PRIEST DEFENDS COMMENTS ABOUT MINI EXORCISMS.

Fr Michael Doyle critical of person who leaked remark from his sermon

David Looby Wexford People.

The priest who said he planned to perform mini exorcisms on young Poulfur parishioners in their homes ahead of their Confirmation has stood by his comments, saying he would expect more of parishioners who reported the matter to the media.

Fr Michael Doyle told his congregation at St Aidan’s Church in Poulfur on Sunday week ago that he planned to perform mini exorcisms while visiting children who will be celebrating their Confirmation next year.

Fr Doyle’s comments have been published in media outlets across the world over recent days, something he finds astonishing.

Fr Doyle, 50, said he was not referring to performing formal exorcisms, but to placing ‘a blessing on the family home against evil’.

The diocese of Ferns confirmed that it had received a number of complaints from parents in the area about Fr Doyle’s comments and that it had referred the matter to the diocese’s vicar-general, Monsignor Joe McGrath.

‘When I was using the term “exorcism” that’s what I meant,’ he said. ‘Not an exorcism in the formal way. Just a family blessing on the home.’

He said he performs the rite as part of the usual programme of religious practises he performs for Baptism, Communion and Confirmation.

‘This is part of my spiritual work for both groups (communion and confirmation) for every single child. I do a visitation programme with families.’

His usual practice with children who are receiving the sacraments of Holy Communion or Confirmation is that he sends a statue of the Sacred Heart home with a different child each week and the family is invited to use the statue ‘as a focal point for family prayer’. ‘I obviously don’t just force myself on them. I ask to be invited and I give the respective family the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I ask them if I can bless them (the children). If they so desire I can have their house blessed with a blessing for the family and their home.

The blessing is against evil.’
Fr Doyle said he mentioned minor exorcism at the 11.30 a.m. Mass, adding that he probably never used the term before but decided to go with it because he likes to joke around and keep his sermons light.

‘I was being humorous, I joke around quite a bit and that was lost in translation (in the reports). I could have been misunderstood or misinterpreted. It’s not like the Exorcist movie. I think I’d be scared of that myself.’

A local resident who attended the Mass confirmed that Fr Doyle said he would be visiting local houses and encouraged parents to build up the number of prayers they say with their child to a decade of the Rosary.

Speaking to this newspaper Fr Doyle said he told parents of first Holy Communion and Confirmation children in the parish of Templetown that he would like to visit their homes to carry out blessings, but only by prior arrangement. He joked that he is expecting a call from the owner of Loftus Hall to book him in for his Hallowe’en Lock Down events this week.

Fr Doyle said he has already written to parents to clarify the matter. ‘As soon as I got the word, I could see there was some misunderstanding.’

From Terrerath, Fr Doyle was previously chaplain at Wexford General Hospital and PP of St Leonards for four years. He was also a curate in Texas for many years. When asked how he felt about all of the publicity, Fr Doyle said he was amazed by the way the story made it out into the media, adding that it was ignoble sort of thing to do.

‘The noble sort of thing would have been to contact the person directly. I was trying to enjoy my day off but it was ruined by a call from the Bishop’s office at 11. I would say the Saltee Islands will be my next parish.’

Fr Doyle has been parish priest of Poulfur for several months and said he is enjoying his time serving the area. He said he is acutely aware of the dark influence Fr Sean Fortune had on the parish during his campaign of sexual abuse terror in the 1980s. ‘Of course people are going to be sensitive to what happened 30 years ago. For them it’s not something that happened in the past. It’s not historic, it’s very personal to them so you have to be very sensitive in those situations, especially where it’s domestic violence or sexual abuse. You would be very conscious of people who have been deeply hurt or wounded totally unjustly. We can’t be guilty by association with him.’

Fr Doyle defended his policy of calling to people’s homes, saying it is utterly extraordinary how the exorcism comment has gathered such traction in the media.

‘When I was in St Leonards I did exactly the very same thing. The child came up at Mass and they prayed with their families and I joined them. I wasn’t any big deal.’
When asked if he had used the term exorcism while in St Leonards, he replied that he had not.

Fr Doyle said he will not change his approach to his sermons so Poulfur parishioners can expect plenty more interesting sermons over the coming months and years, providing the move to the Saltees doesn’t pan out. ‘There have been people ringing me in support of me. I haven’t had any adverse reaction to this. You would hope people would have had a little bit more knowledge about their faith. I don’t think what I said is controversial. As regards sermons I will continue to preach as I usually do, with humour. I try not to make people fall asleep in the pew. This happened. It comes with the territory.’

This is not the first time Fr Doyle has shot to media attention. Reacting to a post on Facebook by former New Ross Municipal District council Cathaoirleach Cllr Willie Fitzharris praising the success of the summer school in 2018, Fr Doyle, who was then stationed in St Leonards parish said: ‘For the promotion of the death of children. Yes, that is very cultural. The culture of death. It reminds one of a gathering of Nazis self congratulating themselves.’

PAT SAYS

Who is this ejit dressed in black and green, and wanting to put the devil out of all the children and parents in his parish.

Is he a reincarnation of the nut case paedophile Sean Fortune?

Why is the bishop of Ferns and his clergy allowing this dressed up Haloween clown to have the freedom to prey on the Wexford people?

Have they learned nothing from the damning Ferns Report?

It seems to me that the RCC has become the refuge for people who years ago would have been housed in lunatic asylums.

Is the RCC the new Duffys Circus?

Some very interesting stats here
Arundel and Brighton diocese has for instance;
1- One Bishop subject to Covenants of Care/ Safeguarding Plans
2- Five Priests subject to Covenants of Care/Safeguarding Plans
3- Arundel and Brighton commits 19% of its curial budget to Safeguarding
Compared with the stats for the other diocese’ it is very high

Fat , jokey and intruding into people’s lives. The Church permits non Catholics to receive communion at a wedding so why insist on a programme of preparation for any of the Sacraments? Isn’t there a Catholic school to do that anyway? No the priest wants to be the centre of attention so much so that he’s happy to make a joke about exorcism to entertain, no wonder people are confused they haven’t heard a reference to the supernatural in fifty years. There’s a clear disconnection between his jovial manner in the interview and the photo wearing the soutane and the biretta I bet he would say he was wearing it for a laugh. If you want to wear the soutane then give away your other clothes and wear it everyday otherwise it’s dressing up not an outward sign of religious life.

The biretta with a green pom-pom is part of the proper academic or non-liturgical attire of the
holder of a degree in canon law: for the licentiate with three horns, as shown in the photograph, for the doctorate with four. I know nothing about the green sash which may possibly also be academic dress in a pontifical faculty. If a priest wishes to wear a biretta in a parish setting, plain black is probably correct and, in my view, soberly appropriate.

I have seen those green additional effects on trad clergy coming out of the northern shrines such as Warrington. They signify membership of the Order of Lazarus – look it up on Wiki if interested in the loonier fringes of the Catholic right with their fantasies of the king over the water and all that jazz. The fact is that Father Doyle looks utterly ridiculous. His use of the term exorcism in relation to the sacraments is a deliberate harking back to the old rite of baptism of which it then formed the first part. To use the term today is completely misleading, and Doyle cannot claim innocence in being shocked by the response. It conjures up some of the worst aspects of where religion dangerously crosses with magic with the ( male ) priest as the all-powerful shaman. He would be screaming the place down if he had a white witch operating in his parish – there is a long fascinating history of fear of women as healers.
Furthermore what role can either the rosary or the Sacred Heart play in the spiritual development of a young person today? They had enormous value in enabling a relationship with the divine rooted in the actuality of human life, but they both sprang from the culture of their time, and to inculcate them now in a school or family home is pure affectation. No wonder people get more out of yoga whatever Phone says. In fact there are well-established Catholic exercises such as centering prayer and Ignatian methods which help discern God in our actual lives.

Like

Phone of course should have read as Phonsie Cullinan, who, yet again, made a tit of himself trying to ban yoga from parish halls. He does not of course ban the sale and consumption of alcohol by parish clubs which provide a nice little earner.

Like

In fact the rite of exorcism is still a thing in the rite of baptism. And the rosary and the Sacred Heart are time-tested means of meditative prayer and intimacy with God who loves us. I suspect your hostility to these means, but not Ignatian prayer, is indicative of your own personal history. Without demeaning your experience, we should beware generalising that experience to the Church at large.

Extracts from article in The Irish Times 22nd October 2019.
By Cauvery Madhavan
“Om Shanti (Peace be with you) Bishop Phonsie! It’s okay, tuck the cross back into your cassock and save the garlic for another day because, believe me, yoga comes in peace. It has no agenda, no proselytising motive for it is not a religion.”
“Yoga has neither an inferiority complex nor does it suffer delusions of grandeur. Yoga has no arguments with religions of any kind because it doesn’t offer itself as an alternative. Yoga just is – yoga.
Yoga’s origins can be traced to the Vedas, the ancient Indian texts dating from around 1900BC from which also arose the Hindu, Jain and Buddhist religions. So yoga is not a Hindu practice though it shares its origins with that religion.
Modern yoga in its most popular forms, as practised all over Ireland, can be attributed to Sage Patanjali who, sometime in the period between 200AD and 400AD, codified the Yoga Sutras which to this day serve as a guide to posture, breathing and meditation. Yogis might well be possessed, but only with a desire to keep mind and body in good condition”
“The Catholic Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan, who has warned against teaching yoga and mindfulness in schools, might want to consider why so many Irish people are taking to yoga so enthusiastically. The reasons are so far removed from what he imagines that he really doesn’t need to mobilise the deliverance brigade any time soon.”
“The Catholic Church’s anti-yoga stance is a deflection of sorts. But yoga is not the bogeyman. Practising yoga does not make anyone a lesser Catholic. In fact the wellbeing that comes with regular practice of yoga (or any other physical activity for that matter) definitely contributes considerably towards being hardworking, well-tempered, patient and tolerant with your family, children, friends and co-workers. All good Christian attributes.”
“In the last two decades so many Irish people have in droves lost faith in the institution of the church while retaining every bit of their faith. Ireland is not any more a nation that will be dictated to by men in costumes, and certainly not about something so absurd. Imagine being afraid of yoga!”
“This demonisation of an ancient practice that professes no belief systems and therefore seeks no converts is just a diversionary tactic. The existential danger to the Catholic Church is totally from within. There is plenty to be exorcised, and Ireland knows what doors the deliverance ministry needs to be knocking on first.
Yoga, Bishop Phonsie, is the very least of the huge problems of credibility that exist and are multiplying for the Catholic Church in Ireland. Yoga is not the anti-Christ. Namaste (Bye).”

With dignified music and an intelligent, kind homily, the celebrant displayed the beauty of a funeral mass, even in loss, grief and sadness. Nine of the silly nonsense of beer bottles, cigarette cartons and crosswords that we get at funerals. Gay was obviously a man of deep faith, though possessed a genuine, questioning and reflective faith. God rest his good soul.

Not a great fan of M Mc Aleese but she got it nailed on re RCC. It’s accurate more or less.
‘Church of pious males’ re her comments as there was no room for women. It was women who stayed at the foot of the cross while male apostles fled. It was Mary Madgelene a woman, who saw Jesus first on day of resurrection.
Not a fan of her because his brother who is deaf many years older than myself. I heard it from his ex classmate in school for deaf boys only in Stillorgan. There was abuses that went on in that school which was founded by Bishop Mc Quaid. It was one of Mc Aleese’s relatives who worked in that school and saw the abuses there. Mc Aleese family took out their deaf son out of school for deaf boys and placed it in another school for deaf boys in Belfast or Uk. But Mc Aleese family never reported the abuses which would have stopped there but it went on and on for a decade or more. all teachers were afraid of the nuns (daughters of the cross or Liege) for years until one teacher stumbled into area of abuse. Then reported over and above school nun’s head then superior as nun ewas removed completely.
That head nun never went on nor became another another head nun in another school in any location here and abroad. She was very spiteful and brought out all her sexual frustrations on all then young deaf boys. Found out that most boys have one thing in common was PTSD. That nun came form the north and died few years ago. Mc Aleese family so was many other families, knew that nun cos she was the head nun whom they had dealt with re their deaf boy. When she passed away as i asked around their reactions was’ she go to hell, bitch who deserved to rot in hell, she go hell etc. I was shocked cos it affected lot of deaf boys which i never thought cos i thought maybe a few of them.
That’s why some deaf people including me, wasnt a great fan of Mc Aleese and the church especially more son on that sadistic nuns who denied and denied everything until they were blue in the face. If reported to outsiders like state authorities, which may have saved deaf boys a lot of psychological harm or mental turmoil which arose from abuses in deaf school.
Finally it was Mc Quaid who set it up cos unknown reasons but one other reason i could think of was Parents were afraid of other deaf school (main one) cos reasons unknown to me or others. But a visit there would tell or inform parents of the bad vibe in main deaf school in Dublin. One elderly nun told me that cos parents asked her for advice as where to send their sons to.

There is widespread misunderstanding of the nature of hearing loss, its effects, and its prevalence particularly in the older generation. Hearing impaired persons regularly have to insist that they are “deaf and not daft” in response to how they are perceived. Age UK research indicates that 71% of those 70+ have hearing loss. 70,000 individuals in N Ireland use hearing aids from among the 300,000 who have some degree of hearing loss. Priests would squeal at the first sign that they were in danger or that their comfortable life style and status was in peril, and spill the beans, with rationalisation just as they do when they are breaking their vows of celibacy, or poverty, or simply dipping in to the parish accounts. Who does + Nichols think he and his priests are ? The days of priests giving their lives for the faith and for Christ are long gone. It’s more giving their lives for themselves, these days. Cop on + Nichols. You made yourself look like an overly dramatic grand dame there. Really ! And, on the question of abuse of children, if a priest does hear this, wherever, in confession or not, he should report it, and the law should make him report it. A doctor, by far better trained and qualified and respected than a priest these days, has to report it, medical confidentiality or not. So, + Nichols, stop hyping up the status and importance of priests with this seal of confession stuff, please. It’s more of the, “Oh, we are are so special because we are ordained and have some kind of indelible ontological status on our souls and beings..” Rubbish ! You are a pile of self-serving, lying, dysfunctional twats ! And the Law will ensure that you behave just like the rest of us have to. No exceptions. No exclusions. No special status. Get it ?!

At 6.55pm – anon.
Re breaking the seal of confession that is not the first time I heard it. It happened at my ex alma mater school. There was a vincentian priest there who reported it back to Christian brothers re sins of some deaf boys. Ex class mate of mine stole 20 pounds which was a lot of money that time (long before the euro). He told few of us not to tell any one as we agreed on that. But one day a certain Christian brother said to ex my class mate ‘ u stole twenty pounds’. He asked few of us did we grass on him as we strenuously denied time and time again. It then dawned on ex classmate that it was the last person he spoke to was a priest. So we planned to test that vincentian priest by sending one of us to confession and said to him – I stole a fiver and a roast chicken plus wine which was taken from their fridge. Then a month or two later instead of straight out of confession next day etc, same certain CB pointed out to one of us exactly re a fiver and chicken with wine stolen. Then we told him brazenly that priest told you this as he denied it so strongly which was obvious to ourselves. Then we told him that we would be waiting for that Vincentian priest in particular. After a break in school term, that Vincentian priest was transfered to school for deaf girls as he never came back. So much for the seal of confession which was supposed to be sacred and sealed. After that I couldn’t trust a priest since that violation. Never go to a same priest again. So much for the seal of confession that Rcc was harping and thrumping about it. My advice – don’t believe their word cos they can’t be trusted.
You could trust a medical doctor or a lawyer than RCC regards to their seal of confidentiality.

However for my own part, in relation to ‘hell’, I offer the same challenge on that matter as I do to many, in fact most, of the professed historical beliefs of religion: “Is there any shred of objective verifiable evidence that does not rely on “handed down” beliefs based on allegedly “sacred texts” no longer in existence”?
It is for “believers” to produce their solid evidence should they wish to convince those who see no reason to unquestioningly simply believe what others have professed, especially when so many of those professed beliefs are illogically ridiculous.
