POLITICIAN WANTS CATHOLIC CHURCHES TO ERECT SIGNS OUTSIDE THEIR CHURCHES WARNING THAT THE BUILDINGS ARE DANGEROUS FOR CHILDREN.

By K Thor Jensen Newsweek.

Melbourne City Council member Nic Frances Gilley has introduced a proposal to require Catholic churches to comply with the province of Victoria’s new mandatory abuse reporting laws or have signs posted outside warning parents that the houses of worship might pose a danger to children.

NIC GILLEY

The Age reports that Gilley is requesting the state “write to all churches and places of worship requesting assurances that all staff and associates will abide by the law of mandatory reporting,” and if they do not provide those assurances the state should erect appropriate signage.

In September, Victoria passed the Children Legislation Amendment Act 2019, which added religious leaders to the list of individuals who are legally mandated to report child abuse to the authorities when they learn about it. That list already included police, teachers, nurses, midwives and other occupations.

Many Catholic leaders are protesting the law because it includes abuse admitted within the space of the confessional. In July, the Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary released a statement pushing back against it, saying that “Any political action or legislative initiative aimed at breaking the inviolability of the sacramental seal would constitute an unacceptable offence against the (freedom of the Church).”

Gilley said it was the government’s responsibility to “clearly advise people of the risks of using such institutions.”

Councilor Gilley has a personal stake in this conversation. He was an Anglican priest for 23 years, rising to the position of executive director of the Brotherhood of St Laurence. He left the church in 2008, penning an open letter in which he revealed that he was sexually abused as a child.

Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Sally Capp supports the resolution. She told Radio 3AW “Our main aim is to make sure we have safe places, particularly for children, throughout our city.”

In August, Melbourne’s Catholic Archbishop Peter Comensoli told ABC Radio that he would choose to go to jail rather than break the “seal” of the confessional booth. He would encourage a person who confessed to child abuse to report themselves to police but would not take action on anything said inside.

Mother of two sexual assault victims Chrissie Foster had stern words for church leadership, telling The Age, “Archbishop Comensoli says quite proudly that he’d rather go to jail than break the seal of confession. He’s chosen to protect paedophiles instead of children. That’s business as usual for the church.”

Sexual assault in the church is a charged issue in Victoria. In 2018, Cardinal George Pell was convicted of five charges of sexual assault on two boys, becoming the most senior official of the church to be jailed for abuse. His conviction helped survivors push for more stringent reporting laws.
The council will vote on Gilley’s proposal Tuesday.

PATS SAYS

If the law of the land says that priests have to report sexual abuse in confession – then that’s what they have to do or go to court and jail.

The Australian law of the land operates in Australia, not RCC canon law.

It’s the church’s own fault for mishandling of clerical sexual abuse.

The Catholic Church and the term Paedophilia have now come to mean the same thing

There should also be obligatory sign posts outside Catholic seminaries saying

THIS INSTITUTION IS A SEXUAL, PHYSICAL AND MORAL DANGER TO YOUNG MEN.

The RCC is now regarded as a sexual and corruption mafia.

HURRAH FOR GILLEY’S PROPOSAL!
Why are the Romanists so opposed to this? Can’t you guess? These Christ-betrayers are at the heart of the moral filth infecting the Roman Catholic Church.
The more Romanists in prison for disobeying laws that protect the most vulnerable in society, the better I say.
Who is your concern? Christ-betraying Romanists? Or innocent children?

And at St John’s Seminary, Wonersh, they should erect signs
“DANGER! Enter at your own risk”
Actually, every seminary should be forced to erect such sign.

This is where putting the interests, reputation and status of the institutional Church and clergy has led as a result of a systemic policy of cover up. Good priests, who kept their mouths shut out of loyalty to the Institution for whatever reasons, might end up in prison before too long. Safety of children is paramount. The institutional Church cannot be trusted. A sad state of affairs.

Yes, the so-called ‘good’ priests have all have facilitated child-sexual abuse, because they all put Church law above divine law.

Be wary of the ‘holy’ men, the Romanists. Self-serving as ever, they will attempt to spin Gilley’s proposal as impending martyrdom for priests.

It must never be forgotten that these men protected serial paedophiles among their number…and they are prepared to go on doing so in defiance of the Law. This fact (and it must be repeated, again and again) should make it easier to tolerate the imprisonment of nen who are, in reality, nothing more than paedophile protectors/enablers.

It is a sign of the times reflecting a huge seismic shift in perceptions about the Cathiolic Church. The church’s response to the abuse scandals worldwide is anything but morally good, right and acceptable. Had the Church as an institution embraced the Christ-vision of caring for the little ones and the most vulnerable, as a paramount vietue and principle, we would not be listening to requests for putting such signs on church doors and gates! And by the Christ-vision I mean a zero tolerance for any deviant abuser, report to civil authorities, an immediate laicization of perpetrators, criminal investigation where necessary, an immediate resignation of any Bishop who covered up and his ministry to be one of penance, if not a prison sentence where complicit endangerment and facilitation are proven. I say this in earnest and seriousness because such radical action may be the beginning of a rebuilding of some new Catholic Christian community. After 30 years of ministry I wonder at times why I am still in ministry. Only that I have a deep faith, a deep trust in God (often in great darkness), a belief in the essence of the gospel message and an appreciation of the opportunities given to me to make some difference to people’s lives, I would be in greater despair….Each morning I awake asking “why, Lord? why?”.. But I quickly gather myself together and wonder about the thousands whose faith, trust, self belief, personal lives have all been broken because of sexual abuse and simply pray for them. Having that horrible experience of sexual abuse as a teenager, I know something of their daily realities but it is the Church’s leadership that troubles me most, angrily with deep despair. If ever such a sign was made mandatory, I’ll come to Larne!

Like

If by ‘come to Larne’ you mean leave the RC church and join the oratory or another denomination in Protestant Larne, what are you waiting for? In Australia it is obvious neither side will back down so those signs will be going up!
It is also obvious that the hierarchy will take it as another opportunity to claim persecution, conveniently forgetting that as you rightly say, this is their own creation.
You may choose to differ but I am clear that I would rather be on Gilley’s side when it comes to facing human or divine justice.

Not only has the Church brought all this upon itself, it has been pretty brutal about taking the so-called moral high ground and abusing its power when in a position to do so.

Those who prevent scandal coming to little ones are following the gospel imperative, doing what is morally and legally right, as well as exemplifying humanity. That’s what the Lord expects, desires and wills. That doesn’t make them favourites of God. From a Christian perspective, it illustrates discipleship, to be expected of genuine followers of Jesus Christ.

I hope that some Romanists ARE prosecuted for breaking this law and sent to prison, and it can’t happen soon enough. If it does, the Romanists will no doubt whine that they are marytrs and heroes, but the subtext will make clear the grounds for these claims: by further protecting paedophiles.
This is a PR battle the Romanists can’t win, especially with their vile and long history of paedophile-protection.
If the Romanists resist this law (and they have already started with that bullish remark by Comensoli, and the denouncement by the Apostolic Penitentiary), they will only institutionalise, in Australia at least, their reputation as paedophile protectors/ enablers. It makes absolutely hilarious the suggestion the other day by Cardinal Turkson that the Church needs to exit the child-sexual abuse criminality and to stop saying ‘sorry’ for its crimes.
The problem, however, is finding out which Romanists have not divulged to police details about someone who confessed to paedophilia. How are the police to know. I think Nic Gilley is aware of this problem: he knows that the Romanists will continue to protect/enable paedophiles under the guise of respecting the so-called ‘Seal of the Confessional’, so he has decided to publicly name and shame the institutional Church for its intended law-breaking and for wilfully continuing to place children, and others, in great danger.

Magna Carta insists that Roman Catholic priests are Christ Betrayers. In that case, he will not attend Mass or receive the sacraments from them. Will he tell us how he follows Christ? It would interest others of us who are disillusioned with the Church.

Behind your post is the presumption that the sacraments are the property of the Christ-betrayers; they are not.

The nature of the sacraments are not changed through their being administered by the Christ-betrayers.

And your presumption that one cannot follow Christ without attending these sacraments is equally nonsensical: God is not confined to the sacramental boundaries of the Roman Catholic Church, nor is grace doled out by the Christ-betrayers, but by Christ himself. And he is everywhere.

MC is right. One can have a perfectly good relationship with God without the Sacraments.

2.41: A good question for the right honourable Lady Magna Carta. I doubt if “it” would have the courage of its convictions to not attend mass or to tell a priest to his face publicly in front of a congregation that he is a “Christ betrayer” or a “potential paedophile/ abuser or paedophile protector”. This would require real, true courage which this coward does not possess. And, were “it” to do as I envisage, I know who would be flung out of the Church first – the mad, demented, coward Magna. So, La La Carta, show the TRUE COURAGE OF YOUR CONVICTIONS and head to the nearest Church….Let us know the outcome, you nasty piece of humanity.

Seriously, ‘Father’?

I’d like to think that you’re intelligent enough to have made that comment tongue in cheek, since it is stupefyingly shot through with contradictions; but I don’t think you are and that you did.

Where to start? You doubt I have the courage not to attend Mass. Well, if you’d read my post at 4.00, without that dense red mist in front of your eyes impairing your vision, you would have remembered what I said about the availability of grace: it is not confined to the sacraments of the Roman Cathoilc Church. The Mass is simply one conduit of grace, but it isn’t the only one; nor are all of these others available only in this church. So why would I need courage not to attend Mass?

And then there is your hypocrisy. (And boy does it reek!) You criticise me for making such remarks as ‘Christ-betrayers’ anonymously…while you express criticism of me, er, anonymously. Yes, you really do write to impress, don’t you?

And you call me ‘coward’ for lacking the courage to tell priests (any priest) face to face, in front of their congregations, that they are Christ-betrayers, and potential child-abusers…while you fail to tell ME this face to face. I can’ tell you how impressed I am with YOUR courage.

You’re in a glasshouse, ‘Father’, and you’ve broken many panes today with those wildly flung stones.

Like

It does not take any courage at all not to attend Mass. You can find God through prayer.

If you knew how often MMM has criticised me (and even called for my banning from this blog), you wouldn’t have posted that vacuous remark about the two of us.

And I have indeed looked into my soul, many times, and found it wanting…for the Lord. But I have not found him in ANY of your priests.

Hence the cynicism. (Do forgive my unvarnished honesty.)

At this point there is only one option left to the church, since its leaders seem to be incapable of actually dealing with the protracted image disaster formed by their own inability to manage their personnel. It is the last ditch resort of every dodgy business whose reputation is mud and account books a train wreck – REBRAND!
Simply call it by a different name, change it legally, and everyone will be taken in and believe the bullshit about good priests and works of charity.

Meath diocese took up practically half of the Joe Duffy show today on the radio. The presenter said the station got in touch with the catholic communications office to find out if the rule is still in place not to have a eulogy at funeral. They are allowed in many dioceses.
