AN OPEN LETTER TO IRISH JESUIT PROVINCIAL LEONARD MALONEY – WHO REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE OR REPLY TO LETTERS AND EMAILS.
Dear Leonard,
I am writing this open letter to you because you do not acknowledge private emails and Ms Fox says she checks the blog everyday.
Jesuits are renowned for being highly educated men. But education does not, automatically bring good manners with it. My father used to say: “If nature play not her part, in vain is labour. I regard your refusal to acknowledge emails, especially from alleged victims of sexual abuse, to be an example of extreme bad manners.
Saoirse Fox
In recent times you and your safeguarding person, Ms Saoirse Fox, have received 4 complaints from:
Dublin J – an ex Maynooth seminarian.
Dublin N – a young Dublin layman
Dublin P – a young Dublin layman.
Birmingham M – a recently left Jesuit novice.
All alleged complaints refer to Fr Paul Prior – currently a Jesuit Novice.
Ms Fox did confirm to Dublin J that a complaint against Prior by Birmingham M is being is being investigated currently.
Ms Fox told Dublin J that she has never heard of Dublin N or Dublin P.
But Dublin N has sent me a copy of an email he received, yesterday, from Ms Fox!
Here are emails between Dublin J, Dublin N and Ms Fox?
EMAIL FROM SAOIRSE FOX TO DUBLIN P
Various questions arise;
1. Are the Jesuits acting in good faith on these matters and abiding by best practice procedures
2. On the basis of the emails above, is Ms Fox speaking out of the two sides of her mouth or has someone hijacked Ms Fox’s email or identity?
3. Does Dublin N and Dublin P really exist or is someone engaging in mind games?
4. Dublin J believes that mind games are being played and he believes that Fr Prior could be behind them? Dublin J says he experienced Fr Prior playing mind games while in Maynooth?
5. What did Ms Fox mean when she said to Dublin J “I do not want to get involved with whatever is going on here”. What is going on here?
In any event, Leonard, these are most serious matters and in my opinion, you have the duty to issue a statement clearing up these issues.
I do not have much hope that you will do that π₯
St. Ignatius, pray for us!
Yours sincerely
+ Pat Buckley.

MOVEMENT FROM THE JESUITS
The former seminarian Joe Sheridan has, this afternoon, received a solicitors letter from the Irish Jesuits solicitor confirming that are taking all the allegations seriously and promising a thorough investigation.
194 replies on “WHAT ARE YOU THE IRISH JESUITS PLAYING AT WHEN IT COMES TO SAFEGUARDING?”
Dunno about the Irish Jesuits but there is an ever increasing number of complaints of a safeguarding nature here in Scotland about a Glasgow based Jesuit who was attached to the prestigious school, St Aloysius College.
The whole bloody place knew what was going on yet when he died a few years back my son said the church was mobbed and he had an enormous funeral
Seems his requiem was a gathering of the great and the good of alumni who are now leading lights in the professions in Scotland.
My son, a lawyer, said the deceasedβs antics were the talk of his group of his friends and seemed to be very amusing.
A visit from the priest in the changing rooms at rugby seemed to be a rite of passage.
What are the βJsβ coming to?

Pat, the Jesuits are the biggest shower of liars in God’s creation. Mental reservation and semantical gymnastics are what they are now known for instead of furthering the Gospel. It will be a great day for this country when there is not one SJ left.

Whatever way you look at it, the Jesuits certainly are moving slowly with their investigation. That’s fair enough if they are being robust and truthful. The denial by the safeguarding officer of further complaints is most alarming and does not inspire one with great confidence in either her office or capabilities. Abuse of any kind is despicable and must be investigated thoroughly without any cover up, especially from an organisation which professes to be in the service of Christ. As for the priest Prior I do not know whether he is guilty or not and he is entitled to be presumed innocent until otherwise proved. What is his current status? Has he been suspended pending the investigation given the gravity of the charges levelled against him. This would be the normal course of action. With its history of cover ups, I fear that the complainants will not have their cases adequately investigated by the RCC. Despite Ireland becoming a more secular society, there does still seem to be a reluctance (maybe divided loyalties) on behalf of the civil authorities to pursue claims against RCC clerics adequately.

Hi + Pat. I note that the pictures of the letters / emails on your blog today have been properly redacted, because when I looked last night or this morning I could easily read the redacted names beneath the black felt pen. Actually, Iβve forgotten them now. They meant nothing to me. But I guess it was wise to further black / white them out.
Prior does seem to be in some bother. I suspect that this matter is being looked at by various bishops, superiors and safeguarding people, perhaps even the police in various jurisdictions on both sides of the Irish Sea. I was interested to see that one of the complainants has a Birmingham connection, and others SJ connections. So, I guess + Bunty / Nursey Longley will have to take a view as well, if Prior is still in his jurisdiction.
I donβt know the detail, and probably never will, but there really does seem to be a great deal of questionable stuff being reported about Prior. I just wonder why these things were not being addressed before now, by Maynooth, by his bishop, by the SJs in their recruitment process. It seems strange. I bet it will be a matter of various people, perhaps quite a number of them, knowing things but just keeping quiet. Actually, that makes them complicit in matters of breaches of safeguarding. Itβs more of the business of various forms of coverup, denial, thinking itβs not my business, that the Church and clergy have relied on for centuries to ensure that significant issues are not brought to the light. Well, those days are over, and the light will shine on this stuff and people and they will have to be held accountable. Watch what is happening in the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, admittedly a completely different issue, but the same dynamics apply, namely lots of people knowing that things were wrong and did not fit and that things were dangerous, but keeping quiet, and leaving it to others to make decisions, and then when things go badly wrong spending huge amounts of capital and energy to ensure that they do not get held accountable. Well, they will be held accountable. As will the people in this present Prior case, because they knew in all likelihood and have done nothing.

Prior was protected by Connolly and Mullaney in Maynooth. He got promotion for his hatchet job in 2009, which has been already outlined on this blog.
The inevitable trajectory was set which ended in the disaster of 2016 for which, Prior, as Senior Formator, shoulders the greater proportion of blame.

There does seem something odd in Prior’s trajectory. A 50 something year old man, already a priest, moving over to the SJs to hang out in noviciate with 20 or 30 something young men, having been moved on from Rome and then Maynooth, with a track record of an inordinate and inappropriate interest / fascination with underpants, which he wasn’t shy about sharing with young seminarians, and other rather off track involvement with these young men. What was there not to see / notice when the SJs were talking to him and considering him as suitable for their noviciate ? I reckon the SJs dropped the ball there, and didn’t do proper background checking of Prior before taking him on as well as the already known problems that came wit him. I think the Irish SJs need a new vocations director with a bit more common sense and antennae !

A bottle of smoke. You are scraping the bottom of the barrel in your rush to impugn another personβs motives. A laughable and derisory interpretation for a person entering a noviceship.

Yep, and that kind of stuff should have been picked up on and acted on PDQ. I guarantee you that people will have known these things, and wondered a bit about them, but then decided – yes, decided ! – not to follow them up and find out what was really happening. It takes a seminarian to have the courage and guts to tell about them, probably at great personal cost to him given the power imbalances in this whole thing. What is as important about this whole matter – Prior’s peccadilloes and predilections are probably secondary in this matter – is that nobody thought to act on what they could see, hear and smell, but rather chose – yes, chose ! – not to do anything. That’s irresponsible, callous, careless and probably actionable because these were people with a duty of care, which they signally failed to carry out.

Re your βracistβ comment. Subtlety and nuance may not be your favourite approach.
In the Hebrew Bible there were at least two observable strands when it came to Jewish views of non-Jews which crystalized after the exile. One, as in Exra-Nehemiah took the view that the Lord was God of Jews only. The other, as in Deutero-Isaiah adopted a universalist perspective.
It would be strange if either did not figure in Jesusβ early formation.
It would be an anachronism to use the term βracismβ for the former since the concern was primarily theological and not anthropological.
It would also fall within the boundaries of poetic licence for a preacher to use the word βracistβ to enable his/her audience to connect their experience with what might otherwise be thought of as obstruse biblical facts.
I was present at the carol service. It was a well-delivered reflection. Not only that, but given that we are still discussing it in February, it was successful.

The other βfunnyβ thing is how Maynooth deal with complainants: interrogate their friends and either chuck them out or pressure them to leave; blacken the complainant with every slander under the sun.
Such is the modus operandi of Maynooth that seminarians have to resort to anonymous letters for fear of similar treatment.
Itβs a warped dynamic and was a dream environment for perverts like Prior.

This person still refuses to put his name to the letter. It must be safe to do so now? It suggests that the person has NO integrity, backbone or evidence.
There’s an old saying that if a lie is told often enough, it becomes the truth. Actually, it doesn’t. What happens is that people simply start believing that it’s true.

The letter was wrong because it specifically stated that
1. Seminarians were having sex in each others rooms – it has been refuted by the seminarian involved. The other seminarian who made the initial allegation withdrew it because, and I quote, βhe thought that something was going onβ.
2. Seminarians are on Grindr – the newspaper who broke the story, never supplied one bit of evidence that seminarians were on Grindr. It just said they were. No profiles, no screenshots, no lay people making accusations, nothing. So yes the letter was wrong!
12:57 – what you are referring to is the which hunt which followed the initial false letter. Pat decided to throw dirt at the seminarians listed until it stuck. Same old story…

@1:35 pm. I donβt think so. There is one thing about the Irish bishops, they wonβt be told what to do by anyone.
Those mentioned seminarians, deacon, and ex-priest arenβt as culpable though as Connolly, Mullaney and Prior.

Who needs evidence when you have a blog like this? When seminarians and priests attract negative attention, they (the bishops) throw them under the bus and protect themselves. Just because the named individuals are gone does not mean there is truth to the rumours. They simply became too burdensome for Bishops like Diarmuid and Eamonn Martin. They protect themselves…ALWAYS!!!

It is not proof. Only ONE Bishop (Ray Browne) had the courage to stand up Pat Buckley. Pat was disempowered in Kerry as opposed to being empowered by Diarmuid Martin in Dublin. Diarmuid allowed Pat to decide who gets ordained for his diocese and thus lost all his seminarians because of it.
Jesus wept.

Have a read of this … who is quoted and ask why! Because nothing thatβs why. I am also led to believe something is not right here. If there is something internal going on, why was the naked individual quoted in an article recently by the Jesuitβs? This blog has made reference to this before this, so why would they want to quote a person that is meant to be investigated? Mid summer murders gone to the head!

Bishop Buckley, I have raised a few serious concerns to the UK Nuncio, Edward Adams in Wimbledon. It regards Canon David Oakley, soon to be Bishop of Northampton during his time as head of Oscott College in Birmingham. My letters and then emails and then telephone calls have all been cast aside like an oily rag. This man must not be ordained a bishop. The Nuncio needs to at least make him sign something on his day of ordination because this is so serious. I’m concerned that Cardinal Nichols and Archbishop Roche in Rome are pushing for this.

My understanding is that Oakley has an interesting and colourful past, which you wouldnβt normally expect of a bishop to be. Well, so did Kieran Conry, and anybody with any sense knew about his womanising, but they ordained him. So, maybe extra-curricular activities donβt count any more in the criteria for choosing a Roman Catholic, celibate, bishop ? Iβm not so sure that the intelligence services of the Papal Nuncios and the Vatican are that impressive and exhaustive, and they often just donβt know about things. I know a prospective bishop who had fathered a child, but they didnβt know about it, until he told them about it ! There have been a few prospective bishops who have had the sense to βfess up before the hands are laid upon them, and withdraw, and save us all a lot of embarrassment. For, I assure you, if there is dirt about, and you put your head above the parapet by becoming a bishop, you will certainly get a face full of crap and be in very choppy waters.
