LEGIONARIES OF CHRIST REPORT CHAIN OF ABUSE AS VICTIMS WENT ON TO ABUSE OTHERS.

By Cindy Wooden Catholic News Service

ROME (CNS) — Demonstrating a strong “chain of abuse,” the Legionaries of Christ said its founder, the late Father Marcial Maciel Degollado, sexually abused at least 60 minors and that at least another 51 youngsters were abused by Father Maciel’s victims or victims of his victims.

The Rome-based headquarters of the Legionaries released a report Dec. 21 looking at the “phenomenon of abuse of minors” by members of the order from its founding in 1941 through December 2019.

At the same time, the Legionaries of Christ in the United States released the names of four members who had been “active in ministry” in the United States and against whom there were “substantiated sexual abuse allegations.”
The commission that drafted the international report “identified 175 minors as victims of sexual abuse committed by 33 priests of the congregation” in the 78 years since the order’s founding, according to “available records.” The commission noted, however, that it “does not claim that its study could have discovered all cases” or that all victims have come forward.
“The vast majority of the victims were boys between the ages of 11 and 16,” the report said.

The report found that 111 of the 175 victims — more than 63% — “were either victims of Father Maciel or were victims of his victims.”

Since its founding, the Legionaries said, “1,353 priests were ordained in the congregation, 367 of whom either since left or have passed away.” The 33 sexually abusive priests represent 2.4% of all those ordained.

In addition, the report said, 74 Legionaries novices and seminarians abused minors; three of the 74 went on to become priests who abused youngsters, and they are included among the 33 priests who abused.

Of the 74, it said, 60 never became priests of the order. The report did not give statistics on how many of the 60 decided to leave and how many were ejected from the order, although it said “most” of them were dismissed.

“Of the 14 who were ordained, two have since passed away, two have restrictions, four are under investigation, and six are no longer under the jurisdiction of the congregation,” the report said. “According to the historical records, of the three that were ordained after 2005, the superiors admitted them to ordination without knowledge of the facts.”

The report makes a distinction between what happened before and after 2005. After the Vatican re-opened an investigation into decades-old claims that Father Maciel was a serial abuser, the Mexican-born priest stepped down as head of the Legionaries in January 2005.
When then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected Pope Benedict XVI four months later, he accelerated the investigation and, in 2006, ordered Father Maciel to cease all public ministry and withdraw to “a life of prayer and penance.” At the time, the Legionaries continued to support Father Maciel’s claims of innocence.

The report on abuse within the Legionaries acknowledged that members became “aware, in a slow and painful process, of the abuses Father Maciel committed and of the consequences they had on the congregation.”

At least twice — in 2016 and again in February — Pope Francis has told reporters that Pope Benedict was the reason Father Maciel finally was dealt with after decades of allegations, including some made in the 1950s.
Pope Benedict tenaciously investigated the allegations and insisted “there was a need to clean the church’s dirt, the garbage,” Pope Francis said in 2016.
In February, flying back from Abu Dhabi, Pope Francis again spoke about Pope Benedict’s efforts to fight clerical sexual abuse. In his remarks, he did not mention the Legionaries of Christ, but it was widely presumed he was speaking of Father Maciel’s case.

As prefect of the doctrinal congregation, the pope said, then-Cardinal Ratzinger “had all the papers, all the documents, about a religious organization that had internal sexual and financial corruption.
His efforts, Pope Francis said, were repeatedly blocked. After finally being able to present a report to St. John Paul II, Cardinal Ratzinger returned to his office and “said to his secretary: ‘Put it in the archive, the other party won.'”
“We must not be scandalized by this, they are steps in a process,” Pope Francis told reporters.

Finally, when Pope Benedict succeeded St. John Paul, “the first thing he said was: ‘Bring those papers from the archive,'” and he began the process that removed Father Maciel from ministry, Pope Francis said.

The Legionaries’ report said 14 of the 33 priests who abused others were themselves abused in the order.

The order’s minor seminaries “were the most vulnerable environment” for abuse to occur, both by priests and by other seminarians, it said. Those institutions were a major focus when “safe environment policies” were implemented, beginning in 2015.

“The last known case of sexual abuse in a minor seminary of the congregation occurred seven years ago, in 2012,” the report said. And the last known allegation of sexual abuse in a Legionaries school was in 2013.

“We deplore and condemn the abuses committed in our history, as well as those institutional or personal practices that may have favored or encouraged any form of abuse or re-victimization,” the order said. ” We ask forgiveness of the victims, their families, the church and society for the grave harm that members of our congregation have caused.”

“Because of differences in national legislation and due to the ethical considerations at play, the report does not include a list of the names of priests who have credible allegations of abuse of minors,” the report said. But “the Legion of Christ in the United States has decided to publish its list, according to the practice of several dioceses and religious congregations.”

Two of the four Legionaries on the U.S. list have since died: Brother Francisco Cardona, who allegedly abused students at Immaculate Conception Apostolic School in Center Harbor, New Hampshire, in the 1980s; and Father Guillermo Izquierdo, who abused young men while novice director in Cheshire, Connecticut, in 1982-1993.

A third member, Father Benjamin Cieply, has been dismissed from the order, the Legionaries said, explaining “there is a high probability that he sexually abused a minor in 2016 during his probationary period in the Archdiocese of Miami. He was removed from ministry and his case was referred to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Judgment is still pending.”

The fourth is Fernando Cutanda, a former Legionaries priest, who, like Brother Cardona, “abused students during his tenure as a formator at the Immaculate Conception Apostolic School, in Center Harbor, New Hampshire, in the 1980s.”

PAT SAYS:

I do not believe the figures published by the Legionaries.

I believe the true figures are far higher.

The Legionaries have always been a secret, lying crowd.

Maciel gave the Vatican and John Pole 11 millions.

In return the Pole and Vatican covered up for him and allowed him to continue abuse.

The Legionaries should be completely suppressed

The Pole should be de-sainted.

PROFOUND DISRESPECT FOR THE MASS

In this video, you see a priest, who thinks the Mass is all about him, disrespecting the Mass.

These narcissistic, all singing and dancing priests, use the Mass to boost their ego.

Its one of the reasons some people hark after the reverence of the old Latin Mass.

Pat, the horror of abuse within and by the Legionaries of Christ is absolutely abhorrent. I never had anybrespectbfor the black, harsh, crazy and bizarre Penitential practices off this order. I believe it thwarted many men in a sexual, spiritual, mental and emotional way, thus causing much abuse. A cultic organisation, sadly. The scooter priest – whom I know should have continued scooting far, far away. An utterly stupidly thing to do. While giving and getting a good laugh, it demeans the Mass. All that these visitors will remember is the scooter priest, not the Christ Child. A foolish man.

Another indictment of the toxic legacy of JPII.
Your final comment about the jamboree that passes for liturgy also struck a chord with me. I am wary of the baggage, let alone some of the people, which comes with the Old Rite, but have to say that the experience of attending a simple Low Mass in the 1962 form on a Sunday afternoon in Manchester or Liverpool affects me profoundly. I simply can no longer put up with a Mass which begins with everybody having to welcome each other – the whole performance being repeated at the Peace – and a scrum at Communion administered by the local busybodies even when several priests are present – as useless and unedifying as they are . Also why are the hymns now played in English RC churches almost entirely derived from an imperialist 19th C Anglican culture? I stayed at home thus Christmas rather than endure a diet of carols.

About five years ago, having never heard of the Singing Priests, I went to the funeral mass for Dr John Galway, a Newtownards GP and one of my childhood/schoolboy best friends. I found the whole funeral experience most upsetting. That presiding cleric, one of those “singing priests” just used the service to place himself centre stage by incessantly singing at every opportunity. I found it profoundly embarrassing and disconcerting to listen to.
Dr John was a gifted pianist, but knowing him I’m sure he would not have wished for such a self serving “performance ” for that’s what it was.

Anon@10:21: If indeed you are one of John’s family then I regret and apologise. My intention was to place focus on that cleric, who to my mind, inappropriately used the service as a means of displaying HIS singing ability rather than placing respectful emphasis on the high character, ability and caring work of the deceased.
Having not seen him for over 40 years, nevertheless I felt it right to pay my respects to your father by driving the 30+ miles to his funeral service. I shared many a boyhood journey with John.
But I, for one, found that clerics incessant singing completely unnecessary and personally distracting. If you regularly follow this blog you will know that as a humanist I have scant regard for RC services, but do respectfully attend rites of passage services of all religions where I hold the subject in high regard.
Now having explained my perspective I make two observations.
1) It is noticeable how quickly that cohort of “good Christian RC followers” (sic) jump on a bandwagon of hostile criticism of one who dares question their beliefs and practices. It were ever so!
2) As I strongly suspect you are NOT of John’s family I invite you to prove me wrong by giving the initial letter of the first name of his siblings. That will test your provenance.

The LCs should definitely be suppressed. I often met their seminarians in Rome. They went always in pairs, dressed exactly alike, all in double-breasted suits, even their hairstyles were the same. They reminded me of American Mormon missionaries.
And the fact that abuse happened in their junior seminaries is a further reason to shut down all remaining junior seminaries, including the abusive one in Vatican City, and remove all teaching priests from schools.
As for the scooter priest, he’s Fr Peter O’Connor. The state of him, he’s 60 ffs carrying on like that and he’s not even a Dublin diocese priest, but on loan from Ferns. You’d think coming from such a sullied diocese as Ferns would make a priest wise up.

Like

One of the many problems with the LCs was that until recently they took a fourth vow, the “vow of charity,” a vow not to criticize superiors and to report those who do so. According to the Legionary web page (available at the Internet Archive–page has been taken down from the live web site), the vow covers something that would be obligatory anyway, namely the avoidance of slander. However, the website does not give the actual text of the vow–apparently it is a secret, despite the denial that the vows are secret. The text of the vow is, apparently “I, (Name), promise and vow never to criticize any act of governance of the superior, nor his person, and to inform the superior if I am aware that anyone has broken this promise.”

Richard Sipe told the journalists in Boston to expect the percentage of abusive priests to be around 7%, which would mean you are right and these figures would be too low. I would expect them to be higher in the legionaries because of the order having a culture abuse, which would make it acceptable and normal.

How is it that it’s priests from the Legion who are routinely invited to bashes at the nunciature? That was the case during the pontificate of JPII at any rate?

8.38: I think the vast majority of priests bring a sense of reverence and respect to the Mass. There are times when people who’ve been absent for a long time, perhaps years, who have zero awareness of where they are. They are a huge problem. I’ve never believed in gimmickery liturgy. It can go so wrong and it is embarrassing. No priest should ever make himself the centre or focus of any celebration by unnecessary singing, homilies everywhere at mass and by being jocose, especially at funerals. But priests in general have the right perspective.

It is edifying, and sobering, to recall that neither the LC, nor any other RC religious order, would have been open about the sexual abuses committed against children, minors, and adults were it not for the naming and shaming by a free Press of these Godless institutions. God does not exist, and the conduct of these institutions proves this truism, over and over. If God did exist, then we should see conduct diametrically different from the disgusting self-preservation and self-protectiin we have witnessed from these institutions. Even a pope (a self-styled vicar of the Nazarene who, if he existed at all, was nothing more than an inspiring speaker,) bowed down to the commands of the Godless RC church when he ordere all the evidence on sexual abuse by priests to be filed away for another time. Had he cared about the victims he could have gone to the Press, which, like a true modern-day Christ, has set free from bondage countless children physically? emotiinally, and spiritually crucified by vile RC priests. But he walked away from their plight, doubtedless with at least one eye on obtaining the papacy once JPII had finished fossilising in office.
None not one of these hypocritical RC clergy comes out of this evil morass with anything other than moral filth clinging to him.
If you want proof that the claims of divinity made of Jesus of Nazareth are utterly groundless, look to the behaviour, or its lack, by RC clergy. Not one of these men was inspired by Christ to do the right thing here, because Christ does not exist. If he did, he would have very serious questions to answer…about his sins of ommission. His clergy certainly do.
As for the priest on a scooter, why all the fuss. Mass clearly had ended. And if you think the Tridentine Mass wasn’t about the self-glorification of the priest, look again.
No matter what style of Mass is preferred, it will always be about the performing monkey at its centre, the priest, because there is no organ grinder: there is no Christ.

If you’re agnostic and trapped in the priesthood how else could you survive without the ego boost of popularity? I’m sure that priest went back to the sacristy, kissed each vestment as he placed them back on the press, washed his hands, knelt for his thanksgiving and then took communion to the sick, came home said the rosary , then the office and later made his daily visit to the tabernacle, he didn’t stay at the church door glad handing like a politican laughing loudly, then back to a boiling hot room with his pockets stuffed full of envelopes full of notes and the tables covered with bottles and chocolates

Just a question.
The blog mentions millions being given to the Vatican. If JP2 (or any other pope) suppressed the Legion would they be able to order that all the other millions be transferred to the Vatican?
It’s just a question because if the motivation really was money it might be in the Vatican’s interest to go against the Legion.

Like

1. I have no doubt at all that these figures from the LCs are heavily edited and a severe understatement of the real situation. The LCs are masters at disinformation and obfuscation. Don’t trust what they are saying
2. As well as abuse in all forms inflicted by the LCs, there is also the financial abuse that they excelled at, targeting people whom they thought of as an easy touch and likely to be a source of money. They had teams of LCs whose responsibility it was to do this work. I wish that many other people would sue them for this, and reclaim monies that their relative left to the LCs, much of it under pressure and coercion.
3. The money the LCs reaped was used for their own purposes, but also was used by the LC hierarchy to muzzle any opposition or investigation. JPII was completely taken in, as were numerous other Vatican people, and so the LCs were able to carry on with their activities with little accountability. JPII et al were in thrall of the millions that the LCs gave them. Again, that money should be tracked. There will be various cardinals and bishops who are living quite comfortably because of money that the LCs gave them to keep quiet. In any other walk of life that money would be reclaimed as criminal proceeds. Why not the cardinals and other powerful people in the Church ?
4. The priest on the scooter is a complete muppet. More seriously, this “look at me” / “it’s all about me” clerical culture has a sinister side. It leads these kind of people in to thinking that they are so gifted and so talented and so adored and so loved that they can get away with anything, and can pull the wool over the people’s eyes. That is part of the rotten clerical culture of being set apart, being special, being unaccountable, and reinforced by that idiotic and poisonous theology of priesthood spouted by JPII and all that ontological change and difference model. And we know where all that stuff has got us, don’t we ? When I watch or listen to these priests fawning over themselves and each other as being so special and so talented, I want to vomit. But, they are taught all this stuff from day one in the seminary, inculcated in them by a narcissistic, self-perpetuating, incestuous clerical culture. We all know that it is unhealthy and has terrible consequences for the Church and especially for those who are vulnerable. So, why is no one doing anything about it, I ask. Answers on a postcard, dear bishops, please !
5. Anybody any more news of Fr Prior (SJ ??) and whether he will be returned to his diocese ? From what I have read, if even a sliver of it is true, there are grounds for looking at him and his behaviour in ministry very closely. There appears to be ground for caution with him. I doubt if the SJs will want to take the risk. I’m somewhat surprised that he was taken on in the first place. Surely the SJ intelligence network should have done due diligence before he was admitted to their noviciate ? Seems not. My prediction ? He will be let go, return to his diocese, keep his head down and then reappear in some small rural parish where he will live out his days.

Silence?

It was John of God who coined the saying that the language of God is silence. If he meant ‘inner stillness’, then I should agree with him. But outer silence? No.There can be such silence accompanied by the din of inner turmoil.

Front page news in today’s Telegraph:

Victims’ of Church of England preacher reveal allegations of naked beatings, ice baths and massages.

Details have emerged of the allegations against the Revd Jonathan Fletcher, who was Minister of Emmanuel Church in Wimbledon, from 1982 to 2012, and an influential figure among Evangelicals in the Church of England.

One of the Church of England’s leading evangelical figures could face a criminal investigation, as victims of his abuse spoke out for the first time about being subjected to naked ice baths, beatings and massages.

Rev Jonathan Fletcher, 77, was banned from preaching after it emerged that he had “spiritually abused” vulnerable adults at the London church where he used to minister, the Daily Telegraph revealed in June.

Now five alleged victims – all men who wish to remain anonymous – have come forwards to detail the spiritual, psychological and physical abuse they claim to have suffered.

A number of Mr Fletcher’s alleged victims are also seeking legal advice to explore grounds for a criminal investigation amid claims that Mr Fletcher abused his power.

This is the same charge faced by the late disgraced bishop Peter Ball – a friend of Prince Charles who was jailed in 2015 for sexually abusing 18 young men over three decades. He admitted charges of indecent assault and misconduct in a public office.

Despite being stripped of his Church powers by the Bishop of Southwark in 2017 after allegations against him emerged, the former vicar repeatedly flouted the ban and travelled throughout the UK, Europe and New Zealand giving talks.

Mr Fletcher has since admitted to subjecting a prayer group to naked beatings as “light-hearted forfeits” if they failed to maintain “healthy and holy living”.

Victims have now told The Telegraph they were subjected to repeated sexually inappropriate comments and questions about masturbation, intimate massages, beatings, ice baths, bullying and intimidation over a number of years.

Some claimed they were beaten in what was referred to as “six of the best with a gym shoe on a bare backside”. Mr Fletcher also allegedly asked to be beaten in mutual punishment for watching pornography or masturbating.

He allegedly told one victim: ‘I’m afraid I have not fulfilled promises [about not masturbating] weeks ago, it happened on this occasion,’ before asking to be beaten.

All alleged victims told The Telegraph that despite reporting their concerns to Emmanuel Church, where he was something of a “benign dictator”, their concerns were neither taken seriously nor acted upon.

The five men described their former vicar as “charming” and a “magnetic” “gifted preacher” “with a good sense of humour”.

Yet they also believe he was “manipulative and controlling” and sat “as judge, jury and executioner on whether you were fit for ministry” – a combination of characteristics which resulted in, they allege, an abuse of his power.

Some of the five men also claimed that Mr Fletcher performed oil-based naked or partially-clothed massages on them – or requested them to massage him – and insisted that they join him in a naked sauna which made them feel “uncomfortable”.

They also alleged that he would “humiliate” and make derogatory comments about peoples’ bodies, and that staff meetings at Emmauel Church were intimidating and “laden with homoerotic” nicknames for the former vicar.

One man said that the former minister’s actions left him “feeling dirty, ashamed” and “mistrustful” of others.

Another said the abuse left him feeling like “a neglected and abused dog”. “The bullying and damage it did to my confidence was the hardest part,” another added.

“While you’re there you see the influence and the power Jonathan has and he has all his connections, up and down the country…

“We don’t feel that we can go anywhere, basically,” he added. “There’s no one high up that we trust, basically…

“We desperately want the truth to be told. We want the truth to come out so that victims can feel free to tell their story as well.”

Another added: “As much as we don’t want to wash our dirty laundry in public, sometimes it is necessary to speak openly about wrongdoing in order to comfort victims in their distress and to encourage others to come forward so that the full extent of what’s happened can be addressed.

One alleged victim said last night: “There should be a criminal investigation into not only Jonathan’s activities but also how witnesses have been silenced.”

Weird goings on in Blackpool, Lancashire
Dear Bishop Pat
I have just returned to my home
town of Sheffield after spending Christmas in Blackpool, Lancashire. I came across a Church near the Town Centre, called St John’s, close by my lodgings and turned up for Mass. There was a young and handsome Priest in his 20’s saying Mass in Latin, his back turned to the congregation wearing an old fashioned black beretta and black vestments. I was flabbergasted. I spoke to a couple off elderly folks who said that they had to put up with this and their Bishop simply ignores their letters of concern. The Parish are also fundraising to move the Altar so that the Priest can always say Mass this way. Are these young men mad? He is a very handsome young man who clearly thinks that this is normal. Are they trained to do this nowadays? Is it any wonder that attendance is an all time low? I am presuming that the Bishop needs to authorise Mass in this tradition? Is this the norm in this Diocese? During my second week I found another Church in Blackpool Centre, Sacred Heart. Nice to see a normal Priest. Elderly man who said Mass sincerely. We could see him and understand him and it was busy. Noon Mass with nearly 100 people, the other place had 7 people there. Are other Dioceses moving backwards? I am a returning Catholic after many years away, so good to know what other places do. Came across this blog so hoping you can assist. Thanks.

Nick at 8.47. Mass is Mass. God knows that you made the effort to attend, so don’t worry about what you think is normal and what isn’t. He has a plan for the Church that will unfold in due course.

Mass is Mass?
That’s not what traditionalist Roman Catholics think of the New Rite.

Thanks for this, Nick. I think we all get the picture only too clearly, and could write the rest of the script ourselves!

Not the handsome priest in Blackpool again zzzzzz , he’s wearing black vestments for Advent yeah right, you don’t like the old Mass we know but it’s one church. I wouldn’t keep going on about going to Blackpool it’s a real dump and being taken over by Muslims like Preston already has so the Catholic Churches will end up as mosques regardless of which direction the altar faces or which priest is in charge.

Black vestments have never been worn during Advent, unless for a Requiem. Incidentally modern Catholic funerals are another embarrassment now usually entirely divorced from the faith. Like weddings they are shameless opportunities for self-promotion and whitewash.

He would wear black if celebrating a funeral or offering Mass for deceased. I have been in that Church and agree that he is odd
and handsome!

Out of curiosity I looked at the website for St John Vianney and was impressed by the emphasis on welcome and inclusivity. The three priests look representative of different types and styles with the old Irish Canon probably the least interested in lace and birettas.

I do like Latin and have even attended a Latin Episcopalian mattins at a conference for classics’ teachers, but even this service used English readings. My question is how many folks using and attending Latin services can actually understand Latin.
If they have to use Latin why not use the missal of 1964 which retained plenty of Latin but also had a goodly portion of the vernacular. I still remember every word of the Latin canon which I heard recited aloud every day from that missal for several years. That’s why I can’t understand those young whipper snappers who advocate a silent Latin canon.
For those of a more ecumenical frame of mind there is always the last edition of The English Missal. Also it’s PC since it was said to have been the work of a woman, according to Hunwicke+. The Ordo has a bit of Latin but the propers are in English.

I’d stay away from the Ordinariate if I were you. The way young queens celebrate the Old Mass is actually very Anglo-Catholic – ie affected, prissy and self-referential. The authentic old bastard Catholic priests of yore had perfunctory indifferent style, which you can still see on YouTube in the gloriously off-hand and rasping delivery of none other than Richard, Cardinal Cushing celebrating Kennedy‘s funeral Mass.

Apropos the comment on the Glasgow Pipeworks, the Belfast Pipeworks closed months ago, thanks to Grindr no doubt. The Union Street bar is kept going by hen parties but the men are an endangered species. Changed times.

If I were you, I’d silence the fire alarms, during Mass, as she literally likes to PILE ON the incense 💨 💨 💨
She’s actually quite alright once you speak to her; she’s a hoot and a sweetheart. She has a heart of gold.
Terribly old fashioned, though lol 😂
Don’t give her too much of a hard time, she’s only just ordained and was allowed to dress-up like lady Gadiva at St Charles when Fr J Preston VD, and Jolley Asst VD, were around.
She has got a genuine Pastor’s heart and is a very good listener when one needs a shoulder.
Believe me! You could have a lot worse, especially with Erstwhile of the underground in charge!
+Kelly was a great loss to Liverpool. A very good man.

For the information of those with a brain:

Anon@ 10:13: While entitled to express a critical opinion on MMM’s comments, that ‘opinion’ of the celebrant’s “performance” (for that’s what it appeared to MMM) as an objective first hand personal appraisal lacks authenticity. Were you there?

Have just seen that the warbling priest Eugene ohagan has been made an MBE. He will be in his element. So far up his own jacksy it’s not true. Status status status is all he cares about. He’s now a member of somewhere that doesn’t exist anymore. What a prat
