PAT SAYS

Father Lomasney was at the epicentre of the Kildorrery Gay Altar Sex incident.

At the time it was claimed that the other person involved was a Maynooth seminarian.

The bishop of Cloyne, William Crean responded to the scandal by saying and doing nothing publicly

It was claimed at the time that Father Lomasney was sent for therapy.

The death notice says he died “peacefully” which can imply he died while sleeping.

His funeral is taking place in his home family parish and not in the parishes he served.

At the time of the Kildorrery incident it was said that Fr Lomasney had a long term alcohol problem?

Maybe he had other addictions too?

Hopefully he is now at peace.

Pat, I think it is appropriate that you would express your sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased man. It’s the decent thing to do to think of the bereaved at a time such as this.
It’s very surprising that you have not done so. I’m sure you consider yourself a pastoral man – at least many of your utterances here would convey that impression.
May he rest in peace and may his family be comforted!

God rest his soul and best wishes to Fr Brian, a man of the people. A much deserved recipient.
A great and ‘from the heart’ interview with Eamonn Mallie on the TV last night.
He’s so dam right- Clericalism has our church in pieces, on it’s knees, my own parish is in ruins down to the Priest, sadly. We need to turn it around very quickly as Clergy has been the downfall off the Catholic Church.
Remove Clerical rule and God willing the Church will spring new growth.

Awful news. I hope that his death isn’t related to some of the vile comments on here that will no doubt continue today. Hopefully Pat will not publish them. We can be assured that the Lord will grant him eternal rest, recognise his human frailty and may the Angels lead him to Paradise. Pray for him and for those close to him. Special prayers for the young man involved in the incident that he may find peace.

What an insensitive, unpastoral and unnecessary intrusion into the family of this priest. Nothing kind or Christian at all. Pat has shamed himself yet again. Printed purely to slam and smash this priest further into his grave. The indecent haste to print this article is totally unjustified. I am glad the parents of this priest are not alive. They would be profoundly hurt by Buckley. Shame, shame. I feel great pity for this priest’s family. May God bless them. Ultimately, as followers of Christ, we believe in the merciful judgment of God – yes – even for priests who have personal failings.

9 34: No Pat, If don’t belong to any Gay Mafia: Another outrageous, indefensible comment. I am a Catholic Priest of another Diocese and I claim to follow Christ which means I leave all judgments ultimately to God. I’m afraid Pat, you HAVE shamed yourself again . I ask you: why do you always attribute stereotypical attributes to good, human and kind commentary? Why the need to cast your ‘gay mafia’ slur on all priests who do not share your hatred and vindictiveness? Immoral and utterly disgusting to elicit condemnation on this priest.

The Catholic priesthood today IS a gay profession.

No one has condemned Fr. Lomasney on here today.

But he was at the centre of a sacrilegious scandal.

You obviously see nothing wrong with having sex on an altar with a seminarian?

Like

9.34: Pat, why do you label people so rudely and arrogantly when you are legitimately challenged? For the family of this priest, his death is undoubtedly a time of great loss, grief and sadness, yet you think it appropriate to subject him to your nastiness. You are becoming a horrid, little guy with a mesdiah complec. You have abrogated to yourself a role which is more and more the antithesis of true gospel truth, kindness and mercy. Irrespective of this priest’s personal misdemeanours and behaviour, it is very sad that you feel it’s ok to bury him deeper by your condemnation. I just wonder if you ever, as a pastor – (questionable) – put on the mind and heart of Christ before you print your blog. Think for one moment about his family. I am glad his parents are not alive to witness your merciless witch hunting. Your selfish attitude disgraces CHRIST. I trust in the kindness of our God in mercy and justice, not your self serving notions.

Pat, with all due respect and as a regular reader and contributor on here I don’t think today’s blog is very appropriate and frankly I don’t think it does you any credit.
Whatever the mans shortcomings or faults he is now dead. He has a family who were probably scandalised at the time of the alleged incident but they are in mourning.
Can I pose you this question. When you eventually pass away would you like it if in the midst of grief your family had to endure unsavoury attacks on you or your reputation?

There was nothing wrong with what I wrote today. The priests death is newsworthy as he featured in a very public news story. I wished him to be at peace. Others wished him RIP. The unhelpful comments are coming from clerics who are unhappy at the state of the priesthood being exposed.

I have rather mixed feelings.
My first instinct when I read this post was to think that it was unfortunate to bring up the altar thing at the time of his death as it may cause further distress to his family (who conceivably may not have known or approved of any alleged liaison on an altar.
Then I thought how revoltingly pious the priests’ responses are on here.
What is with the modern tendency to mercy? To be assured of mercy, forgiveness or salvation is Calvinist protestantism pure and simple.
Frankly I would rather everyone had kept quiet about it, but if it is true about a sex act on an altar my most preferred outcome would be for the priest to resign as he plainly does not believe in the god he preaches.

I agree with the commentators who have reacted negatively to your blog today. It speaks volumes about your thinking. Not good Pat. Sorry!

Any death is very sad, regardless of who it is. Especially for the family. But why must we look over someone’s, let me say “contradictions and eulogise them to the high hilt. To the priests on here today it is one thing being pious and sweeping matters under the mat (a well rehearsed modus operandi of the RCC. It is another highlighting truth and contradictions. Yes we will all have to answer to God but let’s not start whitewashing someone’s past because it is a nicer narrative. There is no mistaking the fact that RCC clerics contain a lot of men who are gay. I have absolutely no problem with that. But don’t be a hypocrite and tell me what’s right and wrong whilst you do the complete opposite. I hope that this priest has made his peace with God but it is in the public interest to know the whole story. As a whole, the institution of the RCC is rotten to the core. I cannot understand how any sincere man or woman can continue in the employ of that organisation if it is their desire to follow Christ

Father Lomasney evidently had a rather torrid life, probably reflecting the conflicted lives of many Catholic priests. It seems to have come out in spades in his involvement in the altar sex act. He must have been a very ill and dysfunctional man to have been involved in such behaviour. I rather lost track of the story over the last year since it happened, but I do hope that he was given whatever help he needed by his diocese, and I don’t mean just covering it up, denying that it happened, or just carrying on as usual. I hope it was constructive and healing. Everybody deserves that when they are ill. However, his behaviour and whatever dysfunctionality and malaise occasioned it, should lead us to a wider discussion of the emotional, psychological, and sexual well being of priests, and the circumstances that so many of them find themselves in which involve living a double life, being led in to hypocrisy, and generally living one life as a priest in public and another life in private. That is not just damaging to the priest himself, but to the Church and its people as well. There are some serious questions to ask about how priesthood is lived. The matter has come up again in the last few days with Benedict 16th’s writing about celibacy. So, I would have some Christian compassion for Fr Lomasney, for his illness and weakness and sinfulness, and commend him to God’s mercy. I would not have the same compassion or understanding for a Church that sees its priests falling and living so dysfunctionally and insists on a model of priesthood and a theology of priesthood which, as we see so regularly, is not fit for purpose and can so easily lead to the kind of thing we saw in Fr Lomasney. What happened to the seminarian, by the way ?

Like

Ah ! That doesn’t sound good. I would have thought that he could have done with much support and intervention, even if he was the younger and seen as ‘victim’. If I was his bishop, I’d not be happy about having a ticking time bomb like that on my hands, because it will go off eventually. I would have preferred to have been reassured that he was getting help, advice and direction. But, doesn’t seem so. Sad for him, and sad for us. I see trouble ahead…..

Do you know for a certain fact that (a) it actually was a seminarian? and (b) that he is still in place? Your declaration would indicate also that you know his identity. 5.34: Magna: I would appreciate your views on the nature of the blog today since you claim to have met Fr. Lomasney. Do you, in all honesty and Christian compassion, believe it to be right, just and acceptable that this priest, irrespective of his personal failings and sinfulness, should be subjected to scrutiny on his death? Do you believe that this priest and his family especially in their loss and grief, deserve this humiliation on Pat’s blog? Forget about your hatred of Romanist Priests…Do you accept in integrity of conscience that this priest warrants our judgments, our analysis, that Pat perhaps misjudged his own judgment today? I believe he did. I am imagining myself as one of his family this moment and I feel there must be in very deep pain. Surely, that pain should not be compounded by merciless narratives. If you ask questions of someone, leave him free to answer of his own accord. Most of your ‘questions’ to me are, in fact, leading statements, suggesting the answer you want me to make, one that affirms your own opinion on this matter.
Michael Lomasney apparently did a terrible thing on a sacred altar, something I should never have believed him willing to do. If he actually did this thing, he caused very serious scandal indeed, for which no admission, nor any apology, was made publicly by him…as far as I am aware.
When people do terrible things, it is naive to expect their pasts to be expunged, on their deaths, from public consciousness. This, however, does not mean that people do not care.

The vulgar and vile vitriol which has emanated from your pen for as long as I’ve been reading this blog is gravely and grievously scandalous. When this is coupled with forays into biblical studies the result is nauseatingly revolting. It evinces a complete lack of self-reflection.
You are not in any position to point a finger at another human being, alive or dead.

Like

6.49: No Magna, I wasn’t trying to lead you to answer any question to suit ny concerns (you’re too clever to allow this happen to you) but since you admitted to knowing this priest and had not commented in your usual nasty, unkind anti Romanist priest mode, I was curious to ascertain your view on the ethics/morality of the narrative today so soon after the death of this priest. Yes, I agree that someone’s serious misdemeanours or immoral behaviour are not expunged by death, nonetheless there are other people – his family – for whom we should show respect, sensitivity and support. I still believe that Pat printed this story for his own gratification, as if he is the high priest of moral values to which we all should ascribe. Ultimately, I believe in God’s mercy for all of us and I do not believe that I should play God with any induvidual person’s sinfulness or flawed humanity, certainly not as a priest. I am sure that if I was to comment publicly on the many faults, sins and obvious failings of any parishioner, in life or in death, I would very quickly be put in my place and probably be removed from the parish. Privately I may express an opinion but I would not, nor is it my role or duty, to humiliate anyone. That’s my approach and it allows me to follow Jesus’s imperative of “condemning the sin but not the sinner”.

Despite what you said, your questions, all of them, were phrased in a way that suggested how YOU felt about the matter; perhaps you weren’t aware of this and had no intention, therefore, of deliberately trying to influence me. Technically, this type of question is called ‘leading’.

But this is beside the point. What matters is that a funeral Mass is about commending a soul to God’s loving care, no matter what he has done, or is alleged to have done. This is its primary function, and by this, hopefully, the bereaved may draw consolation.

Like you, I should have said nothing, at Mass, of the deceased’s past that would possibly have added to the suffering of mourners. However, this blog is a social medium, not a funeral Mass, and therefore, in my opinion, a morally legitimate place to discuss issues that it would not have been morally proper to air during such a Mass. I should make only one proviso here: that the issues be dicussed with as much sensitivity and balance as possible. You yourself noted the change in my style of commenting today. This change was deliberate and purposeful.

The veneer of rationality in your posts is just that: paper thin.

Your attempt at rationalising your disgusting approach to your comments is pathetic. There is a major difference between the speaker and the spoken about in this case which undermines your attempt to justify yourself: the subject is a named individual, you, on the other hand are hiding behind your pseudonymous mask. So you are not comparing like with like. The deceased person was streets ahead of you morally.

‘There but for the grace of God go I’.
Strangely, the last cleric to say that to me was Dom Cuthbert Brogan when he was a mere deacon, and he was referring to the Abbot of Prinknash who ended up in the papers for turning up at the bedroom of a guest to the monastery, dressed in a dressing gown, and he wasn’t thinking of lectio divina.
That connection has made me wary of this phrase since it reveals how grateful the above cleric is to God, that his own peccadillos have not been exposed in the press. Of course this is mere chance, and not the grace of God.
Actually the way to ensure your sexual activities do not appear in the press is to make sure they are ones which would not be of interest to the press, and certainly not sucking off a seminarian on an altar.
If you have things you are frightened of the press or Bishop Buckley exposing, just stop doing them or move to a state of life where they are OK. If you make out God is protecting your privilege and double life, you are scum pure and simple.

Excellent point, 7.45.

Hence, perhaps, the pious protests today from Romanist priests who’d rather what is hidden in their own, morally duplicitous lives remained hidden. They all probably think that today is a good day to lay to rest the ghosts of their pasts.

Shame on them for using a human being’s death to do so.

Shrewd observation. There might be more sympathy for Father Lomasney – though there seems to be quite a lot as it is – had he shown some compunction for his extraordinary act of sacrilege. He appears to have been supported by his then bishop who insulted parishioners further by taking no action to restore the sanctity of the altar. Lomasney joins a long line of clergy including Father Preynet in Lyon, Uncle Ted in assorted beach huts, the appalling Bishop Bransfield and so on, who demonstrate no awareness of what they have done. Sins are not expunged at the time of death, so the popular contemporary practice of using a funeral to praise and glorify the deceased’s life rather than pray for their soul is profoundly un-Catholic. Presumably this is a factor in Catholics refusing the Last Rites as all a bit too gloomy. The erstwhile Abbot of Prinknash mentioned does not hesitate to use his abbatial title when signing petitions to oppose “evils” such as contraception. Have these men no sense of irony, let alone shame? Cuthbert is also pretty hot on urging us all to adhere to the Church’s “timeless teaching” on moral matters, and sits on Portsmouth safe-guarding committee. I’ll say no more.

You speak about a practice being profoundly un-Catholic. Your post exhibits the worst type of un-Catholic morality from, I presume, a self-confessed Catholic. The example you provide of the French priest and the US ex-cardinal are connected with under-age, and therefore, illegal, matters. And you lump the deceased here with that lot. Where is your evidence for that action?

we may never know the struggles of Fr Lomasey. If indeed he was involved in the scandal, and we do not know for certain that he was, but if he was than his struggles must have been vast.
Indeed the struggle of celibacy would clearly have destroyed him. Imagine if he were allowed to love both spiritually and physically. Such obvious pend up energy could have been channelled in a constructive, fulfilling and unstruggled way.
The involvement of an Altar is sad. But it is man, not God, who places weight upon an Altar’s meaning. Jesus preached the return of the lost sheep, lost coin, prodical son… he was also angered by the abuse of the temple. We must remember that if Fr was involved in the scandal we cannot know of his subsequent reconciliation. What we know is that he who is forgiven little loves little, but he who is forgiven much loves much. There is no limit to God’s forgiveness; that is why there can never be a limit to man’s love.
RIP Fr Lomasey. You are now entrusted to God’s mercy – the one thing we must all encounter.
