SCHOOL WILL NO LONGER BE RECOGNISED AS CATHOLIC AFTER REFUSING TO SACK GAY TEACHER SAYS DIOCESE.

School’s appeal will go to Vatican ‘if necessary’ to overturn decision

“A Caring and Diverse Community
Brebeuf Jesuit believes that the authentic development of each student unfolds within a safe and supportive environment. Rooted in the Catholic tradition and guided by its Jesuit heritage, the Brebeuf community embraces the fullness and diversity of creation, accepts and respects all people, and encourages genuine interreligious and intercultural dialogue. Brebeuf Jesuit’s ultimate goal is that every student will journey through life with the confident assurance of a personal friendship with a loving God”.

Archbishop Charles Thompson has told Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School that it ‘can no longer use the name Catholic’ as an institution.

A school that refused to fire a gay teacher as ordered by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis says it has been told by church officials that it will no longer be recognised as Catholic. But school leaders pledged to keep the institution’s religious identification.
The archdiocese announced in a statement that it would no longer recognise Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, an independently operated school, because it was not insisting that all employees “be supportive of all teachings of the Catholic Church,” the Catholic News Agency reported. The church is against homosexual activity.
A statement by the Reverend Brian G Paulson, who heads the Midwest Province of Jesuits, said the archdiocese told Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School two years ago not to renew the contract of a teacher whose “marital status does not conform to church doctrine.”

PAULSON

He also said the decision, to be formalised in a church decree, would be appealed through a church process and would go as high as the Vatican “if necessary.”
Leaders of Brebeuf Jesuit posted an open letter to their community on the Indianapolis school’s website saying the archdiocese had directly inserted itself into a school governance matter in an “unprecedented” way and that it would not do what Archbishop Charles Thompson had demanded.

The letter said in part: “Specifically, Brebeuf Jesuit has respectfully declined the Archdiocese’s insistence and directive that we dismiss a highly capable and qualified teacher due to the teacher being a spouse within a civilly-recognised same-sex marriage.”
The unidentified teacher was said by Mr Paulson to be “a valued employee” who does not teach religion. He wrote that Brebeuf Jesuit became aware through social media “that one of its teachers entered into a civil marriage with a person of the same sex.”

According to the Associated Press, a school operated by the archdiocese, Indianapolis Roncalli High School, has fired or sspended two guidance counsellors in the past year because they are in same-sex marriages.
Brebeuf Jesuit’s leaders who signed the open letter are the Reverend William Verbryke, the school president; W Patrick Bruen, chair of the school’s Board of Trustees; and Daniel M Lechleiter, chair-elect of the trustees board. They promised in the letter that the school’s mission would not change as a result of this conflict with the archdiocese.
“We understand that this news will likely spur a host of emotions, questions and even confusion in the days ahead. Please be assured, the Archdiocese’s decision will not change the mission or operations of Brebeuf.

On Friday, the school’s name was not on the archdiocese’s list of Catholic schools in its region.
The church says there are 68 Catholic schools – 57 elementary schools and 11 high schools – in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, according to its website. Collectively, they enrolled some 23,200 students during the 2018-2019 school year.
Most of those schools are operated by a school division within the archdiocese, which is headed by Superintendent Gina Kuntz Fleming, who did not return phone calls about Brebeuf Jesuit. While Brebeuf Jesuit is a Catholic school within the archdiocese, it is independently operated. The school has nearly 800 students in grades nine through 12.
The school leaders’ letter said that, while the archdiocese “may choose to no longer attend or participate in the school’s Masses and formal functions, Brebeuf Jesuit is, and will always be, a Catholic Jesuit school.”
It also said church leaders assured them that “Jesuit priests may continue to serve at Brebeuf Jesuit and will retain their ability to celebrate the sacraments of the Catholic Church.”

PAT SAYS

Why is it that in a church run by promiscuous gay men that same church wants gay lay teachers sacked from their jobs in RCC schools?

Hypocrisy?

Yes! Massive hypocrisy!

This particular teacher does not teach religion or does not have a pastoral role within the school.

Fair play to the Jesuits for standing up to Arch-hypocrite Thompson.

In the 21st century no person, body or organisation should be allowed to discriminate against any human being for their sexual orientation.

We need massive and immediate legislation everywhere to STOP the RCC discriminating in this or any other way.

Governments should impose very burdensome fines on the RCC for such discrimination.

If you hit the RCCs in their pockets they will soon fall into line!

I have no respect, whatever, for Roman Catholic priests, but the Jesuits here could (I say ‘could’) change ny mind.

11.34: First out of the trap, Magna!! Who cares what you think? Dream away. I admire the Jesuits for the strength, clarity and courage of their principles. I admire their pastoral and Christian vision. I have encountered gay teachers and they are valued members of school communities. I would never question the sexual orientation of any teacher. I have interviewed gay teachers for positions in schools and happily appointed them by consensus of the interviewing panel. It is time for the Church to value diversity, inclusivity and creativity in all teachers. Prejudice against a teacher based on sexual identity is totally unacceptable. Well done to these Jesuits at Brebeuf.

You have no business interviewing, much less appointing, any teacher, gay or straight.

Romanist clergy should not be involved in any way shape or form in the education of Catholic kids.

Let’s be honest here: Romanist clergy have messed up our kids enough. Would any responsible Catholic parent allow their child to be alone with a Romanist?

I’m shocked at the continued involvement of these creeps with our kids. I’m just as shocked knowing that Catholic parents continue to allow this ever-present danger.

No other organisation that has behaved as abominably towards children as the Romanists have would be allowed through the door.

The whole thing is a pantomime performance.
Why should the Archbishop be giving, or withholding, his endorsement to this school, or to any other that he doesn’t control?
Particularly since teaching is one of those professions that attract paedophiles, and private establishments have always seemed to collect more than their fair share.
Incidently there was a news-report last year. “3 Jesuits formerly missioned in Indianapolis accused of sexually abusing minors – Three Jesuits formerly missioned at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis have been accused of sexually abusing minors during their time at the school.
On Monday, the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus released the names of Jesuits against whom there has been at least one “established allegation” of sexual abuse of a minor since 1955. https://eu.indystar.com/story/news/2018/12/17/midwest-jesuits-society-jesus-priest-abuse-list/2339326002/

Agreed… unless Catholic schools fall completely under the control and management of lay people.
The assumption is that a school is Catholic only if it has the endorsement of the Romanists; this is the measure of their arrogance, that they abrogate to themselves the right to define who is and who isn’t Catholic.
To be honest, there isn’t enough anger at the continued involvement of the Romanist institution discredited by centuries of paedophilia.
It is monstrous that parents continue to allow Romanist creeps to have influence over their children.

What a cabal of hypocritical wasters. The RCC want to pass judgement on others whilst continuing their own nefarious activities. They need to put their own house in order before looking at anyone house. Their hypocrisy is boundless and has no end. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone

Whose judgement would you trust in this matter ? The SJs or the local Archbishop. I think I know which one has the better track record of service to the Church, of courage, of standing up for the poor, in thinking creatively and honestly about faith……yes, the SJs. There’s no comparison. Good for them that they are standing up to a bullying, black and white, self-proclaimed orthodox nit wit who is trying to push his weight around.

Aren’t you thinking of Catechetics? The other poster teaches Religious Studies. They are not the same.

For some years before the reversal of Church teaching on the death penalty, I realised that capital punishment contradicted biblical ethics and accepted that it was morally wrong. During catechetical class, I was, of course, aware of contemporary Church teaching on the subject, but I never left it at that: to me such acceptance of the status quo was morally wrong, so I always tried to debate the subject with others.

It is nonsensical to assume that every statement in the Catechism of the Catholic Church can honestly be assented to by every Catholic; it simply isn’t realistic.

Pressuring people to believe what they truly cannot believe simply runs the moral risk of making them liars.

On the same lines, surely teachers in Catholic schools who use contraception should be dismissed. No intimate questions are needed, they stand out because they don’t have fifteen children.
Easy. Catholic ethos maintained.

Thompson is stating this

How does he suggest they enforce it? A blanket ban of all gay teachers in Catholic schools? I know Catholic schools locally that are employing gay teachers, I think this will be a trip to the Fair Employment Tribunal…

Good analogy, Magna. Well done.

You miss, of course, at 10:24, the biblical context of that image. The Genesis 2-3 text, inter alia, seeks to provide an aetiology for the cultural phenomenon in rural and agricultural Palestinian Jewish societies of vigilance and safeguarding against snakes – a task largely assigned to women.

It’s a wonder the Jesuits at Brebeuf are so bothered by Thompson’s decision. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, wouldn’t it?

Let’s get all Aquinas here by talking accidents and substance. Substantially, Brebeuf remains a Catholic school, even if it’s accident, the name ‘Catholic’, has been ordered removed from its description. Thompson’s ‘victory’ here is entirely pyrrhic. My concern is that Vatican officianados will back Thompson, making his ‘victory’ appear real.

I think the Jesuits have made a mistake by appealing to a nest of Romanist vipers. 😀

Oh, I’m so bored by bishops and priest going on about how awful it is to be gay, ‘intrinsically disordered’ etc. They need to cop on, and realise that the rest of the world has moved on. For most, it is not an issue any more. What worries me most is the action they take against gay people in the Church. That should, and I am sure soon will be, outlawed by a state that recognises the inherent prejudice and discrimination which the Church is currently able to get away with. I believe in the UK gay people who have been ‘terminated’ by the Church as their employer, have been successful in challenging this in court and the Catholic Church has had to step back.
Also, it goes without saying that the more irate, aggressive and negative a priest or bishop is about being gay, the more it says about them – not just their lack of Christian life – but also the issues that they are venting really when they vent about gays. It’s basic psychology. The bigger the bigot, the greater what they are trying to hide. And what they do in the dark and in secret is no doubt more dysfunctional and damaging than a gay teacher being a positive role model.

This Citizens’ Advice outlines allowed discrimination by religious organisations:

I would say that most people reading this would think how unreasonable it is for religious organisations to discriminate against particular individuals or groups of people. And, how untenable this is in the medium to long term.
Two one honest, I think most Church people would feel uneasy about the current situation. And for the Catholic. Church the real issue is always to do with sex ! God, I just wish they would get over it ! Please !

Well Pat I’m up here today along the North coast, alive and kicking, on the big chair. Actually off shortly to the Port for a spot of lunch.
I had a quare heehaw at today’s subject.
Since the day I turned my back and walked away from the Roman Catholic Corporation my inner peace and sense of humanity has increased remarkably. Seeing it for the corporation and highly politicised organisation it is has taught me it is wonderful now no longer to have to go baaaahhhh ! ( slight nod to Magna here).
Learning to live and let live, be tolerant to the views and opinions of others ,including my former co religionists whilst striving to have a happy , joyous and free and following the Golden Rule has become my model.
Most of my private chuckles come about when I see and hear followers of any sect or religion telling us their franchise on God is the correct one.
I’ve long since learned the difference between religion and spirituality.
And so to the Archbishop and the Jesuits. What an unedifying mess. If the teacher is good at their job then that should be the criteria on which they should be assessed. Nothing more, nothing less.
I’m sure if the same Archbishop was to take unwell and be rushed into A&E needing an immediate lifesaving operation he would hardly decline the services of a gay surgeon on the basis that he or she was intrinsically disordered…….thought not!
Good for the ‘Js’. Stand your ground!
Should it matter if the school is listed in that archdiocese? At days end who gives a toss. What’s better? That children’s minds and education is underpinned by an ethos ,abundantly evident in faith schools, which is restrictive with a big infusion of narrow mindedness and conditioned within the strictures of Codes which are being seen for what they are and increasingly rejected. (Absolutely no criticism of teachers intended.) Or should they be allowed to grow and be nurtured in an educational environment where the understanding, acceptance and respect for each other is unconditional.
The key word is unconditional because I am of the belief that the decline and rejection of faith schools or at least hierarchical interference will come about from the younger generations who will want to live out their lives and be educated exploring humanity and their world in all its richness and inclusivity while turning their faces at the attachment their parents had with the shibboleths of the past.
Anyway time for the roast.

I see on RTE that Sean Quinn has reported the PP of Ballyconnell in Kilmore diocese to the Vatican. I hope he’s not expecting a reply anytime soon. It wasn’t anti clerical. The PP was wrong to insinuate that Sean Quinn (a weekly mass goer in Ballyconnell) was in someway connected. Although he didn’t name Quinn the people knew what he was insinuating and he abused his homily time to do that. No one can ever condone such violence and abuse but the PP should have kept his beak shut. It’s a Gardai investigation and the PP should not interfere in that. Condemning the violence – Yes! Trying to insinuate who the paymasters could be – No!
