ENGLISH / IRISH BISHOPS READY TO DUMP ON PRIESTS?

I had a call from an English priest today to say that his diocese are writing to priests and quizzing them about their savings, assets and benefits.

The priest is quite certain that his diocese is doing this so that they can deduct monies from priest’s salaries and the pensions of retired priests.

We were told on the Blog the other day that Elsie Nichols has sent an even more scary letter to his priests.

There seems to be a plan afoot in England, and possibly Ireland, to find reasons to give serving and retired priests less money.

There is also a suggestion that some bishops are going to stop paying Private Health Insurance for priests.

Furthermore, there is talk about removing retirement homes outside the diocese for retired priests and forcing those priests to live in diocesan presbyteries with serving priests.

There will also be a cut back on paid sabbaticals.

There are two kinds of RC bishop – bishops who take the care of their priests very seriously – and those bishops who bully their priests and treat them with contempt.

Funnily enough, the scary John Charles McQuaid showed great care for priests – especially priests in trouble.

I really could not care less about the ‘plight’ of retired Romanist priests.

They have private health insurance??? Says a lot about their exceptionalism and privilege, because most of their former parishioners could not afford such insurance; for them there was nothing but ever-lengthening NHS queues. But not for ‘Father’.

I won’t say exactly what I think of these parasites, scroungers, and moochers, but the first word of the phrase rhymes with ‘luck’.

Pat, as a retired man myself I would be worried. It’s hard for a man like myself but I know so many people having it hard. When I see what the bishops are at Its bad all together because they are being hard on us. Sorry.

This is not new. Elsie started culling clergy years ago. Pushing them into shared Presbyteries, making them rely on State benefits. Heartless minx. Now the other heartless clerics wearing funny hats on their heads have grasped Elsie’s idea and think it’s a good chance to save cash. They are culling.

I suppose the Chiswick pad will be classed as a shared presbytery when + Vin moves in ? Him and the nun ? And maybe a priest secretary for the sake of decency ? Or will he move in a couple of retired priests he’s turfed out of the retirement lodging and put on short rations ?

Hold on a minute! Shared presbyteries generally do not mean a tower block on a sink estate, but usually a very nice and comfortable large house with every amenity and comfort built in – all provided for these “Jack Hacketts” for nothing. By state benefits, you mean the state pension, which is what a lot of us have to live on anyway – and pay the gas bill out of it. Get stuffed, Father – you are at last sharing the lives of your people!

Pat. My brother who is a Priest in Lancaster, UK has been looked after well by his Bishop. Priests there have been told to take
£1k a month from the Parish account to cover living expenses, plus the same amount as last year they received from Easter offerings. I think that is the amount Parishioner’s gave to last year’s Easter offertory collection that goes to clergy in his Diocese. This will really help him, so good news there at least.

A thousand a month for pocket money + Easter and Christmas offerings is pretty good going. I don’t believe that Father has to worry about paying Council Tax, utilities and travel out of this, let alone household maintenance costs or even food – which can be sneaked under the wire of parish expenses. I’m not impugning your brother’s personal integrity, Liam, as clearly he just stands here as a generic type, but anybody with experience of clergy life-style knows how the system works to Father’s advantage – particularly with a tame parish council. Petrol “expenses” can usually be turned into a nice little earner.

I suppose that they will be asking priests to give them a copy of their tax return, which should be confidential. So, I question whether they have a legal right to do this, and somebody should challenge it as an intrusive invasion of personal privacy.

I would ask the bishop and the vicar general to publish their own tax returns before they ask for anybody else to do so. I’m sure that the likes of Nichols and others will have very nice pots of money stored away in investments etc.

Isn’t there are line in the bible about the labourer being worthy of his hire ?

Anybody want to do a list of characters and their traits for the English, Welsh and Scottish bishops ? For example:

Westminster / Nichols – ambitious, cruel, autocratic, unloved…
Southward / Wilson – untested, not a bundle of fun….
Birmingham / Longley – nice, kind, but pretty ineffective….
Liverpool / McMahon – bumptious, over confident….
Cardiff / Stack – dunno, but definitely not Welsh !…
Edinburgh / Cushley – Roman, prissy, quietly ruthless…

Longley is a nice man, but I am pretty disappointed in him. He has handed a major parish, All Souls’, Coventry over to the Ordinariate. You might well ask what the history of the “Anglican patrimony” is in that parish which had paid for by the Catholic poor precisely to reverse the Anglican experiment. A few weeks ago before lockdown, the appalling Keith Newton turned up and gave over his sermon to talking about himself and how unfair it was that he wasn’t a bishop, even though he dresses as one. Just what Coventry needs! Thanks for that, Norah.

Maybe Newton isn’t a bishop because he’s married ?! If he wants to belong to the RCC for whatever reasons he has, then he has to accept the rules of the RCC, and one of them is that there are no married bishops. Tough ! If he wants to be a bishop, then he should go back to the Anglican Church with his wife and he can get a “real” pointy hat there ! I’ve never understood the alacrity with which the RCC has so readily taken in all these ex-Anglicans, and especially the Ordinariate ones. So many of them are trouble. Especially the bitchy, gin soaked, queeny metropolitan ones.

Absolutely spot on @11:52! They have brought their own divisive pick-and-choose which bits you like with them. Just like the Anglo-Catholics they are, they continue to operate in their own little enclave and bus around the country attending each other’s “Solemn High Masses” with Newton dressed up pretending to be a bishop. He even claims the privilege of the “seventh candle”, though not stuffed up his own arse where it belongs.

Hate to say this but I think Wilson is a good man. He’s dealt with stuff when he was looking after Leeds, is very pastoral to his clergy, likes a laugh, is down to earth and is probably the best of the Archbishops. He’s got great energy.

Amy was very good to Rory Coyle, Bp Pat, bent over backwards for him it seems, a flat in London and £25K a year by all accounts. I expect Rory will now be classified as a “key worker” delivering front line services. You couldn’t make it up!

Are you suggesting + Amy is bottom and Rory is top ? How very…..of you ! I guess if Rory finds that the readies are curtailed, he will hot foot it back to Armagh with new found faith and compliance. When times are hard, you’ve got to do what it takes to keep the wolf from the door.

There you are then. Consider that many people in London, also earning say 25K, have to spend up to two thirds of that on rent, and Rory gets a flat free – presumably not in a shared presbytery lest he contaminates it with the curse of homosexuality (ha, ha!) – you get an idea of clerical privilege, quite contrary to the clergy hard luck stories being peddled on this blog. And why are errant priests always sent to London, New York or California? These places are awash with priests – though some of them very dodgy indeed. I am sure there is much good they could do in Teeside or Wolverhampton.

Once all this quietens down and things get back to something approximating to normality (as they will) and the likes of + Nichols and + Treanor are able to resume their travels to Rome and Brussels, it will be interesting to see if they economise and travel cattle class rather than opting for business class. Especially if, as is being reported, they have put their priests and retired priests on short rations. I think I know what will happen. Business class it will be !

It will be interesting to see what the new ‘normal’ will be. I suspect less money will be spent on brass knobs, holidays in the sun, fine wines, and jet setting to Paris, Amsterdam,
Brussels or Rome. The baa baas won’t be footing the bill. They won’t be able to afford to foot their bills.

10.45: Indeed, life will be different but your cynicism seems to suggest that clergy will be more affected. I have no difficulty accepting a smaller salary. I do worry about everyone, especially families who are under huge stress and anxiety, those who lost theur jobs and businesses that may not recover. My struggles are minor compared to all families and business owners and to the wonderful healthcare and medical staff who are incredible. I feel.too for community and family carers. Let’s put them first. Trying to manufacture and make up (lies) about what priests are/might say – all speculation – is mischief making. It’s ignorant and untrue. Cynics are useless in times of trials.

Palm Sunday in this blog is rated interesting – I suspect all commentators, led by Pat the Mighty One would, instead of throwing branches of Palm before Jesus as he entered Jerusalem, would instead throw boulders, rocks and engage in mockery and ridicule. The words expressed so far today suggest.nithing else. A blog bereft of Christianity. And yet, Pat will celebrate the Eucharist today but will stand outside the passion narrative where he will find a place for all clergy but himself. The enemies, mockers and scoffers in the passion can be any of us but Pat is perfect, the rest of the clergy doomed for hell. God protect us from harm, hatred, vengeance, vindictiveness, anger, jealousy. Pour, O Lord, into our hearts the grace of Jesus, your Son.

Get over yourself at 10:43 with your self-serving indignation. The commentary on this blog over the last couple of days has been pretty incisive – not to say prophetic. Just as Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was a counter demonstration to a Roman triumph, so the clerical shysters, crooks and charlatans of our own day are held up and found wanting. In answer to your question at 3:21 pm, no I did not, and may I point out that, had Jesus entered Jerusalem in order to point out all the good being done by the political and religious establishment of his day, he wouldn’t have got himself arraigned and crucified. It’s good you are rattled by this blog out of your smug complacency, Father, so do please carry on reading and carry on getting annoyed, and the penny might eventually drop that you serve a corrupt system. It is disgustng at this time of health crisis they are more focused on this than finding ways to support people !

It is only natural that priests will have to accept a smaller salary and this is as it should be. Circumstances will force this to happen. I suggested to a group of colleagues that we each make a contribution, within our means, and give it to St. v. De Paul, Br. Kevin and the charity for the support of our health care workers. So far almost 40 have responded and the donations are superb and as we connect by WhatsApp, emails and texts, we will continue this project. It’s a small idea but one that will benefit the very needy. Since we are almost isolated and just officiating at funerals and unable to visit families in need, priests can draw upon our parish charity funds and disperse them through the local Gardai who are in touch with the alone and elderly. All is done legitimately.

11.53: I do not approve of Bishops treating their priests in any unkind or uncharitable way. That’s outrageous. I have always believed that bishops really don’t take care abou their priests. Any problems of a psychological nature are kept hidden from our bishops. I encountered much personal issues (loss, grief, burn out, emitional stress) that required professional therapy. I was abandoned by my bishop but thankfully 5 years on I have recovered with the help of a wonderful, kind counsellor/therapist. As for our salary: we will have to take a cut. Undoubtedly, but it is outrageous that our elderly priests might be treated with disdain by any Diocese.

Westminster Cathedral making a plaintiff appeal for money ! They want people to give by standing order and gift aid. Fair enough in normal times, but don’t they think that people have more important things to think about at the moment ? Sterling 2.6 million is the annual cost of running the place. I am absolutely sure that the diocese and the cathedral have much more than that stashed away somewhere. Why not spend some of that for the next few months ? At a time when ordinary people are having to think about how they are going to survive for the next few months and having to dip in to their own savings and go in debt, why is the cathedral in Westminster not looking to its own resources to get through the next few months ? Before anybody gives, they should ask to see the full financial statement / annual accounts for the diocese and the cathedral and check for themselves just how much they have salted away that they could use. And even if they don’t have huge amounts, how about going to the bank and getting a loan, just like the rest of us ? I’m sure there is more than enough collateral to support a bank loan ! Really, this just shows how out of touch the diocese and the clergy are with real life and real people. Rather than supporting people already in difficulty, they think it’s okay to coerce people in to things that they can’t afford, and yet not take the first step of spending their own coffers first. I note that Clergy House comes in to the equation. The Cathedral Fathers are, I am sure, carrying on their rather comfortable lives during all of this ! People will remember that when they and the nations are struggling, all they get from the church is them bleating about their finances ! It’s another example of how they don’t get it !

Don’t talk to me about Westminster Cathedral. I recall how the then Administrator, the highly unpleasant Mark Langham, got rid of the much loved Father Norman Brown, who had had a legendary ministry there, though blind, for decades. Norman was treated as a nuisance and packed off to a retirement home south of the river in a different diocese. It was very touching to read Charles Moore’s tribute to Norman, who had received him into the Church. No thanks to Langham or to the Cardinal – I cannot recall now whether it was Cormac or Elsie who allowed him to be treated so disgracefully.

The camera and microphone are on 24/7. The camera has an sd card which can produce recordings. I have not made any decisions about it yet.

I was in Noel Treanor’s palace one time doing a bit of work. The carpet was that thick it made you dizzy walking around on it. He went on a bit about the plans for the garden etc. This was in 2009 when the worst of the economic crisis was hitting. Surreal now.

I am wondering whether the national insurance contributions of secular clergy are paid. I imagine they are but have also heard tales of religious orders which do not pay for their members.
Assuming they are these men would presumably be entitled to a state pension in the UK.

Bishop Buckley, I have no confidence in Eamon Martin controlling or monitoring Stephen Wilson. He has been passed around like a yoyo with older Clergy. What would Stephen Wilson do to a 70 year old Priest.

Rory Coyle and Stephen Wilson are something out of a nightmare. Pat its beyond me why is Fr Michael Mullaney risking everything to shelter and protect Mr Wilson, it’s a similar story to the Kevin McElory intervention a few years back in Cork and Ross, Kevin like Wilson groomed their protectors offering many illcit favours worse than McCarrick’s carry on.
