Catholic Church told to shut down gay conversion therapy groups

28th June

By Niall Christie THE NATIONAL

All major psychological organisations in the UK consider conversion therapy unethical

THE Catholic Church has been told to act swiftly to shut down groups across Scotland accused of promoting gay conversion therapy after local community, school and university priests were linked to an international anti-LGBT organisation.

Priests have come under heavy criticism for their promotion and management of branches of Courage International, a Vatican-approved anti-LGBT programme which campaigners claim has long-standing links to so-called “cure therapy”.

Since 2017, the church in Scotland has strengthened its connections to the programme, with half of Scotland’s eight dioceses and archdioceses now hosting meetings run by local priests.

Across Europe only Italy has more chapters of Courage than Scotland.

The organisation does not believe people can be born lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender and teaches them to live “chaste lives”, abstaining from sexual activity and suppressing their sexuality.

According to LGBT rights charity Stonewall, conversion therapy, “cure therapy” or reparative therapy refers to any form of treatment or counselling which aims to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

All major psychological, psychotherapeutic and counselling organisations in the UK consider conversion therapy in relation to gender identity and sexual orientation as unethical, potentially harmful and not supported by evidence.

Earlier this month the Conservative Government confirmed it would shortly be bringing forward plans to ban the practice across the UK.

While Courage claims it does not officially endorse the use of conversion therapy by its branches, its teaching and insistence LGBT people must remain chaste falls within Stonewall’s definition of these conversion techniques.

A spokesperson for Stonewall Scotland told The Ferret: “The promotion of the idea LGBT people can and should be cured or changed, is extremely dangerous, particularly for impressionable young people who may be seeking answers about themselves.

“These so-called conversion therapies have been condemned by all major UK health organisations as they try to shame a person into denying a core part of who they are.

“Same-sex attraction is natural and normal. Lesbian, gay, bi and trans people are not ill. LGBT people seeking support need to be accepted for who they are, not subjected to prejudice and these harmful practices.”

Campaigners and politicians have now said the church must act to end all links with Courage International.

Scottish Greens co-leader and equalities spokesperson, Patrick Harvie MSP, said: “I wish I could say I was shocked this cruel and dangerous practice is taking place in Scotland at all, but the fact it appears to have grown in recent years is a moral stain on Scotland’s ambition to be an inclusive and welcoming country.

“Even the Tory Government in Westminster has recognised this should be illegal. The Catholic church in Scotland must act swiftly not only to publicly condemn conversion therapy but to put an immediate stop to their members’ promotion of it.”
Courage’s branches in Scotland launched almost three years ago after a UK tour by Courage director, Father Philip Bochanski.

The Diocese of Paisley was the first area of Scotland to launch a Courage chapter in late 2017, organised by Bishop John Keenan.

Bishop Keenan has travelled across the world for conferences linked to conversion therapy techniques, including with a delegation of young people from Scotland during a July 2019 trip to Courage International’s annual conference in the United States.

The former Glasgow University chaplain gave the closing speech at the gathering last year, where he said he had “admired Courage for decades”, before acting as the keynote speaker at an online conference run by Courage during lockdown in April.

LGBT Catholic advocates have said the continued promotion of conversion therapy within the church is “cruel”, warning it causes long-term harm to the health of gay and queer people.

Francis DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, said: “We have heard from people that some leaders and local chapters have recommended it to people.

“Recommending this kind of therapy, especially when it is connected to religious ideas of repentance and prayer or is conducted under religious auspices, is psychologically and pastorally harmful.

“Catholic Church officials, at all levels of governance, should roundly denounce and forbid the practice of so-called conversion or reparative therapy for LGBT individuals.”

Following the launch in Paisley, two groups – in Glasgow and the Diocese of Motherwell – were started by local priests in 2018 as part of a Scottish expansion.

BISHOP Keenan’s successor as University of Glasgow chaplain, Father Ross Campbell (above), also set up his own Courage chapter in Scotland, before joining him on the journey to Courage’s conference in July 2019.

Father Campbell reportedly carries out his ministry off campus to avoid confrontations with LGBT campaigners. He says his work as Courage chaplain for the Archdiocese of Glasgow is done separately from his work as university chaplain.

A priest working with schools and youth groups in North Lanarkshire also continues to operate a Courage branch, launched in 2018.

Father Martin Delaney, who works at St Aloysius’ Catholic Church, Chapelhall and Sacred Heart, Salsburgh, works as chaplain for schools in Motherwell and is in charge of youth ministry for the diocese.

What is conversion therapy? – TREVOR

Conversion therapy, sometimes referred to as “reparative therapy,” is any of several dangerous and discredited practices aimed at changing an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Conversion therapists use a variety of shaming, emotionally traumatic or physically painful stimuli to make their victims associate those stimuli with their LGBTQ identities. According to studies by the UCLA Williams Institute, more than 700,000 LGBTQ people have been subjected to the horrors of conversion therapy, and an estimated 80,000 LGBTQ youth will experience this unprofessional conduct in coming years, often at the insistence of well-intentioned but misinformed parents or caretakers.

Does conversion therapy work?

No. Conversion therapy is premised on the false notion that being LGBTQ is a mental illness that should be cured, despite all major medical associations’ agreement that LGBTQ identities are a normal variant of human nature. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association determined that homosexuality was not a mental illness in 1973.
In addition to its flawed foundation, no credible scientific study has ever supported the claims of conversion therapists  to actually change a person’s sexual orientation. On the contrary, a 2007 report by an American Psychological Association task force found that “results of scientifically valid research indicate that it is unlikely that individuals will be able to reduce same-sex attractions or increase other-sex sexual attractions through [sexual orientation change efforts].” In fact, Dr. Robert Spitzer, whose research had previously been misused to support conversion therapy, has retracted his original claims, stating that data regarding conversion therapy had been misinterpreted and that there is no conclusive evidence for its effectiveness.

Is conversion therapy harmful?

Yes. The risks of conversion therapy extend far beyond its ineffectiveness, and the time and money wasted on “therapies” that don’t work. The American Psychiatric Association has clarified that “the potential risks of reparative therapy are great, including depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior, since therapist alignment with societal prejudices against homosexuality may reinforce self-hatred already experienced by the patient.” The Pan American Health Organization, a regional office of the World Health

Organization, concluded that conversion therapy, “lack[s] medical justification and represent[s] a serious threat to the health and well-being of affected people.”

Conversion therapy amplifies the shame and stigma so many LGBTQ young people already experience. Parents who send their child to conversion therapy instill feelings of family rejection and disappointment and risk seriously fracturing their relationship with their child. In a study by San Francisco State University, lesbian, gay and bisexual youth who were rejected by their families and caregivers due to their identities were nearly six times more likely to report high levels of depression and more than eight times more likely to have attempted suicide when compared to youth from accepting and affirming families and caregivers. Few practices hurt LGBTQ youth more than attempts to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. All youth deserve a climate in which they are loved and embraced.

This Courage International crowd are a group of religious nuts.

Conversion Therapy goes against all decent scientific and medical understanding.

It’s a vile abuse of a human being. It’s like something out of concentration camps.

Its thoroughly disgusting, but hardly surprising, that it is being promoted by the RCC.

It should be outlawed everywhere.

Those practising it should be prosecuted, as should promoting it.

Someone said: “Sex will be the Catholic Church’s 20th century Galileo”.

It has come to pass.

Pat. At least 3 of the Scottish Bishops are homosexual and 70% of Scottish Priests are. Sounds like the they all had a gay old time in New York. For a University Chaplain to be involved in this is shocking and homophobic.

For me the key point in that newspaper article is, “This Courage International crowd are a group of religious nuts.  Conversion Therapy goes against all decent scientific and medical understanding.”
I’d fully agree with that.  Being an ordained cleric does not entitle anyone to behave in the smug sanctimonious way of these RCC clergy, endangering the health and wellbeing of vulnerable young people.
My opinions on this go back a long way.  To give you the bare bones of it:  during the war, when I was a small child,  one of my  grown-up cousins was living with us, along with her husband and a son only a few months younger than myself.  They both had ‘a Drink Problem’, as did my own parents.  Anyhow the husband was in the Army and got posted afar.  While away he was Outed as a homosexual, so ‘did the decent thing’ (as it was seen then) and straightaway shot himself.   My cousin was pregnant with their second child.
That was in 1943 and was aged three, but I can still remember the funeral; it left a deep impression on me.  Of course the reason for his death was never mentioned but an elder sister told me of it about when I was eleven.
Yes. I’m a Bible-believing Christian but I read 1 Corinthians sensibly,  and the verses of chapter 6 in context.
If the RC clergy in Scotland had real concern for the moral welfare of their flock then their parishes would all be campaigning fiercely against cigarettes and alcohol.  And the NHS would readily cooperate, so such campaigns could be very effective.
But I can’t see the Catholic Church in Britain and Ireland ever doing that.

I think these priests and bishops who push Courage are probably dealing with their own issues of sexuality, denial, transference etc. The obvious way for most of them is to denigrate, deny, ignore a significant part of themselves. That is not healthy. I, for one, would avoid anything to do with them. Can somebody provide us with a list of Courage groups in various parishes and the names of priests who are pushing / organising this nonsense ? Then we can name and shame them. I am surprised that some secular institutions, like the University of Glasgow, do not take an interest in what some of their chaplains are up to in respect of Courage. Maybe the local LGBTQ+ group at the university should be made aware that the chaplain there is pushing a discredited and damaging ideology. I’m sure they would have something to say about it, and about him ?

9.38: I don’t expect any carriage load of Catholics to engage in this debate. We live in a society that allows freedom of expression, so if by chance a good argument is made by whomsowver, let’s have respect and tolerance. My own view: If people find some usefulness and support in any community group or organisation, then let it be so. I do not believe in forcing someone to reverse a way of sexuality which he/she believes they were born with. We call needed help and understanding with our sexuality but we should not level anyone as potentially changeable into something they know they are not! Yes, if Courage Int. offers spiritual support, that’s great but engaging in dangerous psychology and raparative therapy is unwise and possubly damaging. We must consider all medical, scientific, psychological and psychiatric data before determine any active processes of changing any.person into some entity other than who they believe themselves to be. There are stories of gay people who have reversed their gay tendencies, but I cannot validate statistics. I also believe that we need to have the strictest of moral, medical and ethical guidelines around the whole issue of sexual identity transformations!!

I said ‘cartloads’ not ‘carriage load’. Don’t be such a snob.
Respect and tolerance for groups like Courage? Have you taken leave of your senses? They preach from the Catholic bigotry that homosexuality itself (and by implication the homosexual) is intrinsically disordered. Like

People who persist in this ridiculous cult like ideology of reversing sexuality are running counter to the scientific and psychological facts, long established. The Catholic Church underpins this nonsense by a theology of sexuality that is rooted in thousands years old biblical theology which is as outdated and dangerous as the notion that the world is flat. I’m afraid they are stuck there. So, my solution is simply to ignore them and make my own mind up about all of these matters. I listen to what the Church has to say, usually delivered in some simplistic and ill prepared way by a priest who doesn’t even understand it himself, and then shrug my shoulders and discount it as a load of nonsense, and then go about my business and make my own decisions. I pick and choose. I have to because I know that if I swallowed the whole lot I would be damaging myself and others around me. I think that is what the vast majority of Catholics do nowadays – listen respectfully, make their own minds up, live their own lives. Bishops and priests telling us what is what is a thing of the past. Most clergy know this by now. There are only the simplistic idiots, like that chap in Toothing Bec, who think that regurgitating Church teaching about all sorts of things that he hasn’t a clue about himself, is the truth. So, Courage, other idiotic sects like that, pontificating priests, and past their sell by date theologies of whatever……I just don’t pay any attention at all.

By buying into Roman overreach the “Courage” organisation risks causing danger to all Christians. To St Paul Christians had dropped out of certain roles in Roman society which his contemporary Rome generally (outside the circle of certain emperors) looked down on. Psychologically “carried away with passion” meant mania. Unlike the current Rome, St Paul believed in Holy Spirit power and plain prayer to assist us in our self-management and mutual care.
People I knew who looked to the then predecessors of the “Courage” organisation (which latter took them over) found that the RCC didn’t teach the virtues: it doesn’t teach prudence or discernment either. Those individuals were critical of the reparative stuff at that time. Some wanted to call themselves “homosexuals” to attract others.
Those concerned about discernment get palmed off on esoteric and remote “Ignatians”. Dom Chautard whose writings were abolished as soon as he had written them, had no thought of orientation, clericalism or sacraments. There was only one apostolate and that is the one that each of us has.
Orientations are very complex and are the affair of us each and not authorities commercial or otherwise. All kinds of organisations have distorted them simplisticly and “Courage” by doing exactly the same is package dealing and weaponising the emotionally vulnerable. (t b c)

Like

(continu.) Bishops’ conferences should embrace their mission to teach us church members the virtues, not set up expensive “health” committees. The RCC should preach trust for Holy Spirit in you and me, not set us up to be regarded as a nuisance. The virtues are the property of individuals to exercise at discretion. Holy Scriptures don’t belong to Rome, which doesn’t believe them.
Rome is an asset management organisation and sees you & I as its subalterns to deploy in its ill thought out battles. Its dynamics now are infinitely worse than in the Triumphal 1920s, which is when the then sexuality battle as it was and is being fought, was lost. Anyone trying to “implement” RCC “teachings” runs into this kind of clash.
“Courage” are just like the other “movements”, recruiting sergeants & site foremen for the RCC leaders’ self-defeating battles. Why would an organisation that claims to attract the emotionally vulnerable place hollow forelock tugging higher than any good? It is not your duty to affiliate yourselves to Rome with its cheapskate outsourcing mentality and mission creep and be weaponised against your very selves and fellows.

@9.38, until the churches stop taking that verse in I Timothy so literally (about all Scripture being profitable), they will continue to hold the silly doctrine of biblical inerrancy and therefore the belief that homosexual acts are morally wrong.

Like

10.01 “inerrancy” does not equate to literal literalism so while I suspect I agree with your unexpressed sentiment here, the actual meaning in I Tim is in relation to forms of fruitfulness in spiritual gifts that we no longer understand in a context of eschatology we won’t understand till it happens. Chastity applies equally to all varieties and variations and is an individual responsibility to shape, not a legislation. Protestant and RC twistings are NOT “inerrant”. RC and Protestant “teaching” alike, is “don’t think you’ve got gifts because you haven’t”. Quenching the Holy Spirit or what? (Despite much fake “invoking” I know of.)

Like

10.08, I did not say that it did. (BTW, the verse is in 2 Tim.)
The verse is grammatically ambiguous; it is, therefore, capable of being understood in two ways: the first refers excusively to the Hebrew Bible; the second to the Hebrew Bible plus any scripture considered to be inspired by God.
When this letter was written, the Canon of the New Testament had not been determined. When it was, these scriptures, too, were considered by the early church to be among those referred to by the author of 2 Timothy.
My point is that dogmatic acceptance of the Doctrine of Inerrancy can lead to moral literalism and can produce profoundly ignorant statements on the nature of such human traits as homosexuality.

Some good news for once! Courage is a vile dishonest movement, and young people particularly in schools and universities should be protected from its warped nonsense. Yet again we see how the state has to intervene in order to protect young Catholics from their own pastors.

Unsurprisingly in his last few desperate months Keith O’Brien recommended Courage, though he was hardly a poster boy for them.

Just a small correction regarding Westminster, it wasn’t Quest which Elsie booted out of Warwick Street – now comically run by the Fraudinariate – but the Soho Masses. I suspect Elsie is neither hostile nor particularly interested in gay issues, but should they impede her own ambitions they are quickly shown the door.

Courage is yet another dysfunctional product of JPII and Ratzinger. Before them Quest was treated pretty respectfully, advertised in diocesan year books and welcomed to meet in parishes. I agree that we could learn from Dignity in the USA.

Courage DOES NOT promote so-called “conversion therapy”. It does not “pray away the gay”. The attack on Courage in this blog is typical of the hysteria generated by the Gay Mafia and its cohorts who turn in spite and fury – with all sorts of demands for jailings and prosecutions – for whoever doesn’t go along with their ideologies.
Buckley on the one hand excoriates and delights in exposing those who lead promiscuous homosexual lifestyles in the Church and then viciously attacks an organisation that supports people not to live such a lifestyle. Buckley will never be happy.
The organisation Courage helps those with same sex attraction to live chaste lives in keeping with God’s Law, which is binding upon everyone – no matter what their sexual orientation.
Courage seeks to support people who are same sex attracted to love and accept themselves as children of God – not the “LGBTQI” labels and false definitions of human beings to fit their ideologies.
There are many same sex attracted people who reject the “gay” dictatorship about who they “must” be. Buckley himself is on record as saying the “Gay Pride” scene isn’t for him. And remember the vicious attacks on Buckley a few years ago by the “gay” brigade?
Courage helps people to liberate themselves from the dictatorship of LGBT ideologies and not to allow themselves to be defined in their terms. It’s about freedom – true freedom – the freedom of being a child of God. Buckley’s screams of outrage and the other howls on this blog today are typical of the ignorance, hatred and intolerance of modern day LGBT fanatics.
If you want to learn about Courage read what they say about themselves – not the twisted bigotry of the haters on this blog.

According to the poster @ 12.10, ‘Courage DOES NOT promote so-called “conversion therapy”.’
It is never wise to make an obvious lie the gambit in any argument: it simply puts people on their guard for more such. And there are indeed more.
Couage does promote this style of so-called ‘therapy’, not in name of course, but in nature. Courage’s ideology is strikingly similar to that of so-called ‘conversion therapists’ in other countries, so, really, there is insignificant, if any, difference between what they and Courage practice.
And that insidious ideology teaches queer people to suppress a core and seminal part of their natural identity as human beings, which, incidentally, Courage teaches is unnatural, since one of its fundamental, but entirely unscientific, doctrines is that gay people are not born gay, but deviate from their innate heterosexuality at some psychologically traumatic point in their lives. Again, there isn’t a jot of credible science for this, but that does not deter Courage from propaganising this doctrine: this out-and-out lie.
I suppose when a poster opens his comment with a lie, he just can’t stop himself from settling into his chosen stride. And the poster @ 12.10 proves my point, because the lying does not cease. ‘Courage’, he states, ‘helps those with same-sex attraction to live chaste lives in keeping with God’s Law.’
This bald statement signals that there is absolutely nothing chaste in gay love, not one redeeming facet. Another lie.
And where does God condemn gay love. Others, like that poster, do so in God’s name. But where does God himself condemn it. Nowhere. Yet another lie.
And does Courage really seek ‘to support people who are same-sex attracted to love and accept themselves’? If this is what they are telling vulnerable people who approach them, then, oredictabky by now, they are lying. By counselling people to disown a significant part of their natural identity can only harm them further, psychically and spiritually, inculcating in them the lie that God will not accept their queerness, even though he himself has said absolutely nothing on the subject.

1:42 and 2:10 the likes of you could equally be told to mind your own beeswax.
Whether you like it or not, there is a Christian view of human sexuality that is rooted in Scripture which Christians believe to be the Word of God.
There are a number of places in the OT and NT where genital acts between persons of the same sex are condemned.
No one is forced to become a member of Courage. People are free to reject the Biblical/Christian view of human sexuality but, those who freely choose to live according to it should be allowed to do so, without sinister and pejorative motives ascribed to them.
Not all people with same sex attraction “buy” the LGBT ideologies. Deal with it.

@ 3.04, no; the Christian view of human sexuality is not rooted in Scripture, but in preferred interpretations of certain passages there; they are not the same. And those interpretations are moot.
Yes, there are passages in both the Old and New Testaments that address same-sex genital activity (but not homosexuality itself) and condemn it, just as there are scriptural passages in both testaments that condemn mixed-sex sexual activity. But if you look closer at these passages, you’ll learn that it isn’t the acts themselves that were condemned: they were condemned for the cultural or moral contexts in which they took place. Any moral deficit here is not inherent, but attributed.
If you read the the tale of Sodom and Gomorrah, you’ll discover incestuous sex between Lot, and his two daughters, in order that the women might become pregnant. The author of this tale does not condemn these sexual acts; we today would certainly do so.
The moral here? Don’t rely too much on an ancient people for a sexual ethic for the 21st century: they weren’t exactly reliable for their own time.
As for your statement that no one is forced to become a member of Courage, no, perhaps no one is physically coerced, but there are other kinds of force: for example, being emotionally blackmailed through feelings of guilt about sexuality stirred up by Courage speakers, especially if these are addressing impressionable and vulnerable teenagers in schools.
Maybe you’d like to ‘deal with’ that.

You expressed something very profound in the fourth line of your comment. It had never occurred to me before……..rooting is Australian slang for copulating: the verb, used as the interaction between human sexuality and Scripture expreeses the ethic needed to progress a way forward from the medieval context still pervading the Five Religions of The Book.

You’re a bit slow on the uptake Sean aren’t you hi but? Courage is not about “conversion therapy”. It’s about living with same sex attraction and not hopping into bed with whoever you fancy. Pity there wasn’t a similar heterosexual version for you. How many women is it now who have passed through your hands and been dumped but hi?

12.10: An excellent, balanced and informed comment. The dogmatism if old ascrejected by Pat and his chihirts us replaced by a new dogmatism – an insidious hatred if all things Catholuc and whatever doesn’t fit into “modernism”. The promotion of a ‘do what you like, have what you desire, be who you want to be’ philosophy is built on shifting sands. Our young people need role models about responsible relationships, sexuality, identity, spiritual integrity and moral values. This blog is inherently biased and bigoted against anyone who argues for these values. Pat encourages an irresponsible ethos re: sexuality in all its dimensions. Sadly.

Anything in this day and age that tells people you don’t have to live in subjection to your whims, desires, lusts and passions, is going to be viciously attacked, hated and misrepresented.
Buckley calling for Courage to be “outlawed” and those promoting it “prosecuted” typifies this aggressive and persecutory mindset. And this about an organisation about which he is obviously totally ignorant – but hey, who cares about the truth?
People need to stand up to these vicious Marxist secularist ideologues who are attempting to impose their worldview on absolutely everyone – and who seek to dominate into submission – those who dare to march to ‘the sound of a different drum’.
Ironically, they claim to “celebrate diversity”. So long as your “diversity” is of the permitted sort though. If not, watch out.

2.07, it is always prudent to look before throwing stones, in case there’s the chance of a painful richochet.
So those who oppose groups like the inaptly named ‘Courage’ for their exploitation of gay people are ‘vicious Marxist secularist ideologues who are attempting to impose their worldview on absolutely everyone’? Don’t you think that’s more than a little hypocritical to come from a religious tradition that, historically, has excelled in vicious persecution of people, and in their forced conversion to Christianity, on pain of torture and death? You can see the high irony here, can’t you?
You can too, I presume, see why no one could possibly ever take you seriously.
Your traditional methods of persuasion are too vulgar for 21st century tastes, but that hasn’t stymied your propensity for imposing YOUR worldview on others, has it? You tried the stick on human beings all those centuries ago; now it is time for the carrot: the assurance to vulnerable gay people that they are intrinsically disordered, that their love for one another is unchaste and unholy, but that you have the remedy, a programme of behaviour, practically identical to that of ‘Conversion Therapy’, that will bring them home to God. It doesn’t matter a jot to any of you that what you are cajoling gay people into are lives of loneliness and depression, of rigid and anxious introspection to ensure freedom from the influence of a romantic attraction inherent in their nature, of a lifestyle (yes, on this occasion the word, for once in relation to gay people, is appropriate) that is hard to bear, perhaps is unbearable, without the coping mechanisms of alchohol and drug abuse, of sexual dysfunction, and ultimately, of suicide.
God bless Courage.

The keyboard warriors are out in force today, your Excellency. They’re trying every worn out old trick they’ve got, including trying to make out that you promote promiscuity (never once have I heard you promote any such thing), to saying this blog is biased.
Biased to them obviously means anything that disagrees with them and next they’ll be making out their own Miss Haversham ethic is counterculture.
You couldn’t make it up!
This is nearly as good as how rattled they get when you remind them you’re a Catholic bishop!
For some reason my phone suggested ‘boyband’ for bishop, but maybe you have that career up your sleeve 😉

I would go even further than telling Courage and the Church to keep its nose out of gay people’s business. I’d tell them to keep their noses out of sex, sexuality, and relationships altogether. The Church’s teaching on these matters is premised on an outdated and redundant understanding of sex and sexuality, coming from a semitic culture of wandering tribes and the desert. It has become the lodestone of Catholic teaching and they have used it to straight jacket people for thousands of years in to a peculiarly unhealthy and dysfunctional understanding of themselves and their sexuality and the place of sex in their lives. I reject the Church’s teaching that all sex outside of marriage is necessarily wrong and sinful and not according to God’s plan. Liberation ! And when you do that, things like Courage are just worthy of distain and contempt. The fact is that the vast majority of people order their sexual and relationship lives outside the Church’s teaching. Even those who go to Church ! And, the world has not fallen apart ! Having bishops and priests and the likes of Courage banging on about sex and sexuality is just – well, something that we don’t listen to anymore. I wish these people would get how irrelevant they are to us. And, anyhow, why should we take lectures from those who have shown themselves to be so lacking in honesty, truth, integrity and justice, and who perpetuate a damaging and dysfunctional theology of the body ?

Pat, what’s the lowdown on Fr Gary Donegan CP, the Shinner chaplain who did the big Provo funeral today. Is there more than meets the eye and do you have a file on him? Psychologist, the best one, the last 25 years are sure that our being gay is caused by violence. They say it can happen while we’re in the womb and can be more likely if we see violence or hear it against our mother or father for instance. I believe this, as it is true of all my gay friends’ lives when they were tiny. I don’t believe in therapy. I think we need to abstain from same sex though. I have been happier, without the lust. I need love, not lust. I lived with an opposite sex partner for 20 years, and lust died and acceptance came. I never used Courage but they just ask us not to have same sex – this isn’t conversion therapy, it’s religious advice and decent advice for a Godless society. Partick Harvey doesn’t know what he’s on about. Courage has helped loads of religious gays. These days I feel I just don’t give a damn about sex anymore and I’m so glad – I’m free.
