WHO AND WHAT IS PAUL TIGHE?

I have never met Paul Tighe. Nor do I crave meeting with him 🙂

My opinions about him come from watching him on the media talking – like the short piece above.

He appears to me to be an upper middle class Dublin Catholic.

I suspect that he is ambitious.

I get the feeling that he wants to climb the Vatican greasy pole.

For that to happen I suspect that he does not want to replace Diarmuid Martin in Dublin.

Why would the likes of Tighe want to swap his prestigious desk job in Rome to inherit all the problems DM is leaving behind in Dublin – a disillusioned clergy, disappearing vocations, dwindling congregations, an increasingly secular Ireland and God knows how much debt and other troubles.

It’s much nicer to have a plush and posh life in Rome being a Vatican mouthpiece, living in a comfortable city apartment, wining and dining in the best hosteleries, being an international guest speaker travelling business class and being an expert in how the RCC can use modern tech to promote its propaganda.

One might have high hopes of being an archbishop and cardinal?

Why do people like Paul Tighe wabt to be priests?

They are not pastors.

Tighe reminds me of the quip I once heard a retreat master give:

“He went out to do good – and he did well”. 😄

A COMMENT ON YESTERDAY’S BLOG

Diarmuid has no time for priests. He is a pure careerist whose ambitions lay elsewhere,. Dublin was never something he wanted – he said so so many times. He feigns warmth while with someone but behind the smile is a cold calculating heart interested only in himself. He’s leaving Dublin in a mess. He has surrounded himself with spineless men incapable of speaking up to him – the sooner he goes the better.

Tighe in Rome is too much in the mould of his patron he should stay there. He is devoid of personality and has no pastoral qualities. He would be the kiss of death for Dublin.

The hands are so distracting. I couldn’t listen to what he was saying.
I looked up the Wikipedia page about him. Remarkably, despite being ordained a diocesan priest 37 years ago he has never served in a parish. What is it with these desk priests? Why didn’t they just become civil servants?

I couldn’t watch even three minutes of this short, self-eulogising, self-promotional video by a physically bloated, and pot-bellied, Paul Tighe. Lack of physical temperance in a priest is a reliable sign of spiritual abd moral dysfunction of one kind or another.

What exposed Tighe’s charater (and similtaneously let him down), were the continuous, almost distracting but emphatic hand gestures. These are expressive of a dogmatic personality: one that believes he is the steward of truth, and that any dissenting voice (if it is even allowed self-expression) is one to be corrected.

This is a man who broke no clericalist moulds. Consequently, he would make a superb cardinal, since his God is the institutional Roman Catholic Church, ‘corrupt, and riddled with corruption’.

Like

Pat,
You are getting closer to the truth.
Tighe even dresses like Dermott. He said he lives alone in the video but he failed to mention that he has a frequent lodger in the form of an Irish Archbishop. He must sleep on the couch because it is small apartment. Cigars and brandy at the ready in the poorly decorated ‘palace’.

The problem is, most of them are unwell in the head. Some are sent to the likes of say, I don’t know, the St Luke’s Centre in Manchester for ‘assassment’ then released back into ministry.
However, the problem here, you see, is that the people who do the assessments are sometimes R clergy who hold the BACP accreditation.
You could describe this as an intermingling of the filth with the establishment.
Now that is a little too close for comfort in my book.
Certainly when they are under the illusion they can do as they please without reprisal from Authority.

Bishop Tighe can turn on the charm, his south Dublin rather refined clipped accent borders on a british plummy one. He is Mister nice guy to the journalists who scavenge the vatican precincts. He is a creation of Dermo his big pal and patron. He groomed him for episcopal office by creating a bogus high profile job for him in Dublin with the grandiose title of ‘Director of public affairs’. This post was invented for him and died on his appointment to Rome. To give him some Roman street cred he was also named a Monsignor in a blast of purple haze that created a plethora of such domestic prelates. A smokescreen of course, to hide the only one that he really wanted, the said PT. It worked. Priests were so shocked at some of those nominated that PT, who had done nothing to distinguish himself in any aspect of his life slipped in under the radar, and could arrive in Rome in suitable purple attire, already on rung two of the ladder. A truly Machiavellian masterstroke, but then it is Dermo we’re talking about!
Tighe is by nature an introvert and the role of diocesan bishop is not one that would fit with him in any way. Having said that he could still end up in Drumcondra as monarch of all he surveys. Nothing would surprise when it comes to the church. It would be a disaster for the diocese – more of the same, a man with frustrated ambitions in a role he despises, a recipe for inertia. Given that he is a creation of Dermo he could end up as a glove puppet for him and Dublin continue on the slippery slope to nowhere.
Let’s hope they leave PT in Rome where he seems happy to swan about the corridors of power – probably in the hope that he can deliver one day, by proxy, the red hat that has eluded his lord and master.

Pat, what struck me watching the Today Tonight programme is, how remarkable to think, while you were having your differences with Daly, these tin-pot bishops throughout the entire country, were protecting clerical child abusers. I can recall meeting Sean Fortune in the early 1980s, and given an invite to his den of iniquity on the Wicklow coast. Apparently, alarm bells were loudly ringing about him, for you know what, while he was a seminarian.
Yet, he was ordained, and left to his own devices for years. What an awful shame Daly didn’t have what it took to mend fences with you, like a grown up Christian man. He must have felt very threatened by you, making an example of you to others who might threaten him or rock his boat. How long is a priest on probation in a diocese?

If Daly had treated you as an opportunity at any point… Well, who knows how it would have ended. I feel sure that if you had perceived the bishop differently you would have been ready to hear any perception he had that you were being difficult.
However all is sacrificed to the pursuit of mediocrity – the effect of this is visible in the bishops!
Many of the saints must have been complete nightmares – Philip Neri springs to mind – but nowadays would be firmly silenced.

The problem Daly and I had was primarily that he was a dictator bishop and I was trying to practice Vatican 11 pastoral practice.

Daly did not do dialogue. I begged him time and time again to dialogue with me.

He did the Ignatius of Antioch “the voice of the bishop is the voice of God”.

Anyway, I’m sure Gods plan is somewhere in it all.

Pat, I enjoyed the RTE video about you very much, thanks for posting it. Here are my observations.

1. It shows how Ireland was still so Catholic (or maybe it reflects contemporary RTE news values) that your dispute with Cahal got top billing, pushing the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement into second place.

2. I hadn’t realised that the Divis Flats were right beside the cathedral. It was great to see you talking to the young ones. I imagine the current generation don’t talk to priests.

3. I was very struck by the poor housing, lack of jobs and discrimination. Imagine going down into the city centre jobcentre and saying you were from the Falls.

4. You came across as very brave, whether it was confronting the INLA, armed robbers, unionist bigots or Cahal.

5. I thought that the DUP in Kilkeel was fair and reflective.

6. I couldn’t understand why there was no Church response. Surely RTE gave the heirarchy’s press office a right to reply but they didn’t take it up.

7. Were you incardinated in D&C? If so, did you not try to challenge Cahal through the canon law system or is it, as I’ve heard, that curates have virtually no rights in canon law?

8. Visiting the Protestant churches was a brave act in those towns at that time, though I’m ensure that it enraged some people.

9. Did Cahal expect you to live on the street with no income? Did the PP of Larne not defend you?

You demonstrated what the vast majority of RC priests lacked (and still lack): a moral spine. And you had the wisdom (you were not without it, even at the time, despite what you think) to accept the likely consequences of raising your head above a sea of compliant, and episcopally complaisant, priests.

The only cultic cohesion in the RCC is, and always was, subjugation of the laity through fear of damnation. It is far less effective these days, but its impact on Mass-attending, elderly parishoners, despite the ever-burgeoning moral filth in the Church, is as obvious as it is pitiful.

Some priest-posters on this blog have flattered themselves by proudly stating that the loyalty of these parishoners is publc testament to the moral quality of the priests they serve.

Self-deception is the most insidious of the lot.

Thank you for your replies, Pat. I was in Maynooth a few years later and I remember the middle dean, Fr Ahern, telling a student who had slept in that if he didn’t pull his socks up, he’d turn into another Pat Buckley.

I think old Cahal was terrified and also enraged because he and people like him had never been contradicted to their face – priests and people just complained to one another or just walked away.

It’s the ruthlessness of the Church and its bishops that shocks me. They must become very hard and cynical, as old policemen and judges tend to become. The same men that were coming out with warm words about “God is love”, doing worthy broadcasts at Christmas and telling everybody else how to live, were at the same time moving abuser priests about, getting abused children to sign oaths of secrecy, hiding IRA men in monasteries and saying Mass while in all sorts of relationships – going from bed linen to altar linen, as Sr Vincent, the Infirmarian of Maynooth used to say.

It seems awful to ask, but do you think he put you in loyalist towns because he thought you’d be at risk there, or did he just want you to go to places where there were fewer Catholics to corrupt, as he would have seen it.

I agree that the Church betrayed the dying; if it could betray children, it is small beer to betray the dying.
But not in the way the way either Mary Sykes (the author of the article) or Damian Thompson (Who else?) thinks. The Church has betrayed the dying by having drummed into them that a priest is necessary for personal reception of God’s grace, especially the grace to prepare one for eternal life.
If dying Covid-19 patients were anxious about their fortunes post-mortem, it was only because a long, tedious, and mind-bending succession of priests, fearmongers, had made them dependent, not on Christ, but on priests themselves for salvation. It is indoctrination, form of idolatry, by parasitical rogues, but one too late to challenge for most people at the point of death
