NEW SEMINARY TO REPLACE MAYNOOTH.

Shake-up may see students leave historic home

Radical plans that would see Maynooth seminary leaving the college’s neogothic buildings in favour of a new purpose-built home on the same campus are being considered by the hierarchy, Primate of All-Ireland Archbishop Eamon Martin has told The Irish Catholic.

The proposal is part of a radical shake-up that would seek to empower Ireland’s laity and see the future of seminary formation transformed to help future priests be better trained for life in contemporary Ireland.

It comes amidst questions about Maynooth’s fitness for the task of forming men for the priesthood with Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin recently questioning the college’s suitability as a Catholic university given that it currently has effectively only one fully active faculty.

However, Archbishop Eamon – Chancellor of the Pontifical University at Maynooth – insisted that there are ambitious plans to ensure that Maynooth continues to play a valuable role in the life of the Church in Ireland.

“Over the last two years anyway, we have been reflecting and discerning really about the future of seminary formation for Ireland, and also more widely than that about the future of first-class provision of philosophical, theological and pastoral formation for the whole Irish Church,” Archbishop Eamon said.

Future

Noting how in Maynooth there are three institutions “cheek by jowl” – the pontifical university, the secular university, and the seminary – Archbishop Eamon pointed out that the seminary is currently quite small, and that “for the future the trustees are aware that we need to be planning for something smaller from the point of view of seminary education”.

“In our recent reflection we also believed that we need to be looking at the possibility of perhaps even a new building in Maynooth, which would be more in tune with the demands for the future,” he says. “In terms of seminary education we’re talking about a smaller number of Irish seminarians”.

He also said that Rome “is calling on us to provide a centre for the ongoing formation of clergy. In other words could we have a place to bring our clergy to give them a year sabbatical, to avail of top-class philosophical theological and pastoral formation”.

Maintaining that Maynooth is a going concern because of its location, its built heritage, and potential property development with Maynooth University, Archbishop Eamon told The Irish Catholic that significant discussions are ongoing around this.

Discussions

“We’re currently in very high-level discussions with Maynooth University about the possibilities that we have to exploit the resources we have there in order to generate sufficient income to be able to do the exciting plans that I’ve been speaking to you about,” he said, adding that he is not sure that the future of the seminary lies in the existing buildings.

“I’m not so certain whether the current old buildings in Maynooth are what we’re dreaming of in terms of the future housing of, say, seminary formation, but they’re part of our tradition and we are very blessed that Maynooth University is our anchor tenant for a lot of the older buildings that we’re no longer using,” he said.

The challenge, according to Archbishop Eamon, is how Ireland can maintain a first-class centre for theological, philosophical and pastoral formation.

“Because if you look at what Pope Francis was saying and his dream of a missionary impulse to transform the Church at this time in the West, and to channel everything for evangelisation, then what we need to be doing in the Church in Ireland is looking to have a very top class internationally-renowned centre of theological, philosophical and pastoral education,” he said.

Tension

There has been tension for some time at the level of the hierarchy around Maynooth. It came to the fore in 2016 when the Dublin diocese announced it would no longer send seminarians to the college. At the time, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin complained of “strange goings-on” at the seminary.

This statement / movement is not a genuine attempt to build something for the future.

It is the Irish bishops response to the Gay Maynooth Sumner of 2016.

It’s just they leave it three years in case anyone thinks they are responding to pressure!!

They know that Maynooth and all modern RCC seminaries are now live in gay saunas.

So they want to build a new sauna for the future generations of Gorgeouses, King Pucks, Horny Andy’s etc.

I wonder if the new communal showers will have machines containing condoms and poppers?

However, I imagine it will be a Mullaney and Collins free zone.

This whole new expensive building will be paid for by the, wait for it, baaaaaaahs!

Well this baa won’t be paying a red cent to their new pet building project in Gayenooth.The problem is not the building. The problem is the culture, the personnel, the process of educating, human development and spiritual development, or lack of, selecting suitably mature candidates, and mature experienced wise priests in faculty. etc.
Maybe faculty will need to do a mandatory check of social media to determine if any candidates had bits and bobs out and about on social media apps!

Good money after bad. Millions from church collections have been spent on Maynooth, to no avail now in terms of its chief and historic purpose of forming priests. Plus the religious orders built brand new buildings there (SMA, Kiltegan, Columban, Mercy, Presentation) all of which subsequently closed and were sold off to Maynooth University.

In Paris there was a similar waste of money with the Irish College there and in Rome millions have been spent on the Irish College, which has a handful of Irish students.

So much for DM’s new vision for priestly formation!! Just more of the same. More dysfunction, poor formation and denial of the reality that is staring them in the face. No one left with any balls or imagination to change the status quo and rethink the whole process.

This business of tinkering with buildings is not the answer to the future of the priesthood. The real issues have to do with the current foundations on which priesthood is currently predicated, which have been found wanting and damaging. Priesthood will not a be positive or holy state of life until it moves away from clericalism, exceptionalism, elevated ontological notions of itself, built upon a male celibate model which in frustration has developed a way of living and looking at the world through the prism of the loins and judging everything by sex and sexuality. Until the priesthood is modelled on a wide acceptance of differing genders, states of life, married and unmarried, and different sexualities, and sees itself as first and foremost as a form of humble service, it is doomed. They will not even be needing a much reduced seminary building unless they undertake radical rethinking, restructuring of the priesthood, and a new theology of priesthood along the lines I have suggested. Retrenching in to an all male, frustrated, dysfunctional model of priesthood and believing it to be a purer Stormtrooper select group of priests, is not the answer.

perform staff building tasks, ongoing training, managing change or problem
solving they wouldn’t last five minutes.

“Retrenching in to an all male, frustrated, dysfunctional model of priesthood ….” is probably the way it will go, because we are woefully lacking in creative, imaginative and intelligent leadership in the bishops of our Church, who generally are more interested in looking after their own status and way of life and are too scared to stand up and think anew and afresh. But, I suppose we should recognise that we are not going to get fresh leadership from a group of men who have been educated and brought up on a self-perpetuating model of priesthood. They are incapable of thinking outside the box in which they are held captive. So, I don’t hold out much hope, to be honest. Things probably do need to come crashing down in some crisis, perhaps even worse than the abuse crisis, in order for a new Church to arise. I can well understand how the reformers of the 16th century felt. I feel the same about the Roman Catholic Church. It needs radical reforming.

The Traddies will be around for a bit, until they see the light, and realise that the whole culture of priesthood that they have signed up for does not bring them happiness or fulfilment, and instead is a recipe for disaster and dysfunction. How many of them will still be swanning around in birettas with pompoms on and soutanes and lace albs in ten years time ? Not many. The future is not traddy, and it most certainly is not bright.

There are 32 seminarians resident in Maynooth, in a place which once housed 600 (plus there were other Irish diocesan seminaries still open then).
Meanwhile, the FSSP has 101 new entrants (first years).

Amy needs to wake up to reality. A new seminary degenerate they have hundreds if not thousands of buildings available. What about bishop blings pad? Would that not be suitable? However, buildings are not the issue. It’s about what goes on inside them. Wise up Amy. The church is rotten to the core. No new building is going to change nor gloss it up. pat would it be possible for you to do a blog on seminary life, seminary training in 2019. For years I have heard snippets of crises and crises at each seminary. This could be your legacy. The impetus for the change, the blog that lit the firework that changed the way men are trained. I’m sure you would like to see a change? Your blog is read in every seminary and diocese. I’m sure Archbishop Wong who has oversight of seminary life would also be interested. Pat from what I can see, your the man that allows the truth come out. The church needs to air what’s happening, it might not be good reading but then we can build a new model. What do you think Pat? What do others think?

Yes but the gossipers, haters and bigots have a place as well.
They are probably articulating deep rooted feelings of hurt or perhaps an inability to process some emotion or negative feeling they have. Or maybe they just want to make mischief!
People will often beef up their comments and remarks when they perceive that normal attempts to be heard or to voice their concerns are stymied or ignored.
Such has been the track record of the RCC in its treatment of justifiable dissenting voices.
Shout down those who claim to have been abused. Marginalise the homosexual. Call them ‘intrinsically disordered.’
Scoff at those living in same sex relationships and decry unmarried couples as being in ‘irregular unions’ Doesn’t matter a jot how loving and fulfilling those relationships are!
Cover up and put assets beyond reach in case compensation needs to be paid.
And then when you are called out for the rotten, putrid hypocrites that you are you can skulk off, put on nice vestments and get your sheep to cite the likes of this blog and other critical forums which attempt to shine a light in the dark corners as being the home of the gossiper ,the hater and the bigot.

At very many locations in Matthew, the text is the result of his redaction of Mark. Redaction of earlier texts is a form of organic development of biblical books. It’s the final form of the Gospel, which includes Matthew 28.19 which informs literary approaches to the Gospel, especially narrative criticism. Your assumption is an example of the misapplication of historical criticism.

To posit that Matthew 28.19 is a later redaction is to miss the inclusio formed by 1:23 and 28:19-20.

There is an alternative interpretation: your unsubstantiated claim that only God can make disciples goes against the biblical evidence.

I think God has a purpose for the Catholic church – to be the place which will contain as many criminal, dysfunctional, ineffectual and just plain inadequate people as possible. Then the rest of us can get on with living a good quality life not bothered by the numbskulls busy inside the institution making out it’s the only way.

A few points, Excellency.

Possibly you are refused private retreats in such mean old places (1) because you have, according to the objective canonical standards of their Church, you have committed repeated multiple, formally schismatic acts, and (2) because you have a long running blog devoted to raking up muck about private individuals, clerics and religious, based more often than not on rumors and innuendo alone? Possibly — just a wild guess — this accounts for that odd reluctance on the part of superiors and guestmasters/guestmistresses?

I have been to Silverstream more than once while visiting Ireland (it is very close to the Dublin Airport), and have been impressed with the genuine friendliness and humility on the part of the monks there. These are not qualities usually associated with groups using the traditional pre-V2 liturgical books. I despise the trad universe. I find that environment quite triggering and I avoid them it all costs. These men, simply put, are not trads. They are orthodox Catholics who contribute to the legitimate liturgical diversity of the Church (which of course is in fact a communion of ritual churches (23 or 24 is it? not to mention the Anglican Ordinariates).

Finally, it is bizarre to see an episcopus vagans on a high horse about ecclesiastical pedigree. Not a good look on you, Excellency. The fact of the matter is that they are an autonomous diocesan monastery (akin to the Abbey Saint-Joseph de Clairval in Flavigny) whose constitutions were approved by the Holy See. When Dom Gueranger started Solesmes with a rag-tag group of diocesan priests, he was put down by many precisely for having no pedigree. Gueranger answered simply: “Well then, I suppose that we will become Benedictines … by following the Rule of St Benedict”. There is no such thing as monastic succession. Normally a monastery begins by being filiated from another, but not always.

And yes, Excellency, you should return to the Strumpet, without delay. Harlot though she may be, she is the only Church Christ founded. Surely it is no accident that Rahab the harlot has been regarded for centuries as an image of the Catholic Church. You may remember a very colorful book of the BIble attributed to the Prophet Hosea; might I suggest it, Excellency, for your Advent lectio divina?

Logic is a fascinating area of study. It helps us to avoid fallacies and thus to think properly about reality. For instance, have you heard of the fallacy of guilt by association. It goes like this (I will use a random example):

(A) Ealing Abbey is bad.
(B) Ealing Abbey is in the Order of Saint Benedict.
(C) All monasteries in the OSB (including Silverstream Priory) are bad.

Turns out that this very clever argument is in fact fallacious and possibly even spreads false and bigoted notions about whole groups of people. Weird, huh?

Didn’t Scotland closes all its native seminaries then build a new one for a new vision of servant leadership which is now closed ? Maybe men aren’t drawn to the models of priesthood that other people think they should? Managed decline is the policy in England and has been since the 80s so who ever leads will have totally subscribed to that policy even when Bishops appear to put something new in place it’s exactly the same principle , inviting religious orders to take over closed churches is managed decline, turning catholic schools into joint faith schools is managed decline, closing seminaries and rearranging training is managed decline etc
