THE RCSAH – ROMAN CATHOLIC SEXUAL ABUSE HOLOCAUST.

Brigid Delaney

ABC’s documentary about a convicted paedophile priest is difficult to watch, but perhaps it’s necessary to bear witness

 @BrigidWD

Mon 16 Mar 2020 23.40 GMTLast modified on Tue 17 Mar 2020 05.02 GMT

Despite an extensive royal commission, scores of criminal trials and excellent books such as Louise Milligan’s Cardinal and David Marr’s The Prince, there are still some unanswered questions about child sexual abuse in the now-tattered narrative of the Catholic church in Australia. These include: why did these priests do such horrible things? How did they justify their crimes to themselves and to God? What kind of conversations may they have had with, say, their archbishop or monsignor, once they were rumbled by a parent or teacher or victim?

Accounts from the paedophiles themselves that may go some way towards answering those questions are also missing from this narrative. Perhaps this is because paedophiles do not want to talk due to shame or due to the media’s preference for – in some cases – giving victims airtime and denying a platform to abusers. And then there’s us, the audience. Do we really want to hear from them?

There are arguments for listening to perpetrators explain themselves. You can better understand the crime if you understand the criminal. And the Catholic church has for a long time been so opaque on matters of sexual abuse that any interview, no matter how painful to watch, is illuminating. The first episode of the three-part documentary Revelation is built around such an interview. ABC journalist Sarah Ferguson sits down with Fr Vincent Ryan (yes he is still a priest, yet to be defrocked despite his horrendous crimes against children) and tries to answer all these questions.Ryan is 80 now and has been accused of sexually abusing more than 30 boys aged from six to 17 from 1975 until 1995.He was jailed for 14 years for his crimes in 1997 and last year he was tried on two new charges. These charges form the backbone of the documentary – for the first time during an Australian criminal trial, the ABC were allowed to film.

As well as interviewing Ryan (who pleaded not guilty), Ferguson speaks to two of the victims, the prosecution and defence barristers, as well as a psychiatrist who specialised in treating priests.

The documentary doesn’t make a promising start, opening with an introduction from Ferguson that is as purple as a priest’s Lenten vestments: “There are men living among us, like Lucifer’s fallen angels. It’s their ordinariness that I find disturbing. They really should look like monsters to match their deeds.”

Lucifer’s fallen angels? People that should look like monsters? Really?Luckily such flowery language is kept to a minimum and the old technique of “show, don’t tell” quickly takes over. And that’s really all that’s necessary, because there’s a lot on show here that we haven’t seen or heard before on our screens. Be warned – you’ll need a strong stomach to digest it. Like, for example, Ryan’s justification for molestation: “As far as I was concerned, I was in a relationship. I was getting the love and the human touch and belonging.”And then there’s the central crime itself. The victims – courageous men of strength and grace – tell us what happened to them.
They don’t spare us with the details, and why should they? Part of the problem, as the documentary points out, is that shame abounds. The victims suffer twice: from the act itself and then the silence and stigma after it.

The victims were young altar boys. What alternate moral universe was Ryan living in? It was the universe of the Catholic church, a corrupt institution that moved paedophile priests around to avoid scandal, conveniently giving them a batch of fresh victims in each new parish; an institution that saw the children as “instruments of temptation” rather than the innocent victims they were.

Revelation starts off strange, becomes upsetting and is, finally, shocking. In some ways it mimics the mechanics of a jury trial: we, at home, hear all sides. There is no room for politeness or euphemism. The whole nasty, sorry business is laid out before us, and it’s hard to remain with it, but there is a strong feeling that we must bear witness. The detail of the abuse is horrendous and I wish I hadn’t heard it. But maybe as someone raised Catholic and still has some cultural affinity with the Irish branch of the church, I needed to.• Revelation airs in three parts on ABC TV, starting 17 March at 8.30pm

PAT SAYS
Lucifer’s fallen Angel’s?
Well child abuse is definitely an evil.
Covering up for abusers is also evil.
Some commentators have been saying that they are exhausted reading about abuse.
Are they exhausted or are they trying to forget?
And how many priests are among the would be forgetters?
The abuse that has happened must NEVER be forgotten.
Its equivalent to the Nazi Holocaust.
Abuse is the Catholic Church’s very own Holocaust.
Millions died in the Nazi Holocaust. How many children, women, men, seminarians were destroyed in the RCSAH – The Roman Catholic Sexual Abuse Holocaust?
The Nazi Holocaust happened in concentration camps.
The RCSAH happened in churches, confessionals, sacristies, presbyteries, schools, monasteries, convents and episcopal palaces. This prayer and reflection were specially written by Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg, President of CCJ and Senior Rabbi of Masorti Judaism, for Holocaust Memorial Day 2020.E’l De’ot, God who knows,God who says Immo anochi betzarah, ‘I am with you in your troubles’,Be with us, instruct us, guide us.Give us eyes to see, ears to hear, a heart to care.Discomfort our conscience, dispel indifference.Demand of us the determination to name and call out hatred, in ourselves, our society, the world, anywhere, everywhere.Prevent us from despairing of the power of goodness, compassion, courage and faith.Imbue us with loving kindness to cure the wounds with can be healed and tend with gentle understanding those beyond our repair.Open our hearts to the intricate, destructible wonder and fragile privilege of life.

Yes, the filthy, cowardly Romanist PARASITES would happily have the entire world move on from THEIR kiddie-fiddling, or by knowledge of it by scum Romanist clerics.

Sexual abuse is everywhere in society . Who really cares? You all cover up and protect the perps – whether it’s Mommy, Daddy, grampa, Uncle Joey, auntie Marge, cousin Betsy, Pastor Bob, Fr Mike, Rabbi Reuben, Reverend Wayne, Imam Ahmed. Rev Marjorie. Who gives a f@@@ so long as your f@@@ed up society is protected and you all don’t really have to deal with it and continue to make your “offended about abuse” noises and gasps of faux outrage. Bastards the lot of ya. You don’t give a f@@@! Ever had the sensation of your uncle Larry’s penis forced up your backside? No? Enjoy your day of righteous indignation led by the usual w***kers. After 3am and I can’t sleep. Thos website does not fool me into to thinking anything. Pouring drink into me to knock myself out. It’s not working tonight for some reason. Not one of you give a flying fiddlers fack. I know kids who took their own lives because the scout leader abused them and or the football coach. Who cares? None of you. Bye

Pointing the finger isn’t an indication that you care.
Descending to extreme vulgarity and resorting blindly to generalisations at 1:16 a.m. (Note the time.) isn’t an expression of care for anyone. It’s more likely the main (the only?) way in which you feel good about yourself.
There is professional help out there. All you need to do is decide to look for it.

You’re not only an idiot; you’re also a loser.

You are using the serious plight of the poster at 3.14 to have yet another go at me.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself for this, but what’s the point of telling someone with restricted emotional intelligence something as significant as this? I didn’t think that even you would stoop to the point of slithering on your belly to get one over on me. But there you have it: there’s no accounting for aberant human nature.

As for professional help, you come to the point quite readily. Repeated attempts, by you and by another poster (all sad failures so far), to put me down are now so common that they actually suggest an obsessive psychological pathology of some sort. Why don’t you both first get together to form a self-help duo? Failing this (and it probably would fail, since your problems are too deep-seated for limited intelligence to resolve), you could each accompany the other for psychological counselling. You could always hold each other’s hand for mutual support; it’s the way very young children cope when they are scared.

I am sorry but this article very basically misunderstands something: we hear from the perpetrators all the time. You can hear the perpetrators’ narrative on any RC media outlet and it appears on this blog all the time.
It’s a continual refusal to face the facts and refusal to talk about them and you can tell when it surfaces because you hear things like:
Stop being negative.
There are good priests.
You are full of hatred.
You have said this before.
I’m not like them.
It happens elsewhere.
Look at the CofE.
It was only a few priests.
… All displaying the attitude which allowed and perpetuated this and anyone who thinks like this is a perpetrator. This is exactly how a paedophile thinks.

Appalling. Absolutely, Appalling.
The Irish branch of the Catholic Church has been described as ‘ground zero’ of abuse in the Church worldwide.
Shameful. They still, have not learned, if posts from some clerics to this blog is anything to go on.
Reports could probably be written on most, if not all dioceses in Ireland.
Meanwhile, bishops are still lying.
I know, having recently been lied to and misrepresented by a serving bishop, to protect a priest.
That priest, a moral coward, should hang his head in shame.
This is a fundamental moral/spiritual/criminal issue.
There are profound consequences in life, for many survivors of abuse, including spiritual abuse.
Maybe, just maybe, the good Lord, in the current Covid-19 crisis, is lifting His protection from everyone temporarily,
for His own kind purposes.
Bishop Pat, thank you for reference to the prayer from Rabbi Wittenberg. It brings to mind Psalm 91. Take care.

A few years ago, when the rising sludge of child-sexual abuse in the Church was becoming over-powering, I asked a priest whether he believed Canon Law should take precedence over Civil Law. He looked at me as if I had taken leave of my senses for asking such a question, and then nodded his head.
This is the mindset of many priests in the Church, even today. The rarified air of divinely ordained exceptionalism they breathe wouldn’t allow them even to toy with the thought that they, like everyone else, must be subject to the Law of the Land.
I’m not surprised that you were treated in the way you described. But I am surprised that you ever thought that you would be treated better by any of these parasites.

Heresy at 5:45 a.m. The good Lord, as you call God, is not responsible for the virus. Viruses happen. They come and go. How could someone have such a twisted mind as to think otherwise. Everything else you write needs to be interpreted in that light.
You are guilty of spiritual abuse.

How and why would someone manipulatively twist the comment to think otherwise.
Are you a bishop or a retired bishop?
You certainly sound like a pompous, condesending, patronising individual,
gaslighting commentators whose comments cause discomforting cognitive dissonance.
The bishopric type, indeed. Would Jesus Christ approve of gaslighting?
Regardless, rev., people like you have the catholic church in its current state of shameful implosion.
Everything else you write, I suggest, needs to be interpreted in that light.

If God is the author of all creation (suggested by the Creation Stories in Genesis), this would include, of course, organic life, even micro-organic life. Micro-organisms have been around…well, even before ‘Adam’ took his first dump. (They had to be, hadn’t they? Otherwise ‘Adam’ couldn’t have…You know…) Coronavirus is a mutated micro-organism within the broad family of influenza (flu) viruses. If God didn’t create this virus, then there must be another creator, mustn’t there.

Whaddaya think, bud?

No; I hate to show you up, yet again loser, but the point of the Creation Stories in Genesis, adapted from Sumerian Civilisation, is to express the monotheistic authorship of Creation; this, naturally, includes micro-organic life. And Covid-19 is a micro-organism.

A micro-organism has no personality (therefore no capability of choosing personal malevolence and irreversible ontological disposition), so it cannot, logically, be called ‘evil’.

But then, we aren’t dealing with logic when dealing with you, are we?

Where did you study Phil…? No; you didn’t study Philosophy, did you? Evil is not created: Evil is an absence of the Good, a-void of God.

You’d profit more from, well, silence really.

To be serious, I really don’t believe that God creates ‘bad’ micro-organisms: they evolve from breaches of divine law, in other words, ‘of Natural Law’.

I said on a previous blog that when we choose to go it alone, to separate ourselves from God as it were, we invite sometimes truly terrible consequences; not punishments, but consequences.

You’re a loser.

You, and the other intellectual damp squib that regularly posts here, and, like you, regularly shows himself up.

Because your pathological jealously to prove yourself my intellectual better has driven you ‘nuts’, and to the point of mental self-harming. And you are harming yourself, because you are just too stubborn to know when you have been beaten, again, and again, and again. And since you are not young, your foolishness is thrown into high relief. There’s no fool like an old fool. You keep proving the proverb.

The only heart-moment I am experiencing here is not for you, but for the students you claimed to teach. I thought about watching it, Bp Pat, I may still do, but what’s the point really when we know the Catholic Church will never reform itself. Remember old Mrs Shufflebottom, after the same-sex marriage referendum, saying that the Church must listen, blah, blah, blah. Still, she was soon spouting the same old guff about the gift of celibacy, etc., as usual. All we can hope for is the Safeguarding procedures put in place in Ireland, and the UK are working and strictly adhered to.

Yes, the Romanist priests, and their Cathbot apologists, believe that everything that has been said, or could be said, about the rape or molestation of children by cowardly Romanist priests has already been expressed and that we all now should, er, just move on. You can almost hear them affectedly yawn while making these comments, and see a swift flick of a feminine wrist to stress their unendurable tedium.
This is evil at its most banal and disturbing : it really has no insight or concern (nor wants either) into the appalling psychical damage it has inflicted on the innocent.
Yesterday, I correctly excoriated Romanist priests for their continued support of an institution, the Roman Catholic Church, on foot of the seeming never- ending disclosures of child-sexual abuse and its cover-up by Christ-betraying Romanist clergy; predictably, I suffered a tsunami of verbal abuse for it, along with self-pitying complaints that my comments should not be tolerated on this blog.
I thought that nothing else about the baseness of the nature of some humans could shock me after I read ‘The Banality of Evil’, a book on the notoriously officious Nazi bureaucrat, Adolf Eichman. But I was wrong. What these bored Romanist priests inhabit is a world in which even the most dedicated Nazi might find too chilling to be comfortable. ☠️
As with the Holocaust, no one must ever be allowed to forget what a dirty, criminal institution, the Roman Catholic Church, has done to the most innocent and vulnerable, and shockingly, all in the name of Christ.

We are in interesting times, and things will never be the same going forward. The coronavirus health pandemic is going to change a huge amount of what we have taken as normal, given its effects not just on our health but also on important social and economic aspects of our lives. I think that there will be a mind shift on a number of issues – about how we relate to each other, how we support each other, how we reach across divides and borders, races and religion…..I could go on. My hope is that in the Church people will have an opportunity to stand back and look at things afresh, and be given new insight in to the Church. It will be interesting to see what the ecclesial isolation of no public Mass and no Sunday gathering is going to do to the way people look at their faith, their Church, their clergy. I think it may well have a profound effect. And one of those effects will be to help them realise that clergy and bishops are only one small part of the Church, and that they have worked themselves in to a position where they are seen as indispensable and as the only authority. That, I think, may well change, and the faithful themselves will see that they can survive individually and together and in association with God without the intervention of clergy. That experience could change everything. Add to that what the faithful now know about the clerical culture and its dysfunction, it is highly likely that there will be a substantial shift in the way the faithful and the clergy relate to one another. Once the faithful take up their rightful place, they will make the issue of clerical abuse a matter of ‘never again’ and ensure that they are able to oversee and control the clergy in order to ensure that it is ‘never again’, and never to be forgotten. In that sense, this crisis has the same quality as the Holocaust, at the very least in never being allowed to be diminished or forgotten. Or to happen again. Watch that space, watch how the faithful will emerge with their eyes open and a new found energy to take the Church back to a new beginning.

You’re a dreamer: a hopeless idealist.
When this pandemic has passed (and it will peak and pass sooner than the hysterical and the fearmongers believe), life will return to its familiar current, with people’s looking out for one another as little as they have always done.
As for the ‘faithful’, what are they faithful to? A macro-organism, the institutuonal RC Church, that is as much abhorrent as it is anachronistic. They have neither the radicalism nor the inclination to demand the humbling of the clergy who fleece them and exploit them; but then, not for nothing are they known as ‘sheep’.
Fortunately, we have an inquisitive media to call out the clerical villains in the Romanist Church, to bring them to heel for the disobedient and dishonest curmudgens they really are.
Here endeth the lesson. 😆

I forget which Romanist ‘saint’ said that people are incapable of doing good, since their motives are always self-interested; well, this, or something very like it. He (And it was a bloke.) was one of the few such ‘saints’ that didn’t typically come off with pious cheese.
So when you speak of goodness in people, I’m afraid that I’m more than a little cynical. Even our belief in Jesus is self-interested fear of Hell.
What Mark has Jesus say at 10:18 (‘No one is good, but God alone.’) seems to bear out what that ‘saint’ said.

The sooner this pandemic ends, for obvious reasons, the better.
However, the longer it goes on, the economic implications will likely become gigantic.
As it is, they are huge.
Whether the ‘faithful’ emerge with their eyes wide open remains to be seen. I hope so.
Some probably will, but I’d doubt in sufficient numbers to effect change.
Money and power rules the roost. That’s not likely to change.
However, it will be very interesting to see the implications of the pending economic down

11.09: The Churches and clerics won’t be the only ones to suffer. Since the clerical abuses came to the forefront parishes had to prioritise expenditure which they are still doing. We’ll manage the challenge. However my concern is for the small local businesses in our parish community, their families, employees, children, the economic impact for every citizen. I worry about our homeless charities and our own St. V. de Paul Society who help many needy families. It’s very cynical of any person to delight in the loss of income for any individual, group or community. That’s a horrible selfishness. Our St. V de Paul depend in an outdoor collection every week to help many, many families, in an income of 500/600 euro werkly they receive from Church goers. Do you have monthly mortgage repayments ? I do.
I’m not being cynical or delighting in the loss of income for any individual,
group, community or charitable organization.
Tell me, who funds the local churches and dioceses? The laity?
Concerns are already raised by catholic commentators on the loss of finance
for the institutional church, particularly since Sunday Masses are stopped in many dioceses around the world.
Maybe the day is coming when clergy will have to obtain part- time employment to
supplement their income from the diocese, or seek a social welfare payment, like the thousands of other citizens.
Glad to know you’ll manage the challenge. Many individuals, groups and organisations, won’t be so fortunate.
By the way, have you any constructive comments on today’s topic?
The silence and lack of constructive comment on the issue of clerical abuse by most clerical posters to this blog is nauseating.

The diocese in which I live is awash with money, huge investments and savings. The bishop complains however that the diocese is not now covering its expenses, and so wants to get people to up their giving. That is most certainly not going to work, and neither should it, when these people – the laity – he wants to get to give more are finding life difficult in the present situation themselves. Why should they give more ? Let the Church dig in to its own reserves and fund themselves from that. It’s a bit like EasyJet, which is asking the Government in the UK to give them money to survive this crisis, but at the same time is due to pay out hundreds of millions in dividends to its shareholders. Why should the Government and we taxpayers pay to keep companies like this going when they already have money saved and in the banks which could be used to keep them afloat ? Same with the Church. Why do we have to pay up when they have more than enough to see them out of this crisis ? I bet the clergy will not be foregoing their stipends or shopping on the parish, but I bet any lay employees of the diocese will quickly find that they are laid off or asked to take unpaid leave. The Church speaks about social and economic justice to others, but does not practice it itself when it should. Just watch that space. You will see dioceses pleading poverty and passing on the sacrifice to the people who work for it, and trying to persuade the laity to give more of the little they have, while securing its assets and savings and investments, and most certainly ensuring that clergy are still looked after. I bet you that happens.

What should a Christian response to sexual abuse by other Christians be?
If you take the NT line of dealing with it in-house then it would certainly include appealing to the perpetrator to repent and change their ways. However it would also mean ensuring that this scandal doesn’t continue happen to the little ones, by whatever means. It has been seen as OK to excommunicate the remarried so surely it should be OK for child sexual abuse.
I also feel that the leaders of the church who failed to deal with this should not remain in leadership and that the shame of this happening should be forever remembered so nobody can forget.

Not one has a live-stream ability at present, even though they all talk about keeping in touch through live streaming Mass. Really ?! But they have done nothing about it, even though they have had weeks to prepare ? Again, really ?! It makes me despair. Our clergy are so amateur, so up their own backsides and careless about their professional responsibilities. They would not survive in the real world. In the world I live in and work in we have had contingency plans in place for months, and ready to go at the push of a button. But, the Roman Catholic Church just seems to sit on its arse and let events overtake them. It really is shameful. For the first time in recent history, our churches are closed, but our bishops and clergy seem to have been taken by surprise, and except for a few saccharine, anodyne mutterings, nothing is really in place. Why could he not just begin his time in charge of the diocese as some sort of Episcopal Administrator or Vicar or whatever, still able to wear a mitre etc ? Until the current health crisis subsides and he can have a proper ceremony. There seems to be an indecent rush to get him done. I wonder why ? Are they worried that given further time or delay they might find something out or be told something that would be a problem. There have been mutterings about his suitability, and letters to the Nuncio. We know that the Church is never open and transparent about things. So, I guess we had a right to ask questions and not to take things at face value anymore. Coverup, duplicity, lying, avoiding, transference, keeping things quiet, trying to sneak things through – this is the modus operandi of the Church and clerics, sadly. So, I’m wary.

10.02: Magna: You are the eternal, hopeless , ignorant pessimist. Since by your frequent hate speech, horrid narratives, condemning, ridiculing and downing everyone, how could you be ever taken seriously? Your narratives should be binned. These days in our parish the witness of Christian kindness, goodness and caring is amazing. It confirms and deepens what’s already a TRUTH about our parish. I notice that those who are coming forward to be part of our Parish Caring Group are all people who are regular practising Catholics. Likewise our Church has a steady flow of peopke, some visitors, just passing by, all day till 6.00pm for prayer, reflection, keeping a distance as required. When you stop looking out at your empty surroundings, ridiculing and mocking, you might look at the SPIRITUAL EMPTINESS within. The viruses of hatred within you are the poisons which need eradication and isolation. Magna, you should try not to waken up some morning and do the world a favour. Your poisonous judgments from a selfish heart only heap pain on people. Thank God our priests are leading their communities with hope, peace, prayer and comfort – all noble gifts which God is revealing and giving through us – and which are denied you. Sadly, Magna, your madness, rage, envy and jealousy block out God’s love. May God bless our priests who are out visiting the sick, elderly and housebound and officiating at funerals. Stuff your hatred Maggot….

Thank you!
The hatred you condemn in me stands out so pointedly in your very own post.
The witness in your parish of ‘kindness, goodness and caring is amazing’? Well, I shall just have to take your word for that, since it isn’t obvious from your post. I suppose you are just a non-participant observer here… which is a posh way of saying that ‘none of the kindness, goodness and caring that you find amazing has rubbed off on you’.😂
Now THAT’S what I call ‘amazing’. 😀

Statistically, there is far more chance that the troll Magsy Carter is a “kiddie fiddler” than any priest. Indeed, in one’s own experience, some of those who denounce and scream from their high horses, at all and sundry, wouldn’t bear scrutiny themselves.

So, to prove oneself NOT a kiddie-fiddler, one must not denounce kiddie-fiddling by Romanist priests?
Hmm😕
I suppose that, er, logic makes absolute sense if one is a Romanist kiddie-fiddler himself…and wants to conceal his kiddie-fiddling.
This must be a new approach to cover-up in the Romanist Church.
You guys never give up, do you ‘Father’?
You will have your kiddie-fiddling, come Hell or highwater.

Might I suggest a similarity between the self-justification of the abuser and reactions to the Corona virus? There is an absence of accountability. Praying the rosary or traipsing relics through the streets are no adequate response to either Corona or the Church’ s appalling record on sexual and physical abuse of the vulnerable: what is required is admission of responsibility. Just as abuse has a recognizable pattern, so does the depressing recurrence of diseases and viruses in the modern world. Consider HIV, BSE and CJD, SARS, Bird flu, Ebola – you name it: all have their origins in animals which were misused by being captured and eaten, or – in the case of BSE – being fed to other herbivores. Our abuse of the planet and fellow creatures will destroy us. Yet, Magna is right, as soon as we can, it will be business as usual. The Church, along with all organized religion, is both useless and irresponsible in preventing all forms of abuse. I draw your attention to the following thought-provoking article to which some idiot will inevitably respond with what about abortion? i have little optimism.

Dear Bishop Buckley
This forum is a very valuable one because it is the only one where Christians display uncensored their hate and vitriol, refusal to face the problems of their own communities and so on. I find the attitude towards Magna Carta particularly revealing: regardless of what you think of him, there is no excuse for the abuse levelled at him.
In fact this blog may even be therapeutic because Christians are faced nowhere else with such direct feedback on their behaviour.
You may like to consider an hourly rate, although the fact that relatively few of your patients have any insight is not because of you.

Exactly. The continual accusations of being drunk, etc, are abuse pure and simple.
The source of these insults is very obvious because of the repeated comments about the hours that he posts. Anyone but the clergy would understand that real people have to go to work. If they are lucky they have to be there for nine, shift workers will start much earlier and may also work in the evening.
But this is turned into abuse and baseless allegations.
