COMPLAINT AGAINST MC CAFFERTY

Good afternoon Bishop Buckley

I hope you do not mind me contacting you, I need to ask your advice.

I have elderly family living in the greater Ballymurphy Area, old vulnerable and deep rooted in their faith.

I am so concerned and worried about their health, for one reason, their Parish Priest Fr Patrick McCafferty is calling his parishioners out for confession.

2 very elderly people made their way on Saturday and stood in a queue so Fr Patrick McCafferty could hear their confession, as he sat on a chair behind the locked gates of Corpus Christie Church Belfast, no sign of protection of antibacterial to clean the locked gates as people held on to during their confession.

The week before Fr Paddy McCafferty was driven around the Ballymurphy Whiterock Westrock area in an open roof car so he could bless the houses and streets, and once again called he parishioners out, some standing for over an hour waiting for the car to go by.

Now in normal times this act would be welcoming and good, however we are in the middle of a global pandemic and being advised to Stay at Home.

On a personal note, I believe Fr Paddy McCafferty is seeking attention, The sacrament of confession is such a personal moment between God and the confessor, so why in under Gods name did Fr Patrick McCafferty allow the press and journalists/ photographers take photos of this precious moment. He himself posed for photos.

Who can I write to, who can I ask have him stop this selfish need for attention he is willing to sacrifice the health and lives of those parishioners who have come through so much in he history of Corpus Christie Church.

Maybe he has applied for the £10.000 grant, and showing he is working, ( could I find this out somewhere)

May I ask where do I turn to, to stop his dangerous behaviour of self seeking.

Possibly he is a good priest, possibly his heart is in the right place, but his self seeking need for the press and photographs to be in the news is scary.

I have asked my elderly family to stay at home, but they feel this will protect them, I’m afraid for the parishioners.

I think our correspondent raises very important points.

1. There is no need to be dragging old and vulnerable people to locked metal gates for Confession. I think we all know that the older we get  generally, the fewer sins we commit.

2. It was highly irresponsible to ask such people to queue.

3. The unavailability of hand sanitizer is a very big mistake.

4. And the question about having TV cameras and journalists to visit old people at Confession would lead one to think it was a press outing for Paddy.

5. And Magna is right. The likes of Paddy and Amy touring the streets with the Blessed Sacrament is theologically strange.

Jesus is already in these streets and houses.

He does not need clerics to unlock the Prisoner of the Tabernacle for people to have HlJesus.

This is a clerical circus show.

It is totally irrelevant clerics trying to appear relevant.

Looked at the video. Straightforward enough I suppose. Called is the operative word. How is it possible to hear Gods call in this strange world. He left behind the familiar. Why? God calls Christians to live and minister in the today. Question is what does a priest do that is different from anyone else anyway? The Church/sacraments can not exist except as part of the gathered Body- (Remember the private masses of the past-gone now sort of) The priesthood is indeed a job, calling and responsibility. I have yet to see a valid job description relevant to the real world. Perhaps you erudite and noble folk could lend insight-without the unnecessary sub cultural clap trap.

The Galway Diocese is a joke. It’s a cosy cartel around the bishop. The Diocesan Secretary went straight into the post from ordination and it has ruined him. A young man, not even forty, and behaving like Kim Jong Un or a cleric from Ireland in the 50s. The bishop allows him to rule like an ignoramus. That’s hardly surprising, because the bishop is an ignoramus himself. Several young priest’s have either left the ministry, or joined other dioceses or congregations. A priest was the subject of a safeguarding complaint and, because he is from a wealthy family, he was allowed to continue in ministry. He was accepted into the diocese from an order. He caused hell there and has done the same in Galway. He makes it his business to complain everywhere. Many of the clergy are in relationships, two with each other , one with a nurse for years. Two priest’s have been in exile for years. There are many selfless and dedicated clergy in Galway and my heart goes out to them. God help that young man in the video. He doesn’t know what’s ahead of him. I have two sons, ten and thirteen, and if either of them expressed a desire to be a priest, I’d be devastated.

Well, a couple of observations. Firstly Magna is no fool, and, though I deplore the sometimes – often – normally – intemperate language, he undoubtedly speaks truth to power, and, as Corporal Jones years ago so rightly observed, they don’t like it up them. Secondly, McCafferty’s call to confession without the gates is outrageous showmanship, which, combined with his motor-tour of the captive Christ, demonstrates his misunderstanding not only of the real presence of Christ, but his own absurd showmanship. Cue penitent parishioners – unfortunately only a couple of pensioners rather than recalcitrant youths, such as would have flocked to Spencer Tracy in Hollywood’s reimagining of the Catholic priesthood. I remain, devotedly, Dom Athelstan Rutherford OSB, formerly English Benedictine Congregation, now about to relocate to Kazakhstan following a most disagreeable visit this morning from Interpol. I blame the Irish!

I am sorry, but after watching that video my Gaydar is screaming at me. That young man s going to go through so much problems. If my gut feeling is correct, and I have not been wrong with suspecting some priests in my own diocese of being gay, and being proven right, then I feel this young man is not going to have a happy priesthood. Those tight jeans he is wearing, very tempting!!

With regards to access to hand sanitizers in churches – Going by where some priests hands have been before Masses in the past number of decades, maybe hand sanitizers should be always there in churches, so the congregation can wash away the dirt from where their grubby little priests have been.

Hi Pat. Not necessarily for publication, but some thoughts for your consideration.
1. You need to publish the link and times for your streamed mass every day – people will not know to browse through the previous posts to find it.
2. I work in marketing, and the question of “live steaming” vs “recorded events” is a common discussion. “Live” only has extra value if there is some opportunity to interact in real time (such as a question and answer session). Other than that, a recorded session delivers the same content, but has the huge advantage of being consumable “on demand” at the convenience of the consumer. I regularly see many more people accessing the recorded version of events/webinars than the live streamed version.

Just my thoughts and advice. Keep up the good work.

Pat please redouble your efforts to advocate for a Maynooth redress scheme for the survivors. The scheme should be based on the level of abuse experience and the recovery needs of the victims.

Add to that the mental hoodwinking. Attract the naive and vulnerable, along with the downright unsuitable, into a non existent profession: nice scheme. Pat has done right in asking the matter be referred to that bishop. That bishop has to now consider whether to show himself up by shunning a larger share of the blame at his own level (however crusty some of the ordinary clergy may have meantime become).

But before that redress scheme becomes operational there are some others to be dealt with and to jump that queue.

For starters:
1. Redress for all those abused by having to learn Irish.
2. Redress for all those abused by having to play sports and who were not that way inclined.
3. Redress for those who were abused for being taught to write by printing their letters and who cannot now write cursive script.
4. Redress for those abused by being taught to commit maths tables and poetry to memory instead of making those choices for themselves.
5. Redress for those abused by parents and guardians by being forced to take cod liver oil.

Praying to God at home has been “the new abnormal” for generations in church institution policy. That overlaps with Father McCafferty’s period of training. So, far worse blame attaches to the strategic moves of seniors over that period. The hollow gambit of those in higher authority than McCafferty is to complain about the abolition of externals. But those high authorities are the ones who abolished the internals first.

Whatever way you look at what McCafferty is up to, the prime mover in all this is himself. It is all about him, designed to put him in the spotlight. “Look at me…” The man needs to cop on and keep his head low. I guarantee someone will watch him one day and think, “Oh, I remember him……I remember that thing….”. It’s amazing what comes out of the woodwork sometimes. And McCafferty will find himself furloughed and not able to do the Grand Jesus Tour anymore ! Just saying !

God forbid Pat that any of us fall seriously – morally, emotionally and spiritually!! And more so if you are a priest. Leaving aside the horrendous sin and crime of sexual abuse committed by any person and which deserves the full rigour of civil law, surely the human failings and vagaries which are part of our humanity and which can affect us emotionally and mentally for life are not health matters that merit public scrutiny. This public telling of – and analysis of Fr. McCafferty’ s mental, emotional and spiritual well-being can have a hugely detrimental negative effect on him. Unless any person is deliberately and maliciously abusing, hurting and damaging another human being, the analysing of the pastoral work of this priest, I believe is totally unacceptable. Were any of us to have our lives put under the microscope as is happening to this priest, Fr. McCafferty, we mught not likevwhat is unearthed, and sych scrutiny of this priest is dangerous and could potentially have serious consequences. Having gone through a long period of grave depression and personal struggles I know the gravity of nasty, unkind and snide referencing to mental health issues. Pat, I notice you have a covered tabernacle in your chapel and I’m wondering why since you made a rather cynical mention of “the prisoner in the tabernacle”!! Do you not believe in the REAL PRESENCE of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the Tabernacle? I do but I am also very conscious of the invitation at the end of Mass – Go in peace to love and serve the Lord – I imagine, like you and me, Fr. McCafferty believes that his ministry with and for people, truly begins with those words, as is meant too for all of us!! Why judge him against your standards when he is trying his utmost?

I dont think criticising Father McCafferty for poor observance of Covid isolation is out of order. He should be telling older and vulnerable people “DONT GO OUT”.

In any event I cannot see why he calls in the newspapers to witness Confessions.

Of course I believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

But I also believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the people and homes of Ballymurphy.

The issue is not about falling seriously, morally, emotionally or spiritually.
And don’t forget about the horrendous crime of covering up crime.
The issue is pastoral practice carried out in public.

I think Fr. McCafferty’s personal issues, some of which I understand are in the public domain, probably make him a better priest than most, with greater capacity to empathize, than most individuals.

Having said that, pastoral work is professional work, or professional practice carried
out by a priest. Why should ANY professionals practice, not be looked at or questioned,
or praised or criticized and challenged, particularly in the middle of a global pandemic.

If I want to build a house I have a fair degree of control over which architect, builder and solicitor I choose. While younger mobile comfortably of parishioners may choose to avoid a local PP, curate or parish they don’t like by travelling elsewhere, many older more dependent and less mobile parishioners have limited choice concerning whatever “ministry” their local bishop imposes, including the oddballs or rejects from elsewhere.
I suppose that those who believe in religious rigmarole may find solace in “offering it up”, for their bible certainly has plenty of quotes about “things being sent to try us….” eg: 1. Peter 1: 7-9 etc etc.
But if I was a devout parishioner in my dependent old age, and with any degree of knowledge of the RCC’s widespread abusive clergy I have to wonder how I would feel about having my parish landed with one of these oddities or misfits.
I view “faithful support of the clergy” cathbots and clergy sometimes laud here as a mark of the RCC’s success in brainwashing and indoctrination.
But thankfully much is changing thanks to media exposure and efforts like +Pat’s.

10.51: Pat, I agree that no one, priest or otherwise, should break the guidelines re: Covid 19. All of us must exercise the grearest care and responsibility. We can correct people without cracking them apart, sometimes motivated by personal agendas. The point I simply make is that we should be very careful about subjecting vulnerable or broken people to nasty vitriol and be forever undermining their well intentioned acts of pastoral outreach. I do not approve of photographing open confession! Silly and foolish. But I believe Fr. Mc. may just need a gentle bit of advice not an onslaught. I’m glad you will not print dangerous and derogatory remarks about him. I despair of humanity sometimes but in these days I have witnessed amazing humanity and exemplary Christian living.

Yet again, Pat pronounces on all of us as priests. You can make some very relevant observations but mostly you seek out and hound after any opportunity to ‘down’ priests. Your way of doing things is not faultless nor the most virtuous. I am appalled now when I go shopping at how some people are careless about social distancing, including some staff who are often too close. I am appalled at runners and joggers on pathways who sprinkle buckets of sweat droplets all over the place. There are many among us who are utterly careless re: hygiene, respect for others and their well being. We can find examples everywhere. Apparently at a Dunnes store close by me a hospital doctor walked through in his clogs and green overcoat and was shouted at by other shoppers. That’s reckless. None of us should endanger others by our behaviour. The spiritual comfort which Fr. Mc is attempting to give others can be done in other creative ways. He does not, however, deserve all day scrutiny!

12.32: All priests are required to seek permission of family relatives first before visiting the sick and housebound. I believe that after covid 19, if we get to such a moment, the interaction between priests and the sick and housebound will have to be carried out with greater family involvement. For quite a number of years I am very conscious of boundaries in visiting those who live alone. I practice the pastoral care of ensuring family relatives know and if possible that a family member is present. All our ministers of the Eucharist only visit with family permission and consent. This is about best practices. I also believe that our way of being present to and with one another will change, perhaps irrevocably. Now that we may be potentially exposed to mysterious viruses we will be very circumspect about our interpersonal behaviours.

The reality is that I can vouch as a parishioner for the immense commitment by our priests in the way they have dealt with a huge number of funerals, many covid related, discreetly visited needy families and supported us through our parish website and webcam. NEWSFLASH: Some GOOD news. Trainee priest Chris Gault has swapped his Dominican habit for scrubs and is helping out as a doctor in Belfast for the duration of the pandemic. Was just on RTE news. The former junior doctor is based in Dublin with Dominicans and studying philosophy in Maynooth. This is FINALLY some good news.

A new priest & family (former CoE) came to our parish. Neighbour said she would not go to confession to him because he was married. She also said she knew this was stupid. However the announcement was shrouded in mawkish sentimentalist claptrap, devoid of any robust spirituality from a Rev Walshe who spoke about the protection received by the doctor who was being sent back to the world ‘from outer space???’

Seemingly the community is well distanced and protected from the north inner-city parish, and, as would be expected, might as well be located at the far side of the moon. One wonders how they support themselves financially. Probably live on fresh air – much of it hot!!!!!

He used the word ‘calling’ in relation to priesthood more than once, and I knew that he would eventually describe priesthood as a gift. Which he did. (Cue the by-now customary guffawing. 😅)

Only a Romanist seminarian or priest would think in terms of supernatural calling here; no one else thinks of himself in this way: no doctor, no craftsman, no lawyer, etc. But it all adds to the mystique and the absurd grandeur of priesthood; and Romanists do revel in this kind of self-aggreandisement, and will not be denied it. And then he crowned his baroque self-accredidation by calling priesthood (and therefore himself) ‘a gift’. Tell that to the kids raped or sodomised by Romanist priests. This is clericalism writ large, and this fool is doinig neither himself nor others favours by lyricising priesthood and priests. He’s a walking clerical cliché.

What the worthy clerics who comment here are once again completely missing is that it is difficult or impossible to ring up a priest and say ‘You have placed my elderly relatives at risk of mortal illness by encouraging or even allowing them to ignore the current social distancing necessary for health’.
If you think the majority of people would feel able to say that directly to a priest you are even bigger idiots than I already knew you were. Do you seriously claim to be unaware of the deference which still pertains around clergy?
And if anyone is going to say that people are not deferential around priests I can tell you that while the deference may have slipped from 1950s levels very slightly what people say to you is heavily filtered. Even on the rare occasions when people publicly call priests paedophiles that is nothing compared to what they say about you in private.

1. Dean Kennedy – where is he these days ? All has gone quiet on that front. Surely somebody has some intelligence ? Kennedy always lightened up this blog. It’s about time he gave us more.

What intrigues me is why the SJs hadn’t got some clue about him before they took him on. And, did he provide them with a good reason to shuffle him off when he was with them. I’ve just learned that P E Bendict has linked gay marriage equality to ‘the Anti-Christ’. This, along with invitro-fertilisation, and some other modernist stuff. It’s all material for a biography on the old fruit (?) and fraud. ‘Fruit (?)’ because he lives with a German archbisbop some believe is actually his boyfriend, and ‘fraud’ because he conveniently omits any mention of his time as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the fact that duringnit he concealed stacks of reports on child-sexual abuse by diry, perverted, Romanist parasites and moochers around the world.

Now if a soul were to ask me, I’d say keeping mum about the abuse of children and refusing to act in their defence for the good of ‘holy mother church’ is something that would please Lord Satan to, well, to high heaven actually. Erm, perhaps not so high as heaven.

Yet again I am inclined strongly to agree with Magna. I wonder whether he was ever a pupil of mine – he being not entirely Irish. No; I typed ‘archbishop’ correctly, since I was using the word as a common noun rather than as a title.

And ‘child-sexual abuse’ was typed correctly, too, since the words ‘child’ and ‘sexual’, in being expressed adjectivally of ‘abuse’, did so as a phrase (collectively) rather than independently. You are right in stating that the hyphen here was unnecessary, but it was not incorrect to use it either: I believe that the phrase ‘child-sexual’ reduces the risk of ambiguity concerning whether the children in question were the object or the subject of the abuse.

I cheerfully concede your other points. But then, I did say that my comment had been composed and posted in haste: I was rather rushed earlier.😆 (Oh! That, er, ‘bottle’ you mentioned was an entirely inculpable bystander.)
