CORONAVIRUS HAS “OBLITERATED” MULLINGAR PARISH’S INCOME.

Mullingar parish has admitted that the Coronavirus crisis has “obliterated” its income – and left it fearful of not being able to pay the bills.

“We have made big cutbacks in spending, but we still have to run the parish and maintain the vital service we offer to our community and the local hospital,” Fr Derek Darby, parish administrator, told The Westmeath Examiner today.

The parish employs a number of staff – but depends completely on the voluntary support and generosity of people each week in the offertory collection to fulfill its obligations to its staff and priests, and to pay the parish’s bills.

“We have already received calls from parishioners who are mindful the parish’s working reserves are now under pressure, wanting to donate or make a contribution,” said Fr Darby.

Stressing that he was aware that in these uncertain times everyone is now under financial pressure, he said since Masses are suspended and the church locally has no income source, any donations will be gratefully received.

“We would appreciate your support,” he said.

There are three ways of supporting the parish:

(i) Weekly envelopes: continue to drop in the weekly envelope to the cathedral. There will be a secure donation box inside the main door of the cathedral.

(ii) Credit Transfer

Credit Transfer to Mullingar Cathedral Current Account

Please include your name or envelope number (if you have one) as a reference so the church can acknowledge your donation.

(iii) Cheque or Cash Donation

Donations can be left into the parish office or the cathedral in the secure donation box inside the main door of the cathedral.

Donations received by post will be acknowledged by email/phone call.

PAT SAYS

The Roman Catholic Church is one of the wealthiest entities in the world.

At a time when are worried about the possibility of millions dying world wide I think it is disgraceful that a parish is worried about its collections and canvassing donations.

We are living through times where millions might die.

And the PP of Mullingar is worried about his bank balances going down.

This is disgraceful selfishness.

Let him sell his ostentatious cathedral to be turned into a night club or casino and give the money to the poor, the sick and the dying.

DAILY MASS FROM THE ORATORY

Daily Mass, 7 days a week, will be broadcast from The Oratory at 12 noon everyday from tomorrow 23.3.2020.

Not a bit, and the sooner other leeching RC organisations are diminished forcing them to use the wealth they’ve built up the better.

Fr Derek Darby, parish administrator of Mullingar parish has been reported as saying that the present crisis has “obliterated” its income since it depends completely on weekly offertory collection.
Is that report correct? Given the standards of present-day Irish journalism today you cannot be sure. But if it then I’m astonished and it needs to be investigated.
I’d have expected the bulk of any church’s donation-income today to be by monthly Standing Order, particularly after the allegations and doubts that have been circulating in recent years regarding Cavan Cathedral – Proverbs18 verse 17, “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.”

I agree with your comments, Bishop Pat.
Romanist parasites have lived off the people, in more ways than one, for far too long. I have zero sympathy with any Romanist parish with the brass neck to whinge about income shortfall in these, or in any other times.
Romanist parasites have always considered themselves a cut above everyone else, ontologically special, and far too exceptional to do such mundane things as work for a living.
If these men and women had to put food on their tables, provide their own homes and cars, etc instead of pressuring people with canonical ‘grave obligation to support their pastors’, it would automatically weed out unsuitable types for priesthood, and religious life. The Michael Jack Byrnes and the Sean Jones of this world.
I hope the institutional Romanist Church falls apart in this lunacy surrounding Coronavirus.
But it probably wont happen; not entirely: the Cathbots will always rally around ‘Father’.
It is interesting to note that not one Romanist parasite died of hunger during the Irish Famine. Not one of these losers. You’d have thought people would have seen through them for the charlatans, spongers and wastrels they are. But no; they didn’t.
Today, however, is different. Romanist parasites are under pressure on several fronts, not least for the sexual abuse of children and adults, its ongoing cover up, its finanancial corruption, and now exposure to the fact that even the Cathbots are ceasing to feed the Romanist Parasite with ‘donations’.
I can’t think of a demographic more despised today than the Romanist parasite. 😆

I forgot to reflect on the words of Mullingar Parish: that it provides not just a service to its community, but a ‘vital’ service.
‘Vital’ comes from the Latin word ‘vita’ (‘life’).
It’s not usual for a parasite to tell its host (i.e. ‘the one it lives off’) that its presence is vital to the host. In other words, that the host could not live without it.
There’s hubris for you.😕

Pat seems to need you like a virus to pour out hatred, evil, racism. All that is dark and vile in a human being is solidified deeply, like cement in Magna’s DNA. Now I must go and join with a caring parish group to visit the old, lonely and sick, (with their permission and of their families) of which there are many in our parish. Food parcels have been donated by parishioners and these will be given to needy families. There are great, Christ-like acts of kindness being carried out in our parish, inspired by the leadership of our P. Priest. These days are times for love, care, kindness, generosity – the kind of qualities which build up our community. The haters are destructive and morally bankrupt and dead at this time of crisis. Keep up your HATING – O dark, destructive ones..Gid loves a giver nit a hater. Don’t you realise how irresponsible you, and your merry, self-congratulating little band of self-publicising narcissists really are? Do you care?

YOU SHOULDN’T BE GOING ANYWHERE NEAR THESE PEOPLE AT A TIME LIKE THIS.

I’m thinking now of Martin Luther. In his 95 Theses, he asked why the pope (Leo X), if he could empty Purgatory for money (through the sale of indulgences), didn’t instead do it for love.

I believe this Priest in Mullingar should not have said anything re: finances. Also, it is disgraceful to use, yet again, led by Pat and Magna, the tragedy of the virus to take swipes of nasty, horrible judgments about priests and the Church. Any crisis gives both of them a moment to kick the Church into the ground. Rather ironic since Pat was literally begging for finances yesterday to set up a service to broadcast his mass! That aside, my concern is for the many small businesses in the parish where I work. Sadly, so many are closed and many will loose their jobs. Thankfully we have a good charity fund and already a number have asked for help. People who are visiting our Church each day are donating money and food parcels for the needy in our parish. I know this is replicated in many parishes. That priest misjudged his comments, sadly, but it should not be an opportunity for anyone to smash the Church or to elicit vile, vicious hatred against priests. This is a “disgraceful selfishness”…to use Pat’s wirds. Just wondering if Pat is out and about visiting, helping or setting up a good store? Just wondering too if those Magna types, still under the duvet, ever do anything useful for the well being of others? Let’s stop the virus of hatred and vengeance against clergy: Let’s pray for one another: let us at least try to be Christ-like today.

Magna is under no duvet. So cease ‘wondering’ about me what you dearly want to believe.
It helps, doesn’t it, to see me in a negative, shameless light? It detracts from what I say, but what you do not want to acknowledge. It’s the coward’s way of dealing with unpleasant realities.
I’m not surprised that you should call ‘disgraceful’ anyone who would ‘smash’ (hyperbole for ‘criticise’) the ‘Church’ and ‘priests’. The tautology here reveals your precious, clericalist mindset: you believe that priests alone constitute the Church, and that they, for the most part, should be above criticism. You’re an anacronism: a blast from an increasingly risible past.
I reckon you are a priest yourself, and quite elderly, with fixed, traditional, and highly elevated (self-aggrandising) notions of priesthood; priests like you repulse me most of all.
By all means, pray for one another. But, in truth, this is just another distraction, isn’t it? A convenient cloak under which to conceal more inconvenient truths about the institutional Church? It’s a form of rebuke: attempting to silence people by making them feel guilty for not praying instead of making valid criticism of the institutional Church, at such time as this, for failing to liquidise at least some of its considerable assets rather than attempt to scrounge more money from ever hard-pressed Catholics.
As I said, your kind of priest repulses me most of all.

Bishops and priests and the Church have only themselves to blame for the lack of trust in them, and the cautious way in which people now view them. They have brought this on themselves by their sinful actions in the past, not least the abuse crisis and coverup, and until such time as they redeem themselves it is only right and proper to treat them with suspicion. As for + Pat, he is not perfect, but what you see is what you get. There is an integrity in that. And I can trust that.

No, I haven’t changed my mind about the Coronavirus Pandemic. What I have advised is a SENSIBLE precaution, not scaremongering. I suppose the nuance was just too subtle for you to appreciate.

This lunacy around the virus was totally unnecessary. If it goes on too long, lockdown will result in meltdown…of international and domestic economies, banking, commerce, etc.Suicide rates will rise as people lose businesses, jobs, homes, and so on.

Welfare systems will come under unsustainable pressure. There will be social unrest, increasing anger. Populations will want scapegoats.

IF…IF it all goes on too long.

And it was completely avoidable, at least for the most part.

90% or higher of any national population would suffer only mild or moderate symptoms IF any of them contracted Coronavirus. So by isolating only the roughly 10% of each population at risk of suffering more serious symptoms (and, possibly, death from secondary complications) for the duration of the pandemic, national governments could have handled this much more easily than trying to control entire populations.

No need, then, for lockdown, along with the risk of ecconomic and social meltdown.😕

It will be interesting to see how dioceses / parishes act towards their employees. More than every, given the lack of clergy, more and more non sacramental functions in the Church are done by laypeople, who are increasingly employed. So, will diocese and parishes do what is the right thing and support them and continue employing and paying them, according to the various government schemes now available ? I have my doubts. I think they will find way of sloughing off people with all sorts of excuses. My exception is that they will do what suits them, rather than the right thing, and in contravention of their own social justice teaching. Such are the times that people like me have a cynical and untrusting view of what clergy and the Church will do, but they only have themselves to blame for that breakdown in trust.
Just one more point: Certainly where I live by and large clergy are still presumed to be self-employed, and only office holders, rather than employees of the Church. The Church has used this argument to distance itself from responsibility for abusing clergy and to distance itself from any hint of direct or vicarious responsibility. If that is so, then it will be interesting to see if the Church begins to lay off its clergy – after all, it claims not to employ them ? You could see Father not receiving his stipend and told to go on unemployment benefits ! But, I don’t think they will do that ! Father will be protected and cosseted. The other Church employees will bear the brunt. The Church looks after its own ! Watch that space ! As, I say, they only have themselves to blame for people like me thinking like this. They have completely undermined any right to expect any trust from us.

The big argument for church-buildings being exempt from Property Taxes has always been that they are public buildings and available to the Civil Authority in times of crisis.

At least 28 priests in northern Italy have died from COVID-19

Italian dioceses surrounding Milan have reported the deaths of 30 priests during the coronavirus outbreak.
Avvenire, the Italian newspaper owned by the Italian bishops conference, attributes at least 28 of these priests’ deaths to COVID-19, and also notes two additional cases: that of Fr. Guido Mortari, who died of pneumonia before he could get tested, and Fr. Giorgio Bosini, who had a serious underlying medical condition.
All but three of the priests were over the age of 70, and more than half were over 80 years old. The youngest priest to die from coronavirus, Fr. Andrea Avanzini of the Diocese of Parma, was 54 years old.
Eleven of the deceased priests come from the Diocese of Bergamo, where at least 15 other priests have been hospitalized, according to the local bishop
Pope Francis called the bishop of Bergamo on March 18 to express his closeness to the many who are suffering in the diocese.
“Pope Francis has promised that he will carry us in his heart and in his daily prayers,” Bishop Francesco Beschi of Bergamo told his diocese in a video message following the phone call.
“The Holy Father was very affectionate, showing his paternal closeness to me, to the priests, to the sick, to those who care for them and to our whole community. He wanted to ask for details on the situation that Bergamo is experiencing, on which he was very informed,” the bishop said.

You guard me from the foe

The above comments about monitoring are ridiculous.
Monitoring and control are done with paedophiles. In a case where an adult man has legal sexual urges towards other adults he is only in the same boat as every other adult. If he can’t control them then because they are not towards vulnerable people, he doesn’t get monitoring.
He should probably not be in ministry in a church which requires its clergy to be celibate though.

For trolls claiming no priests died in the famine and citing the fictional character Bull McCabe:

“ ……. Indeed, the priests’ reports of evictions, wailing voices, bodies in the streets etc., make for harrowing reading. Priests were constantly on calls to the sick in their parishes – one priest in Co Limerick asserted that he made between 200 and 300 pastoral visits to the dying in one week in March 1849. No Catholic wanted to die without receiving the Last Rites of the Church. Priests put their lives at risk answering calls to attend the dying. Over 40 priests died off famine fever in 1847 ……” (historian Fr Donal Kerr SM writing in the IT in 1997).

Is a priest historian a reliable expert on priests issues?

If 40 priests a year died in the Famine how does that compare with twi million dying and two million emigrating?

Just asking?

Like

The late Donal Kerr was a great historian and, if his research had lacked the critical distance demanded of an academic historian, other historians, who are not priests, would have shredded his theses.

As regards the seeming small number of priests who died, this could be because priests, at that time in Ireland, were quite few. Indeed, the number of “practicing” Catholics was not numerous either.

I’d bet you eagerly sought out that information in the almost salivating hope you could trump that Magna bastardo on this blog. You did, didn’t you? And when you discovered it… Oh! The frisson of anticipatory smugness that must have coursed through your ageing, flabby flesh at the thought of my utter humiliation. Magna the Know-All shown up at last!
Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but if you re-read my post at 7.58 a.m., you’ll find I said that no Romanist parasite died of ‘HUNGER’ during the Irish Famine.
I mentioned nothing about their dying of fever.😕
I was aware that some priests did die of fever. But they did so with full bellies, so to speak.

THE Catholic Church “took advantage of the prevailing destitution to increase its land holdings” during the Famine, according to an editorial in the current issue of the respected British Catholic weekly, The Tablet.

It also notes that Irish landowners, “some of them Catholic”, were “among the indifferent”.

It says: “Many Irish farmers made money from the export of wheat from Ireland to England; some evicted their tenants, knowing they had nowhere to go and neither food nor work to sustain them.”

Like

It’s also worth remembering that the RCC I Ireland embarked on a massive church building programme during the famine- bricks instead of food.

Like

Ah yes, but, it is important to remember that while relatively few priests died, their deaths are of more moment, since God is dependent on them to confect the Blessed sacrament, as the cure d’Ars says.
And obviously the church building could not have been postponed, because otherwise there would have been nowhere to hold Benediction.
Do try to get your priorities right.

If that is true it explains the draught of wisdom in the clergy. They have no fear of God at all 😪

Masses and other devotions are being live-streamed. The churches are open daily for private prayer. Confessions are being heard observing the social distancing requirements. Priests are available for the sick and the dying whilst observing precautions that will prevent spread of the virus. Let us pray for one another and stop lacerating one another. Maybe you could take some leadership and initiative, Pat, by preventing your blog being the bubbling cauldron of vitriol and spite it now is, on a daily basis? We are going to be locked and the trolls like “Magna Carta” will have even more time on their hands than usual.

Folks, do you not know that fighting and arguing with MagnaTroll is as productive as shouting at the tv when someone you don’t like is on? Yes, it’s like shouting at Bumbling Bojo or Leroy Varadkar when they’re on the box. They can’t hear you. What you’re saying won’t make a jot of a difference. At least with a politician though you can maybe tweet something to them. With MagnaTroll you are dealing solely with some nutcase’s obnoxious “projection”. In short, you haven’t a hope in hell of meaningfulalt engaging so, in these trying times, when life is precious, go and do something life giving and worthwhile, instead of literally screaming into the dark.

5.55: MOURNFUL MICK has awakened from his slumber to join Mags in using the CORONAVIRUS crisis to attack the church and clergy. Are you in a parallel universe, Mourny Mick? No one, no priest or anyone I know who is helping others is being careless or irresponsible. All are ultra cautious. All are following guidelines and directives. No one should be so reckless in endangering anyone else. You use the argument of potentially infecting someone as a resson to stay under your duvet. Any act of kindness and help being given to others is done responsibly. Stop spreading the lie that priests don’t care or are acting carelessly. Does your smarmy, cynical comment apply to Pat who offered to give his services of care for others? Pat is well intentioned as are most priests in their parishes. Why the necessity for your cold, put down cynicism? R.S.V.P.

The class ‘higher’ education you ‘picked up’ in the UK mustn’t have covered the advanced linguist principle that a plural subject requires a plural verb, whereas the ‘mediocre’ Irish education you would have received surely did. But you must have been absent that day. So you can still blame the system.
The irony of including the word ‘intelligent’ in the same sentence is likely lost on you.
