MC ALEESE TOLD TO TONE DOWN RHETORIC ABOUT THE RC CHURCH.

Chai Brady Irish Catholic

A respected Papal biographer has called on former president Mary McAleese to “tone down the rhetoric” after she said Pope Francis hasn’t done enough to reform the Church.

Dr Austen Ivereigh, who wrote the book The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope, tackled Prof. McAleese after she made the comments on the Late Late Show last week.

“Mary McAleese is an important progressive voice, but I think she can be more helpful for the Church if she tones down the rhetoric and looks at some of the concrete changes that Francis has made, and she will be taken more seriously,” Dr Ivereigh told The Irish Catholic.

This comes after she stated the Pope hadn’t met expectations of reform in the Church, saying: “I don’t think he’s been a great reformer in the sense that he hasn’t changed anything doctrinally”.

Mistake

Dr Ivereigh said the common mistake conservative voices make about the Church is that doctrine can’t be changed, while liberals believe change can only be implemented by changing doctrine.

“She [Mary McAleese] misunderstands the nature of Church reform. Reform in the Church tradition is always pastoral, that’s to say it’s about enabling the Church to better communicate the Gospel and to enable people better to live the Gospel, so that’s the nature of Church change,” he said.

Prof McAleese, now chancellor of Trinity College Dublin, said the Pope has made positive moves by stoking up debate.

She said since the time of Pope John XXII there has been talk of changing women’s role in the Church but because the decision-makers are men, “that voice is always going to be eliminated by virtue of the structure”.

“Francis in fairness to him has appointed quite a few women to the curia but that doesn’t cut it really, you’re talking about tiny numbers,” Prof. McAleese added.

However, Dr Ivereigh said that he would understand if a person was disappointed with Francis if they were looking at the Church “through the lens of contemporary notion of equality”, but that he doesn’t believe this leads can’t lead to a true understanding.

“For Mary McAleese and for others who think like her, the test of equality would be female ordination and until that happens she’s never going to believe that change is possible…” he said.

PAT SAYS

A few years ago Mary McAleese was going around Ireland licking Episcopal and clerical ass.

Now, she is some kind of liberal?

What changed her?

Was it the coming out of her son as gay and the RCC position that all gays are intrinsically disordered?

When she did a canon law degree in Rome a few years ago many in the city thought she was a nun with a mid life crisis.

I dont like McAleese.

She is a Catholic snob with a notion of herself.

The RCC is in self destruct mode and real reform of the evil entity is not possible.

We can just look forward to the day when it has shrunk in size and importance.

At this stage I’d love to see an RCC free Ireland.

But I’ll settle for a totally disgraced and irrelevant Irish RCC.

Actually the only topic she talked about seriously was the RCC, and I thought she spoke sensibly..

Mary McAleese may be impatient, but Pat Buckley is positively nihilistic. Ivereigh is wrong about reform being pastoral and not doctrinal — Vatican II brought reform (change) of doctrine on the Jews and on religious freedom. Trent also reformed doctrine. Doctrines that are cruel in their effects on human beings need correction.

It’s all about Big Mares at the end of the day and her massive ego. If they were kissing her ass and courting her, she would still be the “holy water hen“ she was previously.
I’m no fan of Kevin Farrell – no time for him in fact – but the reason McAleese is furious with him is because he basically told her “sorry honey. You can’t come in here and shout your big mouth off. Go and do that somewhere else but not in here in the Vatican. You don’t get to come into someone else’s territory and shit all over the place. There’s a great big wide world out there for you to do that – plenty of “choices” elsewhere for you pro abortion, ex catholic, former president. So off you go”.
Because he did that, McAleese is viciously spitting poison at him.
She’s a loud mouthed narcissist and an extremely self centred individual who, if she isn’t centre stage, becomes bombastic and spews the worst words in her belly.
She is, by turns, one minute and the next, mawkishly sentimental and obnoxiously furious.
I share your distaste of her, Pat and, for very different reasons, we come to the same conclusions about Big Mares Mac.
The best comment on her is Catherine Tate’s sketches about the Northern Ireland Mother who discovers she has a gay son

I think you’ve got your wish in the totally disgraced and irrelevant Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. It has already happened, a combination of an Ireland that has opened itself to a wider European, democratic, and diverse outlook; but, also hugely instrumental in this change has been the way the Roman Catholic Church has let itself down and been seen to be a duplicitous, untrustworthy, and coverup institution interested more in its own reputation and standing and its clerical caste. That has been so shocking to people who were prepared formerly to be loyal to it. Not now. And increasingly this will be the case, both in Ireland and in other developed and democratic countries, leaving a small rump of the Roman Catholic Church that will be increasingly traditional, conservative and regressive and populated by those who at at cultural, religious and moral war with the rest of society. Go along to any of the increasing and multiplying number of Oratories (Cong Orat) in the British Isles and you will see what I mean ! Interesting, entertaining and diverting for a little bit of light relief, but so odd and weird, and speaking only to the odd and weird.

I believe that Mary NcAleese would have a greater, more positive effect if she stopped lecturing and condemning in a mate only sort if way. She is an astute, clever and learned woman who has the abity to be a catalyst for relevant and necessary renewal within the Church. However, her dismissive and condescending approach is not effective not fruitful. I agree with.much of what she is verbalising but she is beginning to believe in herself too arrogantly, drowning out other voices of reason and balance. Pat, your desire for the destruction, bit by bit, of the Catholic Church, is your usual, shallow soundbyte. I am still waiting for the powwrful new embers of faith, spirituality and Christianity to spread like wild fire from Larne. Somehow, you are stuck in a time warp of cheap, unenlightening and shallow soundbytes with little of vision or creativity to offer apart from vengeance and put downs of all things Catholic. Be visionary, poetic and imaginative for once. Show us the way.

She visited my Parish as President for a centenary celebration in the 80’s and she applauded the religious and priests of the Parish to a standing ovation. She joined us in the Parish hall afterwards for refreshments and literally embraced every person present. That gesture alone ensured future re-election. She spoke affirmatively and lyrically of the importance of the local church, of the role of faith communities and singled out the clergy and religious by name. She, Mary Mc, throughout her tenure always praised the Catholic Church and supported the essence of its existence. She turned horrifically, like a bitch in heat, against the Church during the marriage equality referendum. Why? We know now. She has a right to her disapproval of what she considers oppressive and harmful but her constant negativity and aggressive criticisms bear little fruition. I’d like to know what this rich, comfortable, wealthy lady is doing for her parish community or indeed what she’s doing for the poor and the homeless. Actions speak louder than words. She has assigned a role of being a God mother to the nation, a kind of matron who feels we’re all in need of her advice, protection and solace. I have little regard for this overbearing school mistress and matron. Let her actually do something useful or involve herself in laudable projects that will actually make a difference to society. Her flowery, hyperbolic language is nauseating. And furthermore, her anti Catholic rhetoric fails to impact on a society that has already made up.uts mind about Catholicism. Mary is puffing and huffing wastefully long after the war is over. What a shame!

And if Mary McAleese was more…shall we say?…’receptive’ of the institutional Romanist Church back in the 1980s, weren’t most people alive at the time? Few knew then the absolute corruption and criminality among Romanist priests, especially among the Romanist episcopate.

Mary McAleese was entitled to change her opinion of this instution as report after report of its innate moral rotteness first trickled through to public consciousness, before becoming a torrent that swept away most of the trust it had arrogantly come to expect from Catholics and others over the centuries.

‘There is now a new culture which is trying to undo the truths of the entire Judeo-Christian system from the ground up by redefining the meaning of personhood, of marriage, of the family and classifying people on the basis of their sexual preference…’
