DIARMUID MARTIN MAKES A THIRD OF DIOCESAN LAY STAFF REDUNDANT

Sarah Mac Donald Irish Independent

June 12 2020

A third of staff working for the archdiocese of Dublin are to lose their jobs as it grapples with the financial cost of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Irish Independent has learned the diocese, Ireland’s largest, is working on details of a voluntary redundancy scheme which it will offer its 82 staff.

A spokesperson for Archbishop Diarmuid Martin confirmed the proposed job cuts and said a restructuring process is expected to take some months to complete. “Staffing levels could be reduced by one third,” she said.

That would mean job losses for as many as 28 of the 82 staff employed by the diocese.
Staff are to be offered support and advice mechanisms which will be paid for by the diocese.

The jobs affected are believed to be in the areas of parish pastoral workers, finance, human resources, communications and the diocese’s chancery office.

One Dublin priest who wished to remain anonymous, told the Irish Independent he was “gutted” for the diocese’s pastoral staff with whom he has worked. “We could not have got through the pandemic without our lay parish colleagues and then just when parishes are about to reopen, our diocese chooses to do this,” he said.

The diocese said that like many organisations it is facing increasing financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic and the closure of churches for public worship for almost three months.

The current crisis had compounded the sustained fall in financial support in Dublin for over a decade as congregations have become smaller, the diocese said.

Dr Martin’s office told the Irish Independent that the closure of churches for Masses since March had seen support for Share, the second collection at Masses, drop by 80pc between March and May this year compared with the same period last year.

The Share collection is used to support poorer parishes and Central Services in the diocese.
Last month, Archbishop Martin announced that priests in Dublin had agreed to a 25pc cut to their incomes.

“A restructuring strategy to address this urgent situation is under way in an effort to reduce costs and plan for a sustainable future,” the diocese stated.

The spokesperson said the voluntary redundancy scheme is part of an overall restructuring plan but stressed it would be attentive to the needs of all involved.

PAT SAYS

This, of course, is very bad news for the 28 people who will lose their jobs and for their families.

Hopefully they will get as generous a redundancy payment as DM and his associates can muster.

Hopefully they will find new jobs asap.

But, I feel this downsizing is a thing the RCC are going to have to get used to.

Fewer people attending church.

Fewer vocations.

Fewer priests available.

Less and less money coming in.

Personally, I view this decline as a very good thing and in fact the work of the Holy Spirit.

The RCC has become an evil organisation and empire.

It will shrink and shrink and in time have as much influence, hopefully  as a local social club.

I have never lost my faith in Jesus  thank God.

But I have lost all faith in the RCC.

That second faith was pulverised out of me by the hideous priests and bishops I have met over the past 44 years.

a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders. I wish him well in retirement. As a retiree, I found it very difficult in the first few months. I had been used to getting up at 6am and getting home by 6pm. He may also find it difficult. However, he has done a lot of work behind the scenes and he is a gentle soul and deserves a rest, as we all do. I’ve just had my grandchildren come over in the past 2 days – all 16 of them. I’m a very proud grandfather and they are all doing so well in life, thanks be to God and his blessed mother. I hope you are all doing well in these strange times. I have tuned into your masses a couple of times, Bishop Pat. here’s hoping the sun continues to shine on us.

Some dioceses have cut money from their priests and very quietly. Shameful. It’s a painful lesson to younger clergy how they will be treated in the future.

They should get out while they can. There are other things they can do. They can serve the Gospel in other ways without being shackled to a medieval, feudal, institution……

11.46 Don’t be fooled most Irish Clergy are well looked after even the C/O.

The Lay Faithful are Very Good to the Clergy and Seminarians on placement in Parishes. I

In Scotland the Clergy are not salaried like the Irish Clergy. (usually Mass Stipends keep them going)

Likewise in England and Wales not all Salaried.

Don’t forget most Parishes and Diocesan Offices lay staff can be between 15K and 125K plus pension.

Secretaries, PA, Admin, Safeguarding, HR, Communications, Property Finance to name a few.

I stated this last week and again yesterday they must have got it from this blog or maybe DM communications team

Again we need to be realistic Ireland has 19 Seminarians according to Bishop Farrell so it is not rocket science that we do not need Maynooth and Irish college.

So do you see the pattern of worry.

Ireland needs New Strong Leadership and a Papal Nuncio who informs Rome the Facts why the Papal Nuncio allowed an Auxiliary Bishop for Armagh with 60 parishes is shocking.

What is Eammon Martin doing chasing a Red Beretta.

Get real, Bp Pat, they’ll just receive the minimum the law says on redundancy payments. For example, in ROI two weeks’ pay for every year of service {over the age of 16) plus one additional week’s pay. Payment is subject to a limit of €600 per week, so someone with twenty-five years services could receive €30,600.00.

Some of the younger priests need to be brought back down to earth. No rent, mortgage or utility bills. Why are they priests again? It is a priestly vocation, not a job. They should be counting souls, not money.

When did your PP last openly, publicly, challenge the massive and systemic corruption in the Romanist Church?

When did he last refuse to obey an unjust, unchristian order from his bishop?

Don’t bother answering: the questions are rhetorical. 😕

You’re defending a moral coward…by definition. And moral cowards’ primary interest isn’t the welfare of souls, but the pretense of such.

Grow up. 😩

3.23, round here I believe parish clergy don’t get unjust orders from our nearest bishop or (probably) his predecessor. As for safeguarding they know the diocesan and parish officers are conducting background checks. Safeguarding as all of our jobs, as part of our co-pastoring, and towards bishops and seminarians as well as under 16s, is a too new concept (in fact too old more likely). You need more youngness of heart, Carta.

The global economy is tanking due to the grotesquely disproportionate response to a bad flu with a mortality rate of 0.06%. No diocese is immune from the harsh economic realities to be faced soon by those who screamed for lockdown and have been enjoying their furlough superdole.
Why does Dublin diocese need 82 lay staff? What do they do, what have they achieved? Before Vatican II the Dublin churches were packed, new ones were opening and they put an extension onto Clonliffe, and the only lay staff were housekeepers.
Then the renewal and New Pentecost started, lol.

Regarding the popular Cardiff Oratorian’s response to urgent pastoral need of the young Traveller couple to marry, I could not have put it better than this:
“We asked the archbishop if he was considering disciplining Fr. Jones, given Pope Francis’ commission to his priests to care for the most vulnerable; the understanding that the Sabbath was made for man and not the other way around; the particular situation of the Traveller community; and the widespread violations of the lockdown by government ministers, officials and now the Black Lives Matter crowds.”

What you should know, is that this said priest, is an arrogant man. Archbishop Stack should get shot of him. Trouble is … the Oratorians are quite happy he’s not their problem any more.

I dont know the circumstances of this case. But the priest should have insisted on his NO.

Keep and eye on these Church buggers, because they will be up to all sorts of tricks....says:

This may be an opportunity to review the whole business of how priests are ’employed’ and ‘paid’. By and large, whatever system a diocese uses, it will be pretty grey and obfuscated, deliberately so that the system is pretty unaccountable and indecipherable. By and large this is to the advantage of the clergy. What is mine ? What is the parish’s ? Who should pay for this ? Who should pay for that ? There are so many things that properly belong to the responsibility and economy of the priest that will get paid for by the parish, quietly and unaccountably. So, by and large, I do not have much sympathy with the clergy. These days I do not see poor or impoverished clergy. Rather, you see men who live very nicely, thank you, drive nice cars, go on nice holidays, can afford nice clothes and expensive hobbies. Much better would a nationally agreed level of salary on which all taxes are paid, and then the priest provides for everything he needs for his own life, including housing, heating, lighting etc. Just like the rest of us. Where should it be set ? Perhaps the level of a teacher ? But, with a percentage taken off, because remember these men are required to be single and don’t need to provided for a family. Seems fair to me. Clearcut and transparent.
As to the diocesan layworkers, who by and large will have been paid at a modest level, the expectation always being with Church employment that you are prepared to do the work for less than the going rate, there should be careful application of the laws governing redundancy afforded by the law so that they are not cheated or fooled out of what they are entitled. No doubt the Church will take the opportunity to turn these positions in to ‘voluntary’ roles, just like the Church of England now fills its clergy ranks with non-stipendiary or self-supporting ministers
Watch this space, and make sure, + Pat, that the Church is held to account, because we know from past experience that in spite of what they say in public they will be up to all sorts of tricks behind the scenes to absolve themselves of the responsibilities and obligations that they have towards their lay employees. We don’t trust them anymore on so many things, and I see no reason to trust them on this.

The parish Priest is only the Chairperson / President things have moved on it is the Parish finance committee that over rules the finances in a parish and after a certain level it has to go to the diocesan finance committee.
the days of the PP in control of finance is well gone some clergy cannot get a bean out of some committees.
The people who will be made redundant remember it is voluntary redundancy just now will be looked after.
This is very difficult for any Bishop to do as he knows everyone involved and their families or the PP will.
Also the Government and the Charity regulators are always checking things.

An inquiry into abuses in all Irish seminaries needs to take place.
Monies from the sale of whatever sold in Maynooth can be used to finance such an inquiry.

What’s sad about this comment is the fact that an individual can’t move on. It is not abuse to tell someone that they were unsuitable, even if it happened to be close to their ordination before they were told.
Young men come to Maynooth in all sincerity but in many cases are just not mature enough to make the commitment at that stage in their lives.
Rather than repeating comments on here which have no basis in reality such people should do something constructive with themselves and so be free to revisit their discernment later on.

You are mischievously making major assumptions. The abuse was telling people they were ‘unsuitable’, even if close to ordination. Comments here have no basis in reality…

Really?

I wonder why you make such assumptions or if you know more…?

Like

3.53 this is mischievous because one-sided beyond a point. Those impacted by a sort of underground railroad have garnered insights into behaviours that should have had more (sometimes different) students suspended than those who were.
Then the quality of oversight of a proportion of faculty in this international chain of seminaries needs enhancing. Likewise the extent of discernment among VDs.
It’s true God probably won’t have a use for new clergy but it is Rome that is still insisting that becoming one is going to be a particularly good way to be a christian.

Thank You to the first blogger for his compliments to DM

The history DM will leave is his attack on the clergy that abused victims so his safeguarding will be his good point.

Sadly as everyone knows although he had two assistants there was bad feeling so it really was a challenge for him.

However because he got heavily involved in Safeguarding it took over.

He should have tackled the far too many parishes and some where or are dependant on the second collection to survive.

At least he is up front before he retires many many other dioceses have far too many parishes but the Bishops do not have the bottle to close them more so those retiring in the next five years.

Rome has said the number of diocese is far too many as well but the Bishops seem to be ignoring this.

Sadly we do not need like to see redundancy however some parishes and dioceses have far too many lay workers.

It is a peoples Church so let them come forward and assist THIER Parishes.

Some parishes maybe not be able to reopen as they lack volunteers and okay some parishes can pay professional cleaners but the income is not there.

So DM retirement will not be happening till the Autumn now and maybe next years as he does not want to leave this situation unsolved.

And the New Archbishop may not be getting two auxiliaries however who knows how Eamon martin got an Auxiliary and he has a big lay team as well.

And long may + Pat continue being a thorn in + Nichols’ side. Keep him on his toes. The clergy probably knew that they were going to be made the scapegoats and made to sacrifice so that the Archdiocese could protect and maintain its assets. + Vinnie just didn’t want to spend out of what the Archdiocese has salted away in order to look after his clergy during this current crisis. He would happily throw the clergy to the wolves. He has little time for his clergy. All clergy should try and save something for their retirement. Hard though it may be. Some are lucky and will inherit from family, others might have reasonably well paid chaplaincy jobs and if serving long enough perhaps even a pension. Any of these things gives a priest a certain amount of independence, and that means they have options. Relying on the paternalistic beneficence of a bishop is tricky, and it’s all done on patronage and whether your face fits. Some spin this as being reliant on the father / bishop to whom you make a promise of obedience and try to spiritualise it. The reality is, that’s rather naive. As many clergy find out to their cost too late. The Lord looks after those who look after themselves. Would you trust your future to the likes of + Nichols ?

Religious community are given income from the diocese that they serve it.

Is it not obscene, that bishops, archbishops, nuncios, and cardinals, can wine and dine in fancy Roman restaurants, courtesy of finances from the laity. Meanwhile, these people oversee dioceses who covered up abuse and moved clerical abusers who ruined lives. Many probably currently cover up for criminal clerics.

These same people withhold justice, accountability and truth to survivors. Many abused people are prematurely in their graves. Many young men who entered seminaries with noble intentions also abused or had their lives ruined. It is disgusting.

The night I arrived all the staff ran out, kissed my ring and gave me my choice of any table on the house.

They would have been privileged to polish my shoes that night had I even given the slightest inclination I would like that.

Like

Was that the same time Pope Francis gave instructions to have you detained once you stepped your shoe over the line into Vatican territory. I suppose not many can claim they were effectively a prisoner of the Pope. They say Vin Nichols had a hand in it. He knew you were going to be there.

Same week.

Yes, for three hours I was a prisoner of the Papacy.

I should be proud of that.

Better than being a prisoner of the Romanist Church and her jailer priests.

Look on the bright side: you were, eventually, able to walk away, triumphant, with your dignity intact.

What have the priests of that filthy, corrupt institution? Nothing, but the tattered clothes of moral shame.

These Cinderellas won’t be going to any eschatological ball: they’ll be with their father, their REAL father. 👹

Isn’t it wonderful what is now happening to these ‘Christmen’? 😅

To these pimps for the Roman Strumpet? 😕

Nichols laughed when he heard you were detained. Philip Whitmore rang him to convey the news. Whitmore was Vin’s spy when he worked at the Congregation for Bishops. Vinny rewarded him with Rector of the VEC. Jobs for the boys, face fits etc.

Is it really true that there are only 19 sems in Ireland, spread between Maynooth and Rome? That’s shocking.

Also curious that they retained Maynooth rather than the Irish College. The Roman pontifical universities are in a different league than the teacher training college that Maynooth is.

If you had, you’d have known that A is different from B (and not A is different THAN B.)

‘different than’ is an Americanism, and acceptable. But not just in America. 😆

Perhaps the poster made that choice. After all, British English (and Irish English, etc) is now host to many such, and no one bats the proverbial eyelid anymore, except purists, like you. And you are a dying breed, aren’t you? 😉

When Mgr Cassin entered the Pontifical Irish College, Rome in 1966 he was one of a class of 19, the biggest class ever to enter the College.
Then the spirit of Vatican II happened and now the last of the Irish Colleges in Europe is no more.

Shocking?😨
19 seminarians for the whole of Ireland? 😕
Shocking?! 😞
It’s a damned disgrace that there should be even one of these useless, bone-idle, self-important, parasitical, sponging bastardos ANYWHERE in the world, never mind here.
Are people really so stupid as to continue funding such contemptibly indolent parasites, given everything now known about the systemic and entrenched corruption in the dirty, Christ-betrayin’, Roman Strumpet?
How many more of your children have to raped before you fools awaken to the monstrous lie that is Romanism?
This dirty institution continues to attract kiddie-fiddlers, and their apologists and protectors. Doesn’t this tell you all you need to know about its true character, one that priest-pimps went to extraordinary lengths to conceal for generations?
Mark me well, you fools that fund this moral cesspool: your obduracy and obtuseness will come at a terrible price, the welfare of your children and of your souls.
(Where’s a good Spanish republican from the 1930s when one is sorely needed, like? 😕)

Absolutely, yes. However I think your own intelligence and time in the upper echelons of the academic world make you forget that the majority of the world’s population have an IQ under 100 and are prime fodder for the deceit of the Roman ‘Catholic’ sect. It of course also preys on the vulnerable by offering them hope after death and the delusional comfort of visiting churches and lighting candles, etc.
For those people the message will sadly need repeating because humans have an unfortunate habit of pinning their hope on nothing – there are still flat earthers, of course, and people are inclined to be taken in by criminals posing as the good guys.

That said, I don’t think it should be made illegal, because they’ve already got the bizarre idea that they are being persecuted.
Perhaps it would be better if governments put mandatory warnings on their churches like those on cigarette packets: ‘Attending a Roman church can be dangerous to your children and wallet’.
I would also like to see governments paying better attention to what the cult is doing with money and assets, and certainly it shouldn’t be allowed charity tax breaks. Luckily the property deal in London came to light. Of course hucksters set themselves up as ‘religions’ – in some US states for example, bodies registered as religion’s don’t have to keep accounts at all, and there is an interesting parallel in the ‘church’ of Scientology. This body was set up as a church to deflect attention from its purposes of taking money off people.

but if you lack Trust in our charity organisation there is always Bishop Pat and places like the Samaritans, AA Drugs line and so many others.

But I would say we are Simply The BEST out there

However the Best think I think against witch hunts is to offer up the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for you.
