RETIRED NUNCIO FACING SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES IN PARIS.

Hannah Brockhaus/CNA
July 23, 2020

A retired Vatican diplomat accused of sexual assault while in office is due to appear before the Paris criminal court in November.

Archbishop Luigi Ventura resigned as nuncio to France in December 2019 at the age of 75. He had served in the post 10 years.

Ventura was accused of inappropriately touching a young male staffer of Paris City Hall in January 2019.

It was confirmed to CNA on July 23 by Vincent Plumas, deputy prosecutor and press manager of the office of the public prosecutor of Paris, that Ventura “should appear before the Paris Criminal Court for acts of sexual assault on November 10.”
The Vatican revoked Ventura’s diplomatic immunity in July 2019, paving the way for a trial in French courts.

Ventura has been living in Rome since September last year, according to French news agency I. Media.

He was first accused in early 2019 of inappropriately touching a staffer at a January 17, 2019, reception for the New Year address of Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo. The accusation was then investigated by Parisian authorities for several months.

After the initial allegation was made against Ventura, he faced a second accusation of sexual misconduct against an adult male relating to his time in Canada in 2008. He has denied the allegations.

Ventura was apostolic nuncio to Canada from 2001 to 2009.

Christian Vachon, who was 32 at the time of the alleged incident, claims Ventura touched his buttocks at least twice during a banquet held at the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, near Quebec.

Ventura was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Brescia in 1969. He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1978 and was stationed in Brazil, Bolivia, and the UK. From 1984 to 1995 he was appointed to serve at the Secretariat of State in the Section for Relations with States.

After his episcopal consecration in 1995, Ventura served as nuncio to Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chile, and Canada. He was appointed apostolic nuncio to France in September 2009.

PAT SAYS

Ventura is a very foolish man.

After being caught in Canada 12 years ago you would think he would have learned to keep his hands to himself?

The problem, of course, was that he regarded himself as untouchable, with his diplomatic immunity.

If he has touched up young men twice, you’ll find he has done it 22 + times.

The good thing is that France, once “The Eldest Daughter of the Church” is no longer under the influence of the RCC and are charging him.

And Francis, has wisely removed his diplomatic immunity from him – so that the French can have him.

All the old Catholic countries are now willing to tackle crime and wrong doing by senior RCC figures.

Ventura is obviously a gay man who never came to terms with his homosexuality.

None of us have the right to impose unwanted touching on others.

Though I have little that the old goat has been touching up firm male buttocks for years, the waiter’s pursuit seems a bit OTT. It quite often happened to me – though not recently! – and I found it provided a good story, especially if the old queen was well-known rather than screaming the place down. It was a crowded reception for Heaven’s sake, and couldn’t the waiter have simply moved?

One can almost hear a wistful sigh at this point, a cherishing of memories fading as your buttocks go south.
Am I right, could you tell me?

Waiting is a job, and waiting is done for a firm, and people have got to have what job they can get, and what about respect for contractors’ employees and what about status differential.
Why shouldn’t harassment cover formal guests (for hours on end) of your employers as well as colleagues?
What about pervs that position themselves where they know a servant has been asked to serve. Isn’t that what parties are for? If he’s a priest what is he doing at parties? If he is a diplomat why is he a priest?

The catholic church on France is in reality dead on its feet in many places today. In some Diocese one priest for twenty-five parishes or more. Not sufficient vocations to replace retiring or deceased clergy. Some churches only one mass a year. Some years ago spending the summer in Paris I attended different churches. Many of the Mass felt spiritually dead, and the presentation of the Homily was appalling.

Tradition is the future. Authenticity continues to bear fruit wherever it is permitted to take root and grow. While many within the Church still seek to limit (or in some cases even suppress) the Traditional Roman Rite and its accompanying spirituality and formative influence, its growth in recent years is having immediate and measurable success throughout the world. The most recent example of this is France.

As reported by the Catholic Herald U.K. (from a La Croix article), French ordinations paint a very clear picture as to where vocations are booming, and where they are a bust. Not surprisingly the trend is consistent with what we’ve seen elsewhere. Tradition (authenticity) is literally the future of the Church.

According to the Herald, 20 percent of the 114 men ordained to the priesthood in France this year belong to traditional or classical orders or societies. One out of five.

Compare this with the diocesan parishes, firmly grounded in the Novus Ordo Mass and post-conciliarism, where approximately 60% of the country’s 96 dioceses have zero ordinations this year. Zero. In 58 French dioceses. Zero.

Not been near a Parish in 16 years. Now studying Canon Law (yes the Church really needs another) as he thinks this will make him a future Bishop. He is residing at St John Vianney’s but does not say any Masses, just takes board and lodgings paid for by us the Parishioners. By 1969, the Roman church actually didn’t have ANY doctrines, plus there was Italian “ferment” on top. No wonder Ventura couldn’t get his bearings.
We didn’t take Rome seriously but we took our underlying values seriously. Ventura was among the generation lumbered with enforcing the total opposite of these two things.
The things we were told about politics in the church in recent days aren’t sensational at all, much the same was going on from 1100 for several hundred years, it was going on in late patristic times.

The video is not specifically related to CSA in the Catholic Church. It illustrates the evil of child sexual abuse. It is highly organised crime and far more common than most people realise.
It is imperative on all concerned adults, particularly those who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ, to try to stop this appalling criminality.

What is it you actually want ? Is it both of these priests removed before Sunday and a different priest of the diocese ordered by the Bishop to take their place, to wear polyester vestments, say a cheery good morning and exclusive use of Eucharistic Prayer number two? The former Vatican nuncio in France, Archbishop Luigi Ventura, 75, will stand trial in Paris on Nov. 10 on charges of alleged “sexual aggression” against four men, Agence France-Press and other French media, including Le Monde, reported today, based on information from judicial sources.
It is the first time in the modern history of papal diplomacy that a nuncio of the Holy See will stand trial in a civil court. This was made possible when Pope Francis last year authorized the Holy See to lift the archbishop’s diplomatic immunity. This makes it possible for him to stand trial and seek to defend himself against his accusers in a civil court.

Handsome and richly furnished church serving Blackpool’s South Shore, by James O’Byrne, a leading Liverpool Catholic architect. In 1880 Fr Edward Lupton was sent from Liverpool to establish a mission serving the expanding Catholic population of Blackpool’s South Shore. Remarkably, Fr Lupton was to remain parish priest until his death in 1944. At first a small rectangular brick building doubling as a church and school was established on Lytham Road. A new brick presbytery was built in Crystal Road before the new church was opened on Sunday June 22 1890. A solemn High Mass was held, with an admission price of 2s. 6d. Sermons were delivered by Dr Vaughan, Bishop of Salford and the Rt Rev Mgr Bilsborrow (see Grange over Sands). Between 1890 and 1897 over £2,700 was spent on embellishing the building. This included Stations of the Cross in 1891 (£140), Rose Window (£200), eleven stained glass windows (£264) and the High Altar reredos (£713).The church was consecrated in June 1923. In 1899 a new infants’ schools was built at right angles to the church. In 1960 two boarding houses next to the church were purchased and adapted to form the present parish centre.Church orientated north-south but directions follow liturgical orientation. The church consists of nave and aisles, with no tower. It is built of rock-faced yellow sandstone with red sandstone dressings. Slate roofs. Continuous ridge line with no differentiation between nave and chancel. Decorated tracery to large east rose window. Large crucifix with figures of Our Lady and St John (latter vandalised) outside building against east elevation. Large 6-light west window with Decorated tracery. The main entrance is on the south side. Low boundary walls with replacement modern railings. The interior is a single volume, nave arcades with circular polished marble columns and enriched capitals. The interior is notable for the richness and completeness of its internal embellishment.

The major contribution to a vigorous post-war church building programme in Blackpool and its environs. This is a substantial brick church with a prominent west end, built in 1958-9 to the designs of Sandy and Norris. Internally it is high and impressive, with the body of the church divided into a series of shell domes supported on thick round arches, with passage aisles giving on to small side chapels along its length. As with Velarde’s late work, there is a strong Romanesque influence, which culminates in an apsed East end – though with round 1950s’ style top lights in the window niches. The Romanesque style and use of concrete construction was employed by E B Norris in his fine listed church in Rochdale of the 1920s. There is a nice openwork steel screen, and a fairly intact interior scheme with what seem to be original furnishings, glass, etc.The parish was established to cater for the Marton, Preston New Road areas, and to relieve the increasing school population of St Cuthbert’s parish. A school was built in 1934, with a church accommodated in its lower hall until the establishment of the present church. The foundation stone for this was laid in 1958 and the church opened the following year. The presbytery in Glastonbury Avenue dates from 1966. A new parish hall was built in the 1970s.
