MARY MC ALEESE CONDEMNS CATHOLIC CHURCH FOR “INTRINSICALLY EVIL” TEACHINGS ON HOMOSEXUALITY.

The former Irish president warned of the damaging impact the church is having on Ireland younger LGBT community.

FORMER PRESIDENT Mary McAleese has described the Catholic Church’s teachings around homosexuality as “intrinsically evil” and amounting to homophobia, suggesting it “empowers the homophobic bully”.

The Belfast-born law lecturer who served as President of Ireland for two terms between 1997 and 2011 has long been vocal about LGBT rights and the influence of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

In a podcast interview with David Watters ahead of last weekend’s Pride celebrations, McAleese reiterated her concerns for the impact the Church has had on members of that community before and after decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1993

“The Church’s teaching on homosexuality is ignorant, it is unreconstructive in the life of science, it’s sad to say. It has never been looked at in the light of the new sciences and it’s not only a pity, it’s worse than that,” she said.

“The church describes homosexual acts as intrinsically evil. I would regard the Church’s teaching as disorderly and intrinsically evil. Why is it intrinsically evil? Because it conduces to homophobia.

“Look at the language that is used – ‘the homosexuality is disordered’. Who wants to believe that their God-given nature is disordered? That homosexual acts, how they express their love in a loving relationship, for example… that that is regarded as intrinsically evil. I don’t think so.”

“And that by its nature… that language of evil and disordered trickles down into the thinking and it empowers the homophobe, it empowers the homophobic bully. It gives him or her permission to be homophobic and I think the church has got to answer that.”

McAleese was also critical of the Vatican and Pope Francis, who many see as a more progressive and open-minded Pope than his predecessors, but added some bishops and cardinals across Europe have begun a more positive conversation around the approach of the church to the LGBT community.

“Certain bishops, particularly in Germany and certain cardinals have been champions in this regard, and I think I see in them the green shoots of a future open debate, but let me go back to Francis.

“Alot of people will say ‘Oh wasn’t it wonderful when he said who am I to judge’. Well I was not at all impressed by that, I was angered by it because he does judge. He is the supreme judge of the Church. He is the legislator, he is the judge. If there is something wrong with the law, the only way it can be changed in the Church is if he changes it.

“He is the person who presides over the law that uses these awful phrases ‘intrinisically evil, intrinsically disordered’, he presides over that. He cannot have it both ways but there is a long tradition in the church of having it both ways.”

The 67-year-old also spoke about her own self-education and motivations to become a vocal supporter of LGBT rights as far back as the 1970s.

“I’ve always been human rights conscious and civil rights conscious, that’s why I did law. You know, a Catholic from Belfast, that’s our thing and so when I came to Trinity in ’75, I moved to Trinity and took up a job there as a law lecturer,” she said.

“One of the first friends I made there was David Norris and we got chatting and one of the first debates I ever attended was on LGBTI rights… David and I got together and chatted about [it], we’re talking about a time when homosexual acts were criminalised, can you imagine the impact of that on people.

“The one thing I knew was there was something seriously wrong here. In all my life, I’m happily married here for over 40 years to the man that I met when I was 17, I’ve never been attracted to another women.

“I’ve only been attracted to men, not a whole lot of men incidentally… and I remember saying to myself ‘what must it be like to be attracted to another human being and to know that you can’t go there’.”

PAT SAYS

I have never been a natural fan of Mary McAleese.

I still remember all her years as an RCC ass licker.

Has her son’s coming out made her more gay friendly?

But, actually, all she says about the RCC’s crazy teachings on homosexuality are good and accurate.

The fact that the Irish people voted so strongly for same sex marriage shows that the RCC is at odds with the modern, scientific world.

Civil law should hold the RCC nose to the grindstone  on these matters and stop the RCC putting its homophobia into practice in the social sphere.

And the great contradiction of course is the fact that the RCC is the biggest gay club in the world when it comes to its bishops and priests.

A lie festers and generates tragedy. That’s what has happened with the Vatican’s lie about homosexuality.

Pat Buckley ffs, you and McAleese make perfect bed fellows. You can’t make up your mind on which side of the bed/argument you are on! Priceless! If only you realised what she has said about you in private to people like Cahal Daly and Sean Brady. Will you ever wise up and realise what a fool she has made you and others out to be. She is a total charlatan and has become a laughing stock. You have fallen for it as most idiots do. You ate not going to win many friends over on this one.

What sex obsessed nutter writes that newsletter ? What a pile of crap. God, can you imagine what the writers are like ? Ad hominem. The Father’s house has many mansions, but then again, Pat is the only liberal I’ve met who is genuinely liberal. Usually liberals are pleasant up to the point that you disagree with them, then they get abusive, shut people down, doxx them and try to get people sacked, all the while telling themselves that they are the “nice” people.

Fact one: On discovering her own son was gay….she was not a bit pleased….gave him quite the difficult time after he had dispatched the (….. ) from a particular place in the Aras. The finer details are…………….. She was only ever interested in one thing…….
She speaks like the Primate of Ireland ( Dublin): out of both sides of her mouth.
Fact two: As President of Ireland, she wrote to Rome asking for a certain person to be made a bishop…..that person still enjoys Bradys favour …..he has a tea connection.
A Charlatan indeed…..fooled them all…right the way back to Trinity…….theres a ‘ tale’….

Dismantle the Church? It’s been tried often, but the alternative inspires horror, which is why we see Catholic Restorations again and again. Better to reform the Church, which is what Mary McA is attempting, and which would be highly beneficial to all those suffering from Catholic homophobia and misogyny. By the way, Fr Mulvihill’s cynical comments fall flat in face of the McAleese family’s loving unity as seen on the Late Late Show a few months ago.

Why, oh why, does England need five seminaries – Oscott, Allen Hall, Wonersh, Venerable, Beda, plus various other institutions for the propedeutic year etc ? How many men are rattling around in these places, at great expense ? It’s nuts. Why can’t the bishops get their acts together and rationalise the whole estate and training system, and make it effective and efficient. At the moment our seminaries are turning out not fit for purpose priests.

How can the Church teach something evil ? It’s not evil to say that marriage between a man and a woman is in the natural order and has been elevated from a contact to a means of grace by Christ and that the Christian tradition has consistently valued virginity, chastity and celibacy alongside monogamous marriage. It’s a belief system that many people reject as outmoded but it’s not evil. The majority of the worlds population is heterosexual that’s why gay people are always understood as a minority.

Like

The church has OFTEN taught evil things, such as that Jews are blind and godkillers and must be held in perpetual servitude, or that buying and selling slaves is perfectly compatible with divine and natural law. See Paul IV in 1555 and Pius IX in 1866.

Pat, you and I as priests are committed above all else to live the Love of God and Love of neighbour imperative….these two are intertwined explicitly. While all of us must call out wrongdoing and sinful criminality and corruption wherever they are found, surely a minister of the gospel of Christ must exercise mercy at all times. If we believe in the ultimacy of God’s justice at the end of our lives, then you and I should not abrogate to ourselves a merciless judgment. We can advise about the right course of action; we trust that civil law will be effective where approproate: we can exoress an opinion but we are not, by virtue of supposedly being an alter Christus through ordination, give ourselves a role of throwing those who fail
morally, spiritually or ethically to the wolves nor can we ever smash people into the ground by our assumed superior way of life. I try to treat all with respect and discern very wisely how far I go in my compassion and mercy. Sometimes you and I just have to embrace very bruised and broken people, even clerics. That acceptance is not a condoning of any crime or wrongdoing. When is mercy or compassion for Christ’s followers to stop?? We shouldn’t use the failures of anyone to humiliate them further, nor to drive a vengeful agenda.

8.24: A good post. Despite all our own individual failings, sinfulness and moral imperfections, God sees our innate goodness and our potential for good, to live to the best of our human ability. Those of us who dare to wear symbols of Christ’s ministry must do a justice to Christ. We are called sometimes to bind up and bandage wounds with heart compassion, not to open them with a sledge hammer: we are called to advise people wisely and prayerfully, even in their sinfulness, and not ignomimioysly shame them in public. We are asked to give mercy, not judgment. Name and shame is the cry of the lynch mob. Pat prefers their approach than the Jesus approach of having table fellowship with potential converts…..and when Jesus sat with rejects, the cast aside, the mocked and judged, the ridiculed, he made a difference to their lives. They walked away new people. A parable for the apparatchiks of harsh methods – the way of Jesus is our pathway and we must learn it anew. How about it Pat?

All of the faithful are called to love God and then love their neighbour, a priest has a vocation which is calling him even further towards perfection. God will judge sinners that’s a constant throughout the scriptures, who are these imaginary people harshly judging others ? If you had been the victim of a sexual assault by a priest you would want to protect others not just feel compassion for the sinner, this is the problem it seems like the compassion and ‘brokenness’ is all in one direction it’s to keep the sufferers in a passive state and letting the perpetrators get a warped view of the seriousness of their offence. Some of the cases raised on this blog are not about people being bruised or clericalism or whatever is thrown up as an excuse it’s about real injustice that needs to be challenged not dampened down
