THE IRISH JESUITS – A CRITIQUE.

twitter_icon_01_400x400

YESTERDAY I RECEIVED THIS CTITIQUE OF THE IRISH JESUITS.

“Dear Pat,You have walked into a minefield with your focus on the Jesuits. The Irish Province of Jesuits are a group of bachelors who lead a charmed life. They get off on commentating on everyone else’s life while living in comfort in one of their “Ashford Castle” type communities or getting “permission” to live on their own and do their own thing. They overstate their importance and involvement in issues whether its ecumenism, academics, social justice, pretending to be deep and thoughtful and nuanced about issues, when really they are institutional men who will back the status quo to the end and dont have an original thought between them. They insist on passing comments on everyone else and yet never allow the light to be shone on them.

Peter McVerry gets great kudos for his work, much of it deserved. However, there is a darker side to it all too. He gets to live on his own in a lovely apartment as no one would be able to put up with him. There are also serious issues with him not letting go the reins of the Peter McVerry Trust even though the company has a full complement of staff including a CEO. He continues to control the Trust rather than allowing it to develop and grow without the need to have him front and centre.

Kevin O’Higgins SJ spends most of his time on Twitter passing comments and judgements on Irish society after spending years on the missions (so what, it suited him). He presents himself as a “wise old man” type with great wisdom and insight. Yet it’s clear to see that he actually has a lot of time on his hands and a great set up – living on his own, nice sun patio, dog and no one to bother him. So, no wonder he has all the time in the world to pontificate but please, give the rest of us a break as we struggle to make ends meet and get through the day.

The Jesuits canvass a certain type of lay person.

Regarding their Safeguarding Officer, Saoirse Fox she has generated a nice little industry for herself out of safeguarding. While having a mediocre professional work record, not going anywhere, she landed a plum job with the Jesuits. She is one of these “woke” types ‘ into climate change, social justice, lgbt, craft beer, music festivals, but really when it comes down to it she, along with her Jesuit colleagues, have a rigid world view dressed up as “woke” She is very blinkered in her approach and has no understanding of the pastoral care of the perpetrator.

Then the Jesuits have Pat Coyle, journalist, who is almost like Twink for RTE. The Jesuits see Pat Coyle as their Lord and Saviour as she presents them in a modern and “woke” way through media. She manages their image very carefully.

However, the Jesuit Sli Eile Ministry for young people (based on Gardiner Street Dublin) fell out of favour when it became too independent thinking. So, it was sidelined and eventually closed down.

The Jesuits breed a new generation of people who think and act their way through their Spiritual Direction programme in Manresa. It attracts a certain type again but that’s another days work. The Manresa Community also have a fine view of the gay cruising area on Dollymount Strand.

Provincial Leonard Maloney SJ was the last Jesuit headmaster of Belvedere College in Dublin. He will not only be remembered for that but also remembered for the student he disciplined who then killed himself as a result.

The Jesuits had no choice but to hand over Belvedere (2003) to a hay head master. But the Jesuits hold on to the bitter end before they hand over the reins even though its 2020 and there are plenty competent lay people to do those jobs – the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice is another example.

And Pat, there is plenty to say about the Jesuits in Ireland, not very flattering though. And yes, plenty of abuse cases in there too. However, the Jesuits are probably a few steps ahead of you in anticipating and facing off media attention before it gets too hot.it will be interesting to see how far you get with your current enquiries.

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam”.

PAT SAYS

This was a very unexpected communication.

It is interesting.

I’ve never had much to do with the Jesuits before – apart from a few retreats earlier in life.

The Father Prior thing brought me to them this time.I am watching what they will do.

Why would any religious, with a vow of poverty, live in a private apartment instead of living in community?

A Jesuit friend of mine used to always recite the following verse about the J’s

“They join the order without knowing each other.

They live together without loving each other.

They die together without mourning each other”.

What do readers think of the critique above?

Peter McVerry could move into one of the SJ communities and give up his apartment for a homeless family. Or will I be told that it’s a stupid suggestion to make?

Like

it’s a one bed flat; you wouldn’t swing a cat in it. I doubt it would be suitable for a ‘family’. have you any spare rooms yourself? maybe even a spare space in your house? perhaps you could take in a family or a single person, maybe even an immigrant?

Like

Rita, the SJs have tons of space in their communities, even small one-bedroom flats are out of reach for most people in Dublin. Fr McVarry could live with his confreres and give up the flat to a single person or couple in need.

Like

5:01, I’m sure you have lots of friends and family with spare rooms. Perhaps you could move in with them and let a homeless family/Person have your house.

Sounds as though it comes from a serial gossip who is trying to settle a few scores.
Probably not worth the toilet paper it’s printed on.
Well, that’s the appropriate place for s***e, isn’t it?😕

Like

10.31: Much, therefore Magna, like the s***e you roll out! Strange, isn’t it, how you have an oounion on all things but twisted and thwarted. You must have an abundance of loo rolls! However, I agree with you on this piece today: a serial gossip try to settle a few scores. Also – this person is lying. Most definitely.

Hi Pat.
The Jesuits are a society not a religious community. They make promises not vows.
I have visited +Peter’s apartment. He shares it with homeless addicts. It is not plush and has little to no comfort. When ‘off duty’ from the trust he spends his down time helping people off drugs. It’s a hard, thankless life but if can help a person he will.
I rather think your blog today is based on somebody trying to throw your blog off it’s credibility. It’s like the time you wrongly blogged about that muppet Tom Deenihan leaving the priesthood. If only he would.

Like

Father Buckley, can I make a suggestion. I think you should offer day-retreats for individuals or groups in Larne. I would love to visit the oratory sometime and perhaps attendees could make a donation. I would say £50-£60 for the day, and maybe even include a light lunch and a nice cup of tea.

I know lots of Priests, Anglican and other, who are in loving relationships. Their ministry is both fruitful and happy.

Like

Pat, I know there are SJ’s who choose to live a similar lifestyle to the people they work for and advocate for, Peter McVerry being the poster boy for this. I find Peter to be sincere, committed and dedicated to the people he work with. He chooses to live simply alongside them. Other Jesuits try to do similar in helping Peter. The criticism of community living can be said of most religious communities. It’s tough, demanding of patience and mercy and kindness. Undoubtedly there will be conflicts but at least they have structured prayer, meal times and some social time. I’ve been to Manresa Retreat Centre many times and find it to be a wonderfully, quiet, enriching experience. I always got very goid spiritual directors. Thank God.

Like

Pat what do you think about the election? Who do you think will win? In fairness, the Jesuits do comment on society and age McVerry is listened to. The diocesan bishops are ignored.

Like

I am not Irish, but I heard last year they had lost many seats in the council elections.

We can critique all kinds of groups in the Church and we’ll find a dysfunction of some kind. That’s only natural. Families likewise can have hidden dysfunctionality which can break people apart. I once lived in a community for 3 years and found it very challenging but it was a positive experience overall. The Jesuuts have contributed hugely to irish society through their schools, parishes, social justice outreach and spirituality programmes. They are not a perfect group and we must remember that many of their members are of an elderly age group. Yet, they continue to offer worthwhile service to the Church. I certainly have benefited from their retreats and spiritual programmes.

Get back from your net curtains you nosey fool. Maybe someone should keep an eye on you but you sound a boring gossipy fart so probably not much worth reporting

“The Manresa Community also have a fine view of the gay cruising area on Dollymount Strand.”
That will be very handy for them right on their doorstep.

Like

I have never been to Dublin, Bp Pat, but one reviewer describes: “the dunes at Dollymount beach is just about the best cruise spot around. Just walk down to the beach over the wooden bridge and head straight to the dunes. They are located just back from the beach and there are usually some guys hanging out looking for sex. Dogging is also popular.”

Like

I’d say the critique is pretty spot on ! And probably applicable to so many religious orders, particularly of men. My own experience of male community life left a lot to be desired. Of course, for many years, I blamed myself and thought it was all my fault that it didn’t work out, and that I must have been the reason it did not work for me. Well, over the years, and with reflection, and knowing more about the dynamics of communities and in particular about the lifestyle of clergy and religious, I think that the model itself leaves a lot to be desired and can often be a refuge for strange individuals and dysfunctional lives. My experience, even though I probably couldn’t have verbalised it at the time, was one of bullying, hierarchy, strange behaviours, and usually things devolving down to the lowest common denominator such that even the basic standards of living left a lot to be desired. People seemed happiest when they had adequate supplies of drink and cigarettes, although they wouldn’t have had a clue about how much they cost or where the money came from the buy them. Often, drink was the spark for displays of aggression and anger. Many of these men were deeply unhappy and lacked integration in their emotions, relationships, and sexuality. And so, after a few drinks they would lash out in frustration. For the most part the communities managed to muddle along, at least to an outside view, providing the services and ministries which they offered, but only just. In the end, I got fed up of having to deal with unpredictable behaviours, often threatening, bullying and aggressive, as well as living in shit with unkempt and untidy men. Some individuals were fine, even good, but they tended to keep to themselves and plough their own furrow as a way of protecting themselves. My strategy was to get out and do other things. It is no wonder, that in spite of their original charisms, many of these religious orders are dying out, unable to recruit young men who are a bit more savvy than I was at that age and able to see the dysfunction for what it is. The strategy of some orders is to turn to the third world and import new members, but this brings big problems of culture, language, and above all a rigidity, ultra orthodoxy, conservatism and authoritarianism. Not a recipe for success. Some orders have seen the writing on the wall and have accepted that their time has come to die out and let something else fill the space. That seems wise to me, and I congratulate them for being realistic and going gracefully rather than trying to sustain something that has outlived it usefulness, and in reality can be quite dangerous. That kind of religious life has had its day.

Very interesting. I imagine something like this happened at the Birmingham Oratory when it went into meltdown before BXVI’s visit to the UK.

The Jesuits, the Reds, the Glenstal OSBs etc and the unveiled nuns are renewing themselves out of existence. Their members are old as tea, the Irish SJs have just one novice (Paul Prior, LOL) and in twenty years time there won’t be a convent still open in Ireland. Good old Vatican II.

Like

It’s easy and lazy thinking to blame this on Vatican II you clown. A lot of it was never fully implemented. The sad old lace queens and their fiddlebacks etc always were so critical of it.

Like

The Sisters of Mercy in Enniskillen (average age: 90, number of novices: 0) always maintained that the nuns were the only people to “fully implement Vatican II”. Look where that got them. 🤣😂🤣😅😆🤩😘🤗💯

Like

At a time when there are 20,000 people on the NI homeless register, why do the Enniskillen Sisters of Mercy have several private houses, all expensive and in the nice parts of town so that nuns can live by themselves or in couples and the Convent has about 5 nuns living in it, with many empty rooms?

Check out the “religious communities” section of this:

Mind your own business at 10:24.
Is it because they are women or sisters that you assume to dictate their living conditions?
If the boot were on the other foot there would be outrage.
Disgusting that because religion is so denigrated today that busy bodies like you can jump on the bandwagon.
What have you contributed to deserving causes in Enniskillen?
Really obscene!

Like

It’s more obscene to have a convent nearly empty and the nuns buying and furnishing loads of £150-200k houses and waterside apartments to live in. Do they not believe in living in religious community, sharing all things in common? They priced families out of buying those houses. As well as Enniskillen their big family houses portfolio extends to Lisnaskea, Irvinestown and the Graan farmhouse.

Like

What’s being women got to do with it? The original blog was about SJs living outside their communities and there was a focus on McVerry. Are the nuns off-limit?

Like

On the subject of Enniskillen, the presbytery at 4-6 Darling St has five self-contained flats, each with its own sitting room, fully-equipped kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. One curate lives there.
Across from it, at 1 Darling Street, lives the PP in a huge five bedroom house, the assistant priest lives in a big house in Tattygar and the retired PP has his own house in Maguiresbridge. So a big 🆓🏡 each.

It amazes me that you suddenly get obsessed with certain people, issues or orders. Then you make it your goal to blog about that issue until you get some satisfactory result.
You won’t get anywhere with the Prior issue or the jesuits. They can withstand your mud throwing antics.

Like

I do not suddenly get obsessed with issues. Someone brings an issue to me and I look at it. I am not throwing mud. There are very serious issues with Paul Prior and he has a long history. Just watch. This story is going to break big time and bring down many.

He is now causing mayhem with the Jesuits.

Many bishops were warned about Prior and chose to do nothing.

Not confronting a problem doesn’t make it go away. It only makes it worse.

Like

My question is – why did the SJs not know about all this before they took him on ? Somebody didn’t do their homework. It was known all along. I think it had been even mentioned on this blog before he went to the SJs. I’d be asking questions about the quality and nature of the SJ recruitment and vetting process. I thought they were to Storm Troopers of the Catholic Church !

He did not harm a fly. He is a good man. Don’t believe the midget jockey he is mentally unstable.

Like

12:08, the “midget jockey” had the courage to print his GDPR documents here, which showed no evidence of mental instability. In actual fact they revealed that this former seminarian was doing very well spiritually, humanly, pastorally and academically.

The current controversy with Prior is over a contemporary complaint made by a former Jesuit novice as confirmed by their Safeguarding Officer.

10.24: An utterly innocuous comment. You might like to research the various outreach programmes sponsored and paid for by the Sisters of Mercy: you might also discover that sisters are involved in various parish ministries, prison and hospital chaplaincies, women’s education programmes, outreach to the poor….Oh if only you’d open your bloody eyes!! And stop the begrudgery of these good sisters who have worked hard all their lives and long after their retirement from nursing and teaching, continue to serve faithfully well into late years of their lives. You could follow their example, you fool.

Like

They could do all that, live in the convent (there’s plenty of room there) and sell the family homes to those who truly need them. Why do they need detached family houses?

Like

Some seminarian needs to launch a formal complaint with the Gardai and in the context of a criminal and civil trial Fintan and many other Irish bishops need to be subpoenaed

+ Pat, are you suggesting that there is something criminal / actionable in the behaviour of Prior and his dealings with vulnerable people or seminarians for whom he had a duty of care ? Or, is it just he was unsuitable to be in that position, but actually didn’t do anything that could be considered criminal / actionable ? If the former, then he could be in some serious deep water.

As for finding that eel, Byrne, ‘interesting’, well, what can I say, except that… there is no fool like…?

The only interesting feature about Byrne is his self-interest, specifically, his self-absorption. There probably isn’t a plate-glass window nor door, nor mirror, that he passes without taking a self-adulating peek at himself. The man is wholly unsuited to work with people in ANY capacity, because other people will never be his ultimate concern.

But then, you are dazzled by his ‘manly’ fine features, aren’t you Tom G, to see anything else?

Well, I suppose we all have to find some way of getting through these stormy winter nights, even if it is by soaringly silly flights of fancy.

The crap has hit the fan in Liverpool and it is now ALL OUT! The I.C.O. Investigated the Archdiocese of Liverpool Safeguarding Department; the results of that independent investigation are a total car crash (as one would imagine…)
The Safeguarding Department still, actively and constantly, failed to take Safeguarding action, even after the Liverpool Commission raised serious concerns and gave stark advice. This was in relation to the Seminarian who was abused.
The Commission found the Liverpool Safeguarding Dept., to have been ‘’Negligent during the Independent review,’’ and advised, ‘The Liverpool Catholic Safeguarding Department needs to work within its scope and responsibilities.’’
They accused the Archdiocesan Independent report into the vulnerable seminarian’s accusations and grave concerns as being ‘Biased,’ ‘Subjective, rather than objective,’ and found that the Archdiocese of Liverpool SafeGuarding Department ‘’Failed to investigate the Vulnerable adult’s reports of abuse adequately.’’
JUST FOR CLARIFICATION…….
The minutes of the Liverpool Safeguarding Commission – which were previously withheld – are now in the hands of the authorities (among others).
PLEASE NOTE… That the Her Majesty’s I.C.O. is a government body; therefore, their report is a matter of PUBLIC RECORD.
The minutes of the Liverpool Safeguarding Commission are also a matter of Public record.
Walking a ‘fine line’ and ‘breaking the law’ are two different legal entities…
TAX EVASION And TAX AVOIDANCE Are NOT the SAME 😇
And the St Luke’s Centre, Manchester, is intrinsically entangled with this carnage. A travelling St Lukes assessor, who is also a priest 🧐, actively and fragrantly failed to act in protecting a Vulnerable seminarian, and others. The Vulnerable adult nearly died because of this sociopath.
The St Lukes Centre website has been down for sometime.
Apparently, Liverpool has its very own Rain Man.

I have no regard for the Romanist calendar of saints, especially since among them are paedophile protectors and ennablers, like JPII.

Not another scandal there. I remember the so-called “intense friendship” scandal involving the Provost at the time. The old queen Damian Thompson was scandalized at the time.

Has the reliquary been taken as well? Because that would be the natural target for a thief.
Otherwise it presents a bizarre picture of a Catholic so desperate to get a first class relic they steal it!

Well, of course.😕 Why would a thief steal a piece of utterly useless Roman Catholic bone? I suspect even modern thieves are intellectually too sophisticated for Romanist necrophilic garbage.
Mind, the poor oul dog is gonna be dissppointed: What’s the point of gnawing on bone devoid of marrow?
Newman, you old queer, you have been found wanting, in death as much as in life.

Foot fetishism has been defined as a pronounced sexual interest in feet. For a foot fetishist, points of attraction may include the shape and size of feet and toes (e.g. long toes, short toes, painted toenails, short or long toenail beds, high arches, soles, etc.), jewelry (e.g. toe rings, anklets, etc.), treatments (such as massaging, * * WASHING PEOPLE’S FEET * * or painting their toenails), state of dress (barefoot, FLIP-FLOPS, sandals, high heels, HOSIERY, SOCKED FEET, etc.), Including rubbing the foot, tickling, smelling, kissing, biting, licking, sucking toes, rubbing genitals on foot, etc.).
Sigmund Freud also considered foot binding as a form of fetishism.
………. Why put such an immature, volatile and compromising individual in such a precarious position? One must certainly ask this question, given the issues with the last PP!

If that is who I think it is he washed the kids feet during our Easter liturgy and made a joke in the staff room about kissing their feet next year. And I think I know know who the trainee is, he was a young man who built up a good bond with reception the class, which consisted of children with Autism. He just vanished into thin air one day and we never saw him again nothing was mentioned in school or church newsletters

McGreevy has worked on three productions since leaving Loreto in Manchester – all 3 featuring Schofield. Did he use his influence within ITV to get young Matthew these positions? Young McGreevy’s present day position is on ‘This Morning’ where Schofield chose to come out on Friday. It looks more outed than coming out. Hypocrite looking sympathy. Pathetic twink chaser.

Pat, not many know that the Saw Doctors wrote a song about Fanny back in the day when she was a young wan running around Thurles

I have fallen for another she can make her own way home
And even if she asked me now I’d let her go alone
I useta see her up the chapel when she went to Sunday mass
And when she’d go to receive, I’d kneel down there
And watch her pass
The glory of her ass
I useta to love her, I useta love her once
A long, long time ago
I useta to love her, I useta love her once
A long long time ago
It’s gone , all my lovin? is gone
It’s gone , all my lovin? is gone
D’you remember her collecting for concern on Christmas eve
She was on a forty eight hour fast just water and black tea
I walked right up and made an ostentatious
Contribution
And I winked at her to tell her I’d seduce her in the future
When she’s feelin looser
So now you know the truth of it she’s no longer my obsession
Though the thoughts and dreams i had of her would take six months in confession
See i met this young one Thursday night and she’s inta free expression
And her mission is to rid the world of this sinful repression
Then we had a session
It’s gone , long , long gone
I have fallen for another and she can make her own way home

Pat, it is as plain as day from your blog that the entire Irish episcopal conference and the president and staff of (Gay)Maynooth are a complete and utter laughing stock. The fact that they do absolutely nothing to counteract this perception suggests they are in meltdown.

+Pat, I have to admit disgust at the speculation you have permitted on this blog today. As a former seminarian who knew these people, I can say that these allegations are ludicrous and baseless. Allowing these young men, who are both getting on with their lives, to be named is nothing short of irresponsible.
