CHURCH SEXUAL PROBLEMS IN SCOTLAND.

THE HISTORICAL – Fort Augustus Abbey School

In 2013 Bishop of Aberdeen Hugh Bolbert apologised for child sex abuse at Fort Augustus Abbey School

BBC investigation heard accounts from former pupils of physical violence, rape and sexual assault.  One of Scotland’s most senior Catholic clergymen is to apologise for three decades of abuse at a boarding school.

Hugh Gilbert, Bishop of Aberdeen, told  his parishioners of his “horror and shame” over the revelations that monks raped and sexually abused children at Fort Augustus Abbey School.

A BBC investigation, aired last Monday, heard accounts from former male pupils of physical violence, rape and sexual assault by monks over 30 years at the school.

The bishop has offered an apology on behalf of the Church, in the hope of repairing its reputation following a series of scandals.

Bishop Gilbert said the “sins and failures” of the Catholic Church in Scotland must be acknowledged before the damage can be repaired.

Former pupil claims monks at closed boys’ school Fort Augustus Abbey committed ‘systematic, brutal, awful torture’

Police are investigating allegations of abuse at a Catholic boarding school in the Scottish Highlands, following complaints of a brutal regime in which boys were physically beaten, psychologically tortured and sexually assaulted. The school closed in 1993.

Officers from Police Scotland travelled to Newcastle to interview Andrew Lavery, 41, who for two years in the 1980s attended the fee-paying Fort Augustus Abbey, which was run by Benedictine monks.

“It was systematic, brutal, awful torture,” says Lavery, who says he was beaten, sexually assaulted and isolated in a locked room for days on end under “special measures”. He added: “The psychological torture was the most damaging. In the end I wanted to kill myself.”

Lavery claims he was beaten unconscious by a monk and lay master while pupils watched, then left at the playing fields to crawl back to school. He also says he experienced “greying”, which involved other pupils pinning the victim’s legs apart while his testicles were hit with a hockey stick. A monk watched without intervening. “I have had pain in my left testicle all my life,” he said.

Lavery also accuses Monk A, now a cleric in England, of physically beating and sexually assaulting him. He will tell police that when he broke his leg Monk A took advantage of his vulnerability and tried to grab his testicles.

“I told him to leave me when I went to the toilet, but he was standing over me. He said, ‘No, you need a hand.’ I heard all his heavy breathing behind me. It was the wrong sort of breathing to hear in your life. He was fumbling and I was screaming at him to get off.”

Monk A is also accused of selling alcohol to underage pupils. When contacted by the Observer, he admitted giving them beer, but said: “I never beat people up and there was certainly never any sexual stuff. I don’t know what he’s talking about.”

There has been heated debate on the school’s old boys website about abuse, with some denying it took place. Des Austin, a former pupil who privately investigated abuse at the school, posted extracts from 13 separate emails he received from old boys claiming physical and sexual assault from 1954-91.

“The thing that got to me,” one wrote, “was the sexual abuse … and the fact that no one would believe me. My mother said, ‘priests never do such things’.”

Cardinal Keith O’Brien, who resigned as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh after allegations of sexual misconduct, was a visitor to the school and guest of honour at last year’s old boys’ dinner.

Jimmy Savile, who owned a house in the Highlands, was also an occasional guest and Lavery remembers his Rolls-Royce being parked outside the monastery.

Lavery was in a senior position as an addictions nurse until last year when he suffered a traumatic physical injury. While recovering, he suffered flashbacks, recovered memories and night terrors. He no longer works. He has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and assessed as requiring psychotherapy and specialist abuse counselling.

Another former pupil, Douglas Hiddleston, from Fortrose, remembers Lavery being treated “viciously” by pupils and staff. One of the few Protestants in the school, Hiddleston says he was also targeted. “Monk A grabbed me by the throat, pinned me up against the wall and called me a Proddy bastard,” he said.

Another pupil, who asked to remain anonymous, said Monk A “was the epitome of nastiness”. The man, who says he was once nearly drowned by fellow pupils while staff watched, also alleges that another monk was guilty of sexually predatory behaviour and tried to “groom” him. “Seediness pervaded the school,” he said.

The culture was similar for an earlier generation, according to some at the school in the 1960s. “I came close to suicide,” said Sean O’Donovan, who says he was bruised for five weeks after a birching.

“I just couldn’t see an end to it.I tried using a rope, but it was too thin. It was very painful and, since I was trying to stop the pain, that made me think.”

William Wattie, who attended from 1959 to 1964 and became a headteacher, said: “Institutionalised bullying … I could never work out where the gentle carpenter of Nazareth fitted in.” He questioned “cuddling” by monks at the school’s feeder primary at Carlekemp in North Berwick, which has also been linked to abuse allegations.

The Catholic church in Australia accepted abuse had been perpetrated by Father Aidan Duggan, a former teacher at both Carlekemp and Fort Augustus. Duggan died in 2004.

Fort Augustus monastery, which belonged to the English Congregation of Benedictines, also closed in 1998. The then Abbot President, Father Richard Yeo of Downside Abbey, admits former pupils have contacted him regarding the school. “I have heard allegations of both physical and sexual abuse which have disturbed me. If anyone comes forward to speak to me about this, I will try to be there for them,” he said.

THE CURRENT – HOMOSEXUAL MISCONDUCT IN SCOTTISH DIOCESE

I have been invited to contribute a report that will challenge the Scottish gay Jack the Lads priests.

As part of that I intend the names of those involved to the Scottish bishop – privately at first.

This blog has seen consistent reports from priests and laity about gay canals in every Scottish diocese – activities the bishops have failed to challenge.

I am inviting priests, laity and other concerned people to comment and email about this topic – and a future report.

This is the opportunity for those readers who have been asking for ANOTHER SCOTTISH DAY on the blog.

It pays to revisit one’s previous inattention to news stories.
Peter Smith in his glib sayings comes out very badly from the Mike Wendling story dated July 7, 2008. (This is identical to the 2001 story which obviously by 2008 was still not thought by the public to have been dealt with properly, and with the sole addition of Alan Love.)
Did Keith O’B know Alan Love?
Did Hill, Fogarty and others start offending, or manifesting distinctly dubious conduct, prior to Arundel hiving off Southwark? How much did Southwark officials know about the entire situation, including after it became metropolitan see?
Why did Bowen get moved to Southwark and did he have Scottish relationships? Where is Cashman in all this? Did Alan Love know Fogarty, Hill et al prior to his move?
What places in Arundel did Alan Love appear? We need the full list.
Did Winning know Alan Love?
Why was the Despard book repressed? This is extremely sinister.
Did the individuals named by Despard know Alan Love or what did they know about him?
What does Toal know about how his equals and “betters” dealt with Alan Love and with the people named by Despard?
Who else did Alan Love egg on and incite once he got to Arundel? Conversely who egged him on?
Did Alan Love know Fogarty?
What seminary did Alan Love go to? What seminaries did the people named by Despard go to? What seminaries did Winning, Toal and Keith O’B go to?
Whose idea was it that Alan Love should go to Arundel? What were the expressed motives and connotations at the time and whom was it discussed among (throughout both England and Scotland)?
An “inclination” is one thing especially if one makes successful efforts not to let it turn into mawkish brooding immaturity and obsession, let alone importuning and predation. Just like in any other “movement” one “sees advantage” in “allowing” oneself to become “implicated” when “under pressure”. For some “strange reason” picking on under 16s has gone out of fashion so the over 16s are now open season, seeing as they aren’t deemed to need “safeguarding”.

This is the only mention I found.
I know I once slightly and briefly knew a man with what seemed a strange accent, and a mysterious personality, to do with religion, called that. I didn’t see him doing anything but with hindsight I might as well try to figure out what was going on. Mum & Dad weren’t much impressed with the state of religion but tried to be respectful. There were things going on at my secular secondary school and it was the days of Savile and the days of “White Heat”.
It’s a common name, anyway.
The story doesn’t say what parishes he was at and I’m not going to say what parishes I was at. My main purpose in posting is to illustrate what a wide range of questions do actually arise, and jog memories about any of these angles. Especially at what seminaries have they been teaching bishops how to do all the corner cutting? Was it the same seminaries who taught them to tell us all the beliefs had been abolished – when there wasn’t actually a real, objective need to abolish them? There is now 4 generations of public brought up on hysterical and insubstantial religion: it’s no wonder we were passive around the clergy. Never mind the bait – just switch switch switch.

11.12 I don’t believe the sort of person I seem to recall let alone the one in the report sufficiently resembles this sort of thing.

It was obviously ultra sensitive given the dearth of clear information – and its relevance to Smith.

Despard refers to Chester’s College which + Tartaglia was Rector.
So as to the others it would be a mixture of Rome or Chester’s maybe junior seminary at Langbank or St. Peter’s Newland’s

“I have been invited to contribute a report that will challenge the Scottish gay Jack the Lads priests.”
Invited by whom, Bp Pat? Surely not the Little Rancid Flower!

Like

If you are referring to me, e.g. “the Little Rancid Flower”, I don’t mind the name calling (I’m used to that) but I would prefer not to be compared to Voris and I certainly do not wear a wig. My hair is all my own, every white strand of it! Hairdressers tell me (or did before they were banned) that other women pay good money to get my hair colour!

As I’ve said elsewhere on this blog, if there is something wrong in what I have said, point it out. Otherwise, why do you strike me? (John 18:23)

And for the record, I’ve not invited anyone to contribute to any report about anyone. Years ago, an Edinburgh priest “outed himself”, pictured on the front page of the Scottish tabloid, the Sunday Mail, claiming at that time that there is a whole “network of “gay” priests operating under the noses of the Scottish bishops”, so really, there’s little point – in one sense – in identifying them; clearly the Bishops know their identities and don’t think it matters. They are safe enough now – no Bishop will remove a priest for being actively sexual these days, especially homosexually active. No, what they do is punish those who ARE concerned at the scandal, and remove any priest (like Father Matthew Despard) who has the temerity to seek to alert the rest of the Church. Again, years ago, another Edinburgh priest who published a book about his own abuse in seminary (and later…) and who filled his book with the F word, was not removed or in any way disciplined. He was sympathetic to every aberration under the sun, so he was safe. As long as they’re pushing the new Vatican II springtime, they’re safe as houses, no matter how askew their moral compass.

So, be assured I’m not looking for anyone to participate in any report of mine on the subject. What I’ll be publishing on the subject in our July newsletter already has plenty of contributions – using some of the comments on this very interesting blog.

Have a nice day, miss you already !

Despard was / is an odd bod. No doubt about it. He definitely had / has a thing about homosexual clergy and their activities. He was pretty forthright in his book in naming people that he had come across that had propositioned him, or he knew were homosexually active, in particular when he was an Army chaplain. Many of the RC Army chaplains were homosexual and a good number of them were, perhaps still are, rampantly sexually active. Notwithstanding his single focus, perhaps a symptom of a somewhat autistic personality, he is perfectly correct to identify the incidence of homosexual activity amongst RC clergy. It was / is probably a little distasteful and not exactly cricket to be so specific about it and the names, but he does have a good point in indicating the blatant disregard for celibacy amongst groups of clergy and their sexual activity. He was eventually eased out of the Army, and then his own diocese. Dishing the dirt on your own colleagues has a price that must be paid. Anyhow, it’s all in his book if anybody wants to get a favour of it for themselves.

Like

It was available on Amazon. I think he self-published and sold it there. I had a copy. I’ll have a look for it ! It’s not a great read, but there is a great deal of damaging information in it, and he is not afraid to name names. It is no wonder that the knives were out for him. I’m not sure what the ostensible reason was that he was sidelined, and I expect still is sidelined, in his diocese, but I imagine that something was engineered in order to do him in and get him out of the way and to discredit him. Whatever you may think of him personally, there is still some substantial stuff in his writings which accord with what we know – that there is a sexually active cohort in the RC priesthood, which ignores any public promises it has made about celibacy. And, the most rampant amongst them are the sexually active homosexuals. Now, what people do with their bits and with each other, as long as it is legal, I do not care about. I’m not sure God cares too much about it as well. He has bigger things to concern him. But, what I do care about, and what God will care about, is honesty and integrity. And, it is clear that amongst the RC clergy there is a substantial group that flouts its promised regularly and systematically, and I think that should outrage us and it will surely outrage God. Do they think we are fools ?! If a priest wants to be sexually active, either hetero or homosexually, then that is fine by me, but at least have the decency to leave the priesthood and then have the freedom to do what you want. But, if you want to remain a priest, it is not too much for us to expect, given your public and solemn promise of celibacy and chastity, that you keep to your promise and live lives which accord with celibacy and chastity.

Bp Pat, the gist of the story is, he met a man/men and he/they tried to seduce him. In other words, every man he ever met in his whole life was out to seduce him.

suggesting that Despard had some success on appeal to Rome. However, Motherwell Diocese still lists him as c/o Diocesan Offices. So, I imagine he is still furloughed. For revealing the dark, grimy underside of the Catholic priesthood in Scotland.
I always thought it interesting that not one of the names that he revealed in this book and said some quite explicit things about bothered to take him to court for defamation, slander etc. I guess they made the calculation that once on oath the truth would come out for all to see and hear. I guess Despard was right about them. They were just too frightened and had too much to lose to challenge him and take him on. Because they knew what he was saying about them was true..

Perhaps Despard was the bully, Bishop Pat. After all, publishing such detail, and naming names, is an easy thing to do, especially when you know that those you are accusing haven’t the wherewithal to seek redress in Civil Court. It is also cowardly.
Men like Despard, Marsden, Voris, and the rest, have a homophobic agenda: it is not primarily unchastity that interests them: this is but a stepping stone to their fundamental purpose, denunciation of homosexuality itself and the barring of gay candidates from seminary.
I think it very telling that none of these men, to my knowledge, has ever investigated unchastity among heterosexual priests. And it isn’t, I suspect, because there may now be a preponderance of gay men in the priesthood. No; such unchastity simply does not interest them at all. If it did, they certainly wouldn’t be calling for the barring of straight men from seminary admission. I’m surprised that you appear not to have seen this.

The institutional Romanist Church certainly has a solid, and unquestioned, reputation for producing holy men, hasn’t it?
It’s almost exhilerating to know that one belongs to a church founded by Jesus Christ, because his signature is writ large in everything this institution does.
Yes, yes, yes. Don’t be irritating by raising trifles. Of course there have been one or two bad apples, but not enough to sour the crop.
And yes, yes, yes, those of us who didn’t rape/torture little children… Well, of course we knew what our confreres were doing, but we acted under obedience in not reporting these crimes to the police; it would have been sinful for us to break the laws of Jesus’ church and to ignore his will through disloyalty to our religious orders. After all, we were men of God, and the avoidance of sin was paramount.
Wasn’t it? 😐
You do see where I’m coming from, don’t you? 😕

To the person calling himself “Fr Joe” – it is a falsehood to describe me as a Nazi sympathiser, simply because I compared the outcry when a traditional priest agreed to conduct a funeral for a repentant former Nazi, to the total acceptance of a very public funeral for a very public and unrepentant partnered homosexual celebrity. I pointed to Canon Law on the matter – but that would mean nothing to anyone here, since you all appear to detest Canon Law and everything else that is remotely Catholic.

Elsewhere on this thread someone described Fr Despard’s book as “pure filth” – that is entirely untrue. Frankly, I’ve read more filth on this blog, from the keyboards of all too many contributors in the various threads which I’ve visited, than in Fr Despard’s book.

Did you object to the Catholic funeral provided for Pope JPII? Because he never repented centuries of Church teaching, and his own, in favour of the death penalty, teaching clearly at variance with Jesus’ command to love of enemy and teaching that now has been ruled morally inadmissable.
If you did not object to the funeral arrangements for this man, why did you object to those for Stephen Gately: he was, I believe, a firm opponent of caputal punishment.

To clarify 1.19, some Irish I’ve known are like Belgians, or Goans, namely they act normal. Others seem to assume we should equate Irish = catholic and / or catholic = Irish. Bishop Pat comes over as one of the normal ones. Irish is great, and folk is great, provided I’m entitled to think it of no consequence for me at times. I’ve been a victim of the caste system myself. The kind of religion where people of all sorts drop into and out of denominations every couple of generations, more or less on purpose, is healthier. Fr G You know what you have written is a complete lie against Bishop Toal.
Matthew Despard is not in a Diocesan property if you remember he is at the flat he purchased for his family so Bishop Toal cannot evict him.
But the dioceses contributes to his keep.
And yes Rome upheld part of his appeal and Bishop Toal offered him a chaplaincy as he is NOT suitable for a parish.
As for his book it was Number one in Amazon and he made a fortune from it but seems he has no money.
The book was withdrawn as it made false lies about + Philip and senior clergy.
And the life Despard gave visiting clergy was shocking.
Sadly there are many “Gay” clergy in every dioceses of Scotland both active and inactive but sadly NO Bishop wants to seriously address it and I think it maybe due to the lack of clergy but it needs addressed.

Father Peter Littleton. Originally from Cornwall, he wanted the bright lights of London town. So switched to Southwark. Even after he was not recommended by the Wonersh seminary, what did the late Arch of Southwark do??? Ordain him of course.

There were questions about Littleton raised at Valladolid but they couldn’t be proven. The priest on his placement parish in Plymouth Diocese wrote him a poor report after a parishioner made a complaint about him. Peter requested to be transfered to Southwark.
Southwark have had nothing but complainfs about him, and clergy cannot stand him (his Nickname is Peter Littleprick). He is noted for his arrogance amongst clergy, his habit of talking down to clergy many years his senior and surrounding himself with dubious clergyfriends. Wonersh couldn’t recommend him, Southwark didn’t want him. He finds himself backed into a corner… I give him 5 years of ministry in this diocese and then he’ll get found out. He preaches that homosexuality is evil and loves preaching on Theology of the Body. I hve even heard it said he considers humanie vitae to be an infallible teaching of the Church.

Pat, did you know that the late Joe Dolan went home and wrote “Oh me, Oh my, you’re such a good looking woman”, after being introduced to Fanny Mullaney during the interval at a gig in Bouladuff? Tis’ true, Pat. Twas’ in the ballroom of a popular local hostelry, The Horse and Jockey’s Bollicks.

They’re all frauds. Covering their sexuality with drag-queen style vestments. All daughters of Old Mother Burke.

And that’s what will end that conception of church – we’re all too wise to the subconscious motivation now and clergy lose credibility carrying on like that. If they want to be trad there still isn’t any need for the dressing up – the manuals before the council actually said ordinary priests should wear no lace and the liturgical movement inspired plain dignified vestments (and anything else in church of course) and decried the baroquerie. Actually the church I think is worst for that (apart from the oratorios) is Farnborough Abbey which is like an old lady’s dressing room dripping in tat and trinkets.

8:31pm The facebook page St Michaels Abbey Past & Present has photos of the various phases that the Farnborough Abbey Church has been through. Like you, I dislike it today. I prefer the late 80’s with hanging pyx / trancept choirs and no ghastly pulpit! Oh and not forgetting the amazing Stations of the Cross by Sir Frank Brangwyn RA. I wonder what happened to them?

Peter Littleton has two personalities. One is gay sex obsessed. The other is Medieval priest. How can anyone take him seriously? How the hell was he ever ordained. The Catholic Church is dead.

I can tell you how he was ordained.. he’s a lawyer, an expert in blackmail and slimy rhetoric. Littleprick has all kinds of alagatios surrounding him but NOTHING could be proven with hard evidence. He challenged everyone who opposed his ordination and blackmailed his way in. Littletit has a messiah complex, he believes that he and Higgins alone can save the church. The irony is, Littleprick preaches against the very homosexual activity he preaches against. Littletit contact with JP Lyttle, M Byrne, and Kitt among others. He is still actively on the scene. We all know it but we cannot prove it.

4.53pm. No they weren’t, that is just lies. You’re defaming a good priest, Louise Kitt is a good man. Why are you peddling such untruths?
