KEY POINTS

A cardinal ousted from the RomaCathoChurch paid dozens of clerics, some of hom were involved in evaluating claims of his sexual misconduct, more than $600,000 over nearly two decades, according to The Washington Post.

Theodore McCarrick, who was archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington from 2001 to 2006, sent money donated to the church by wealthy donors to more than 100 Catholic officials, including two popes, according to financial records obtained by the Post.

Among the more than 100 recipients were Pope John Paul II, who received $90,000, and Pope Benedict XVI, who received $291,000, the Post reported.

Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, archbishop emeritus of Washington, speaks during a news conference with senators and national religious leaders to respond to attempts at vilifying refugees and to call on lawmakers to engage in policymaking and not ‘fear-mongering’ at the U.S. Capitol December 8, 2015 in Washington, DC.

A cardinal ousted from the Roman Catholic Church paid dozens of clerics, some of whom were involved in evaluating claims of his sexual misconduct, more than $600,000 over nearly two decades, according to The Washington Post.

Theodore McCarrick, who was archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington from 2001 to 2006, sent money donated to the church by wealthy donors to more than 100 Catholic officials, including two popes, according to financial records obtained by the Post.
The Vatican removed McCarrick from public ministry in June 2018 amid allegations of sexual abuse decades earlier involving a teenage altar boy. It was revealed at that time that he had been accused over the years of sexual misconduct by three others.

Among the more than 100 recipients were Pope John Paul II, who received $90,000, and Pope Benedict XVI, who received $291,000, the Post reported.

A spokesman for Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, who received $6,500 from McCarrick, told the Post the money “never had any effect on the Cardinal’s decision-making as an official of the Holy See.”

Clerics who received checks characterized the money from McCarrick as Christmas gifts and said it was spent on charity or other services, the Post reported.

McCarrick’s attorney declined to comment on the latest report when CNBC emailed.

But McCarrick, now 89, said last year in a statement that he had “absolutely no recollection” of the abuse involving the teenager.

“While I have absolutely no recollection of this reported abuse, and believe in my innocence, I am sorry for the pain the person who brought the charges has gone through, as well as for the scandal such charges cause our people,” he said.

McCarrick in September reiterated his claim, saying he does “not believe that I did the things that they accused me of,” and also saying that he believes his accusers and others with similar stories “were encouraged” to lie. “There were many who were in that situation who never had any problems like that,” he said.

Church officials said the Vatican will release an official report in 2020.
Earlier this year, the Washington Post published a report that showed that Bishop Michael J. Bransfield, the leader of the Catholic Church in West Virginia, gave about $350,000 to clergymen before he was ousted for sexual misconduct.
Among the recipients of the cash gifts were young priests who had accused him of allegations of sexual misconduct and at least a dozen cardinals. Bransfield took the money out of a personal account over a period of a decade.

PAT SAYS

McCarrick epitomizes the rot at the heart of the RCC – money, power and sex – even and especially child sex

The episcopate and clericaldom is a big secret space in which all this happens and in which perpetrators are protected.

The only commandment: “Thou shalt not be caught’.

And when you are caught you must submit to be thrown under the bus – but you be given a nice roof over your head and all the lolly you need.

McCarrick is carrying the can for so many others in the USA and Vatican – including corrupt popes like JP 11.

How is your post relevant to my comment?
Humanity? What’s the connection? Is it lacking humanity to be truthful?
I told the truth: the Singing Priests in that video do not strike me as being manly. That was my honest impression, and that’s a fact. Why does it trouble you? Do you hate truth? Would you rather I had lied?
I could have added that the behaviour of Eugene was clownish and embarrassing, and judging especially by Delargy’s face, that unspoken comment would have been spot on.
Welcome to the world of critical comment. The Singing Priests are by now used to it. I’ll wager they are more robust at dealing with it than you clearly aren’t.

How is this news? Surely it was already plain that McCarrick was more like a croupier than a cleric.
The other way he epitomises the rot at the heart of the church is that he apparently sees himself on the good side. Many criminals justify their actions in one way or another in their own minds and that is why they then deny their criminality.
It’s exactly like the clerics who belong to a world wide criminal organisation and then post on here that you’re ignoring the good priests do 🤣

Sadly, unaccountable power, prestige and financial transactions can all emerge to create scandal, corruption and abuse. We see this in many charities, large organisations, the more recent being the FAI crisis. When there is no proper oversight by totally independent bodies, corruption and fraud are inevitable. I personally have seen this in 2 schools I worked in, in parishes where 1 person had total financial control. All institutions, charities and Churches should be mandated to have independent financial regulators. In our Diocese the regulations are very stringent and are frequently tested, monitor and administered at parish level. However, the narrative of McCarrick’s largesse is outrageous. If it could be definitively established that monies given were used specifically for charities, then we might feel less outraged but as it stands the optics are another nail in the Church’s coffin. Whenever money which is given in good faith for good purposes is abused for personal benefit, this is morally repugnant and an affront to the dignity of God’s people and equally an affront to Christ.

Anon@ 9:26: Those exactly were my thoughts at the “performance” of that priest at the funeral service I referred to earlier. Those of you who check back to older blogs will have noted that I challenged the alleged/self proclaimed child of the deceased to show evidence/provenance. Nothing produced. The silence is revealing.

Even had the comment been from the son ( which I don’t believe for a moment considering the speed of response ) I think your judgment of the funeral perfectly reasonable, MMM. By their nature, requiems, marriages and indeed many sacraments are public not private events. Should the family not wish this, they can organize something in private and/or bypass the Church. What people over-whelmingly require, however, is a lavish propaganda spectacle extolling the virtues of the deceased or happy couple. The Church is now pathetic enough to go along with this, and so you have singing-dancing priests pandering to popular demand. Death is the end of the ego, and a funeral commends the person now stripped of illusion to the loving mercy of God. If you neither believe nor want that, then organize your own fandango down at the crem to the tune of I Did it My Way.

Oh, it’s conclusive alright, in this case.
I smelt a rat almost from the get-go. I stated one of my reasons for this two days earlier. Others are the poor style and the poor expression in that bogus post: its inelegant abbreviation (FYI), along with questionable sentence construction and questionable punctuation. Not the standard of education and intelligence one might reasonably expect from the child of a GP.
From a seminarian or a young priest these days?
Absolutely.

Like

The reason an argument from silence is never conclusive is that the silence may be explained by a myriad of other possibilities. In this case, these could include: the poster hasn’t seen the reaction to their assertion; they may wish to delay responding for an infinite number of reasons; or, more likely, they may not wish to dignify the unwarranted weaponising of their father’s name as being worthy of reply.

Pat, the posters at 5:40 are delusional and bearing false witness. In short, MC are liars.

Mischief is invoked by them, in this case, when they don’t read a situation in the same was as their interlocutors do. How delusional is that.

In the absence of an argument for exonerating the unjustifiable actions of a third party in referring to a funeral in derogatory terms, and worse, in naming the deceased without prior notification of his family, MC characterise negatively those who take a different view from theirs.

If that were not sufficient indication of delusion, they (MC) make statements without proof claiming identity between and among posters.

A dose of wishful thinking leading to a diarrhoea of words and a constipation of truth.

Funny how all the recipients of McCarrick’s gifts now claim they gave them to charities, which raises the question why McCarrick or Bransfield thought it appropriate to send them the money in the first place, rather than support their own causes. Surely Popes and Cardinals in Rome have enough cash in their own pockets to fund their projects? What, I wonder, was Old Mother Burke’s charity of choice: the Distressed Lacemakers Association? Pull the other one, Dorothy!

Pat I liked what you said the other week that the oratory is not a charity. It annoys me that these old pals clubs can set themselves up as charities with the stated aim of the promotion of religion, when the only aim is to feather the nests of themselves and each other.

The Priests – I’d be interested to know a bit more about how they use the money raised by their performances. Yes, I expect there will be expenses etc., but it would be interesting to know what proportion goes in to the charitable causes they go on about so much, and how much finds its way in to their personal bank accounts ? I have a sense that they like us to think that they don’t benefit from all this stuff – except for the adulation and the limelight and the prancing around, which they love – but I am sure there must be some quid pro quo. I’m sure they’re not surviving just on their priestly stipend ? Generous enough though that is. Just wondering, just asking…..

If you are right about this, it is a serious moral injustice.

I shouldn’t patronise any establishment that charges so obscenely for its products while paying its staff so little. These places should be boycotted.

In Economics, products that bear these prices are referred to as ‘goods of ostentation’. The principle behind the overpricing (and it is long proven) is that some people, from social snobbery, will pay such charges because, in their navel-gazing minds at least, it will enhance their social status and their self-esteem.

The ‘Rat Race’ is not a literary or journalistic fiction, but a study in human psychology.

The Romanist priesthood is a satanic parody of what Christ commanded. How else are we to account for the moral sludge (child-sexual abuse, financial corruption, etc) that has built up through the exercise of this vile institution. 😊

Were we to take Jesus seriously, every Romanist priest would have a millstone fastened round his podgy neck and then be dropped into the deep, blue sea. What a joy that would be! 😀 An excuse for a great day-out. And each Romanist would sink promptly to the seabed, like a fibreless turd in a toilet bowl.

‘Twould seem not, since he has been married a bunch of times. But you never know.
He is a hypocrite, however. He once criticised Ian Paisley as a part-cause of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, and yet he (Galway) once caused trouble himself by inflammatorily describing Northern Ireland as ‘the British-occupied part of Ireland’. Such words could have come from Gerry Adams. Incidentally, the Unionist population here are the British who occupy this territory, and Galway seemed to imply that we were occupiers rather than natives.
Galway, Protestant-born in staunchly loyalist East Belfast, describes himself as Irish, and his politics are nationalist or republican. I mention this in passing since the, er, ‘great’ man accepted a knighthood from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Good to see consistent, and politically principled behaviour from Irish nationalists/republicans. But I suppose everyone has his price.
