EX CARD MC CARRICK ACCUSED OF PARTICIPATING IN BEACH HOUSE SEX RING.

Former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who is charged in a new lawsuit of sexually abusing teenagers in his New Jersey beach house decades ago.AP

By Ted Sherman | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

He is known only as “Doe 14.”

Raised in a devout Catholic family, he attended St. Francis Xavier in Newark and Essex Catholic in East Orange in the Archdiocese of Newark, participating in church and youth activities.

And by the time he was a teenager, his lawyers say he was being groomed for a role in what they called a “sex ring” involving then-Bishop Theodore McCarrick, the 90-year-old now defrocked and disgraced former cardinal who was cast out of the ministry last year over decades-old sexual abuse allegations.

In a lawsuit, they charged other priests served as “procurers” to bring victims to McCarrick at his beach house on the Jersey Shore, where he “assigned sleeping arrangements, choosing his victims from the boys, seminarians and clerics present at the beach house,” and that they were paired with adult clerics.

The lawsuit does not say if McCarrick asked the other priests to bring boys to the beach house.

In a press conference on Wednesday, attorneys for the now 53-year-old victim serving as the plaintiff in the lawsuit detailed a sordid, predatory scheme of sexual abuse involving McCarrick and other members of the clergy involving at least seven children, including Doe 14, that they said played out over dozens of years.

Jeff Anderson, who represents Doe 14, said priests and others under the control of McCarrick engaged in “open and obvious criminal sexual conduct” that was kept cloaked by the church.

“That continued for 50 years until McCarrick, having been publicly exposed, was ultimately defrocked,” declared Anderson.

In their court papers filed Tuesday night in New Jersey Superior Court in Middlesex County, the unnamed victim filed suit against the Diocese of Metuchen, where McCarrick served as bishop, the Archdiocese of Newark, where he was the archbishop, and the schools, high schools and parish schools Doe 14 had attended while growing up in New Jersey.

According to the lawsuit, much of what allegedly transpired occurred at a Sea Girt beach house that has been the focus of other complaints involving charges of abuse by McCarrick of seminarian students, who he allegedly would bring down to the Jersey Shore.

“McCarrick would creep into this kid’s bed and engage in criminal sexual behavior and whisper, ‘It’s okay,’” said Anderson.

Asked about the charges, attorney Barry Coburn, who represents McCarrick, said only, “no comment at this time.”

The Newark Archdiocese also declined comment.

“It would be inappropriate to discuss or comment on matters in litigation,” said spokeswoman Maria Margiotta. “The Archdiocese of Newark remains fully committed to transparency and to our long-standing programs to protect the faithful and will continue to work with victims, their legal representatives and law enforcement authorities in an ongoing effort to resolve allegations and bring closure to victims.”

The Doe 14 complaint charged that boys were also selected and abused not only by McCarrick, but by other priests and clergy at the beach house, who were named in the court papers.

Gerald Ruane, Michael Walters and John Laferrera, allegedly abused Doe 14, the lawsuit claimed. All three were listed last year by the Newark Archdiocese as having credible accusations of sex abuse made against them. Ruane was listed as deceased, and the others had previously removed from ministry.

Brother Andrew Thomas Hewitt, the former Essex Catholic principal, was also accused of abusing the boy from 1981 to 1983, and named as well in a list of those accused of sexual abuse. He is now dead as well.

Also accused of “unpermitted sexual contact” when the plaintiff was 11 years old was a former priest named Anthony Nardino. He had not been publicly accused before, but was said to have left the ministry as well. Church officials did not respond to questions about him.

McCarrick, once the most recognized Catholic leader in New Jersey and a major voice on national issues for the church, has already been repeatedly accused of sexual abuse in earlier court filings.

Last year, James Grein stepped forward with a lawsuit under a new law that gives people more time to sue their alleged abusers and the institutions that protected them. He charged McCarrick sexually abused him for 20 years, even after he told Pope John Paul II during a visit to the Vatican about the abuse.

In a separate lawsuit, John Bellocchio, a former Catholic schoolteacher and principal, alleged in a lawsuit that McCarrick sexually assaulted him when he was the archbishop of Newark.

Even before any of those allegations came to light, church officials in New Jersey later revealed that McCarrick had previously been accused of sexual misconduct with three adults during his time in the state. Two of those cases resulted in secret legal settlements, according to the Archdiocese of Newark.

The settlements included $80,000 paid to a former priest turned lawyer from New Jersey who said McCarrick, known as “Uncle Ted,” would invite young seminarians and priests to the house in Sea Girt, where they would be expected to share a bed with McCarrick.

All that time, McCarrick continued his ascendancy in the church hierarchy, picked by Pope John Paul II as Washington’s archbishop in late 2000. A year later, he was made a cardinal.

The cardinal’s downfall began after a former altar server went to the Archdiocese of New York after hearing that a panel was considering settlements for alleged victims, to report how he had been abused as a teenager while being measured by McCarrick for a special cassock for Christmas Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

He told them that McCarrick, then a monsignor, unzipped the teenager’s pants while measuring him for the garment and was later cornered in a bathroom.

The allegation led to McCarrick being removed from public ministry and later forced to resign from the College of Cardinals. A subsequent Vatican investigation ended with his being laicized, or dismissed from the clerical state — considered one the harshest forms of punishment that can be issued by the church.

McCarrick has never admitted to any wrongdoing.

PAT SAYS

The more we hear about McCarrick the more disturbing the story gets.

McCarrick wanted younger men, even youths who had not reached the age of consent.

He seems to have had a number of people, including priests, who supplied him with victims.

Mc Carrick was a :chicken hawk”.

And he appears to have had, in his circle, clerical and lay “feeders” who supplied him with “fresh meat”.

This is not the story if a man who was a lover of some kind, but a man looking boys and younger men who had a voracious appetite for young male flesh.

The fact that Pope Francis is still sitting on the Vatican report into McCarrick is a clear sign that the Vatican’s priority is not the victims but the church’s reputation and wealth.

MUSLIM CALL TO PRAYER IN IRISH CATHOLIC CHURCH.

Fr Stephen Farragher PP Ballyhaunis had Muslim call to prayer at Mass

What was this priest hoping to achieve by having a Muslim making a Muslim call to prayer in a rural Irish Catholic church?

It smacks to me of unthinking clerical gimmerickery?

It seems to me like clerical

Why doesn’t Fr Farragher just sell the church to the Muslims to make into a mosque?

He could be the new Iman of Ballyhaunis?

I’d say that McCarrick is not going to die anytime soon and provide an easy solution to his problem. He does not believe that he has done anything wrong. He simply does not get it. I’d say that he is bemused that for so many decades other powerful people in the Church instinctively understood what he was up to and didn’t seem to think it worth intervening. I’m bemused too ! How come so much was known for so long by so many people about his behaviour, and yet nobody intervened ? Strange. There are lots of layers of this onion that still have to be peeled off, and a lot of stink will emerge.

Like

No one intervened because there are no good priests. When will this penny drop for the stubborn?
The Catholic Church cannot produce good priests because its priesthood was never intendended by God: it was purely a human development, the result of a corrupt power struggle in the early church.
The Church was growing, and with it the temptation to control the movement and to profit from it, both materially, and in terms of human status. The means by which this was delivered was the creation of an elite, ministerial priesthood.
We’ve been living with the fallout ever since.
Every crisis in the history of the Church has had priesthood at its heart.

In an editorial, it writes:

“Because here’s the thing: There are numerous signs that once the pandemic is behind us, many Catholics either will not return to Mass or will stop practicing the Faith altogether. Perhaps they will have grown used to watching Mass on TV, or perhaps they will simply slip away due to inertia. But there will be some Catholics who will stop practicing the Faith because it’s a convenient time to make a difficult choice they’ve been pondering for a while — possibly because of abuse. The release of the McCarrick report now could help restore the faith of Catholics in the institution of the Church and help keep them within the fold. Until then, we continue to wait.”

On the subject of Fr Stephen Farragher concelebrating with the iman in Ballyhaunis, the Muslim call to prayer, or Adhan, is the categorical proclamation of Islam’s supercessionism over its forebears—Judaism and Christianity. It conclusively and unambiguously asserts that God’s revelation to Muhammad has supplanted and superseded God’s prior revelations to Moses in the Old Testament and to Jesus in the New Testament. It is a triumphalist declaration of Islamic supremacy over Jews and Christians.

“Allah is the greatest. I bear witness that there is no god except Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Come to prayer. Come to salvation.” These affirmations are repeated twice. Islamic sects use slightly varied formulations of the Adhan, but the core is fixed. The Adhan was made part of the Sharia during the first year after Muhammad’s migration to Medina

Muslims do not consider Allah to be the God of the Jews or Christians. Allah is not Yahweh, revealed in the Torah. Allah is emphatically not the “God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” so designated in the epistles of St Paul. On the contrary, to say Allah has a Son or that God is Triune is blasphemy in the highest (shirk), condemning Christians to hell. In 2014, Malaysia’s Supreme Court ruled that Christians could not use “Allah” for God, even though Christians used it for centuries in Malay and Arabic to refer to their God.

Former Swedish Imam Tomas Samuel explains how the Adhan is a statement of Islamic supremacy. In Islamic sources, “we discover that the prayer call states that everyone should submit to Islam, and proclaims power over the area of the prayer”. The Adhan is prayed for two reasons: “it will remind people of when it is time to pray, and the prayer call will proclaim Islam over a city,” he says.

Samuel quotes Omdat Al-Ahkam, a fundamental text for Islamic law: “Adhan is a very important ritual in the religious practice of Islam, one can liken it to the Muslim flag. Its proclamation shows that the people of the city are Muslims.” In Arabic, “adhan” means “information” or “enlightenment”—signifying that people previously in darkness and ignorance are now “informed” and “enlightened” about the true religion of Islam, to which they must submit. Islam means submission (from the Arabic root “al-Silm”—submission or surrender).

Consequently, when an Imam recited the Adhan in the consecrated space of Ballyhaunis church, he was claiming it as Islamic territory. He was professing the abrogation of Christianity and calling upon Fr Farragher and the congregation to declare their faith in Allah and his prophet Muhammad (the Adhan contains the Shahada—the Islamic creed. To convert to Islam the creed has to be recited three times).

The Shahada (and the Adhan) reinforces the claim that Muhammad is the “Seal of the Prophets” (Surah 33:40) and contradicts the New Testament claim—that although “at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:1-2).

Islam holds to a theology of territory. Central to its mission is the sacralisation of new territory.

First generation Muslim migrants made sacred the private spaces of their homes. Second generation Muslims are seeking to sacralise public space—including, and especially, the sacred spaces of its chief rival, Christianity. Instead of evangelising Muslims, the Church is actively encouraging the Islamisation of its sacred spaces.

Hosting Islamic prayer, Koranic readings and Ramadan Iftar meals is no longer the exception but more and more frequently observed in the Church. Chaplaincies in British universities are rapidly taking down crosses, Bible verses and Christian symbols from prayer rooms, which results in Muslims turning them into university mosques.

Like

No it sounds as if he has a degree in mohammedism. If what he says is correct, there needs to be a rapid change in Christian chapelancies such as The Exaltation of The Holy Cross and the removal of all islamic items. They are supposed be Christian, you can be assured the mohammedans would not allow anything Christian in their chapelancies.

Stephen Farragher clearly was not aware of the full doctrinal import of the Adhan. It is pointless, and unjust, to blame him alone, or even primarily, for what occurred.

His offer to Muslims for joint prayer was an act of charity for healthcare workers and of friendship and fellowship towards Muslims in the area; in this respect, it was in keeping with the instruction in Ch Two, para 16, of Lumen Gentium, which requires relations with Muslims to be premised on charity.

Unfortunately, Stephen’s offer of friendship and fellowship appears to have been abused by the Muslims who chanted the Adhan during the joint prayer service.

2.31, yes, he should apologise for causing offence IF that is what was intended by the imam. So if push came to shove, Muslims, too, could claim that such joint prayer offended THEIR religious sensibilities.
It is very sad that people of goodwill cannot appreciate what prompted this prayer service. Neither religious creed was overcome by it, but human beings representative of different religions and cultures were brought a little closer, until people intent on divsion, like Church Militant, determined to drive a wedge between them.

Mid West Radio based in Mayo was broadcasting daily mass at 10am during the height of the pandemic when churches were closed. Fr Farragher thought it would be an appropriate gesture to invite the Imam of the Mosque in the town to pray in solidarity. I don’t think he realised it was going to be a full on Islamic takeover.
Imagine inviting someone into your house and they proceed to insult your father, in his presence. What appears worse if that despite the overwhelming calls for a statement from Tuam Archdiocese, no such statement ever materialised. is Archbishop not computer literate, is he not opening his post, and is he ignoring phone calls? or is he just one of them bishops who consider themselves absolute monarchs who answer to no-one, especially us peasant lay faithful.

Like

3.33, I do not believe that the imam intentionally caused offence when he chanted the Adhan, or parts of it. Remember that this is the traditional way of summoning Muslims to prayer; it is not a declaration of religious war: of Jihad.

Presumably, the Adhan is chanted at the local mosque; is this, too, meant to be offensive to the predominantly Catholic Christian population of the area? Of the country? Have any local Catholics complained to the mosque about this?

If chanting the Adhan has not caused offence before, why is it causing offence now? Because the chanting took place near a tabernacle? But didn’t you know that God is everywhere, not just in the tabernacle? So going by this logic, Muslims in Ireland should not be allowed to chant the Adhan ANYWHERE in the country. Is this what you are after? Extreme religious intolerance?

If ever there was a moment for dialogue between Christians and Muslims in Ireland, this is it. Good, HONEST dialogue, expressing all hurt and concerns. But conducted, as Lumen Gentium says, in ‘charity’, not in the blind rage that is enveloping Christians in Ireland like a wildfire.

Put it out!

Indeed. While we are all human and all sinners, we are not, according to Pope Francis,
all criminals. In that context, does Jesus Christ desire those in leadership positions in the Church to harm members of His flock ; I’m thinking specifically of those abused by priests then protected by Bishops. That, was not, I suggest, simply due to their imperfect, difficult
or frail humanity. It was another, more serious example, of the clerical fraternity protecting their own.

It is not news. It is a documentary. How come you feel the need to be so dismissive. Being so dismissive of such a serious criminal issue involving sexual violation and trafficking of children is concerning. I do hope you are not a priest or seminarian.

Blissful ignorance is not congruent with being a realistic citizen particularly when child sexual abuse and child trafficking is so prevalent in society.

Were not Jesus and His followers considered heretics? They had an awful time, the Pharisees and Scribes simply would not listen or pay attention; they were too set in their ways and were more than happy to maintain the status quo.
Same old story, time and time again!
If we had the means would you ever consider extending the Oratory Society?
Think of all the happiness and Gospel love we could spread. Who could stop us?
May I leave this idea on your desk for future consideration, Your Grace?

Did Pope JP II investigate James Grein’s allegation that McCarrick had been abusing him? Grein further alleges that McCarrick continued to abuse him even after the pope was informed of it. Which suggests that Pope JP II, Christ’s supreme pastor, ignored the desperate plight of one of his sheep.
How can anyone reasonably believe that this church was founded by Christ?

It seems not a question of who knew about McCarrick’s corruption but rather who didn’t know. He was paying off people to shut them up.

he didn’t ever as much as apologise or try to explain this unfortunate incident. no doubt said he would upset the Islamic community. its ok to upset the christian faithful but heaven forbid we should criticise the muslims. He’s a weak leader. he cannot call a spade a spade and therefore has no integrity.

I’m not sure there is much mileage to be got out of McCarrick until or rather if he comes to trial. There were undoubtedly a lot more of his type – the unsavoury Cardinal John Wright among many others. I remember back in the nineties when Waterstones had quite a large gay section in their stores – mostly of questionable literary merit – coming across a collection of accounts by American rent boys detailing their liaisons with the clerical lavender mafia. In my innocence I dismissed this “smut” then as pure fantasy, even though it claimed to be factual, which now I am sure it was.

OMG! Was Mcarrick interfering with little ones as well as vulnerable trainees?!
If this is the case, and I hope it’s not, where the frig where the parents? That’s a serious and worrying question which needs to be rationally taken onboard, and I hope the authorities take this into account.
R kids, my cousins and that, are teenagers now and one of them in his 20s and lives with his girlfriend. They don’t even go round to their friends without, and of their own accord, checking in with either my auntie or calling one of us to say they are getting a train or bus or what (even if it is sometimes just to ask for money from us lol) but seriously though, this element cannot be ignored.
I find it very hard to believe everybody had no incling of anything suspicious going on, bollocks! (Pardon my language).
Were there not registered local authority social workers around back then? And if so, what part did they play…?
Were there not dedicated Police departments set up to protect vulnerable people? And if so, what part did they play…?
So, because that one had power and influences over people in the local municipality and courts or whatever, they though they were untouchable, ey?
Thank God things are changing…
By actively, and persistently, smashing down these walls of silence we are sending out a stark message that YOU WILL be dealt with in the correct fashion. And brought before the Courts.
No stone, in my own case, was left unturned; and I hope to see more ‘Smashing down’ of walls of silence, and I am happy to be just a cog: counselling/ ministry, helping, accompanying people in their healing.
I now know that making a loud noise, even if surpressed, can make the difference between life and death.

The last person at an institution who attempted to ‘correct’ one of my essays put a line through the word ‘cure’ and underlined it with the word ‘care.’
The original sentence read: “The parish priest is charged with the cure of the souls of his parish…”
Out of politeness, and from thereon, I began to add additional footnotes to my essays which ordinarily would be quite unnecessary.
He had no nationally recognised qualifications, and is, in my own personal opinion, a cherished child of God suffering from narcissistic personality disorder and extreme psychopathy accompanied with extremely uncontrollable anger issues.
He deserves the human dignity and respect that all human beings deserve,
I do hope he can now get the due care and attention which his conditions require;
care and attention which I believe was withheld from him by his ordinary and others for possibly many years.
Please Lord, I pray he finds his way and I genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, hope he experiences the love and light of the Gospel. I hope grows to understand what is it to be loved unconditionally, and to love unconditionally.
I know some may say I am foolish for being so forgiving, but I am head over heels in love with the Lord and cannot contain this love. It is Christ’s love which makes me tic, I can’t function without giving it my best, and I do fail, I am human.
Maybe it has something to do with my Attention Deficit, or just the way my family brought me up, I don’t know.
One thing I am certain of is that I am a friggin’ fool for love.
… But love and safeguarding are two separate entities, and love means keeping others safe from harm x

I agree: disgraceful arrogance on the part of the Bishop. Communion on the tongue if administered carefully and reverently is no more risky than communion in the hand – less so as the communicant is avoiding contact with their own hands which have been in contact with other surfaces. This is yet another aspect of bossiness and control over people’s lives. I have done my best to support bookshops rather than use say Amazon, but the other day I was told I had to carry a plastic grocery basket around the shop. Sod that: online from now on.

No, they humiliated themselves and showed a lack of concern and charity towards the rest of the community by risking the spread of coronavirus. Receiving communion on the tongue is not a health risk in these times and so there is a protocol in place in all dioceses that communion must be received on the hand. That child’s father knew this, but like all traddie bastardos , he wanted to cause a scene and then make a propaganda point about it.
The good bishop should have grabbed the paten and whacked him on the head with it. HARD. 😀

4.14: The guidelines and protocols are very clear. Communion on hand only for the health and safety of everyone. It makes complete sense. We cannot make exceptions. It looks awful but this man (and his daughter) chose to do the opposite to the right approach. However it may appear, we CANNOT make exceptions. The bishop is correct. Simple as.

4.14: All churches have guidelines in accordance with health authorities respective to each country. If the bishop overlooked this you’d be the first to lacerate him. Get a grip. The man was wring to persist in expecting the bishop to make exceptions. It’s most unfair to expect any celebrant to give communion on the tongue to any person. It’s wrong in the health situation we face.

I am sorry for my lack of explanation, you are very right: only God and Christ can do as you say.
The Cure of the Souls does not mean to cure anybody; the term ‘Cure of the ouls’ is understood in pastoral terms to mean the charge, or responsibility, of both the spiritual and corporal needs (mind and physical wellbeing) of those entrusted to the minister by God: young and elderly, those suffering, and those who have been abused.
Interestingly enough, the term is mostly used in the Anglican Communion and other denominations within our Christian family.
The rc seldom use this term anymore: which some people may not find to be that big of a surprise.
A caretaker of a museum is known as a Curator, because he or she, cares for the precious vessels which have been entrusted to them.
——————
Any Curator must handle the precious vessels entrusted to him or her; caring for and loving them as to ensure they are not damaged in anyway, even worse, broken.
Every vessel is unique, and each vessel shares in a common purpose.
That purpose is to reveal the beauty of God in His creation; to encourage and enable them to understand that they are loved for who they are — just for being who they are. … And wait for it: which vessels are the most precious within a museum? If you ask the Curator, he or she is likely to reply…
… “The ones with the fine lines, dents and chips. Faded lines and signs of little repairs, here and there. They are the most precious of the vessels which I have been blessed to care for.” x

Sometimes people define ‘offensive’ as ‘things I don’t like, or agree with’. It’s a non-subtle attempt to curb freedom of expression for someone’s convenience.

So yes, social media is right to be cautious (not slow) in arbitrating on content flagged by someone simply because he did not like what was being said about him, or the group to which he belonged.

Roman Catholic priests on this blog are a case in point.😕
