Tom Rastrelli’s book is a very important read for those who wish to understand the homosexualisation of the priesthood and the the ocean of ABUSE that flows from it.

Rastrelli was first of all sexually abused by his doctor.

Rastrelli when being abused by doctor and priest.

Then he was repeatedly sexually abused by his pastor – who was a serial ephebophile.

He was repeatedly seduced by various other clerics.

Rastrelli on ordination

He is not a victim.

He knows he played his part.

When he came clean to the archbishop he was told to cover up, but didn’t.

Rastrelli today

He considered suicide very often.

The book is good because it is exactly what is happening now in Ireland and Maynooth.

In fact worse things are happening here now than those described in the book.

It shows the hypocrisy of the whole RCC approach to sexually.

It also shows the hypocrisy of the RCC with regard to abuse and seduction.

+ Pat, you have done a good job in highlighting various malaises in the Catholic Church and the Catholic priesthood. Well done. The current theme, homosexualisation of the priesthood and questionable cultures and behaviours within the ranks of the clergy and the seminary training system, is valuable. HOWEVER…..whilst these are important themes and need to be brought to the light, at this time surely there are other important issues that need to be aired and addressed ? Life is changing before our eyes, and the life of the Church and how it ministers in these days are important issues, not just as a way of pointing out the silliness that self-seeking clergy are prepared to get up to in order to make themselves ‘relevant’ and out of an abundance of self seeking attention, but also surely as a way of showing some of the great goodness that is going on amongst the faithful who are ministering to each other in quiet and loving ways on a daily basis ? I’d like to hear stories of that goodness. I think that this shift in emphasis will be long-lasting, and will curtail the clergy / minister dominated hold that bishops and priests have had for too long on the Church and the faithful. I think in the future people will value them for what good they do, but will readily see that they can step in to the undoubted breaches and lacks that we know are abundant in the institution of the Church and amounts the ranks of the clergy. This is a time for the faithful to take their rightful place. So, how about a debate on that development and some good news about the way our Church will emerge from the current times. ? Please ! Thanks !

9.22: I agree with your comment. Unfortunately when any good pastoral effort is made by clerics we are open for ridicule, mostly led by Pat. During this pandemic many good initiatives were taken by parishes and once this blog got hold of them these small, responsibly organised gestures by priests were mocked, torn to shreds and completely misrepresented. I disagree fundamentally with some open air gestures which focused on the priest more than the gesture itself. I believe some gestures were misjudged but mostly the vast majority of priests in parishes stayed rigidly within guidelines. There were and are some amazing acts of kindness, caring and neighbourliness being carried out everyday in our communities. Parishes have used webcams to the maximum at this time both spiritually and pastorally and initiated some small acts of charity. I agree with you that the sharing of some stories of this Christian living and people caring for one another would be beneficial for all of us. While it is essential to highlight abuse of all kinds and relevant issues, there is a repeat theme all too frequently eliciting predictable vitriol. In our parish we invited all age groups through our website and webcam to write poetry, short stories, prayers, reflections and do some art to capture their experiences since March. The response so far is good and the sentiments uplifting. We intend to publish a book at some stage when we can safely do so. Just an idea and very positive. Perhaps Sunday might be dedicated for such offerings from Pat’s readership.

You make a valuable observation at 9:22 am, which deserves respect and consideration, though my assessment of the situation is more cynical and radical than yours. You are correct in pointing to the untold good done daily, and quietly and unobtrusively by the faithful. I would merely expand that to include also by people in general without benefit of clergy or religious affiliation. The Church is collapsing in Europe and the Americas, whereas in Africa the same culture of clerical entitlement is not only being perpetuated there but exported back to Europe in a last desperate attempt to plug the gaps. I don’t actually have that much faith in lay ministries let alone lay leadership in parishes, which since the seventies has generally been the preserve of middle-class busy-bodies who get up the noses of those such as myself who would secretly prefer to see a “proper” priest.

You see that I have just shot myself in the foot by revealing my own conflicted state of mind. I still retain an affection for the lost world of an early morning Mass, preferably in the Old Rite, though I deplore the pantomime and toxic social attitudes of its current revivalists – my rule of thumb is that, if the celebrant is under seventy, then better stay away!

What is clear is that seminaries are unfit for purpose. In any other walk of life, this would have been recognized and they would have been closed down, just as say airlines are making 747s redundant. Yet we desperately continue to kid ourselves that the sun goes round the earth. Every time some simpering young man is ordained, it is an occasion for rejoicing … until the inevitable happens. Not matter how often the truth of seminary life is exposed, along comes something such as “Priest School” to invite the faithful and gullible members of the public to see heroes in formation.

So what to do? Each has to decide for themself. I rarely attend a church these days, but, if I do, there a few “intentional” churches, both RC and Anglican around the country which I would seek out owing to the particular community which has been developed there; otherwise I feel I am just going through the motions of being stuck in the pew listening to banalities.

Glad to have the book tip, by the way, and I will order it. It isn’t just another survivor’s story but addresses the heart of the matter, which the bishops still don’t wish to acknowledge.

A ‘balanced’ account of the history here must take account of the gross horror caused by abuse and corruption and face head on the fact that this horror undoes all of the ‘good’.
The Christ the cosseted clerics claim to follow made a promise of what would happen to those who cause scandal.
I will ask a question again that I have asked several times here which has never been answered: how should a Christian act in this situation?

The capitalisation of your words suggests your readiness to tear apart any forwarded suggestions or information about any gestures. Incidentally It’s not about clerics – this suggestion I made along with another poster is about sharing of good news events, and there are many such stories, carried out by neighbours and communities and chyrch outreach groups. When I return later from one such gesture I will report back. I’m sure you too can share something about what has happened within your Oratory and community. I am going to stick my neck out here and nominate a parish where there is indeed a warm, kindly ministry exercised by devoted priests and committed laity – the Manchester Oratory at St Chad’s Cheetham Hill. This is a run-down district not at all part of the Manchester boom, where the church is open, and there is always a friendly response at the parish house. The Fathers – yes, it is very “old school” – do a great deal of good both among the local hard-luck cases – of whom there are very many – and are faithful and much appreciated visitors to Strangeways Prison just across the road. The Rector, Ray Matus, is a local legend.

That’s all very fine about the Manchester Oratory. But, the church should not be open at present. Hopefully, they are not considering themselves above the requirements of the current lockdown ? It is so important for the Church and its priests to lead by example, not just in charity, but also by keeping to the requirements of lockdown. Please reassure us that these Fathers are doing so !

Bishop Pat, do the vast majority of lay people know the depth of rottenness in the institutional Church? I don’t think they do. Some of those who do know find it very hard to believe.Following the ‘Uncle Ted’ revelations in America, right wing lay catholic cheerleaders finally realise the depth of corruption, along with the number of complicit corrupt bishops in the American Church. People such as Dr. Janet Smith are finally speaking out about Church corruption.

I think, if most practicing lay catholic’s knew the depth of rottenness within the Institution there would be outrage.

The Roman establishment is truly the Devil’s den. This is something my own personal understanding has taught me. Under NO circumstances must they be trusted with ANY vulnerables-childen or adults.
It will be intresting to take stock of the results of last year’s IICSA.

During my time as a seminarian I was never physically or sexually assaulted. As a young priest I was sexually propositioned by three older, senior priests. In Wales, as a priest, I was on the receiving end of emotional and mental abuse. In Belfadt I was physically assaulted by one priest.

Thank you at 11:19 am. St Chad’s is indeed dutifully observing the lockdown, which I should have made clear. My intention was to demonstrate that in a run-down district of the city there is NORMALLY a Christian presence day in and day out, which is pretty rare in these days of locked churches and priests who are too busy. There is no need PLEASE for any upright citizen to snitch on the Fathers to the Greater Manchester Police, who need no encouragement having recently tasered a man in Castlefield for having been caught delivering a food parcel to his neighbours during lockdown.

I knew a saintly monk, a confessor, who had ‘heard it all’ in the confessional for years.
He often said to me in conversation….’the faith was far stronger in the laity than in the majority of the clergy’.

Goodness within the Christian community is not the problem.

I couldn’t bring myself to support the Catholic Church especially the top tier of bishops, cardinals, popes for so much corruption, hypocrisy, sheer disdain for victims of abuse, double standards, dishonesty on their part, so much secrecy which belies their cover ups. Bishops, cardinals and popes are like the’ pharisees’ as I don’t want to have anything to do with them cos they support corruption. Hypocrises, double standards or double dealings, not practice what they preach, putting themselves on pestal before God, supporting gay lifestyle with our monies.

That doesn’t detract the good priests who were honest and decent in comparison to their Bishop and have done good work. Bishops hypocrises, double standards, misuse of monies, double life, dishonesty drown down the good work done by some good priests out there. Couldn’t understand why some good priests don’t protest on bishop/cardinal’s popes hypocrisy, double standards, dishonesty. Now starting to think that Catholic Church is the ‘anti christ’ cos they does the opposite to jesus message. Hence pharisees.

Stopped giving monies to church cos I couldn’t bring myself to support church if they do nothing to confront the problems such as sheer hypocrises, double standards and double life, obsessed with money to support their ‘gay’ lifestyle, bling life such as bishop treanor which should be reported but not, why,?, not practice what they preach, dishonesty as I could go on etc. Felt sorry for good hardworking priest who felt let down by ranking bishops thus their good work demoted or degraded to bottom of tier but I don’t want to have anything to do with catholic church unless they reform themselves which is probably unlikely given their inability to change it.

Came from abused background which I went to schools ran by the church, nuns and CBS. I didn’t understand the problems from the nuns, CBS as they took it out on ourselves. We were young that time and not understood the ‘problems’ of the rcc. There was one nun we remember as she was evil in some way. She took out on everybody ranging from deaf school boys to teachers as nuns were afraid of her. She was nasty piece of work as she became Abbess at age 32 which made me wonder what’s going on inside the church formation and training of nuns or CBS that time. She was sexually frustrated as we could see that. That said, it raise the problem of church huge obsession with sex. Jesus wasn’t obsessed with sex just mainly ‘sin’ re the Bible.

Perhaps Stephen Wilson is simply the target of homophobic bullying amongst seminarians (and ex-seminarians) at Maynooth. There is evidence of this happening in the past. It was for this reason that the 6 “rigid” seminarians were expelled prior to the summer of love.
Whilst I don’t deny that there have been some dodgy goings-on at Maynooth, there has been a poisonous culture of homophobia and extreme bullying at Maynooth.
I have hard evidence of this and I’d be willing to send this to you Bishop Buckley if I wasn’t afraid that you would use it to crush me.
Niall Carroll, Gerard Quirke, James Boyle and Evin O’Brien were key figures in this.

Ah, I’ve just had a quick read of Archbishop Erstwile of the Underground’s Easter Sunday homily. Interesting dreary theme for Easter Sunday. Very miserable and telling.
It looks as though they are going to attempt to use the daft bugger over the water as a skapegoat. However, they did not follow ANY laws or rules (if they thought he was still bonified, then why no paper trial?!). Even found guilty by HM’s ICO and another serious orginisational vestigation. Either way they are well and trumy up shit creek. They are scratching and rumeging like rats in a sewer flood, and the right place for them if you ask me.
The fella in Sunny FannyDeedDid is certainly being kept in the dark for sure, big time! Not sure about the guy from Fydi@te… They are ALL compromised. This spreads accross 3 seperate Roman Dioceses it has to be understood. Right to tbe very TOP in each case!

A seminarian was a health risk on the corridor passing around STD’s from Anal and Oral gay sex. A few seminarians did test positive and quietly attended the the clinc in the Mater.
