up his case, and interpret them to his cause, but in reality this bishop simply does not understand the world, his parishioners, Catholics in this day and age, and above all how to deal sensitively, pastorally and compassionately with a nuanced world and people. What a twat !

Rhymed with, I think, rover; it’s all a bit of a blur now.
Never mind.

“I left my intention at home……” Really? Doesn’t inspire confidence, or competence, that your god, or whoever you “offer” your Mass to doesn’t already know, or can’t work out “the intention!”
Aw gwan, gwan, gwan: shurely yer pulling our legs now?

Mullingar Martin. Hi. Sorry no! I did honestly leave my book behind, but I will catch up again tomorrow. God would have known, but I like to mention them by name during my Mass if possible. My memory for these things isn’t as sharp as it used to be!

Magna darling, I was wondering why your new underpants were in such vibrant stripes and now I know! Unfortunately, (mummy searched the exact colours online) you’ve picked the asexual pride flag. Another disappointment!

Mumsy Carta is colour blind. Those “vibrant stripes” are the result of Magsy Wagsy’s indifferent hygiene.
