MC ALEESE CHALLENGES THE VATICAN ABOUT VANIER.

Cloud’ hangs over Vatican regarding Vanier

by Sarah Mac Donald The Tablet

Former president of Ireland, Professor Mary McAleese, has written to Pope Francis about Jean Vanier saying the recent findings of L’Arche’s investigation, which revealed him as “a spiritual and sexual abuser”, implicates the Vatican “in a way that demands explanation”.

In her letter, addressed to the Holy Father, she warns Pope Francis that a cloud of doubt hangs over the role of the Holy See in relation to its handling of the case of Vanier and his mentor Fr Thomas Philippe.

“I urge you to ensure it is dealt with as openly, courageously and honestly as L’Arche dealt with the investigation into its founder. L’Arche will learn from this but will the Holy See?”

In her letter, Dr McAleese, who is Chancellor of Trinity College Dublin wrote: “It is essential that the Holy See now explains how it came to so publicly commend a man whose predatory proclivities it was aware of. What steps if any did the Holy See take to interrupt the growth of the powerful cult of Vanier by warning the many good men and women who trusted him in good faith that he had an alarming past?”

Acknowledging that she personally was one of those who regarded Vanier as inspirational for decades, she said learning of his sexually and spiritually abusive conduct was “devastating”.
“Even worse was learning that the Holy See had been aware since the 1950s of his malevolent proclivities and those of his colleague Pere Thomas Phillippe.”
Stating her belief that L’Arche will recover and continue its “great work” thanks to “its own integrity which is more than capable of transcending the Vanier betrayal”, she continues: “I am not so sure about whether trust in the Holy See will recover so easily.”

Referring to the failures at papal, episcopal and Curial level regarding the protection of vulnerable children and the vindication of victims, Professor McAleese tells Pope Francis: “If however it transpires that the Holy See failed to act to protect members of the L’Arche community by alerting them to the known predatory activities of Vanier and Philippe I have to say that this will be my final line of least resistance.”

Mary McAleese, one of Ireland’s most publicly committed Catholics, adds: “I could not in conscience continue to support an institution capable of such gross negligence.”

She asks the Pope in her letter to clarify the Vatican’s role or roles in “this appalling affair” and says the Holy See needs to set out clearly its relationship since the 1950s with Vanier and Philippe and the organisations they set up.
“Now that both Philippe and Vanier have been unmasked the spotlight moves to the Holy See. What did it know and when and what did it do to prevent Vanier and Philippe living their grand lie? What did it do or not do which allowed Vanier to grow into the uncontested legend of folk saint and icon, a reputation which must have made it so very difficult for victims to come forward?”

Reminding Pope Francis that he himself publicly praised Vanier and spoke to him and of him in glowing terms just before his death, she notes that this was “at a time when the Philippe story was known and it was also known that Vanier was at the very least aware of Philippe’s predatory history”.

In December 2014, Mary McAleese wrote a piece on Jean Vanier for The Tablet to mark its 175th anniversary. It was part of a series in which 50 Catholics chose the person from the last 175 years whose life has been a personal inspiration to them and an example of their faith at its best.
The former Irish head of state wrote: “I can think of no better exemplar of the Catholic faith, lived and witnessed in joy, than Jean Vanier. He is 86 now and still teaching us to look to the fragile if we want to know our own strength, to the overlooked if we want to experience love.”

Jean Vanier founded L’Arche in 1964 to assist people with intellectual disabilities. It caters for 10,000 people in 39 countries.
L’ Arche International announced on 22 February that an inquiry carried out by GCPS, an independent UK consultancy, which specialises in improving procedures for the prevention and reporting of abuse, received “credible and consistent testimonies from six adult women without disabilities, covering the period from 1970 to 2005”.
The women each reported that Jean Vanier initiated sexual relations with them, usually in the context of spiritual accompaniment.

Jean Vanier died in May 2019 aged 90.

PAT SAYS

I come from a personal place of not liking McAleese because for a long time she was a HOLY WATER HEN licking the asses of the Irish bishops.

I would have regarded her as an intimate part of the Irish Roman Catholic establishment – and greatly disliked her for that.

I remembered being told by Cahal Daly’s “valet” of how she rang Daly on his 90th birthday and was all over him like a rash. Ugh!

But now she seems to have changed her tune? She is now posing as a radical Catholic.

Has this change come about as a result of her son coming out as a “disordered” gay?

What she is saying to Francis about Vanier is right and good.

But how come the change?

Can readers advise?

WHAT IS THAT LOOK ON MARTIN O’HAGANS FACE ALL ABOUT?

He looks as if meeting Bonnie Prince Charlie makes his want to burst into tears?

Pat, why are you giving that turncoat McAleese such undeserved attention? We all have questions about Vanier, sadly and care hugely disappointed and feel betrayed. McAleese until she finished her 2nd term as President, almost to the last day, kissed every Episcopal ring she could find and wined and dined at many a parish gathering She knew for years that her sin was gay and knew of others too but chose to keep her mouth shut. She could be a catalyst for real change in the Church but her passive aggressive approach is very off putting. She is becoming tiresome and since I do not know if she is an active member of her parish community (or ever was), thus trying to make a meaningful contribution, I hold little respect for her. Her disregard in dismissive and mocking tones of Pope Francis and others does not endear her to many, even to feminist theologians or to progressive, liberal Catholics.

Like many of us in Ireland in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, McAleese kept silent about known institutional abuses and the gulags that stood at street corners where little ones and the deemed outcasts were put by state agencies, never to properly supervise the care provided by religious. Neither did she express any outrage during her 14 years as president. I’m not sure what her agenda is now but I find much of her rhetoric to be bitter, repetitive and inflamed by aggression. This is the lady who outstripped any other politician in paying constant homage to the mighty Catholic Church. We all change and see things differently with age and truthful reflection but I cannot accept her bona fide as a commentator.

When disappointment cuts through the narcissistic priest’s thick layer of grandiosity, self-promotion and breaches their core; their resulting melancholy or BOILING RAGE 😤 might motivate them to seek outside help — further abroad!
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), in fact, advises clinicians that individuals with NPD may present with a depressed mood. They rarely, however, come in seeking treatment for their narcissism. I’ve never heard anyone say, ‘‘I think I’m a narcissistic personality.’’
When a clear setback, such as a job loss or evil plans being scuttled, dents the carefully burnished self-image of a narcissistic individual, this is a real attack on who he is. Those he thought were in awe of him now very much dislikes him: and are no longer willing to put up with him anymore! Not surprisingly, he finds himself a little more down and depressed…
The narcissist will react poorly to even the gentlest of criticism — and must have constant reassurance. The way they feel special might actually be negative: They may see themselves as the ugliest person at the party or feel like a misunderstood genius in a world that refuses to recognise their gifts — God’s very own gift, in fact!
Some narcissists within the priesthood can be of the “communal” variety and actually devote their lives to helping others.(Charities, fundraising etc…). They may even come out with such statements as ‘’I’m the most helpful person I know,’’ or ‘’If I’m not right, I’m right’’ Or even, ‘’If its not Catholic, it’s Protestant!’’
These clerical narcissists are HIGHLY DANGEROUS INDIVIDUALS and should NOT, under any circumstances, be CROSSED! — Unless you have no fear for your own personal safety — for God’s sake: BE WARNED ! ! !
They will attempt to DESTROY YOU, or ANYBODY, who shows the slightest sign of resistance to their fantasia, their delusional make-belief world.

11.39: Interesting comment and very revealing. I’ve studied and learned all this “stuff” through therapy and can now spot the said group of people – narcissists. They come in all shapes and sizes, in all professions. They can enter your life in subtle and not so subtle ways and we can each possess traits of this “conditiin”, often without awareness. I’m glad, having read this comment, that it appears the author, with heavy rocks on his shoulders, seems to have gone through the process of discovering that he is/was a narcissist, and – hopefully (but I doubt) has come into the realm of being a normal, well adjusted and balanced individual. It is just a faint hope. Learned and absorbed psychological information should be applied to ourselves first and foremost!! 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎀🎀🎀🎀..Beware of converts to new insights…🎀🎀🎀🎀.

I don’t worry that much about what people think of me; narcissists do. I am not bothered, at all, about laying all my weaknesses on the ground far all to see. I am happy to lose EVERYTHING, even my liberty, just to protect the stranger on the street, without even the blink of an eye; the beat of a heart. If that makes me a narcissist, then so be it. I am a narcissist

Transparency, courage, and honesty: the three qualities urged upon the Vatican by Mary McAleese in any investigation it MIGHT make of its probable complicity in Jean Vanier’s history of sexual manipulation and exploitation of women.
She’s a clever woman, oor Mary, so why does she think that there’s even the remotest chance of these qualiteis appearing in anything the Vatican’s filthy hands touch?

Pat, it’s amazing that on social media yesterday all the secular comments are against McAleese on this one. Many are calling her the false faced bitch that she is and who has lowered herself to this extent. Compare her actions to Mary Robinson who is totally dignified and who I regard as a true president of Ireland. McAleese continues to tarnish that Office.

I agree. I’m absolutely disgusted by this, as are many of the Down and Connor priests. Unfortunately Bishop Trainor and his narcissistic poster boys can’t see any problem. They actually believe they are bringing ‘healing’ to our church and society?! Anyone who questions or challenges them is quickly cut down and ostracised. They can’t keep telling us ministry comes first when, like yesterday, O’Hagan ditched a confirmation to receive his MBE. Performances come first. End the duplicity – take time out of ministry and return when the music career is over.

It doesn’t matter why she has turned against st the RCC. What matters is that she has woken up and the blinkers have been removed from her eyes. The RCC establishment should be alarmed given that one of its most fervent supporters now sees through it. Nothing shocks me anymore about this church. Day after day, the moves that these people are up to are exposed. I honestly do not know why there are some who continue to defend this crowd

Poor McAleese, she has really lost the plot. What a transformation from the perfect model of a Catholic president to a whining old bag. It all seems to stem from her son’s coming out as gay. Suddenly, Catholic teaching which hasn’t changed for eons becomes unjust, inhuman, contemptible and a violation of human rights etc. It would seem that her self image as an Uber-Catholic was shattered in her own eyes by her progeny coming out and she decided instead to demonise the church as a defense mechanism. Madam President let me assure you that you are no different to the hundreds of thousands of catholic mammies who cope with sexual deviants in their families, and you belong now as much as you ever did, no one is judging you except your own negative self-talk which seems to have kicked in.
We are all shocked by the Vanier story, like your good-self I too held the man in high esteem as a model of a faith filled life, and I am devastated by what has surfaced. But I leave the man to God, he will answer for his duplicity.
I do not believe that the Vatican had any clear knowledge of the sad facts involved so I wont be writing to anybody in high dudgeon threatening anything. I will instead get on with Lent, and continue to work on my own conversion of heart. I respectfully suggest Madam President, that you do the same.

8.04: Madame McAleese is not the sole aggrieved one at the revelations about Vanier. In writing her letter, it seems to me she’s on a mission to slap Pooe Francis in the face. She has so much passive aggression in her that I can feel it in her words. I would like to know if McAleese has ever taken part in any parish activities to make her community a more welcoming, inclusive and Christian place. Has she visited the parish fetes, shaken hands with bishops, clerics and religious as she did every hour if her 14 years in the Aras. Was all this outreach to the Catholic community a clever on to earn votes? Where is her voice about the present day child poverty, hunger, homelessness, children with special needs? She has a powerful voice which she could use for these social injustices but somehow she knows concerns attacks the Church in whatever guise, she’ll be given attention. If she joins another denomination she will be quickly disappointed because she won’t be allowed to dictate or to be so dismissively critical as a new member. Incidentally, I worked in a L’Arche Community and what inspiring people I encountered among the residents and carers!! Wonder if Lady McAleese ever did so????

None, indeed. The Vatican facilitated it, just as it did the predatory, abusing, vile priests it sought to protect over and above endangered children around the globe.

I’d be astonished if the Vatican actually answered McAleese’s questions, because this evil, Romanist cult, and her lying priests, knew about dirty Jean Vanier for most of his sexually exploiting, rotten personal life. But hey! There were shovelfuls of kudos for the Vatican in this, and it was not going to risk not enjoying the reflected glory, much less the scandal of revealing the true nature of Vanier…and of the Vatican and her vile priest-pimps.

Like

3:49
It is within the bounds of possibilities the six victims of sexual exploitation by Vanier are the ‘tip of the iceberg’,
or at least, it’s very likely more victims will come forward.

Like

4.02

You can count on that.

I don’t doubt that Vanier sexually abused sexually disabled women, too. How could they complain? And who would have taken them seriously had they managed to articulate their plight? I hope that evil bastard Vanier is now where he ought, and chose, to be.

And I don’t doubt that the Vatican knew the danger these women were in, but preferred to look away. In fact, some of its priests at the Curia may have had women procured for them by Vanier.

Jean Vanier was propagandised by the Church as a living saint; he was its poster boy.

This is primarily all the Romanist cult cares about…appearances.

Like

4:17
At the moment, the L ‘arche Community leadership believe he didn’t sexually exploit people with disabilities. Apparently, there’s no evidence to suggest he did, as of yet.

Like

6.31

With respect, there wouldn’t be any such evidence, would there? These were intellectually disabled adults, INARTICULATE adults. How on earth could any of them abused by Vanier make this clear? How could any of them so abused defend herself, not just through intellectual incapacity, but against the towering reputation of a man prejudiced as a living saint?

I have a beautiful, intellectually disabled niece, and she could not express coherently any such abuse had it ocurred to her.

L’Arche is in serious denial about Vanier. He cared nothing for women. He even procured vulnerable women for his priest-mentor, Fr Philippe, to abuse sexually. They colluded in this vile exploitation, treating women as sexual playthings.

If Vanier had such, mysogynistic contempt for intellectually functioning women, do you seriously believe that he respected any more those who were not?

Like

6:56
MC, I take your point, but it’s not necessarily the case. It’s a bit of a generalization.
I worked in a L’arche community many years ago. People’s levels of disability and functionality varies.
Some people are articulate.
I’m aware of a case in Ireland where the family of a person with a learning disability, who had being sexually abused, took a case against the agency and carers, including a doctor, for sexual abuse.
So those kind of cases can come to light. Not necessarily easily, nevertheless, they can and do emerge from time to time.

The real painful and upsetting thing here, though, is how somebody could even contemplate doing the slightest of harm to these children of God.
This blog is vital in raising safeguarding awareness – even more so when those charged with safeguarding are found to not be doing their job.
Vigilance and Action are just a few small strands of the safeguarding strategies. We are all called to act according to our consciences.

I didn’t say that this was necessarily the case about Vanier: I said (at 4.17) only that I didn’t doubt that Vanier had sexually abused also intellectually disabled women. In other words, ‘this is my opinion’. And it is reasonable, given what we now know about Vanier, that he very likely sexually manipulated and exploited at least six, emotionally vulnerable, intellectually functioning women. If these, then, why not intellectually disabled women? Your disinclination to accept the possibility of this strikes me as being nothing more than an unwillingness to accept it, through personal distaste. This amounts to a bias which, I believe, is shared by the L’Arche leardership; it is dangerous, because it can only hinder the search for truth and justice here.

Vanier selected his victims carefully, those least likely to make a complaint. And the fact that his victims (those we know of, at any rate) came forward only AFTER his death proves my point.

I do know that there is a spectrum of intellectual disability: that some on it are higher functioning than others; that some are more articulate than others.

But again, Vanier selected his victims carefully. He wasn’t an impulsive fool: he was as methodical as he was manipulative. He would have applied the same MO on any intellectually disabled women as he did on those who were not.

Like

On the contrary.
I don’t hold a torch for L’arche or Vanier.
In my opinion, he may have sexually exploited some women with learning disablities. That’s a reasonable view, knowing what we know.
However, to date, there’s no evidence to say he did. I’m saying, evidence may come to light in the future.

What are they thinking ?! How much hurt must this cause to people who have suffered at the hands of the British State in Ireland over centuries, not least during the Troubles ? Why? here, as with Professor McAleese, is a pointless distraction.

Like

They’re not actually interested in why her view has changed, but by keeping saying that it has changed they want to make out that the problem is with her, that she is unstable in some way. It is the same mechanism as when they point out to you that you once wanted to be a priest and don’t now, it is volitionally ignoring the bit where you tell them that you have realised what you didn’t realise then.
In fact with McAleese it is simple as she didn’t realise he was a monster, the publicity made him out to be a saint, but she now realises the man was an abusive monster.
But that ain’t good enough for the Cathbots because it makes the point yet again that unholy mother church promotes abuse and violence.

It certainly is a pointless distraction. But it serves those still in denial. They don’t have to deal with the issue while scapegoating McAlesse, as if she’s the problem. It seems to me many are simply brainwashed, morally infantile as well as morally arrested.

Well said. And well encapsulated.

Yes, they are in denial, and are trying to exploit Professor McAleees’s changed outlook. But they are wasting their time: she has the Vatican on the ropes.

Pope Francis may react to her letter, as he did to the charge by Archbishop Vigano. But he will not address it. Instead, he will retreat into sullen, incriminating silence.

Pope Francis is an oily fool and a coward; he is baling water INTO the creaking Barque of Peter, not out of it.

4.37: Magna, you may well laud McAleese but I’m certain that if allowed and had she won a 3rd term of office as President, her son would still be in the cupboard! No doubt. And she’d still be paying homage to bishops asses and rings. No doubt.

Mrs. McAlesse, served two terms in office as President.
That’s the maximum. Your speculation is fantasy. No doubt.

3.40: You, head banger (with drink) Carta, are another passive aggressive, immersed so deep in your backside that your words literally have the perfume of your caca…black, rancid, poisonous. Pity you don’t open the gospels to TRULY UNDERSTAND HOW TO BE A DECENT, NORMAL HUMAN BEING. And yes, Jesus did express some teachings in a very forthright way by calling the authorities “whited sepulchres”, “brood of vipers”…I’m assuming that you reject these descriptions which are befitting of your type?? Or perhaps you don’t believe such language? Wonder if you also remember the teachings of Jesus when he calmly and gently asks us “to love one another as I have loved you..” or ” be compassionate as your heavenly Father is compassionate” or “do not judge, do not condemn” or “let he who is without sin throw the first stone”. Aren’t these words very powerful in ensuring we don’t forget TO always look to our own hearts first? Just a few thoughts Marge dearie!!

Well, more than a few thoughts by you, to be honest. And not one of them worth its space on this blog.

Magna’s Mummy
Jesus was well and truly cheesed off with the scribes and the Pharisees; and He didn’t shy away from telling them straight up. He was full of love for them, but they would not let their guard down – so, He let his guard down to show us that love means giving somebody the ability to hurt you – but trusting they will not. In order to love, we must first make ourselves vulnerable. By opening His arms out wide He became completely vulnerable… this act of love is the model of true love. He made Himself vulnerable, even as a baby, and in doing so, He opened our eyes.
Foolish? Quite possibly. Yea, too right! But love is about throwing all caution to the wind and taking the plunge.

I’m all for people living in the present and not keep harking back to the past but the O’Hagans who eminate from Derry have upset a lot of their fellow county men, not by meeting Prince Charles per se but meeting him whilst he holds the rank of colonel in chief of the notorious Para’s. Why were they even there? They are fame hungry fools and not pastors of the gospels. Some priests are so far up their own jacksies that they will do anything for recognition, fame. Bloody fools the lot of them. Or is it the catholic congregations who are fools by continuing to donate to this shower? I’m sure Eugene O’Hagan cannot wait to add the MBE letters on to his headed stationery. Buck eejit

Totally agree. These 3 along with D’ arcy should be shunned. Have any of them read their history? Hang your heads in shame traitors because you’ve brought on us nothing but shame.

6.02: This is the kind of comment that this blog requires. It is the kind that initiate a, reflective, honest and intelligently constructive debate about how those of us who truly care, can renew a broken priesthood and Church; the kind of comment that encourages honesty, truth and illumination instead of the viperous, condemnatory, irrational rants and grudges of some. Sadly, this blog only tolerates the latter.

If that were the case (that the blog tolerates…), the post at 6.02 wouldn’t have been published, now would it? (Sigh 😩)
