Father Ray Kelly is dancing with joy as he has made an estimated €30,000 from Dancing with the Stars.


And the 66-year-old priest has revealed exactly what he’s going to do with his windfall from the hit RTE show.


“I’m releasing an album shortly and I owe the record producer in London almost €30,000 for the album I recorded,” he told the Sunday World.


“I am paying him back by degrees, because no record company came behind me to do this album this time around. So I have to pay for it myself. Most of it will go towards that.”

Contestants on the TV ballroom dancing show are reportedly paid €3,000 for each episode they take part in and last night saw Fr Ray notch up his 10th appearance.

“The album, which will be my third one to release, may be called Hallelujah Day or Father Of All Ages,” says Fr Ray, who first shot to fame when a video of him singing Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah back in 2014 became a YouTube hit.

“The songs are all recorded, I’m waiting for the final tweaking. I have a colleague in Vienna putting the rest of it together and hopefully it will be out in the next month or so.”


Fr Ray, who is based in Tyrrellspass, Co Westmeath, later shot to TV fame in 2018 when he made the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent, bowling over Simon Cowell and the other judges with his version of R.E.M’s Everybody Hurts.

He was approached by producers with DWTS to take part on the RTE show later the same year but he fractured his foot as a concert, which put him out of action.
“Then they came back again and asked would I consider it this time around and I said `yeah, let me think about it’,” he explains.


“In hindsight looking back on it, when you sign up for something like that you don’t really realise the amount of work involved or the intensity of the training, because it can be 12 or 14 hours a week, but in fairness we put in an awful lot more than that
“I’m still getting on doing my parish work. Life is normal for me. I never asked for this…even the word celebrity, dancing with the stars, stars and celebrity status doesn’t really sit comfortably enough with me because I just see myself as an ordinary priest getting on with life and doing the best I can.”

Pat, I am a harsh critic of you at times but I think you are spit on re: Fr. Kelly. He was entitled to be on DWTS and to receive his financial benefits. Now I believe he should keep his mouth shut. A certain reserve (which is not the same as being standoffish or unfriendly) and dignity (which is not the same as standing on one’s pedestal) are desirable attributes in a priest. Some clergy may be able to retain these qualities while pursuing an interest in public performance: the distinguished Scottish tenor, Canon Sydney MacEwan, was a fine example. But it can’t be easy to do so, and the temptation to add singing or dancing as a sideline to ministry is surely best resisted.

Even if it were true that Magna Carta were thrown out of seminary (and he has repeatedly set the record straight about this) he should look on that as an honour and confirmation of his good character. Even deciding to leave for oneself can only be seen as a sign of good morals, a willingness to live one’s life in charity, and with respect to others.

It suits certain posters here to portray me as a ‘seminary reject’, a ‘drunk’ (and whatever nastily else they could conceive), because it means that my core narrative (the moral degeneration of Roman Catholic priesthood) is unassailably true. Its being so leaves these posters only one option : ad hominem argumentum. This involves not attacking my character since, despite what some have stated to the contrary, none of them actually knows me, so they invented a character (the seminary reject, etc) to discredit the content of my posts. It hasn’t worked, because most readers know for themselves now that the institutional Roman Catholic Church is deconstructing itself (or, as I prefer to believe, is being deconstructed by Almighty God, brought to a point by such historical and staple betrayal through Roman Catholic priests that he has been left no choice other than rebuilding his assembly).

Just because someone / we have scuppered them and now understand their psychology and pathology and why they do things and for whom, they don’t like it, so they go on the attack. Australia’s highest court has deferred ruling on an appeal to overturn the conviction of former Vatican treasurer George Pell for sexually assaulting two teenage choirboys in the 1990s.
After two days of legal arguments, the High Court of Australia said it was still considering whether to allow the appeal, the last avenue for the 78-year-old cardinal to clear his name.
If the court does agree to consider the appeal, the seven-member panel of justices will then move straight into deciding whether to acquit Pell or uphold his conviction, a process that will not require another public hearing.
A third option – sending the case back to a lower court – is also possible.
“The court reserves its decision on this matter,” High Court Chief Justice Susan Kiefel said, after hearing arguments from Pell’s lawyer and the Crown prosecutor.
The Chief Justice did not give a timeframe for the court’s decisions.
Pell became the highest ranked Catholic worldwide to be jailed for child sex offences when he was sentenced to a six-year term.
