CCMS / DOWN AND CONNOR SCHOOL CRISIS UPDATE

THIS CATHOLIC SCHOOL CRISIS WITH VERY SINISTER MACHINATIONS IS THE BIGGEST STORY THIS BLOG HAS COVERED.

IT COULD TAKE WEEKS FOR THE STORY TO UNFOLD BUT IN THE MEANTIME PEOPLE ARE IN REAL PHYSICAL DANGER!

“Dear Bishop Pat,
Thank you for meeting me this morning at your home in Larne. Here is the email that you asked me to send to you to highlight the situation regarding my sibling who is in a current dispute along with other teachers, a situation that you have raised in recent days in your blog.
For much of their professional career my sibling has taught within the school that you speak of. For many years my sibling loved their job, the school and the area in which they have worked. Over the years I have read the cards from parents and children alike in which they have appreciated their kindness, professionalism and joy in teaching.
There was never an issue or any dispute with my sibling. They thrived in the classroom and their passion and vocation for education consumed their life.
This all changed two year ago when a negative culture emerged within the school. My sibling and other teachers were subjected to horrific practices. In the end they were called out on strike by their union. This decision to strike was a very difficult decision to make and went against the grain of every professional instinct that my sibling holds dear. In the end they followed the directive of their union. They were the first school in Northern Ireland, I believe in 25 years, to have gone on strike outside a national dispute, and this in itself reveals the seriousness of issues the union were addressing within the school.
I would like your readers to know that this issue, which I first raised with you on Wednesday in Belfast, is not about a common in house (School Matter) regarding school politics etc….
When they were on strike something happened. You know what it is Pat, but to protect my sibling I will keep the details confidential. The events that happened at first were not noticed, but after several months the truth came out.
The truth forced my sibling and other teachers onto the sick.
I cannot speak for the other teachers, but the mental impact upon my sibling has had a detrimental impact on their mental health. I don’t know what a nervous breakdown looks like but I believe my sibling has had one. What happed on that picket line has left my sibling living in fear. I stress the word FEAR. They are now a shadow of their former selves.
No one, with the exception of their union, has stopped to ask if they are ok. No one from the schools board of governors has been in contact. No one from the catholic church has been in contact.
My sibling’s Occupational Health doctor stated that this the worst situation she had ever heard in over 10 years of referrals.
My sibling is receiving counselling and therapy to deal with the aftermath of what has happened.
My sibling is meeting regularly with their GP and local practice nurse.
My sibling did nothing wrong. A great scandalous wrong had been done to them.
My sibling is being forced down to half pay and risks losing their home and is talking about food banks to make ends meet.
My sibling is being told that they don’t have to go down to half pay and could return  to the school, but they know that this will be end of them.
My sibling and the other teachers are asking for two things – For their income to be protected and for a timely transfer away from an environment that has destroyed them.
This is a scandal that I cannot sit back and watch. In life there is right and wrong. A great wrong was done and it is being compounded by CCMS and the Board Of Governors.
Bishop Treanor, you have the power to end this. You have the power to do the right thing. In the name of Jesus I beg for you to intervene and to end this once and for all. The situation for my sibling cannot continue. End this the proper way for them and the other teachers involved”.

PAT SAYS

I want my readers to fully understand that this dispute is not a run of the mill school problem.

In my 49 years in the church I have never come across such a massive injustice and scandal.

Its like a chapter from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Quite literally spies are involved!!! I mean that!

There are “ghosts” in this situation. People working in the dark corridors of power – people who do not want their names mentioned or photographs displayed.

Here are the moral questions these “holy ghosts” should be asking:

  1. Is it morally right that these teachers are being cut down to half pay?
  2. Is it morally right that in this day and age teachers should be going to food banks to feed their children?
  3. Is it morally right that they could lose their homes?
  4. Is it morally right that their professional reputations should be destroyed?
  5. Is it morally right that they are suffering from PTSD – Post Traumatic Strees Disorder and in trauma therapy?

Hey you “Holy Ghosts; Yes, I’m talking to you. You know who you are! There are two ways to sort out this massive scandal – the right way and the wrong way.

If you have any Christian charity you will do the right thing.

And finally, can I ask you to read and reread the Edmund Rice Schools Trust charter (taken from the world wide webb)

Nurturing faith, Christian spirituality and Gospel-based values;
Promoting partnership;
Excelling in teaching and learning;
Creating a caring school community;
Inspiring transformational leadership.

I worked in a ‘catholic school’ for a year and was subjected to the most horrendous verbal abuse from both students and teachers. I made three attempts to inform the bishop of the Diocese, who is patron, but he would not reply to my messages, despite telling his secretary it was urgent that I speak with him. I informed a member of the board who is a priest who told me ‘maybe it’s you and not the school’. Now, I’m all open for self evaluation and critiquing my teaching etc, but this was a ridiculous situation. I can’t go into much detail right now. I can do next year.

5 months from now. I have had much support from those I have told about this with one priest telling me I should bypass Ireland and take it direct to the Congregation for catholic education

I can confirm I know this individual and I am aware of the disturbing nature of this experience. This story is truly horrendous and a resigning matter for the bishop of this Diocese – no question about it. I personally stand over this story. I call upon this bishop to submit his resignation to Pope Francis. RTE prime time investigates would have a field day.

I have heard a similar story. it might be doing the rounds. were talking a western diocese, right?. things get around in Catholic education.

shame on that bishop, shame on him. telling a bishops secretary that a teachers call is urgent should warrant a bishop to contact that teacher immediately. it could be a child protection issue for god sake. I for one would love to know this bishop and I would bombard him with letters. though being an Irish bishop he probably has no conscience and lives the good life

Something needs done to highlight this injustice . We’re is the pastoral care for these teachers ? Why are we putting up with the incompetence of CCCMS who are employing principals that are creating havoc in the education of our children .

this is a very serious comment and I can only assume that being the responsible citizen you are, you have reported this to the police?

+Pat I can’t comment on rights or wrongs or moral issues here. How can I, or anybody, without any facts concerning the issues?
You’ve only given what in essence are opinions, and that factually whatever has happened has caused illness resulting in pay cuts etc. Such pay cuts seem a common occurrence in long term illness in the public sector so nothing unusual here regardless of cause of the illness.
I’m certainly not unsympathetic in cases of poor or bullying management for I’ve seen plenty of it, but not knowing the issues here makes valid comment speculative.
At this early stage I question the adviseability of you blogging it.

Pastoral care! Pastoral care, in my experience, depends on who you are and what the issue involved.
If the issue involves scandal involving a cleric, forget about pastoral care.

Sadly Pat you have only been given one side of the story. ask why the concerned teacher didn’t go straight to the national papers. because they would dig deeper. don’t be fooled. don’t take things for granted. don’t make unnecessary journeys and don’t take risks on treacherous roads.

Thank you for these very honest posts. I also have a family member who works at this school. To answer your questions I think that it’s totally unacceptable that these teachers would have to have their pay cut. Why should they they suffer when they have done nothing wrong? I don’t think anyone can understand what those particular teachers have faced. I know they are not the only ones in the school that have experienced unwarranted behaviours but to have been subjected to surveillance on top is unacceptable.

Like

Two reports have been published on this dispute – a general report in August and a report on surveillance in July. Both reports exonerate the teachers.

Are republicans (the IRA, for example) involved here? Smearing the reputations of these striking teachers? With the full knowledge, and support, of the CCMS, including Bishop Noel Treanor?

And I invariably vote “against” the Tories. While I agree with some, a little, of the Tory promotion of reward for individual enterpreneurial efforts in a market economy, I despise current Tory “weakest are dispensable” social mandate and legislation and demonisation of the weak and vulnerable. So previously elsewhere I’ve mostly voted Labour in agreement with their social policies, even though I disagree with some of their stances.
Here, in N. Ire. my sentiments are towards republicanism and an eventual united Ireland. But I do recognise the concerns of the long settled Unionist community now having to face up to an inevitability of demographic changes forcing them into a minority stance and uncomfortable acquiescence to the majority perspective. But irrespective of that, their previous gerrymandered dominance carries no requirement for its perpetual continuation.
I do have conflicting feelings of reservation about Siin Fein’s refusal to sit in Westminster at this key historical juncture. While admiring their principles, I just wonder about the tactics at such a key moment. From that perspective of their abstinence from Westminster involvement, I’m more inclined to vote SDLP to ensure meaningful votes where it counts, even in a Westminster chamber for which I have little respect, but am obliged to accept as having control in the meanwhile.
One MP, I do have respect for is Sylvia Hermon, a woman of intelligence and principled promotion of her perspectives, even though my own future aspirations may differ.

What jumped out at me is surveillance. That is very unusual coming from a catholic school if im correct. Bullying is common in any school but in this day and age, it should be reported outside Bling Treanor.

I take it that board of management chairman is a priest? if that is the case, why is he doing all these mentioned in the above.

Problem is this – full facts not known yet here in this forum bit of one sided story. Every story has two sides. Hope this would be solved. Bullying and threats have no place especially coming from the top- board of management.

Is any of the parents aware of this re shortage of teachers as teachers gone sick etc.

Bp Pat, I am none the wiser, but could the “sibling” be… well, let’s just say, a friend of Amy? I wonder.

If they are going to half pay then their Union should top up. In addition, they would likely receive Injury benefit to top up their pay, so no need for food banks. Injury benefit makes up the difference.

10.25: This is about the most sensible thing you’ve said so far. Pat, does the school in question know you are talking about them on the blog? What about data protection regulations? Surely they are being breached? Also, do the 6 teachers know they are the subject of your blog? Just curious.

Like

Pat, MMM makes a valid observation at 7.58. Without the full story it is inappropriate to be making wild, speculative judgments. In some public spheres it is not uncommon for salary reduction in the event of poor performance, lack of co-eperative respinsibility and absenteeism. Having worked on school boards for almost 40 years, some problems are very complex and the dynamics can be fraught with tension, mistrust and fear. If it is a bullying or abuse, then that is contemptible and must be reported. If people are in real physical danger, why aren’t you or the relative of a teacher going to the PSNI? Pat, you have the capacity to embellish this story. You should not do this. Let the truth be communicated. Then we can offer perspectives and comments. That you are encouraging an onslaught of speculative commentary is inadvisable and inexcusable. You are only hearing one side of a story. Sadly, you will use this story to manufacture anti Catholic bias and venom. If there is any internal investigation or mediation in process, your intrusion is unhelpful and may very well prejudice any investigation. It’s been my experience in some instances where teachers unions were inflexible, unhelpful and too tolerant of very incompetent principals and teachers. There is a bigger picture that I feel is not being told. I may be wrong….but I’m observant and wise enough to appreciate the complexity of dynamics within schools. I could write a book about some of my experiences.

MMM, the poster at 9:25pm didn’t identify the key issues in this case, but made general
remarks on the type of issues that occur from his\her experience on school boards.
In my opinion, Bishop Pat is right to highlight this issue , particularly if people are in physical
danger, or if their human rights have been violated. ( I have on reason to doubt Bishop Pats integrity on the matter). There’s been far too much covering up of all sorts of injustices/ human rights violations, by those in positions of power. Many people, literally, have no one to turn to due to so much corruption in so many arms of the State.

Nothing surprises me, as I know one Catholic comprehensive in central England where at least nine teachers were subjected to sustained bullying. Eventually the LEA did step in to remove the Principal and entire governing body. NB it took the secular authority to act in a toxic environment where Catholic values were supposedly promoted and trumpeted by the Head.

Like

From your experience in England, it implies that any religion have no place in education except for in their area which they are in whether it be a protestant, catholic, hindu et al. Education school should be strictly reserved for education only and keep out religion. So that boundaries would be very clear to us.

Like

religious education IS EDUCATION. we have a duty, indeed a responsibility, to teach children about ALL faiths. you’re one of those fools who think religion in schools is all about catechism. its not!!!!!

Like

Increasingly ,in a whole range of issues and matters concerning the Roman Catholic Church in particular, secular authorities are beginning to take an interest and to act, on the basis that the RC Church has proven itself incapable of ordering its own affairs and regulating itself. We have seen this in the matter of safeguarding and the clerical sexual abuse scandal, and we see it also in education.
The direction of movement in so many secular constituencies is to view the RC Church as no longer benign and to see it as an object of suspicion and wrongdoing in so many matters. In the UK the IICSA inquiry has not finished with the RC Church and will drill down even further in to the criminal dysfunction that lurks within the ranks of bishops and clergy.
It will be interesting to see if secular authorise take an interest in some of the dysfunctional antics that are reported as taking place in seminaries, both in the UK and elsewhere. We have heard about odd goings on and inadequate leadership in some English seminaries; there is a long history of dysfunction in Maynooth; in the USA various seminaries have been put under the spotlight; there is documented abuse and manipulation of seminararians by powerful church figures like McCarrick and O’Brien for their own warped purposes. It is only a matter of time before secular authorities, even the police, take an interest in these matters and decide that the RC Church is incapable of dealing with things and managing themselves. That will be a good step and will help to ensure safety for all, which cannot be said to be the case at the moment. Would you send a young man in to a seminary, knowing what you know ?

Like

Good post @ 9:14am.
I would NOT send a young man to a seminary. There needs to be an independent investigation into abuses in seminary’s.

Like

And, in addition, seminary training is not fit for purpose in providing the priests of the future – semi monastic, isolated, little pastoral connection, all male, inadequate personal and human development, bad theology, and poor leadership and mentoring. As well as all the odd shenanigans we know go on between students themselves, and between staff and students.Need I say more ? Surely, bishops should know this, and should take responsibility to ensure that their parishes are provided with priests who are properly trained and formed. The Counter Reformation / Council of Trent model, which essentially is still in existence, is not the model to provide the healthy, integrated and grounded priests we need for the future. Some of the more sane religious orders have begun to train men in the community with a more much grounded experience, although some have retrenched and moved back to the old traditional model. I know which model produces the best priests and religious.

Dear Deaf user. please be aware that a Catholic Bishop has a right to write a letter to a catholic school and if that school does not wish to be catholic then it may choose to do so, with parents consent. A Catholic bishop has a right to speak to a catholic people, in a catholic school, practising a catholic faith, outlining a pastoral response to an issue that’s been raised. End of.

Like

At 12.45 a.m.
It’s not as simple as you are attempting to make it. There are plenty of practices in use in Christian churches today which had their origins outside of Christianity.

Saint John Henry Cardinal Newman wrote in his 1878 “Essay on the Development of Doctrine” : ‘The use of temples, and these dedicated to particular saints, and ornamented on occasions with branches of trees; incense, lamps and candles; votive offerings on recovery from illness; holy water; asylums; holy days and seasons, use of calendars, processions, blessings on the fields, sacerdotal vestments, the tonsure, the ring in marriage, turning to the east, images at a later date, perhaps the ecclesiastical chant, and the Kyrie Eleison, are all of pagan origin and sanctified by their adoption into the Church.’

It is also reasonable to assume that most, if not all of the other bishops in Ireland are embarrassed at Phonsie’s forays into the public domain. One needs to remember only the debacle of the vaccination some time ago.

The tone of your reaction to the earlier commentator is most objectionable.

7.49: Pat, the dramatics of your responses await a crescendo of a finale? It seems to me that we are getting just one side of a story. If as you say the teachers were exonerated, why are they remaining silent and not making any public noises? Teachers have very strong, powerful unions who are not afraid to speak about any grievances, wrongs or injustices committed against their members. There is a part of this story that we still need to hear about before making sweeping conclusive judgments. If you have that information you owe it in justice to share it and I would be very surprised, indeed shocked, if the teachers are letting you be their spokesperson.

Like

All unions in the UK are shadows of their former selves, so, though it is essential to belong to a teachers’ union, schools can use all kinds of underhand strategies to bully – and they do! Remember too that “Catholicity” is a weapon to use against teachers viz dismissals of gay teachers in USA, which would not be possible in a state school.

Apart from the bullying of the staff, the children in this inner city school are from one of the most socially deprived areas in the North and their education is bound to be affected, further depriving them of advancement. Does the management of this school think it is ethical to destroy teachers mental health and have children as collateral damage. Meanwhile bishop bling would call this a Catholic school.
