FIRST POLISH BISHOP ACCUSED OF SEX ABUSE

Bishop accused of sex abuse test case for Church in Poland

Paulina Guzik Feb 14, 2020 Crux

The first accusation of sexual abuse against a Polish bishop will serve as a testing ground for the Church’s new commitment to fighting sexual abuse, and how it manifests itself both locally and at the Vatican. For decades, Bishop Jan Szkodoń was a significant figure in Krakow, the archdiocese of St. John Paul II and the spiritual center of Poland. From 1979, he was the spiritual director of the seminary for over a decade, until he was consecrated bishop in 1988. He was known for his deep spirituality and artistic sophistication – he even painted and wrote poetry. The only complaint one would hear about him was about the length of his homilies: Most faithful could barely keep their eyes open. But overall, in church circles and among the faithful, he was one of the “good guys.”Unexpectedly, on Feb. 10, a year before his retirement, a young civil servant and mother accused him of abusing her in 1998, when she was a 15-year-old girl. In an article published by the daily newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza’s investigative unit, Monika (not her real name) claims she was often a guest at the bishop’s apartment, and “Whether summer or winter, he always felt hot” – she recalled. “He took off his cassock and his shirt, remained in tank top and trousers, and unzipped trousers halfway.”Then, said Monika, Szkodoń encouraged her to undress, touched her breasts, thighs and bit her ears. “Monika, God has sent you to me. He wants to teach me tenderness through you,” he allegedly told the girl. The day before the Polish paper published its report, Szkodoń released a statement declaring his innocence: “These accusations violate my good name, which I intend to defend.”
If the bishop is found guilty by the Vatican, he could be the first Polish bishop not only to be removed from office, but also expelled from the priesthood.Mixed reactionsMonika never told her family about the allegations; her parents were proud that such an important church figure dedicated time to their daughter, not suspecting there was anything more to her visits to his apartment than pastoral care. Now that she has made the story public, the family is as shocked as the rest of the city. The archbishop of Krakow, Marek Jędraszewski, did not release an official statement. His spokesperson informed the media that Szkodoń left the archdiocese for an undisclosed location and that “the archdiocese was not aware of the accusations that the bishop is facing.”However, his predecessor as archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, did not keep silent. In a statement released a day after the accusations, the longtime personal secretary of John Paul II said that “the allegations hurt many people for whom Bishop Jan is an authority, a father and a friend. We are all expecting the allegations to be thoroughly and quickly explained.”
Archbishop Wojciech Polak, Primate of Poland and Delegate for Child Protection of the Polish Bishops’ Conference took a different approach.“Any information of that kind brings pain to the Church,” he said at a press conference on the pastoral healing needed for church sex abuse survivors. “It is a call that we shall always care about – the safe environment for children in the Church. And it is a call for each and every one in the Church.”“The case is shocking and saddening,” Father Piotr Studnicki, head of the Child Protection Office of the Polish Episcopal Conference, told Crux.He said the Wyborcza report is “painful reading,” adding, “we are awaiting the results of the investigation with patience and care.”The Vatican ambassador’s roleMonika didn’t use the diocesan path of investigation. In May 2019, she reported the case directly to the Vatican embassy, called the Apostolic Nunciature (she also reported to the state prosecutors in August, public officials started an investigation, but they had to close it because of the statute of limitations).
“The first letter in this matter arrived at the Nunciature on May 27, 2019 and was forwarded to the Holy See the same day,” the embassy said in a Feb. 12 statement.Nevertheless, it took eight months for church investigators to listen to the alleged victim: Monika was asked to testify only in January 2020.
During that time, Szkodoń was performing his duties as an auxiliary bishop of Krakow. On the day of her deposition, on January 23, 2020, the papal nuncio to Poland, Italian Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, met with Monika personally. However, some have complained about the timeline of events.“After all the papal declarations saying that the concern for victims is a priority for the Church, the real pace of dealing with those matters at the Vatican congregation is nothing but obstructive,” wrote Zbigniew Nosowski, chief editor of Wieź quarterly and one of the founders of a helpline for survivors of sexual abuse. Many in Poland see the woman going to the media as a desperate move. She had been waiting for so long without any information from the Vatican or the Nunciature that she decided to go public with the case.“Communications – meaning informing the reporting person what is the state of the matter – is a crucial thing for those who report cases of sexual abuse in the Church” – Studnicki told Crux.“We owe it to the survivors – they need to know whether anyone is already working on their case,” the priest added, suggesting that a simple note on what is currently happening to the case may help a lot.2019 was a year of reckoning on clerical sexual abuse for Poland, after the documentary “Tell No One” recounted the extent of the problem in the Church.
An earlier version of this article said Monika was asked to testify in December 2019. It was January 2020. It also misidentified the date of the apostolic nuncio’s meeting with Monika. We apologize for the error.

PAT SAYS

The prosecution of an RCC Polish bishop is a BIG development.

It needed to happen.

We need an Irish bishop in the same position.

When bishops appear in handcuffs on the way to court the RCC sexual abuse crisis will have turned a corner.

I agree, Bishop Pat.
Why some Irish Bishops didn’t appear in court to answer for covering up is incredible.

Incredible? On the face of it, yes. But on longer view, it really shouldn’t surprise anyone. Despite all that has happened and is known to the public and the judiciary, there is still deference for these men. THAT is the incredible thing.
Watch the video above: this very point is made about the refusal of Canadian police to go after these epscopal parasites. The commentor compares this with police reaction to street drug dealers: the police go higher up the chain of command to arrest the Mr Bigs of drug dealing. But they won’t go after the Mr Bigs of Romanist paedophilia, the bishops. The contrast in police MOs is shocking.

Are people utterly thick?
‘Monika’ ‘s parents were proud that an important Church figure, a bishop no less, was paying their daughter such attention. A middle-aged man regularly received ‘Monika’ in his apartment, and her parents thought nothing of it. The mind boggles; it really does.
Had this man not been a bishop, but, say, a roadsweeper and bachelor, would the parents have thought the same? Like hell!
This brings us to a central feature of (and the problem with) Romanist priesthood: it is not built on servanthood, but on social status, on privilege, and on hierarchy. It is morally rotten through and through. And it dazzled that young girls parents with a social snobbery that blinded them to the danger their daughter might have been in, a danger that would probably have been obvious to them had the bishop been that roadsweeper.
I don’t know if this man is guilty, and I must presume him innocent, in the interest of justice, until he is proven otherwise. However, his allowing a 15-year-old-girl unrelated to him to visit regularly in his apartment is a very, very poor and creepy start for this utter, episcopal fool.

——— The Foolish Donkey ———
A salt seller used to carry the salt bag on his donkey to the market every day. On the way they had to cross a stream. One day the donkey suddenly tumbled down the stream and the salt bag also fell into the water. The salt dissolved in the water and hence the bag became very light to carry. The donkey was happy!
Then the donkey started to play the same trick every time. It became a common occurrence, all round!
The salt seller came to understand the trick and decided to teach the old donkey a lesson on the impotence of sincerity. The next day he loaded a cotton bag on the donkey.
Again it played the same trick hoping that the bag — this time containing cotton — would still become lighter.
But the dampened cotton became very heavy to carry and the donkey suffered. It learnt a lesson. It didn’t play the trick anymore — certainly not with the salt seller, anyway!

Yes, only the tip of the iceberg. Most of the Polish scandals will be about teenage boys and young men. Same as everywhere else. This is to be expected.
Cue cowardly keyboard warriors, like “Magna Carta”, to spew the usual poison and hate.
Good seed of the Kingdom and bad seed of “the Enemy” lie sown, side by side, in the Church. They grow along side each other until the Harvest. Then all the evil will be uprooted and the good will be preserved to eternal life.
The nasty keyboard cowards, like “Magna Carta” and its fellow trolls, will find themselves tied up, in the same bundle, for the same fire, as all the other enemies of The Good.

I should have spotted this bias in your post first time round. Out of the four paragraphs comprising it, only one, the first, concerns the fact that a serious sexual allegation was made against a Polish bishop. Once you had got this perfunctorily out of the way, you started on me.

Appearances are everything to you parasites, aren’t they? You are obviously a Romanist priest, because you really aren’t all that bothered by what a Polish bishop may have inflicted on a 15-year-old girl, but you are bothered by me; hence the three paragraphs devoted to me. Good to know that your priorities are in order. Well, I’m happy I bother you, priest, and if the Law allowed, I’d bother you, and your leeching kind, a lot more than your narrow mind can conceive.

If at the Eschaton I have to line up with people like you (people who have betrayed Christ, and his church), I’ll cheerfully go in the opposite direction. For if residency in Heaven means sharing it with people like you, and your kind, I ‘d much rather be elsewhere.

Bless me, ‘Father’, for I have sinned. And I intend to go on ‘sinning’ if that is what is meant by calling out and showing up a band of moral brigands in Romanist collars.😆

Not the first Polish bishop to have been accused: Juliusz Paetz was forced to resign as Archbishop of Poznan in 2002 on the more familiar grounds of inappropriate behaviour with seminarians. Like MacCarrick he remained shameless to the end until he dropped dead last year: turning up at various functions, continuing to ordain and so on. I daresay we are going to hear a lot more of this stuff coming out of Poland, as the lid is slowly lifted. Meanwhile the Polish Church continues to set itself up as the guardian of morality: I should coco!

We need an Irish bishop in cuffs hi Why? If he allegedly did the crime ok. But to put a bishop in the dock to prove a point is missing the mark by a long shot. It’s almost like the inquisition all over again . Tabloid justice has its down side hi

With respect to Pat perhaps the way forward is to abolish the Order of Bishop and give authority to each local church . Then as a community call down the Holy Spirit on any minister they want ordained .

Many people will have known about this bishop and his doings. These things are generally suspected, or actually known, by those around them. But they do nothing about it, give benefit of the doubt, are afraid, or bullied in to keeping quite. No quite the same, I know, but Kieran Conry will have been known as a womaniser who was regularly breaking his publicly professed promise of celibacy throughout most of his priestly life, even before he became a bishop. This will have been known (by the present crew of bishops) at the time, and most certainly by CMOC, his supporter, but still he was made a bishop. It suited them to keep quiet.

McCarrick’s former secretary is breaking the silence to denounce his former boss and, one supposes, patron:

All very commendable, yet I have to ask how much manipulation is going on here, and what else was the Monsignor aware of? He seems to have done quite nicely for himself – quite good looking in his day, which would have been one of the prerequisites for the job – then moving on into the service of Gregory, Cardinal Baum, another entitled American prelate, who eschewed Archbishop’s House on his visits to London in favour of Claridges. I wonder where his assistant stayed – the local Travelodge, do you think?

Oh, and he’s into celebrating the Tridentine Mass – make of that what you will. Also a friend of Mother’s, I wonder?

An impressive display of hand-wringing and disquiet by the, er, principled mons. Well, it might be if he had protested during his time as McCarrick’s secretary. Instead, there appears to have been no protest at all by him. Worse, he continued to serve a man whom he describes as a ‘devourer of souls’. How principled was that? Supping with the devil while knowing it is the devil.

In a nutshell, the good mons makes me sick, like all Romanist, self-serving, self-protecting parasites.

Correction to my post @1200: the high-living Cardinal I referred to, and himself a former Archbishop of Washington, was William, Cardinal Baum. Gregory Baum is a theologian, who, as far as I know, has never stayed at Claridges – at least not on a generous expense account funded by the usual suckers.

Why so many Polish clerics in England I wonder? I know a few who were chucked out for activities with young men. One is currently selling cheap cigarettes in his parish and makes many trips to Poland in his car via the channel tunnel. They all stick together in a clique and polish parishioners get top priority above the natives. Very many concerns regarding wjy polish clerics are quick to flee Poland for other countries.

Some years ago in a English parish the Polish PP was caught selling second hand cars from his Church car park. Hiring priests from abroad is not always a good option. I watched the video above. Same old story: Romanist priest-parasite serially abuses children sexually while his bishops serially move him around to avoid scandal.
But look out for the lawyer, Rob Tallach, who is representing 20 of the child victims of the Romanist priest-parasite: he is known as Canada’s ‘priest hunter’. I should literally give gold to be credited with such a holy title.

If the whole truth be told, I quite fancy myself as a latterday Matthew Hopkins, self-styled ‘Witchfinder General’ during the English Civil War; er, the one in the 17th century. Yes, that one.

Hopkins hunted down witches. Well, no; they weren’t witches, really; just poor unfortunate women.

But the Romanists I’d hunt down would be real enough.

A huge mistake and a disaster waiting to happen. Nice man , nice as a parish priest terrible as rector of a seminary so many things could be said that are down to his lack of oversight.
