On the next day, the French blog of the seminary, which has a German-speaking and a French-speaking section, clarified that the priest first infected was from Italy.“The whole seminary has been in strict confinement for a week, because the disease spreads rapidly. A dozen priests and seminarians are showing flu-like symptoms, forcing us to completely reorganize schedules and services. Cooks, cleaners, secretaries … we have to do everything by ourselves, but everyone is generous and adapts without difficulty.

”The community is using the quarantine to meditate on the meaning of life.“Life is short and fragile, and if one is worried about one’s health, one must be even more concerned about one’s salvation. The invisible threat of illness stimulates us to trust more in God, and to increase our prayers and penances even more,” the French blog wrote.Earlier this week, the government prohibited gatherings of any kind in churches, meaning the public is now no longer able to participate in Mass in Wigratzbad.

This year, 90 seminarians are preparing for the priesthood in Wigratzbad. The community received 30 new seminarians last fall.Meanwhile, 59 religious sisters in Italy have been tested positive for coronavirus.

Just outside of Rome, one convent of the Daughters of St. Camillus, composed of 40 sisters, was isolated. Additionally, 19 members of the Angelic Sisters of St. Paul, also located outside of Rome, were diagnosed with coronavirus.

It would seem to me that these seminarians and nuns would have been better at home isolating with their families.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that iur death rate will rise and be a great tragedy for the bereaved. Our nation is grateful for the wonderful dedication of our health care and medical personnel. Their dedication is inspirational, even if It’s their chosen work. They deserve our support. It’s very sad to read about elderly religious in communities who may not have families or relatives to stay with. Their convents are their homes. This virus is lethal. Let us pray for one another. Itv s a critical time for our country, for our world and for ourselves. God be with us all. Mass and Rosary will give deep spiritual comfort. Pat, so far you have offered only cynicism. Horrible. Whilst there are the exceptions, by far the most likely to die are the very elderly and those with serious underlying health conditions. Many of these are likely to die in the normal course of events in the near future. CV might be a contributory cause, but for many the main cause is naturally coming to the end of their lives, or because they have a condition that may well have caused to them to die anyway. The figures, seen retrospectively, will be very interesting and I believe will give a different perspective to the apocalyptic view that is currently around.

So, people like the FSSP, and perhaps other traditionalist groups, prefer to not take communion because now they are asked not to receive on the tongue, and presumably believe that they should continue to have such a principled stand on not receiving in the hand, that they deny themselves communion ? Isn’t it ridiculous that groups like this get so hung up on issues that they then cut their nose off to spite their faces ? You can’t help asking what the good Lord would be saying about these people who are so stuck in their trench that they can’t see beyond their navels ?

There is no vaccine for covid19. There is for influenza. What about people unable to be given treatments for cancer,etc, operations postponed to due hospitalizations as a result of CV-19. What about suicides, as a result of financial issues; mental health difficulties; medical staff succumbing to the virus due to hospitals dealing with covid 19 admissions.etc.
Not all deaths occur among the elderly with underlying conditions.

Being on the ground as a priest (not now) I know many families will be challenged where there are already difficulties, separated families, children and young people who are vulnerable, people with depression, j9b losses and the financial crisis. So God is no better than Machiavelli? And seriously, good is dependent on evil?

Moreover, what happens post-Apocalypse? Will God destroy the Devil now that he is no longer dependent on Lucifer, and his minions, to help him bring about good?

As for human suffering, the author speaks of the need in these times for doubled prayers and penances. Again, seriously? So God is exceptionally flint-hearted and cannot be moved unless people make themselves suffer?

It’s funny, while I don’t agree with this view I was thinking it was good that at least here is a go at trying to reconcile a major disease with the theology of a good and all-wise God?
My own opinion is that these kinds of events are the proof that there isn’t a god of the type above, however I find at least an attempt to reconcile the two things better than the pious platitudes which have been said so far. The other problem is of course that praying in this situation is a false positive because there is no way of proving what effect if any, praying has on the virus.
What I find most dangerous is the idea mentioned yesterday that praying changes God’s mind. When people still die from the virus this is setting up those who pray for an accusation of lacking faith and thus trapping them further in the faith trap.

We are all very concerned about the projected death rate from CV Anything under twenty-thousand in the UK would be a ‘good result’, said the Chief Medical Officer the other day. I’ve been thinking, however, about how we get upset and anxious about some things, and not so about other things that are arguably even worse. So, for example, in England and Wales last year almost 25 per cent of pregnancies were terminated, admittedly some early, and some late. In 2018 that was just over 200,000 abortions.

Now, I am not suggesting that we should do nothing about CV or not have a concern for the many people who will die from it. I just wonder why we accept with little discussion or reflection 200,000 abortions each and every year ? I don’t think of myself as hard line on abortion, and I have a great compassion for women who find themselves in very difficult circumstances such that they consider abortion as a possible solution. I understand all the arguments about women’s rights, about autonomy etc. I just still feel uncomfortable with this rate of abortions. But we never bother about it as a nation, really. But, a one off possible 20,000 death rate, mostly, if not exclusively older people, many with underlying health conditions, is something that we are greatly exercised over, and will take drastic steps to minimise.

Well, how else do you expect to be treated by a feudal, medieval, grey economy that wants to keep control over you by keeping you tied to them even in retirement ? Retired clergy receive grants from the diocese, which is like charity, and hardly enforceable in law. Whereas, a proper pension from the State or a pension provider has the rigour and force of law behind it. I feel for these priests who have given loyal service, and have not been able to provide independent pension provision for themselves or to save money, or probably to even buy a property (most will be living in Church properties). I’m afraid Nichols will have to do better than this. His cashflow from the parishes might have dried up, his investments stalled, but the diocese will have considerable reserves which they, like everybody else, is going to have to harness. If he treats the retired priests with the contempt and lack of care which this report suggests, then he is going to have problems with his active priests who will be thinking about how they can avoid being reliant completely in old age and retirement on the likes of Nichols and Westminster. Any trust they have in him will quickly evaporate (and it appear they don’t have much trust in him currently and many detest him for him habitual ambition, hauteur and contempt of them). I bet his house in Chiswick will still be available to him, and he will continue to live in some degree of gentility and comfort when he retires soon. Perhaps he should put that nice property on the market and use the several million £s to tide over the retired clergy during this period ? Will he ? Of course not ! But watch that space. Just remembered ! What happened to that big drive they had a couple of years ago to help pay for retired clergy ? Where has that gone ?

Pat, I hope you were listening Taoiseach Vradakar tonight. Now is the time for all of us to stand together in solidarity in our kindness of sentiment, care and concern. As he spoke I could feel a darker cloud hang over us, darker than the grey sky of today. Surely, a thoughtful, reflective blog is now required to offer support and comfort, prayers that will sustain us in hope. There are many, many people much more fearful tonight. I have 2 retired priests – both 85 – and they have been great workers up to recently. Now I am concerned about them. I cannot now visit 3 very sick family members as their immune systems are low. Many elderly cannot now be visited with Holy Communion. You too will feel the effects of the new restrictive measures. Pat, can I plead with you to suspend narratives that are cynical, condemnatory and unkind. Can we for once be united in a common purpose to support, help and show kindness at this time. None of us know the direction of the unfolding of this virus. I wish you God’s blessings.

Shame on you Pat: you have lost all respect and integrity in continuing to allow Magna pour out his horrible nastiness on any person. It seems to me that you, Pat, depend on him for ratings. Shameful and sad. Are you not capable of human or Christ like goodness of heart at this juncture of our history. My neighbouring parish for which I also have a responsibility has a CORONA VIRUS death. The family are distraught and I could only offer them comfort over the phone. We will undoubtedly have many similar moments soon. This virus brings layers of grief than the normal flu related death. These families do not deserve the belittlement and pain of idiots and boors like Magna. Pat, respect yourself and your blog at this time.
