RELAUNCHED PRIEST’S ORGANISATION CALLS FOR ONE DAY WORKING WEEK.

THE CLERICAL ORGANISATION, THE SPR – SOCIETY OF PERPECTUAL RECREATION – HAS CALLED FOR A ONE DAY WORKING WEEK FOR OVERWORKED AND UNDER APPRECIATED IRISH CATHOLIC PRIESTS.

Canon Denis Sweeney RIP

The emergence of the SPR, founded by Canon Denis Sweeney of Northampton Diocese, in Ireland poses the prospect of the dissolution of the poorly regarded Irish priest’s union The Association of Catholic Priests.

Canon Sweeney was a biker and a massive collector of antiques, old clocks, old radios and hurch plate.

The relaunch of the SPR in Ireland occurred on Wednesday November 26th in the seaside recreation resort of Newcastle, County Down.

The Newcastle event was organised by the SPR’s founding secretary, Father Raimondo Turri SPR, formerly of Westminster diocese and now with the Verona Fathers in Italy.

Father Turri is thought to be the illegitimate child of Prince Charles and Dame Greta Turri, the Italian mistress of Saint John Paul 11.

The motto of the SPR is:

Et exivit face bonus et fecit bene

Which means ” He went out to do good and he did well”.

In other words, he, the priest, started off with good intentions, and later abandoned them.

Members of the SPR only do work on a Sunday but recreate alone and with each other on the other six days of the week.

They wine and dine either in each others presbyteries or in various hotels and hostelries.

Their meetings involve serious drinking and serious eating.

Periodically, they elect one of their members to the position they call Father General. At their gatherings Father General wears the purple mozetta of a deceased or retired bishop.

The SPR held an inaugural meeting of SPR NORTHERN IRELAND last Wednesday evening in an Italian restaurant in County Down. The English Father General presided over the meeting and I was the guest speaker.

I gently challenged them about the morality and spirituality of having such an imbalance between work and recreation in their lives and the level of cynicism that could accompany and inform such an imbalance.

While they were very gracious and indeed generous with me, they totally rejected my challenge and said that their outlook was perfectly in line with RC cleticalism to which they are 100% dedicated.

They gave me a speaking fee, arranged hotel accommodation and paid my travelling expenses.

Like AA they only use first names when non members are at their meetings. I gathered that the meeting was attended by the English Father General, Father Turri, two Down and Connor priests, one Dromore priest and five Armagh priests.

Each Northern priest present vowed to bring another priest with them to their next meeting in Enniskillen on December 28th.

WEDDING

I managed to combine my meeting with the SPR with a wedding in the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle. It was a bit of a rough day, weatherwise, in the Mournes.

BROTHER CHARLES DE FOUCAULD

Today is the anniversary of the death of Brother Charles in the Sahara desert at Tamanrasset in 1916.

Brother Charles inspired the Little Brothers of Jesus, the Little Sisters of Jesus and the Jesus Caritas movement.

Google him. He is very interesting and inspiring.

WORLD AIDS DAY

Today we remember all the millions of our brothers and sisters who have perished in the AIDS disaster.

And we thank God for the new drugs the antiretrovirals that for all practical purposes are a cure and prevent hiv+ becoming AIDS.

Canon Peter O’Reilly, diocesan patron of retired headmasters and organists surely has life membership. Enniskillen has had very underpowered PPs lately. The last one with any drive and vigour was Dean Flanagan.

Mind you, if “God Save the Queen” is required at the end of the feast, Canon Peter is the go to priest.

Only a few weeks ago he joined Arlene Foster and the Secretary of State in lustily singing Ulster’s National Anthem in the Protestant cathedral. He knew all the words.

That may be. But at least no one there was turned down for ordination because they were deemed unsuitable, UNLIKE SOME.

Dermo should sign up, based on his behaviour at ordinations where he just leaves after Mass and says barely a word to the newly ordained priest and his relatives.

He has to catch flights back to Rome. His main residence is in Rome. He shares a two bed apartment with Tighe.

Why did Diarmuid Martin ever become a priest? He doesn’t have a pastoral bone in his body.

Dermo’s brother Seamus, a retired Irish Times hack, would have made a better Archbishop of Dublin. Seamus’s theological views are as heterdox as Dermo’s but at least he’s open about it.

That’s a fine establishment in Newcastle, have eaten there myself. Hope you didn’t bump into the nosey Newry couple who spy on clergy who are having a light snack.

Yes it’s a good restaurant with very nice staff. No sign of that couple. But I like the couple and they do give us a good laugh.

Dear Bishop Pat, my wife, Mary, died two months ago. We were not from Newry and I haven’t dined out since. That’s why we haven’t posted and we were not nosey. Please pray for Mary and for me. I look at your blog but it’s hard when people still make reference to us in a mocking way. We did enjoy dining out on a regular basis but it’s now no more. Life is cruel.

Since he avoided all such Romanist after being thrown out, we may legitimately ask what people has Magna been left alone with in his life that he is so twisted, so emotionally and spiritually damaged, evidenced by his OTT ramblings of hate speech, frustration, angst and poison. The poor Mags is bereft of human companionship and if he is ever to find a lover (imposdible of course) he’ll need to stop playing the same old, cranky, crazy, bizarre tune of hatred. This is not a serious organisation. It was a joke set up by McSweeney and some other clergy (including some Anglicans). It was friends who ate together. Simple as.

Like

12.25am It still exists as friends who dine together and is alive and kicking in the North of Ireland – simple as! Perhaps you never did get an invite. The SPR are quite selective after all.

Bishop Pat, could the SPR extend to Scotland. I like the aim and philosophy. I’m very keen. I knew vaguely of Canon Denis McSweeney, an eccentric but harmless soul. He liked to tell jokes and old stories but you hit the nail on the head about his love of antiques, old radios etc. This SPR could fill a space for those of us who feel far from appreciated and in some instances isolated primarily by fellow Priests.

Like

I hope the SPR would extend to Scotland too. Would you consider visiting us Pat? I heard you gave a small clergy retreat here lately. We have fine places to eat and ideal for a wee dram or two. My Bishop, Joe Toal, would be an ideal candidate for the SPR as would many of us here.

The good canon celebrated the TLM beautifully and with great care in Flitwick.

It’s hard to believe that this First Sunday in Advent is the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Novus Ordo and what do we have to show for it? The Vatican isn’t celebrating the anniversary, perhaps because nobody under 50 goes to the NO.

Denis was a true gentleman, totally eccentric, a joy to be in his company and loved the SPR that he founded. Glad to hear it’s still ongoing in N Ireland. He would love that. Instead of saying “cool” or “I approve” he only had one alternative word to offer “Vicious”. RIP Canon Denis SPR

I too would love the SPR fraternal philosophy here in Scotland. We clergy are forgotten over here. Let us know Pat when you hop on the ferry over here. You’d be very welcome. It’s just a short trip from Larne.

Obviously you and your pals are having fun, Pat.
But given the advanced age of so many of Ireland’s present priesthood a one-day working week would be sensible.
And the dioceses would be better run if solicitors, accountants and similar were running church-properties and the the parishes; perhaps with the geriatric priesthood still saying the Masses but with the preaching and evangelisation contracted out to the Free Presbyterians.

I agree with the sloth element but also gluttony too. Pat should name and shame these charlatans. They almost revel in doing nothing and only eat and drink and work one day a week – pigs the lot of them.

Pat, while these layabouts wine and dine, spare a thought for us at the real coal face. Some of us don’t get a day off let alone six days as we are committed and dedicated to our people. We strive to serve them at all times not just some of the time. Yes, occasionally we get invited out for a meal but not all the time. This group seems a total disgrace and I hope and pray it doesn’t become the norm here.

Can I recommend our priest to this SPR group, Fr McArdle of Moneymore. Usually seen out in the company of women (unusual I know) whilst out dining and socialising. To be found in places well outside his parish too.

Brian Darcy would seem the ideal candidate for this SPR. Meals out, after dinner speeches, functions, professional mourner, hijacker of celebrity funerals and weddings, driver of a big Merc (with big end), book launches, Easons darling, hogger of RTE and every TV and wireless station on the Island, ACP stalwart, sickener. It’s clear the SPR is meeting next in Enniskillen as D’Arcy is Enniskillen.

He didn’t get away with hijacking Gay Byrnes funeral!

I played a small, behind the scenes, role in keeping Darcy in the pews that day.

D’arcy lives in Crossgar not Enniskillen but he is in Fermanagh every other day. He pines for the Graan but the Graan has moved on…..all his cronies have left so it’s now all about what it should be – preaching the Word of God rather than a shrine to Brian D’arcy.

And the people down in Newcastle still have nothing to show from the money acquired by the RCC from sale of the redundant school site to LIDL against the wishes of the majority of locals supporting their council to build a much needed leisure centre.
Maybe the PP can afford to dine there on his cut!

Like

Yawn. Fake news and vitriol! MMM, once again you are incorrect about the sale of the old school site. Please use the freedom of information act to get the minutes of council meetings and you will see they had no real intention of offering an amount that would have been acceptable within charity laws. The money was used to refurbish Bryansford Hall which is extensively used by the whole community. Pop in sometime for a cup of tea!

Like

You: @ 3:48, 4:59 & 5:04, possibly the same, are probably the sort of gullible docile sheep the RC church loves having to “pay up and shut up”.
5:04: “an amount acceptable within charity laws!” Catch yourself on! There’s no such “law” requiring external interference in such a transaction. It was widely known locally and reported in the press, that the parish verbally agreed to a selling price to the council, then gave back-word on that to sell to LIDL
Considering that the land was originally donated from the Annesley estate for the “good of the town”, many people down there still feel very sore about the whole shoddy affair. I know several former parishioners who have since opted to have nothing to do with that PP or his church and ceased their regular contributions to the RC church.

Pat Buckley, my friend has returned from 12 Mass in Magherafelt and told me that the PP, Fr Gates, couldn’t reach the Advent wreath (he is a short ass and suffers from small man syndrome) to light the candle. He pulled a chair and stood on the chair (Fact) to light the candle. You couldn’t make it up.

Oh dear God Pat, who is this Fr Gates that you report who stood on a chair to light an advent wreath. Sounds like a total numpty. I hear Patsy McGarry is already on the story courtesy of your blog.

You’d think John Gates would be more careful. When he was Senior Sacristan of Maynooth, his undersacristan Iomar Daniels (Clonfert) lifted the still lit college chapel Paschal candle out of its candlestick and a stream of molten wax went down his back, ruining his soutane.

Luckily, Iomar was uninjured, but Sr Regis, Mistress of Linens and an enemy of Fr Gates, blamed him rather than Iomar, because Iomar had been given the task because Mgr Gates couldn’t reach it.

Peter O’Reilly allowed the Enniskillen Kirk minister an interview in the parish newsletter, in which the Prod came out with personal Saviour horseshite, had a pop at the Vatican and said doctrinal differences meant that there couldn’t be joint ministry and mission with the RCs.

Excellent idea, let the priests have the whole week off except for Sundays. No worries for food, money or housing – that’s where seminarians come handy; let them provide the priests with food, money and of course “personal comfort and security”. If they don’t it only means they don’t have a vocation to the priesthood, plus haven’t as strong belief in God as needed.

Bishop Larry, I hear, is a humble and gentle man. He’s was a humble PP. They love him in Clogher. Can someone highlight what diocese in the world where 3 living bishops live in the same diocese. How do Dermo, Noel Treanor and Vincent Nichols satisfy the requirement in canon law that a bishop may not be absent from his diocese for a total of a month. With trips to Rome, Brussels, Africa, Valladolid, Maynooth and holidays in caravans it’s hard to see how they do it.
Can. 395 §1. Even if a diocesan bishop has a coadjutor or auxiliary, he is bound by the law of personal residence in the diocese.
§2. Apart from ad limina visits, councils, synods of bishops, conferences of bishops which he must attend, or some other duty legitimately entrusted to him, he can be absent from his diocese for a reasonable cause but not beyond a month, whether continuous or interrupted, and provided that he makes provision so that the diocese will suffer no detriment from his absence.
§3. He is not to be absent from the diocese on Christmas, during Holy Week, and on Easter, Pentecost, and the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, except for a grave and urgent cause.
§4. If a bishop has been illegitimately absent from the diocese for more than six months, the metropolitan is to inform the Apostolic See of his absence; if it concerns the metropolitan, the senior suffragan is to do so.

It seems obvious that Anon@9:51, in referring to the public interest and “talking about something they know nothing about” him or herself knows little of the public interest issue at the heart of the RCC sale of the redundant Newcastle school site.
Had 9:51 read the local papers at the time, h/she would have read that the relevant land was donated by the former owners, the Annesley estate, for the benefit of the citizens of Newcastle: ALL the citizens, not just the RCs. It was somehow “acquired” by the RCC which built a school on the site. Many years later, when the school became redundant 3/4 years ago, the RCC/PP agreed to sell the land to the local council to build a much needed leisure centre/swimming pool complex on what was seen as an ideal site. But the RCC then reneaged and sold the site to Lidl, reportedly at a higher price: money counts with RCC hierarchy! So it seems, at least according to 9:51, that those good folks’ needs down in Newcastle, people of all faiths and none, is not up for debate in the public interest, and only an “internal parish matter.”
Typical cradle catholic/RC clerical outlook and arrogance. (Irrespective of whether 9:51 is a cleric or not)
