IT’S AN AMAZING LIFE AND IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER.’

an interview with
Fr JP Lyttle

What were your misconceptions about Priesthood before discerning it?

Who inspired you on your journey?

When I first started to think about the priesthood, I wondered if I would be stifled, I wasn’t sure if the priesthood would give me enough opportunity to go out and explore life. Would I be restricted to the Church building and the presbytery? Also I wondered if I could manage the studies as I didn’t have a degree and my experience at school wasn’t exactly great.

As I would go to Mass week in and week out, it kind of remained routine until a newly ordained deacon arrived in my parish which brought everything alive for me, this led me to explore my faith and come to know Jesus Christ who would change my life for ever.

My greatest worry when discerning my vocation was whether I could cope without a family of my own and if I could still keep my friends and the people I loved in my life?

What was your greatest worry when discerning your vocation?

What have been the highlights of living out your vocation?

The highlights of my ministry so far are celebrating daily Mass, celebrating my cousin’s wedding, baptising my nephew and helping the many people go home to Heaven, by absolving their sins and putting them at peace with God before they die, one of my main tasks as a hospital chaplain.

What would you say to someone else considering Priesthood?

I would say to you if you are considering following Jesus as a priest, give everything you’ve got. It’s an amazing life and it just keeps getting better! If you want meaning in your life then go down this road, it’s a beautiful adventure and you will see and experience things that will give you so much life and joy!

How is the lived reality of your vocation different to how you had perceived it?

My lived reality of being a priest is that I have more friends than I’ve ever had before, I am out all the time to share in people’s lives and my life couldn’t be richer with the various events and experiences I have the privilege to have!

How has living your vocation brought you joy?

Being a priest brings a great sense of joy because you get to share in people’s lives at every level. From birth to death and everything in between, sometimes in the same day! People give you access to their world not because of you but because you are Christ, you share in His Priesthood. It is a beautiful privilege.

What type of family does JP want?

Similar to a bottom, but a specific variety. A power bottom tends to be in charge, and feels most powerful when bottoming; the one who bottoms is the one on the “throne” so to speak, “taking” the Top.

For example, I imagine Magna Carta is a skilled power bottom in bed.

Is there a suggestion here that he incapacitates his intended victims ? Alcohol if the usual method of choice. Anything more sinister suggested here……?

Like

No. But some devout Catholiv young men are traumatised by their priest attempting to seduce them. Also, being a policeman, he knew what was going on was illegal and inappropriate.

Like

Pat, you really are looking obsessed. Yesterday you published a comment that said he tried his vocation on Papa Stronsay. I said that was untrue. You didn’t publish my comment. Will you do the same with this comment, or will you publish the truth? Isn’t that what you are after?

I thought we’d covered all this guff on a previous blog, Bp Pat? Has this ginger beer fallen by the wayside, or has he not??

Like

All the time and money wasted on him too, and all that heartache along the way. I just hope the ol’ ginger has the good grace to return all the ordination gifts he received from family and friends, although I suppose they can say ta-ta to any money gifts.

Like

Oh, how sick making having to listen to the likes of JP waxing lyrical about a priesthood that he has / had no intention of living out, because he was more interested in a parallel duplicitous life – in other words his life has been / is a lie. Look at any seminary / diocesan vocation site and you will find similar gushing testimonies of how wonderful it is to be a priest. Take them all with a pinch of salt. Scratch the surface and so many of these guys will be living a different story to the one that they want you and me to swallow.

The only credible line in the claptrap is “a newly ordained deacon arrived in my parish which brought everything alive for me.”

I do hope our dear bishops are reading this blog, and similar ones, and intuit that there is something amiss here, rather than just discounting things as the musings and whinings of the disgruntled few. There is a very strong, and important, theme of the loss of trust concerning clergy and the Church. It is real, it is there, and it is active, not just among those who visit this blog, but in so many other people who have connection with the Church and clergy. Bishops really do need to take this seriously. The undermining of the essential element of trust has the capacity to be existential for the Church. Without it there will be no Church. So they need to act, and act decisively, and soon. A suggestion – please do not do coverup and lack of transparency about situations such as JP Lyttle and others. Come out clearly and transparently and honestly and tell people what is happening, rather than hoping that things will go away. People are not stupid and resent being treated as though they are not worth being honest with. A few clergy like JP who are collateral damage along the way, mostly because of their own actions, is a small price to pay for the greater goal of retaining whatever residual trust remains among the laity.

The culture in the Church is secrecy. It’s not likely to change. Personally, I will never trust
a catholic priest again. The institutional church protects the institution along with those in the clerical fraternity. That’s proven beyond doubt within numerous reports from around
the world. Apologies from Popes are very shallow at this stage. The clergy and hierarchy cannot have it both ways. Why trust an institution that systematically covered up the rape
of children along with the abuse of vulnerable adults?
Regarding trust, I think that ‘horse has long bolted’.

Why do all these gay guys go on about sacrificing a wife and children?

It’s a smoke screen – and very disingenuous.

Shouldn’t Gorgeous be trying to get himself ordained priest before Dermo leaves ? Otherwise who is going to ordain him ? Would you take the risk ?

That is a question only he and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin can answer. I think he could get ordained if he wanted to. He has many supporters – both priests and bishops alike. He seems content in hospital ministry. I admire that he did not go down the road of trying to get ordained at any cost (like John Paul Lyttle and Sean Jones et al).

What a pious-sounding, self-sacrificial (esque😕) pile of abominable SHITE from Mr Lyttle.

Just imagine how bad YOU would have been MagnaTroll had you not been turfed out from Maynooth.

That would not surprise me. All these actively homosexual priests and seminarians recognise each other instantly and have opportunities on their trips and pilgrimages to run in to each other – and hey presto, they are connected sexually. So JP and Gorgeous will have linked up at various seminaries, pilgrimage sites, retreats, etc. enough to have had significant and carnal contact. Makes sense. Maybe they are still in touch, consoling each other about being found out and rumbled. Perhaps Rory is in touch as well….? I would not be surprised.

Like

Rory likes it down in Bournemouth on his days off from London. Hey Presto!! Bournemouth happens to be in Portsmouth diocese. How funny is that.

The only link is that the studied in the same college. They were not friends. Gorgeous had his group of friends and JP had his.

Oh you are so quick again @12.10pm to jump to the defence of gorgeous in all of this. We can all work it out for ourselves dearie. You are so naive – are you really that thick?

Like

@10.30am Dermo is not going to ordain Gorgeous before he departs. I can’t see the point of him being a Deacon within a hospital chaplaincy when you can’t anoint or hear confessions. A lay person can do what he is doing. I hear there is a possibility of him being ordained in Cork but certainly not for Dublin now.

Like

Oh no he won’t! Despite the various Sugar Daddies still in the thrall of Byrne, writing on this blog about how wonderful he is, he will NEVER be ordained by Diarmuid or any other bishop.

Like

Dermo is not a daftie and more cleverer than you will ever be. He’s not going to leave Dublin with that car crash waiting to happen in terms of gorgeous.

I think any man, not just a Catholic priest, who puts himself up as a celibate nowadays will not be believed, so why bother. People and parishioners alike are more likely to fall about laughing behind their back.

That old gay slut, Michael Voris, now describes herself as a “consecrated celibate.” (ROFL)

Like

I don’t want to be unduly harsh on or mean to the likes of JP, Gorgeous, Rory et al. But, there is something that has to be faced. They are not suitable for priesthood and ministry as a priest. I’m sorry. They have shown that they do not understand the obligations and promises they have made – no matter what we think about the rightness or wrongness of compulsory celibacy. They have shown that they are willing to transgress and in all likelihood given their sexuality would do so in the past. They would not have stopped unless they had been found out. There is no way that men like this who do not understand the import of what they have promised should be allowed to continue in the priesthood. I do not wish them ill, but for the sake of us all, for the sake of honesty, truth and integrity, they have to recognise that they are simply not suitable for this life, and they need to move on.

Like

Pat, I’m going to ask again – you talked about people with addictions needing “compassion” etc.

How do you reconcile what you do with this blog – and what you permit to take place on this blog – with your stated desire to be “compassionate”, to people like John Paul Lyttle and a number of others?

If they have “sex addictions” is publicly crucifying them on your blog – and allowing faceless trolls to mock them – “compassionate” towards them? Is it what Jesus Christ would do? Would Jesus approve?

Your refusal even to publish this question/challenge speaks volumes. It tells us all we need to know about you and your motives.

Like

Compassion is a two edged sword as shown in the life of Jesus. It consists of understanding and helping those who need and ask help and challenging those who equate and pretend. It is not compassion to give a drug addict the keys of the pharmacy. It is compassion to punch the addict to his all time low – where he hopefully will recognise his addiction and seek help.

Like

12.26: What a self serving, twisted understanding of compassion. You are so smug in this understanding that It’s unbelievable. Compassion literacy mean “to walk with”, ” to accompany”. A try compassionate human being, as a pastor especially, requires a totally non judgmental attitude,, a kind listening, a knowledge of appropriate therapy and a discerning heart to know when to refer someone for professional help. You completely misunderstand gospel compassion as lived by Jesus. When Jesus needed to be angry, he expressed it: when he was compassionate, he embraced people as they we’re, did not smash them into the ground d, gave hope, healing, mercy, understanding and the grace of new beginnings. I believe your macho compassion is just that, macho. The Good Samaritan, The Prodigal Son or Prodigal Father, The Woman in Adultery, The Lost Sheep…all parables about true compassion. Perhaps, Pat, a reading and a reflection on these might draw you back to CHRIST COMPASSION…which we all need to emulate.

Like

I think you are talking about a counsellor and not a priest.

The RC church teaches that in Confession the priest is a judex- JUDGE!

Like

FFS ! What addiction do these men have, tell me? Sex addiction ? Really ? No, they simply have a sense of expectation that they can have what they want, and fool everybody. They and others might plead an addictive personality for themselves, but the reality is that they are well able to control themselves if they want to. If not, then they need to have the integrity and honesty to recognise that they are not able to keep to promises and vows that they have freely taken. And, go elsewhere. Where they can indulge whatever predilections they might have to their hearts content. But, please do not tell me to be compassionate and understanding of these guys who are taking the piss !

Like

It’s a form of resistance, I suppose. It’s about naming a lineage of men who are queer outlaws and don’t fit into normative ideas about what it means to be gay these days.

Like

Pat

I think it is sad that you allow this constant trolling of M. Byrne. It seems very unfair. I hope your compassionate side will take action and not allow this to continue again and again.

Like

The irony is that Diarmuid’s inaction has caused more questions than answers. Gorgeous can blame him for this never ending story.

Like

So back to the topic of todays blog

How many seminaries and orders has John Paul Lyttle been in? It does seem excessive.

Like

1.45: Pat, you are confused. I can understand your confusion. Please, all priests are called to be compassionate as CHRIST is. My definition of compassion derives out of my own story and experiences and from my reflection on the gospels. Our compassion is not ever meant to judge, condemn or crush people. While we can help identify the many psychological conditions of people’s behaviour, you and I as professed followers of Christ must always practice Christ’s compassion, a compassion which is meant to rebuild, heal and lift people up not lower them to the ground.

I see Fr Paddy McCafferty has carried a monstrance through the streets of Ballymurphy. Would have liked to have seen that in Tigers Bay or up in Cregagh. The man is a total attention seeker and yes we all know about his history but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s a headline grabber. While we are on the subject I see Joe Gormley in Derry has gone quiet.

Paddy McClafferty is the king of attention seeking! It’s all about him! He will do anything to get on TV or the radio.

Did Paddy not categorically state he would never meet Pope Francis in Dublin because of clerical abuse and then ran along and met him anyway. I recall him giving loads of media interviews after it. I lost all respect for that man.

Like

8:31pm – I’m sure he won’t sleep knowing he has lost your “respect”.

I recall that he said the WMOF should be cancelled and the Pope shouldn’t come because of the McCarrick scandal. Other victims were of the same view.

He never said he wouldn’t meet the Pope. In the interview I read in the IT he expressed great affection for Francis.

He was later asked to meet the Pope and he did so with other victims, including Marie Collins, who is also highly critical of the institutional church’s handling of abuse.

Typical. They think of nothing but themselves. How come they don’t think of the common good, which they usually keep going on about, and be good citizens and leave the government and experts to decide when churches can open again ? Because, just like JP, Gorgeous, Rory, +Elsie, +Amy etc., they think they know better because of….? Yep, you got it…..ontological change which gives them superior insight and status, and the right to tell everybody else what to do, and to do what they want, which usually means something different to what they tell us they’re doing ! They need to get back in their boxes and realise that they simply do not hold sway anymore. We don’t listen to them anymore. I hope the Italian government tells them to go swing.

The UK Government have given the Churches permission for Requiem Mass for close family and Social Distancing in place.

However NONE of the UK Churches have started it yet which is so so sad.

At Least Dublin allows Requiem Mass for close family.

I wonder what Francis would say to that his Cardinal, Archbishops and Bishops not allowing Requiem Masses yet Priest are desperate to say them for the repose of the peoples soul.

Government say Places of Worship to close (except for funerals) two weeks ago.
