THE CORONAVIRUS CHALLENGE AND INVITATION.

NOW THAT THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND HAS GONE INTO “LOCK DOWN” TO COUNTERACT CORONAVIRUS WE ALL HAVE TO SERIOUSLY STOO AND THINK.

This affects us very much in Northern Ireland as we are on one island with the Republic.

Coronavirus does not recognise national borders.

A threat to the Republic of Ireland is a threat to Northern Ireland.

And ALL OF US must do everything we can to counteract this REAL, SERIOUS, THREAT.

I have made the decision personally to avoid all unnecessary social interactions and journeys.

Our Sunday Mass at The Oratory will have hand sanitizers with 80% alcohol content for people to use as they enter and leave The Oratory.

There will be Communion in the hand only and no shared chalice.

We never have a hand to hand collection and people , if they wish, can drop a donation in a bag on the way out.

We are cancelling our after Mass refreshments for the foreseeable future.

As most of my weddings are from the Republic I will encourage, but not force, couples and families to postpone dates.

If the situation worsens I will cancel all Masses and ceremonies.

At all times our congregation and I will faithfully observe all government and medical advice and guidelines.

I was due to visit Maghaberry Prison yesterday afternoon and I cancelled my visit in the interests of  the welfare of the prisoners, the prison staff, visitors and myself.

I have no intention of stockpiling foods  medications, toiletries or meds. No one needs to stockpile. I believe government reassureances about the security of supplies.

There is no need for panic.

But there is a most urgent need for calm, rationality, abiding by government and medical advice and, I think, care for others and trust in God.

And, as the Irish government has recommended the cancellation of all indoor meeting of over 100 people, all churches attracting such numbers should suspend their services.

MESSAGE SENT TO THE ORATORY CONGREGATION LAST NIGHT.

Pat, we received very good directives this evening from the Dublin Diocese re: decisions, advice and regulations. We will follow these guidelines very vigorously. The guidelines are similar to what you have drawn up, reflecting all medical guidance. There is a palpable sense of worry and anxiety. Hopefully this will pass but I believe this virus pandemic will make each of us appreciate the simple blessings of life. Maybe a kuttle mire kindness is called for from everyone, not nasty comments at this time. Our Church will remain open all day for prayer and we will have one daily mass, keeping within the restrictions. We all need to pray for one another, for the medics and health staff and to care for our elderly, vulnerable and fragile in our parishes.

I see Bishop Tighe from Rome got himself on to the BBC radio this morning, saying some rather anodyne things, although I suppose it is hard to find anything of substance to say that isn’t already being said. I guess they found him traipsing across St Peter’s Square on his way to…….work ?
It is good to see places like the Oratory Society taking sensible and proactive steps to provide a way forward. At least we know what’s happening there. I have to admit, even though I’ve been to church in the last couple of weeks, I’ve not heard much about what the church here in London / Westminster is doing to address the pandemic. I have a sense that there is an air of being detached, and above, what is happening elsewhere, and carrying on regardless. + Vin needs to crack the whip (he’s usually pretty good at that) and get his clergy to pull out the finger and show some leadership.

I wasn’t going to comment today, because I am weary of hearing about Covid-19. But those pictures…πŸ˜…
Despite all the bloody, endless commentary on Coronavirus, it is, REALLY, just another strain of influenza (flu). And flu has ALWAYS been a more serious health risk to the very elderly, to those with underlying health problems, to those with less-than-robust immunity, and to the very young. But there was never the face-shrieking panic, this level of human mental disintegration, we are now witnessing.
The panic this nonsense is generating is, on one level, hilarious, and many people are making UTTER fools of themselves over it. They will be mercilessly teased (and feel either total tits, or withering shame) for their big-girls’-blouse reactions in, say, six-months’-time. Maybe in less.

Hi Pat. You say “I believe government reassurances about the security of supplies.” You are not usually so accepting of the word of those in authority. In fact, this is usually one of your strengths. Norms from the Irish (RC) Episcopal Conference – 12 March 2020:
– All non-essential pastoral gatherings and meetings, such as formation gatherings, retreats and seminars are cancelled.
– All Confirmations are postponed until further notice.
– Every Catholic is entitled to a dignified Christian burial. Attendance at Funeral services and Masses should be limited to close relatives and must not exceed 100 attendees within the church building.
– Similarly, Church weddings and baptisms may be celebrated on condition that the attendance in church does not exceed 100 people.
– In these difficult and uncertain times, people find strength, consolation and hope in prayer. Churches should remain open for prayer each day.
– In the current emergency situation, all are dispensed from the obligation to physically attend Sunday Mass. Parishes should inform parishioners of the local possibilities to participate in Mass via local radio and online. It may be possible for some parishes to facilitate attendance at Mass while still observing the health authority’s limit of 100 people.
– This is an occasion for all of us – especially in families – to pray more intensely for each other and especially for those who have succumbed to the illness. We should pray also for those at the frontlines – especially doctors, nurses and medical staff and other carers, including clergy – that the Lord will protect them as they place their own wellbeing at risk in the service of all.

Not one of the priests you lionise had the backbone to speak out, publicly and openly, against the abuse cover-ups in the Church and against the bad examples set by bishops, like Noel Treanor. Not one.
Now exercise your intelligence. If they weren’t prepared to put themselves out this much, do you really believe that they’ll put their precious health and lives on the line for very sick parishoners? That would take selflessness, a quality absent in most Romanist clerics.

Like

7.00: Magna, I visited 12 housebound parishioners today and many of my fellow colleagues are doing likewise. We had a Parish Council Meeting today to discuss the care of the sick, elderly and housebound. I think it’s very sad, frightening and deeply disappointing that you fight with your shadow over any issue that is about priests. (You must be exhausted with all this negative energy). Those who live in the real world know the difference between truth and fiction. Sadly, your fiction is the constant motif of lying about, degrading, ridiculing and condemning every cleric. There are many, many of us who genuinely live as best we can and in many crises, difficult moments and trials, as we are presently experiencing, we priests most definitely will be carers in a way unimaginable to you. You are wrong Magna to use this very serious pandemic which has brought fear to many and trivialize its seriousness by spouting your hatred against good priests, of which there are many. If you don’t want to follow a model of caring for the sick given by Catholic Priests, you might at least find Pat’s approach an inspiration for you to get up off your big a**e, emerge from your self isolation and go out and ACTUALLY do something useful in this time of trial. Pat, well done to you for your caring.

Were you, priest, or any of your sponging colleagues, in mortal danger by your, er, exhausting β€˜visitations’ to the sick and elderly housebound? We both know the answer to this, so take your implied mock heroic selflessness and shove it.

And what was your motivation, priest? No! Your REAL motivation? Might it have been (or, in part, comprised) the highly likely prospect that at least some of the people you visited would pay for the β€˜privilege’? We both know the answer to this, too?

As for getting off my β€˜big arse’ priest, how many sick elderly have you transported to hospital this week? Not many (if any), I’m sure. I have been busy this week taking to hospital elderly patients whose families really don’t give a f**k about them, like you priests, unless of course it is made financially worth their, and your, while.

I remember the priest-parasites who regularly visited my mum in the years before her death. She suffered with Alzheimer’s Disease, and gave each of them a great deal of money. None of them ever missed a visit to her, and I’m not surprised. And none of them ever declined the wad of notes she would press into their grasping hands.

Oh! And I am not using what you stupidly call a β€˜very serious pandemic’. Is this how you frighten the people you visit? By talking the Corobavirus melodrama cum burlesque? Does it panic them into having Masses offered by you, and your sponging colleagues.? For a price, of course. And I’ll bet you allow them to put a price on the β€˜donation’, for the good of their health of body and soul. Fear inflates the price of a Mass, doesn’t it priest? And you parasites are proficient traders in fear; it is how your church has maintained its stranglehold on people for 2000 years now.

One more thing priest, did it never cross your tiny, self-serving, stupid mind that you, and your sponging colleagues, could be putting these people at risk of further ill-health if either you, or they, are carrying the Coronavirus. I don’t suppose it did. Because you were focusing on other, much more important things, weren’t you, like how much cash you would have to forego by cancelling any of your β€˜visitations’.

Our church where I am, while cancelling all masses, apart from funerals, will be open each day from 9am – 5pm. Today, many people came to light candles, spend time in prayer, pray the rosary etc….much more noble and commendable than your crass and ignorant cynicism. Churches ARE places of calm and peace for people in times of challenge. We take our guidance from the HSE, the Archdiocese and other professional bodies. Also, I feel very sorry for the local businesses as all will suffer greatly because of the virus. I feel greatly for all medical and health care staff with the enormous pressure on them. I feel sorry too for our elderly people who love daily mass and gathering in our centre for tea/coffee and comraderie every day. Let’s keep all in our prayers. It is therefore a time for good neighbourliness and community spirit, not trivial cynicism.

Vitamin D reduces respiratory infections
Date:
November 16, 2016
Source:
University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
Summary:
Vitamin D, scientists have discovered, reduces respiratory infections, a potentially life-saving discovery in older patients at high risk for these illnesses.
Researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus have found that high doses of vitamin D reduce the incidence of acute respiratory illness (ARI) in older, long-term care residents.
The findings of the clinical trial, published today in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, could help reduce one of the leading causes of serious illness, debilitation and death among patients in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
“After studying these patients for a year, we found a 40 percent reduction in acute respiratory illness among those who took higher doses of vitamin D,” said the study’s lead author, Adit Ginde, MD, MPH, professor of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. “Vitamin D can improve the immune system’s ability to fight infections because it bolsters the first line of defense of the immune system.”
Ginde said in older people that first line of defense is often impaired. But vitamin D can reinforce it and prevent illnesses like pneumonia, influenza and bronchitis.
It may also prevent infections and exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) like emphysema.
At the same time, Ginde found that those who received higher doses of vitamin D also saw an increase in falls. The falls were lower in those given smaller doses rather than higher monthly doses of vitamin D.
The clinical trial, the first to examine vitamin D’s impact on respiratory infections in nursing home residents, looked at 107 patients with an average age of 84 over a 12 month period. Of those, 55 received high doses of vitamin D or 100,000 units monthly (averaging 3,300-4,300 units daily). And 52 received lower doses averaging between 400-1,000 units daily. Those with higher doses saw ARIs cut nearly in half. They also had over double the incidence of falls, the study said.
“This finding requires a confirmatory trial, including whether high daily doses of vitamin D, rather than high monthly doses, makes patients less likely to fall,” Ginde said.
But Ginde said the primary finding that vitamin D can reduce ARI is a major step forward in treating these dangerous infections.
“This is a potentially life-saving discovery,” Ginde said. “There is very little in a doctor’s arsenal to battle ARI, especially since most are viral infections where antibiotics don’t work. But vitamin D seems able to potentially prevent these infections.”
He cautioned that the study is not definitive proof that vitamin D can prevent ARI but it suggests that it can and at little risk to the patient.
